I was really hoping to give a better review but just couldn't this time. The consistency and food quality has NOT been good lately. It's hit or miss and Im embarrassed because I recommended this place for dinner last night and it was beyond disappointing for us. The catfish was so salty, omg! I love salt now, so if I'm complaining about something being too salty, then it's likely to raise your blood pressure because of the salt content. I don't know if they accidentally poured too much salt/seasoning in the batter but I just couldn't eat it. Despite my better judgement, I tried the fried okra again. It wasn't fresh, the insides were brown. Yuck. Immediately threw it out. The cornbread is always good but these portions have decreased. They used to give much larger sections and now it's child-size portions. This sucks because I love supporting good quality restaurants and this one isn't consistent enough for me. I really wanted to support a Black-owned business, so I decided to try Mr. B's. Unfortunately, my experience was very mixed. The fish cake was actually good -- flavorful and cooked well. The French fries and fried okra were also good and crispy. However, the burger was terrible. I asked for it well done, but it came out soggy and tasted like it had been cooked in a microwave. There was no seasoning, and the texture was very off-putting. It honestly didn't taste freshly made. The peach cobbler was the worse out everything, It tasted like syrup and dough, no peaches in it. I don't like writing negative reviews, especially when I genuinely want to support local Black businesses, but the burger was too disappointing not to mention. I hope they improve the quality and preparation because some of the other items were solid. read more

I'm so glad I remembered this place! A family friend told me about this place almost 15 years ago and it crossed my mind to go take my little sister with me on this lovely Saturday right before we went last-minute Mother's Day shopping for my mom. We ordered the Baked Chicken with gravy, mac and cheese, candied yams and a side of cabbage. Also, I got a yummy slice of sweet potato pie! It was a little busy but the wait was about 3-5 min before Mr.B himself came from the back and took our order. We dined on the patio! He was very kind and patient and even offered a discount since I paid with cash. All of the food was a 10/10 besides the cabbage. It lacked flavor so I gave it to my mom who also didn't enjoy (sorry mom) -- I think I lost points for Mother's Day. Just kidding. But, yes overall.. I will be back. Side note: One of the cooks caught me leaving from outside and I told him I should've gotten string beans instead, I asked if it was too late to grab some but I was in a hurry and he couldn't take my order from behind the store, I was getting in my car. Wonderful place for some homemade soul food. The menu is varied and so many delicious options. The place offers to go service where you can order ahead or order inside. The staff is amazing and friendly and so knowledgeable about the menu. They will inform you of all of the food options and make suggestions if you're unsure. The food is freshly prepared. Everything I preferred was piping hot and smelled amazing. The staff made sure that we got everything and our orders were correct. I recommend the carrot soufflé. The fish was seasoned and fried well; the collards were tasty and are seasoned with pork, the good thing is they let you know up front for the non-pork eaters; the mac and cheese...I was highly disappointed. It was way too soupy and the flavor was rather bland; lastly dessert, I grabbed a sweet potato tart vs a slice. It's not my mama's but it was good and no strings from the potatoes... whew! The service was good, they greet you as you enter which is a nice touch. The staff was friendly and made sure to mention the lunch specials for the day. I'm guessing at one time you could eat in but it's basically takeout but they do offer outdoor seating. They have a dessert casing and a long leather seater while you wait for your order. Good morning everyone, I usually order from Mr. B's and have never had an issue the food is always really good. Yesterday I ordered the baked chicken meal with yams, collard greens, and added some black-eyed peas. When I started eating the baked chicken last night, I realized after taking a bite that it wasn't fully cooked. While it didn't have any blood in it, I still had to put it in the air fryer to finish cooking it myself. Because it had gravy on it, I didn't notice at first when I opened it. I've heard lots of good things about this place and couldn't wait to give them a try. I absolutely love the area where they're located as there are lots of options. My friend and I met here for lunch and grabbed a table on the sidewalk. I ordered the crab cake sandwich, mashed potatoes and gravy, and a slice of sweet potato pie. My only complaint is that the crab cake was deep fried extremely hard which is not necessary for a sandwich and completely destroys the concept of a delicate crab cake......there are other ways to prepare it for a sandwich......broil, saute, bake........anything other than deep frying. The taste of the crabcake was good when I took it off the bread to break it open but it was hard as a brick........so unfortunate. But the space is clean and very organized. Our first order was the fried oyster with mashed potatoes and mac & cheese. Fried oyster was crispy and was given an ample amount. Mashed potatoes tasted like real potatoes with a very savory gravy sauce. Mac and cheese were delicious. Our second order was the fried catfish plate with green beans and mashed potatoes. When I lived in Richmond, I used to come down to Mr. B's in Chester once every two months with my wife and grandmother. Now that I live right down the street, I have to try and limit myself to stopping by about once a week (even though I went three days in a row last week). Everyone at Mr. B's is amazing. They have handled COVID extremely well, upping their takeout game to great success. The food is so comforting. Fried chicken, chopped steak, smothered pork chop, meatloaf are my faves.
