This diner used to be one of our favorite places for breakfast, but after today I will not be back. Eggs were overcooked, bacon was burnt, toast was soggy. One of us ordered an egg sandwich - the lettuce was wilted and sandwich was dry. On the other hand, the hash browns were so undercooked they were still chilled. Even the plating was sad. I had the fried chicken breast (it was a HUGE double breast), butter beans, macaroni and cheese, rice and gravy and a roll. Other family members enjoyed beef tips, fried fish, baked beans, broccoli, cheese and rice casserole, fried squash, and cornbread. It was all great! We made a road trip here a while back and it was well worth it! We had been told by several people to try this place. We tried 4 different plates. Our favorite was the pancake......they have a great pancake. The biscuits seemed homemade and they give you a ton of gravy and these were great too. Our Hamburger Steak with Grilled Onions and Brown Gravy was very good but also a little dry. Our Chicken/Country Fried Chicken with Cream Gravy was above average. The sides were delicious: Greens, Okra & Tomatoes, Macaroni, Fried Squash, Fried Okra and Mashed Potatoes with Gravy..... The Cornbread was soft and a little sweet and delicious with butter. Oh, my goodness! The Chicken and Dressing is fantastic. The portions are huge! I also got Broccoli Rice Casserole, mashed potatoes/gravy and Yams. Check online for what day they serve it because it's not every day. I got all of this for less than $10 and had plenty left over for at least one more meal. I'd like to add that the dressing is so good that my husband asked how much a pan costs just in case I ever have to cook the family a Thanksgiving dinner! Here is a down home restaurant if I ever saw one. There is so much comfort food on this menu that it's hard to figure out what to eat. I had eaten so much food this week that I was beginning to crave healthier food. Course, what do I do? I order a pork po-boy. But I did get the salad on the side instead of french fries. One thing that I thought was interesting is that when you order the dressing on the side here, they actually give you a bottle of dressing. And it's not just some non-labeled bottle, it's actually a bottle of Kraft dressing. That was sort of surprising to me. They made no bones that they purchased their dressing from a supplier instead of making it fresh. But hey, Kraft does have some good salad dressing. The Po-Boy was very tasty. The meat was tender and not dry. The lettuce was nicely shredded and the tomato slices added a little extra flavor. Yes, I actually ate the tomato. I'm just as shocked as you are for reading that. :p The salad that came with my sandwich was good. It had shredded cheese on it. Cheese always makes things taste better. They have a kid's menu with plenty of options. The kids can even order the daily special which comes with 2 veggies and bread. Adults get the same thing except they can choose 3 veggies to go with the entree and bread. Now don't let the veggies fool you. It's not just veggies you get here. It's mashed potatoes or turnip greens or mac 'n' cheese or bbq beans or potato salad. Basically, I think it's just a "veggie" alternative is all, not necessarily a vegetable. The interior, with two dining rooms, was smaller than it looked to be from the outside, possibly due to the table density. Overall, I'd go with an ok rating as you get good value here but the food quality is also average like. The fried pork chop Thursday special was good (2 fried pork chops with cornbread and 3 sides for $8.29 - so it's a lotta volume), but wife's french toast was soggy, and the coffee only lukewarm. What a disappointment. I chose their smothered pork chops, broccoli cheese casserole, yams, butter beans. The pork chop dish was awful. The sauce mixed with the thinly sliced, over cooked pork chop, was overwhelmed with this thick, globby, gravy consisting of mostly breading. The broccoli casserole & butter beans lacked seasoning. But better to under season than over season. The yams and cornbread muffin were both good. The cashier nor their wait staff ever make me feel comfortable and welcomed, when I patronize their restaurant. I will not recommend them to anyone and I will not patronize them again. Never have my sides tasted better than my meal itself. The sweet potatoes were out of this world. Something out of a grandma's kitchen. The squash was not that great, since it was really soggy, but I overlooked it for the awesomeness of the sweet potatoes. I ordered the gravy on the sid for my chicken fried steak. Im glad I did, as the steak had the right amount of crunch and flavor to leave me satisfied, The place had a very cozy feel. Old school diner that felt kinda like an old home. Whoever thinks that Strawn's Eat Shop has the best pie in town has obviously been born without a palate. I was at Strawn's recently and was saddened by the poor service and mediocre pie. We decided to have a pie date day as a family, so we all chose something different. That means I can sample more varieties. Zoe' had the peanut butter pie. It was good, but I have had better. Alli's apple pie was solid. If only it had a scoop of vanilla. Maddie ordered a chunk of chocolate cake. Very nice. Heather and I split the lemon and chocolate pies. The lemon pie is incredibly smooth and has a bright tartness. I'm pretty certain it gets that zing from lemon zest. By far, it is among the Hall of Greatest Pies. Now the chocolate is one that I haven't had the pleasure of eating before today. It's got to be scratch made with Hershey's cocoa. It imbues an incredibly deep chocolate flavor complemented with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Delicious pie. Normally, I'll get a lemon pie for my birthday. My husband and I were excited to stop in because it has been a while since the last time we ate here now that we live 30 minutes out. Boy has this place changed since 4 years ago. I ordered breakfast with my children and they brought our food out raw. I sent it back and yet again, the food was brought to us raw. I mean, how hard is it to see when the French toast is cooked? Oh, and my children ordered pancakes. The griddle must have been entirely too hot because they were burnt on on side and raw in the middle. After the waitress apologies for the disgusting french toast stating she wouldn't eat it either, the manager comes to the table to argue with me say its cooked! Wth?! This used to be my favorite place - used to have great food and a great atmosphere. Now the owner rarely shows up and the waitresses are rude and the staff is unfriendly, uncaring, and unhelpful. My last trip was the end for me - I actually found a fly in my burger and the head waitress who has named herself 'manager' asked "well what do you want me to do about it? Do you want another burger or not?" My answer? No, thanks - where there is 1 fly there's more - I'll pass. I gave up on this place. I'm done, I'll never return and I do wish this place ill will. Hopefully they will close their doors soon or at very least have an overhall of the place and get better staff and cleaner cooks. Decided to try the newer location since it was closer to our house. Grits were barely warm and lumpy. Out of the pie we wanted at 11:00 a.m. Just very disapointed in the place and the food. Will never go back. Had Sarah still been there (we understood she had moved out there), I know it would have been great, but she had moved out of the area. She knew how to run a place. Went to Southfield Grill on Southfield Friday, 24 Feb 2012, during the lunch hour rush with my partner, Jim. Found two tables available and seated quickly. Would change location, which was at the north end of the kitchen against a partition, which directed the AHU venting down and across the table, but there were only two of us and this was a table for two. I ordered the one of the three Friday specials, the fried catfish, with three sides of okra tomato mix, fried okra, cole slaw, and cornbread. Short time later, my plate arrived with heaping servings of all items. The okra tomatoes were very well seasoned and the cornbread was a wonderful cake texture and sweet. Cole slaw also was on the sweeter side. Suited my taste just fine. Wait staff, although extremely busy, were friendly and helpful, as well as knowledgeable about their product. Even though filled, I ordered my favorite dessert, coconut icebox pie. Good filling, not so good crust. Interior was loud and conversation was not easy, but the main fare was delicious, the service staff great, and they will get a return from me to try other items on the menu. read more

My husband and I were happy to see so many traditional diner items on our first visit to the grill. I ordered: roast beef, mashed potatoes, cheese and broccoli rice and green beans. Only the green beans were edible and they were out of the can. The mashed potatoes were instant, the rice had been cooked so long it had no flavor at all and had become mush, the meat was fatty and covered in globby gravy. Nothing had been seasoned. The staff was excellent and helpful and and it was crowded due to the weekday lunch hour, but even then i only waited about 30 seconds to get a table and my food was out very quickly. Its home cooking, country style and its good and plentiful. Get the specials, you cant go wrong period. I had the smothered steak and they gave me a free fillet of catfish cause i was new.
