I can't believe that in all the years I've been eating here I have never bothered to review it. It's located about 1/4 mile from my job and 2.5 miles from my house. Maybe because I am always taking carry out. I've enjoyed the 25 shrimp plate 1/2 grill 1/2 fried. Absolutely delicious. Jumbo shrimp and fried fish. Enough to feed two people. This dish is my favorite. And the Philly chicken sandwich. Not my favorite. I didn't like it at all. I was already sharing half- but could only eat a portion of the half that was mine. I used to go to the Sams in Laplace where I lived. They were the best there and they're pretty good here. They are in line with how they are in south Louisiana, which is more than I could say for most anyone else that has brought an eatery up here like that I would send anybody to Sam's because they have good food and the prices are reasonable, and the food is top notch. Was visiting the casino and decided to get away from the tourist and this was a place that a friend suggested. Apparently we went to a different location than she normally visits, however the food here was on point. We went on a Saturday evening and there were lots of folks ordering to go so there were plenty of seating options. I ordered the "Special" - fully dressed catfish poboy that came with fries, a dipping sauce (same sauce that's on the sandwich) and a drink for $7.99 ($8.25 after taxes). The food came out hot, the fries were cooked to perfection - my only regret was not asking if onions come on it (they do) however I didn't have to pick too many of them off. The bread was soft like I like it, the catfish was crunchy and even with the onions, I have no regrets. Another person who was with me ordered the shrimp poboy - it looked just as delicious, I'm just too lazy to pull the tails off when I'm ready to dig in on something. This is a franchise from a southern chain that we had not tried before and is relatively new to Mobile. The menu has general fare like burgers, chicken, fried shrimp, and fish plates. The portion sizes were pretty big! But they also have poboys with oysters, shrimp, fish, etc. The red beans and rice were good, very similar to Popeyes. There are a nice variety of sides including Okra, Coleslaw, Red Beans & Rice, Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans, Fries or Mac & Cheese. The main dish entrees were fine (I ordered fried oysters and my husband got the fish strips and chicken strips). The main complaint was that the side dishes, hush puppies and tartar sauces were soooo spicy. My husband has to take Prilosec twice a day to control acid reflux which is aggravated by highly spiced foods. I just don't care for highly spiced food. Why does every dish need to burn your mouth off? I can add spice if I want it but as it is, I had to throw away the corn, the green beans, the hush puppies and the sauces. Back again. Great location to my job, to pop in for lunch. We order ahead and when we arrive it is ready and piping hot. If you order at the counter it will take a while. Which is good. All of the fried food selections are very fresh. The caterer they use for their desserts are amazing. Someone can really bake. I have tried very many of their flavors and have been disappointed with none. The fried catfish is perfect. I have not found my favorite side dish just yet. Still trying them all. The only reason this got a 4 rating instead of 5 (which I rarely give) is that the wait time was over 20 minutes. This is a very busy place at dinner-time and I can see why. Amazing that what appears to be a fast food type restaurant is actually superior quality seafood. Large portions and reasonably priced food. As a Louisianian, I am really critical of seafood since everybody cooks seafood here. This place is worth the stop. It's 40 minutes from me and I'll be back next time to make this my destination. I went in to grab a to go order at 8:45, and the woman at the counter told me, "We close in three minutes." 8:48 seems oddly specific for a closing time, so this was probably just a passive-aggressive way of denying service. Instead of just telling me she didn't feel like working any more, she let me place an order. She then rolled her eyes and said, "Let me check to see if the grill's even still on." At that point, I said "never mind" and left. Her reply? "Thank you." If your closing time is at 9 p.m., close at 9. If you want to close at 8:45, that's fine! This place just opened in Manassas. Visiting my son, so we decided to give it a try. It is nothing fancy, a basic hole in the wall type. The menu is basic southern style food. My wife decided on Gumbo and my son and I decided to split 20 wings. Wife said the Gumbo was great with chicken, crab, okra, chunks of tomato. Our wings came out a bit after her Gumbo. These wings are so big some of them would put turkey wings to shame. But I must say they were done great. Crispy and with a touch of seasoning they did not need anything else. I ordered take out stuffed shrimp and it was okay. The prices are reasonable and the portion size is worth your money. If you are looking for a decent takeout Sams is your place. The stuffed shrimp are a bit under seasoned but there tartar sauce makes up for the that along with a touch of hot sauce. Their fries are good and I liked their hush puppies. Give them a shot but I wouldn't recommend dining in it's not that type of place. Just order takeout and doctor it up at home if needed. But I like them I go a couple times a month. read more

Most of the time the food is fantastic. We went there Friday and got take out and was a little disappointed. The onion rings are normally the best in town. This time they looked about a week old and not seasoned like normal. The shrimp and the oysters were good but not seasoned like normal. Outside not much to see and ordering from the sign menu may discourage a snobby outsider. But don't second guess this place. I told the clerk we are new to the area. With a fantastic smile, she showed us the ropes. We ordered as she suggested. WOW, I am not a catfish lover but this was amazing. This was a good find thanks to Yelp. Sam's is a casual, fast food restaurant where you can get your seafood fix served grilled or fried. I ordered three shrimp and three fish, all fried, along with green beans and french fries. I originally ordered the red beans and rice, but was told they were out. The shrimp are fresh and very good with a light breading that is nicely seasoned except for being a bit too salty. I like cocktail sauce with shrimp, but when I asked for it I was told they ran out. The man working the counter suggested I try the tartar sauce included with my meal. I told him that I don't like tartar sauce and always use cocktail. He defensively asked if I had tried their sauce and stated that it is homemade, as is their cocktail, and that people like to dip their fries in it. I told him I would give it a try, which I did, but it wasn't for me... at least not on shrimp. It tastes fine, but it is a mayo based sauce that is kind of like a remoulade and I prefer regular old cocktail sauce. Luckily there was ketchup on the table and that was a suitable substitute because the sweetness of the ketchup helped to balance the saltiness of the shrimp. The catfish is fresh and tasty, but a little tough. The fries were crisp and nicely seasoned and the green beans were yummy. My husband ordered the three fish, three oysters, and three shrimp. He said that the oysters were larger than expected, perfectly cooked, and that he thought they were exceptional. He also ordered the stuffed shrimp which is a fileted shrimp stuffed with a pimento flavored breading, dipped in batter, fried, and resembles a small corndog on a stick. He said it tasted fine, sort of like stuffed crab, but less flavorful, and probably wouldn't order it again. Now that we have had a good sampling of what they have to offer, on our next visit we will definitely be ordering the fried shrimp and oysters and hope they will have a good supply of red beans and rice as well as cocktail sauce because we are looking forward to trying them. read more

Glad we found this place! Lots of choices, reasonably priced. We all enjoyed everything we ordered. Two of us had the fried fish and shrimp combo and one had grilled shrimp. The grilled shrimp were flavorful and cooked to perfection. The same with the fried fish and shrimp. We also had green beans, red beans and rice, and coleslaw. Also very good. We wanted to try the crab cakes, so ordered one on the side. Did not look the way we expected, but boy did it taste good. Nice and fresh tasting, no fishy odor or flavor. The special sauce was good, but a tad too spicy for some in our party, who would have preferred the option of a more traditional tartar sauce. Was in town for business and my customer brought me here for lunch. It's located just outside of Barksdale Air Force Base. Can't speak for everything on the menu, but the food was delicious. I got the grilled Tilapia with my two sides being red beans/rice and corn. Loved it all. Grilled tilapia was cooked perfectly, which was topped with grilled onions and bell peppers.
