    Black Manhattan
    Alex N.

For our first Parents Weekend visit at Rutgers, I made a reservation at the Frog and Peach. It's in a newer (re)development that put me in mind of the Naval Yard in Baltimore: cultivated, consciously developed, and oddly quiet for such a busy city. There's nothing kitschy, accretive, or quirky about the neighborhood, Hiram Square, in the same way that a McMansion development often appears, and like the Navy Yard, it bears its share of social scrutiny. Rhonda and I each ordered the Black Manhattan, which added Averna to the classic cocktail. I'm often suspicious of substitutions or additions like this, but the herbal, licorice flavors paired superbly with the drink. It had an inky blackness I appreciated in both the title and the presentation. For apps, Aaron tried the bone marrow, which didn't surprise me. I expected a couple of cross-cut shins, with a spoon to scoop out the marrow. Instead, the bones were cut longitudinally, such that the marrow (and the mushroom stuffing) was easily accessible. I can't say that I preferred it with the stuffing to straight gelatinous and umami-rich marrow, but it was still good. It came with bread for serving. I had the oysters, which were billed as from nearby Fishers Island. They were briny and delicious, up there with Sweet Amalia oysters in my opinion. I don't need mignonette with oysters when they're good. The muddy Delaware Bay ones we often get in South Jersey require a flavor boost, but not these. Rhonda had the the pumpkin ricotta gnocchi as an appetizer. These were fantastic, with only a hint of pumpkin (and not the cloying "pumpkin spice" version of things that assault the senses around this season). They were clearly hand cut, varying wildly from pillow to pillow in shape. They were firm for ricotta dumplings. The garlic mushroom broth and escarole added great flavor and texture. I adored my bite. Sadly, I neglected to take a picture. Aaron and Rhonda both ordered the duck breast. This was an excellent preparation, cooked perfectly, and the baby turnips, almond spatzle, spicy duck sausage, dried cranberries, and a balsamic fig puree, which, composed, added a ton of flavor and textural contrast. I have an fulsome appreciation for the humble monkfish since my college days, when I swore off meat but ordered (and prepared) fish as often as I could. The tightly wrapped loins evoked the over-worn comparison to lobster tails, but I can't crow about that: their lightness was emboldened by the prosciutto, which imparted a nice salty crust to the delicate fish. The shaved squash offered a ribbony pasta texture and chew without adding unwanted carbs, and the lemon in the sauce was nicely balanced with a touch of fat. Monkfish and a glass of Sancerre... perfect any night.

Interesting room on the edge of downtown New Brunswick The cocktails are creative. The Gnocchi was flavorful (they can make an entree portion). The service was attentive and they offer valet parking.

Came here for restaurant week and for their 5 course peach tasting! I love that they switch up the menu for special dinner nights Ambiance: - dim lighting at dinner time w/ warm candle light at each table - lofted floors for seating area - moody dark walls and floorings Service: - multi- course plates came out at the perfect time to allow for finishing the previous course and chatting at the table - main waiter was attentive taking our orders but then was very busy with other tables because all tables were booked - second waiter was attentive in refilling water and taking more drink orders Food: Fave peach courses were the charred peach bruschetta and poached lobster! I love the unique take on a classic bbq plate with Iberian pork belly Restaurant week: - Black Truffle Ricotta Gnocchi: gnocchi was so soft and pillowy! Light truffle flavor, broth had so much onion flavor - grilled Balsamic Marinated Hanger Steak: steak could be more tender for me but it was a perfect medium rare. Veal jus paired so well with the steak and potatoes. I loved the assorted potatoes!! - peach Sorbet: lots of fresh peach flavor. Texture was slightly gummy for me.

Loved this restaurant! Lots of people coming to table. Efficient, good service. The burger was delicious and so were the drinks. Bartender came to table to check on the drink too!

The Frog and The Peach is such a lovely spot! The valet parking makes arriving stress-free, and the staff is beyond attentive... they really make you feel taken care of. And the food... every single dish we tried was absolutely amazing, full of flavor and beautifully presented. Honestly, it's hard to pick a favorite! A wonderful place for a special night out or just to treat yourself.

This was my first time here I was seated promptly by the hostess but i asked to move because they sat my party near a door and it was cold the hostess apologized and moved us. The place has a nice upscale date night vibe to it.I started out with Free Range Organic Quail as a appetizer. It was good the meat was juicy but the portions could have be a little more generous for the price(Which is probably my only issue with this place overall)but taste wise I liked it. My main course was Cacio e Pepe the pasta was definitely fresh and the sauce was very good and creamy. The pepper wasn't overpowering and complimented the dish I finished the dish in three bites. I chose creme brulee for dessert and it was awesome one of the better creme brulees I have had and the only dish I felt like wasn't skimpy on portion size. Overall this is a great place for a date night or just a meal in general. My only issue was the portion size of what I had for the price I paid. But I like places where I walk out totally full. But the food was good and I will definitely return

Went for Thanksgiving and wasn't disappointed. Service was exceptional with a very friendly staff. I never want to use the word exceptional because it makes me sound pretentious but that's the only word I can use for the food. The turkey was the juiciest I've ever had in my life. The generously sized crème brûlée was perfect. No notes. Will be back for regular service.

We had Sunday brunch at The Frog & The Peach. We were seated in the Garden Room. It's just lovely! January is chilly but we were quite comfortable. The service was a team approach. It was fine. The food was amazing! We started with the hash brown poutine. No picture because my husband did in immediately. It was so good! I had the lobster eggs Benedict. OMG! I was practically purring. My husband had the French toast with toasted marshmallow and peanut butter. Amazing. We had the chocolate truffle for dessert. Delicious! Looking forward to a return to try more.

Picked the place for a business lunch. It's tucked in at the end of a block and the street is permit parking only. They have a small parking lot if you are lucky. I like the old timer bar and the dark dining room. We were there on a sunny day so the sunroom was the perfect setting. The service is very professional and the menu is interesting. We were having a hard time deciding what to get and when we heard the lunch special we immediately jumped on the specials. From the dishes we had (2 apps, 2 main, and 2 deserts) it seems anything you order could not go wrong. I enjoyed my dining experience very much. But it was a business lunch so I couldn't get the full vibe. Would be happy to return and explore more.

I had not been here in some time, but it remains as good as I recalled it. We sat in the garden room which is delightful. Food was wonderful - very contemporary American with a bit of farm to table. Highly recommend! Keep up the great work!

Back at F&P years later. The ambiance was still beautiful and intimate. This time I sat in the outside dining area. I enjoyed my meal (ordered the steak with onion tart) for drink I had the bad decision. It was small but strong. If had an interesting peanut after taste.

TLDR: Service and atmosphere are amazing. The food has its hits and misses. We went for a member of our party's birthday. After making our reservation the restaurant called us so they could deliver a card to our birthday person. It was the cutest hand drawn card. The waiter that served us was exceptionally friendly. I changed my order (in a moment of indecision) after placing it, and the waiter was happy to make the change. The waitstaff overall was very attentive and friendly, and made the experience a delight. The room we sat in was similar to a greenhouse. It was brightly lit and was filled with plants and decorations. With heated ceilings and floors it would be a cozy space on a snowy day. Most of the food was great. The oysters were fresh with good accompaniments; the flatbread was well cooked and had fresh toppings; the sweet potato fries were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. However the burger, though perfectly cooked, was a bit under seasoned and lacking in flavor. The experience at The Frog and The Peach was great, and I'll assume that the burger was just off on the day. I would definitely go back to try it again. For now I'll give them the benefit of doubt and re assess this review when I return.

I recently tried the chef's 8-course tasting menu, and it was perfectly paced--the small plates are proportionately sized so you leave feeling satisfied rather than overwhelmed. Every dish is a standout with deep, "stacked" flavors; even the ingredients I was skeptical about ended up being favorites. Nothing needed a drop of extra seasoning. The service sets a warm, welcoming tone from the start. We were offered Oshibori (Japanese warm towelettes) to refresh our hands, and getting a fresh set of utensils with every course was a high-end touch I really appreciated. Menu Highlights: Taro Fritter: A sweet-textured appetizer inspired by Chinese desserts, topped with caviar and soy-pickled beets. It was a beautiful way to awaken the palate. Mackerel Crudo: As someone who isn't usually a fan of raw dishes, I was surprised by how much I loved this. It's light, perfectly acidic, and balanced with plum, ponzu, and apple. Grilled Sunchoke: This was "rustic elegance" in a bowl. The smell alone is incredible, and the combination of ginger crab and shellfish butter is pure comfort. Smoked Duck: Topped with black winter truffle and caramelized onions in a gochujang sauce--absolutely excellent cook and presentation. Braised Beef Cheek: So tender you can skip the knife and just use your fork. Since I forgot to BYOB, I tried their house-made Luck & Love hibiscus drink. It's hands-down the best hibiscus tea I've ever had--I actually tried to buy one to-go, but they only make enough for dine-in guests! It's a fantastic spot to bring friends or loved ones, though I'd recommend arriving early. The parking lot is extremely tight, so you might need to look for space in the lot next door.

All the food was good, except the fish and chips was batter and very little fish. The old school ambiance is really nice. A short walk later, I found myself at Destination Dogs, a place I had seen in photographs that suggested capaciousness. In reality, it is smaller.  This is not a complaint, just an observation.  I remember once hearing something about the contents of small packages. At 12:30 the place was full. Packed with humanity and appetite. I was seated quickly, as if someone had anticipated my hunger in advance. From the bar came the sound of construction crews discussing their midday rituals. Apparently this is where they come on Fridays, to repair themselves while they repair the city. It explained everything. Service was swift and attentive, a minor miracle given the crowd. I began with a Scotch egg, an item that seemed to have wandered in from another story entirely. I ordered it for that reason. I had always imagined my first Scotch egg would be eaten in an English pub under low ceilings and older regrets. Instead, here it was. Perfectly crisp, warm, and generous. The universe does not ask for permission. Then came the main event. The menu is an atlas of hot dogs. Domestic. International. Proteins in tube form arranged like possibilities. There is even an invitation to build your own, which I accepted. I attempted to recreate a favorite from Crif Dogs, a thing called the Spicy Redneck. Bacon wrapped dog. Pickled jalapenos. Coleslaw. Simple in theory. Destination Dogs improved upon it in every way that matters. The bacon crisped with purpose. The jalapenos spoke clearly. The coleslaw behaved. The hot dog itself seemed proud to be there. All of this, plus a 16 ounce beer, cost me about twenty five dollars with tip. A small price for order in a chaotic universe. Five stars. Not because perfection exists, but because this comes close enough to make the argument.
