Horrible service, horrible food in a strip mall restaurant. Restaurant wants to pretend to be high end by enforcing a very arbitrary set of dress codes. The mood was ruined by how many families were turned away by a very snooty twenty something in a tatty suit. I looked around at the clientele and wondered who this dress code was aiming at because the diners all wore cheap trainers, ragged jeans and untucked shirts of varying colors of polyester. Seems the chef has changed. We have been here several times. Food always was good but this time it was very oily. Palak Chat was also oily and tasteless. Food was also oily. What bothered us was they charge you $5.00 for one small bowl(bati) of pickle. Our bill was $175 for 5 people. This is a fine dining restaurant And when they nickel and dime you then it bothers. We asked for just fresh sliced onions and the server told us that little bit is free after that they would charge us. Not professional. We went to this place after hearing positive reviews about this place. They claim to be premium restaurant serving Indian food. It is located in an empty strip mall with a big sign around it talking about their dress code. Our disappointment started at the entrance. We were party of 12 with 6 kids. Many people travelling from out of state. One kid, Age 8, was wearing dark colored Trex pants which looked appropriate. They looked at him that they can allow other 11 people, but not that 8-year old kid!! They kept us waiting while 3 other people came back and 'inspected' the kid before allowing us. Insulting that we have to seek an approval prior a dining experience with our kids. So if your kids can't wear dress pants (as it excludes most of routine kids wear of current age) , please don't visit this place. Now coming inside the place, this premium dining place runs 'loud' music. Lighting is kept softer in attempt to keep ambience 'premium', but sound/music is not at all relaxing. There is mismatch with their vision and execution. Food was good, but not exceptional. There were some good, non traditional food items to taste, but some needs more work. Quantity was reasonable. Plating with sauces needs more effort. Overall, good food (not exceptional) with a possibility that you (or your kids) may be denied to enter. Not at all premium experience! This Friday evening, my friend and I chose Samudra for our dinner outing. Fortunately, we managed to get seated without a prior reservation. The lounge ambiance has always been a favorite of mine. Notably, they have upgraded their TV display to a really crisp and amazing life-size (or bigger) screen, which showcased groovy music and dance sequences, setting a perfect tone for the evening. For drinks, I had Woodford Reserve, while my friend enjoyed his usual Bacardi. We started with Mixed Pakora and Paalak Chaat for appetizers and ordered Masala Papad to nibble on while waiting for our starters. The food was excellent and paired wonderfully with our drinks. The Paalak Chaat was simply superb. The Mixed Pakora portion was enormous; as we couldn't finish it, we had it packed to take home. For the main course, we ordered Veg Biryani, which was in a class of its own. We thoroughly enjoyed it. A special mention to our waitress, Vaidegi, who was really nice and added to our pleasant experience. However, it is a pricey joint. While the evening was lovely, I found the pricing a bit steep. The Masala Papad, in particular, was $12, which I believe is quite overpriced. Overall, Samudra offers a delightful dining experience with a great ambiance and excellent food, but be prepared for a high bill. read more

Went to this place as a Valentine's Day lunch/dinner and honestly loved it. I ordered the pakora platter for appetizer, chicken tikka masala with butter naan and rice on the side for entree, and a mango lassi. They also gave us fryums to start off in a cute flower shape, I have never seen a restaurant done this. I really wanted to try the dessert but we were so full! I was denied entry after making a reservation with family coz son was wearing pants without pockets who they said were sweatpants. Another family with a girl wearing similar clothes were allowed right in front of us. I had to threaten them of severe consequences and they ended up not charging my card that was provided for the reservation. Stay away from this place. With my son home from college, I want to spoil him as much as possible. One of his favorite cuisines is Indian. I was excited to bring him here today. I opted to not make reservations online with my cc because there is a charge if you are late or a no-show. Upon entering the establishment, I see that there is a commotion with the party of 5 in front of us. There is some back and forth convo and then the hostess disappears and returns with the manager. She looks at one of the guy up and down and tells the group that they cannot seat them because he is wearing sweatpants and a pair of sliders. As they leave, I ask the hostess if my sandals that look like sliders were okay. She nods her head, yes. Then I see the manager's eyes targeting my son's shorts. She points to him and says that we cannot dine here because he is wearing athletic wear. My son's shorts is one solid color with no logos, more on the casual, clean, neat look. It just happens to have a cord and is made of cotton. Oddly enough, my ripped, denim shorts are allowed and so were the sneakers my son was wearing. They just lost about $300 worth of customers in a matter of minutes. Dress Code: Smart Casual - no flip flops - no athletic wear of any kind - no tank tops Unfortunately this is not based on gender, race, age so they are allow to do this. I kind of understand that they want more of an upscale clientele for their elevated establishment but where do you draw the line? This was on a Saturday morning at 11:30. My son's shorts were right above his knees while I am allowed in with my Daisy Dukes? We figured we'd give this place a shot. Once seated, we were told that thali had stopped during covid times. We came in at 4pm on the way back home to Virginia from a funeral and was glad that it was open even though it has a limited menu at this time. The palak chaat and the lamb and chicken biryani was delicious. Portions are huge so the value is there. I have family that live really close to here and they always rave about it whenever I come to visit. So, during a recent Friday night, we got a reservation for my first experience...and it was just as good as they claimed. We ordered a variety of kabobs (my favorite was the Bhut Jolokia chicken) as well as some vegetarian items (I didn't try any) and cocktails. The venue is deceptively large and swanky, the service was on-point (albeit a little slow, but worth the wait), and food, as previously mentioned, was amazing. While we love the food and the ambience and have ordered multiple times from the restaurant for both meals at home and events, I have a visceral dislike for the idea that reservations for a Central Jersey restaurant have a 4 hour cancellation policy with a $40 credit card charge if cancelled less than 4 hours. We went here recently to celebrate a family birthday. The ambiance is really nice, with good lighting and nice decor. It's the kind of place where you feel comfortable to linger and take your time with the meal. The drinks are good, very unique options with some Indian flavors incorporated! The food was pretty good, nothing to complain about but nothing to write home about either. For that price point, I'd expect to be more impressed than I was with the food and that's why I would give it an average review. It is decent, but just overpriced. The audacity of the owner of this restaurant. My husband after having a bad experience over the weekend for his birthday said he would give the restaurant (that we use to like) one more chance. As he was sitting down, already ordered food and drinks with two other guys. The server brings a phone over and it's the owner on the other line. He is telling him that he must make me take off the review I posted or else we are blacklisted and he must leave the restaurant right now. Everyone in our group that night, all 18 of us. He said he didn't need our business. Avoid this place!! There are so many other restaurants that have good food and 100000 times better service. They ended up leaving and we will never ever ever come back. I attended a friends birthday get together on Saturday night. Overall service was ok ,very rude manager We had one issue, which were the lamb chops being over done and under done. Our group sent them back. No one ate them because they were not cooked right and had no flavor. The manager and chef were told right away in a very nice manner. At the end of the night my friend wanted to speak to the general manager because our server said he cannot take off the lamb chops from our bill ($120) and the bartender was giving a lot of attitude when making our shots. He wanted to give him feedback. The GM came over, didn't want to hear it and said "you already have said your feedback, what would you like me to do." He wasn't willing to resolve or hear us out. Long story short, the gm called the owner and the owner showed up refusing to acknowledge any of our bad experiences at his restaurant. We paid and left. Tonight we came in with the birthday boy and another friend. We wanted to give this restaurant another chance. After ordering drinks and food, the owner called us and told us that if we didn't take off a review that one member of the birthday group wrote then we needed to get up and leave. That we are blacklisted even though we personally didn't leave a bad review. So all 18 people in the group are blacklisted from samudhra because one person in the group wrote a bad review. We said we would deal with it later and the owner said no, you either get the review taken off now or you leave. We left. If you want to be treated terribly then this is the restaurant for you. read more

On a whim, they can reject any of your family members to get entry, based on their mood at that moment. They charge in advance for Biryanis even before you come to the restaurant. It is a batter fried fish fillets that will make you forget other varieties of Amritsari fish and it's cousin the Lahore fish. This specific review is for their lunch thalis - both veg and non-veg. I have been there once for dinner and ordered few dishes, most of them were good and well prepared. With the same expectation made an effort to plan lunch especially to enjoy thali. Sadly, it was very very disappoint. The the lady who took the order got their only once in the entire time we were eating to ask if all was okay, with the sad expression of my wife, she just assumed all okay and left without any conversation. We had to call the servers who were dressed up in jackets to get some addons as were eating, yet we paid 18% tip on a disappointed meal and service. The thali had variations where all the dry food served like fish, kabob and pakoda (veg thali) was all dry and microwaved in oven and served. like you would get in buffet. Even a buffet in Honest Restaurant is so much better and cheaper and good quality. The shrimp was in a gravy bowl that tasted more like water with masala in it. The lamp or goat was so so....chicken was the only thing i could eat and thats what i landed up eating from that entire thali and with couple of bread pieces. In non-veg thali, who cares about a piece of boiled egg with very thin masala around it??!! They had bread choices of only Naan or Puri, so no wheat roti. Dessert was "rice" kheer and nothing great but sweet, would prefer gulab jamun. Veg thali, the spinach was like dal with paneer, neither i could call it palak paneer or palak daal with cream floating - like white gravy. I am sorry to say, in short very high expectation to a total flopped plan of my wife and i planning our lunch between work with my mother (and wearing formals so that they dont have reason to kick us out) and especially getting out there for a sad $100 meal for the 3 thalis and a tip.
