We called here before coming to ask what time they closed and were told they close at 9:30 but the kitchen closes between 9 and 9:15. We drove a long distance here and arrived at 8:45, only to then be told we couldn't be seated because the kitchen was already closed. We pointed out the person who answered the phone said the kitchen closed at 9:15. The person who answered said she misunderstood and thought we were asking about take out. However, when we then asked if we could take out (at 8:45), we were again told it was impossible since the kitchen was already closed. So how does the explanation that she thought we meant take out even make sense? Of course, we had wasted a lot of time driving there and were then stuck scrambling for other nearby options at that hour. This alone would be a reason for never coming back. read more

Hidden in plain sight, this was a nice little thai spot on Main St. Southbury. Wife and I ordered takeout on a Friday evening and the order was prepared quickly and accurately. When stopping in for pickup, the smaller sized dining room was nearly full...and for good reason. We ordered crab rangoon, papaya salad, larb, beef pad see u, and chicken pad thai. The portions were generous and we'll have food for another meal. The pad thai and pad see u were both very tasty and noodles were cooked perfectly. The crab rangoon was unlike any I've ever had because there was real crab meat in it, not the imitation "krab" like at many other asian restaurants. The papaya salad and larb were clearly fresh, but just lacked a little something. At other Thai restaurants they seemed to be a little more flavorful. Perhaps a little more dressing next time. If that is their standard preparation, then next time I'd request a little more or try something else. It won't stop me from coming back and trying it again. Strongly recommend. read more

Ambience seems OK with a Thai flare but when we go and we get takeout like tonight after I finished my entire meal, I still had a quarter of the takeout tray was string beans. I ordered drunken noodles with duck There wasn't a noodle to be found in the entire meal. Got my wife crunchy pad Thai and after she finished her meal half of the tray was chow mein style noodles and it was supposed to be a shrimp and chicken crunchy pad Thai and she had two minuscule shrimp. The rest was overcooked, chicken, dry, and the noodles as I previously mentioned. We've given this restaurant at least six attempts and we're gonna move on. I really am disappointed because this used to be a really good restaurant. Not sure if they changed owners cooks or whatever but these two meals cost me over $42 and I got vegetables and overcooked chicken and minuscule seafood. read more

Great stop for a quick lunch! I love "a little bit of everything" type lunch. Samui had the perfect lunch special for that- choice of cup of soup, choice of small app (2 piece dumpling, spring roll, or salad), and an entree! Being it was my first time there I really liked the variety. I had the Pad See U with vegetables, coconut soup and spring rolls. The pad see u was delicious, and though it doesn't look like it don't let the container fool you, it was a big portion, a full plate of noodles and fresh crisp veggies. The spring rolls were tasty, I liked that they had glass noodles in them. The coconut soup was good also, it had mushrooms and chicken in it. (It does have a slight hint of fish sauce taste, similar to the after taste of curry). I also ordered wings - they were a bigger size wing than most thai restaurants i've been to and not as salty. That being said they definitely needed the dipping sauce they came with. Overall I would say everything was a lot less salty than other places which I appreciated. Somehow I drove right past it in the plaza - it's unit #305 and faces main street south. (Same plaza as nardelli's, its next to ion bank). Delicious food with just the right amount of spice! Would recommend the drunken noodle (the lemon grass chicken just tasted like grilled chicken, so just go with the regular drunken noodle). Since moving to Southbury in mid September of this year I have been beyond surprised how good this establishment is and consistent. The only two items I have ordered here that were horrendous were their wings and dumplings which were tasteless. The massoman curry, shumai, panang curry, drunken noodles and pad Thai have always been spot on and wonderful. We all have bad days so I will be back but Tuesday night I had their drunken noodles and coconut soup which were horrible! Not just a little off but just plain awful! I don't know if I caught them on a bad night but if this happens the next visit I will never return. It's not cheap and there's no excuse for being consistent and then going to complete opposite extreme. Had this been my first experience here I would never return. Hoping this was an isolated incident and they read this post. Waste of money! Update: I returned this evening and got the same dishes. Big disappointment :( when this happens out of the nowhere it points to a change in the chef. I have no-doubt that's the reason behind the sudden change in taste. Sad because I live close by and was so happy and even recommended this restaurant to all my friends. I cannot return at this point since I have returned again only to be disappointed again. I just came back from vacation so I was craving some Asian cuisine and this was the best spot for it. $14 got me drunken noodles, 2 dumplings and a Tom yum soup. Everything was so delicious!! I was almost about to give this place two stars, but considering that this is Southbury, where it feels like there is not really all that much in terms of good food I'll at least give it a three. The lunch menu here seems to be a decent value, and most of the food is pretty good. So why the mediocre rating? The soup. I ordered the Tom Yum soup here and it was by far the worst Tom Yum soup I have ever had. It is probably in competition with the crappy diner with the sawdust textured matzoh ball soup as the worst soup I've ever consumed in my life. Where did everything go wrong? When we opened the menu, we were super excited to discover Samui is the sister restaurant to our usual go-to, Bangkok Room in Ansonia! Service was poor. Server almost argued with us if we asked for an extra plate. Had a terrible attitude. My daughter liked her dish. That's the only reason I gave two stars. We come back to this Thai restaurant each time were back in CT visiting from PA! About 3 to 4 times per year over the last 2 years. Last nights dinner caused my opinion/review to drop to 3 stars. I will keep them on our list of places to visit each time were back in the area...but when we come back in October... it may be skipped. We met up with my Mom at 6 pm (made reservations as it was a Friday evening) and were seated quickly but thats where it ended. Allow me to preface the following by saying they were definitely short-staffed. I think there were 3 young women waiting on tables, handling the steady flow of take out customers and cashing out...maybe even preparing food?! So, maybe 2 individuals on the floor at once taking care of at least 8-10 tables at a given time. We ordered drinks about 10 minutes after we were seated. Then waited almost 10 more minutes; we ordered our entrees at that time too. It was now 6:20. I ordered an iced tea. Nothing else was included. No lemon, no sweetener. No straw. When I asked for sugars the woman literally tossed 4 Splenda packets on the table in front of my Mom. When she came back I asked for sugar as I never use artificial sweeteners. She said 'No sugar'. That was that. Three dinners. Drunken noodles with chicken and 2 sesame chickens with white rice. Now we play the waiting game... and listen to one another stomachs growl. (I even had time to go to the smoke shop next door and purchase multiple Mega millions and chat with the woman at that shop before any food materialized -went back to the restaurant after 10 minutes and still no food). The sesame chicken dinners arrived at 7:10pm. The drunken noodles arrived about 5 minutes after we received the sesames. Both sesame chicken dinners were room temperature and the rice bowls that were brought to the table were literally cold and formed into sticky rice balls. I've never been at Samui Thai when it was really busy... meaning all tables in both rooms are full and this wasn't an exception. It was obvious the take out business was taking precedence over the customers sitting there as one couple sat down and after 15 minutes of no response from the waitstaff- they got up and left. Take drink orders at the very least...:( We didn't see any of the usual Guys working there so we have to believe they were all off on this particular Friday night or the restaurant is under new management. Stopped here after spending a few hours at shepaug eagle viewing. Loved it ! We both got the lunch special- Tom Yom soup with huge shrimp!! , then I had the rolls and green curry with chicken and veggies with rice. All so yum - flavorful and with just a bit of a kick . Hubby had the salad and fried rice, which he liked. The salad could have been chopped up a bit more, but that is being a bit picky. The guy at the front was waiting on a few tables but despite that , I never had to wait for anything and the service and food was delightful. Holy crap! What a hidden gem just off I-84 and so worth the trip. Why can't this place be closer to my house? Pad Thai and drunken noodles are perfectly balanced with sweet, sour and a touch of heat on the drunken noodles that uses ground chicken as it should be. Orange chicken is unique and a kid pick that is a crispy fried breast of chicken with a sweet and tangy sauce. The crying Tiger was low carb friendly with sliced steak on a bed of salad and a tart and spicy dressing on the side. Kids loved the sticky rice and Thai iced tea. Great beer list worth a try. I just felt like something summery in flavor, so I ordered the orange chicken while half expecting the more commonly found orange chicken dish in Chinese takeout and this dish was completely different in a good way. The orange sauce covered the whole plate with a crispy fried chicken breast atop that was surprisingly tasty. My wife ordered the appetizer sampler but unfortunately, seafood was in some of its aspects and not being a seafood lover, she didn't enjoy the whole sampler. The dipping sauces were good. One of my favorite Thai restaurants I've ever been to! Every dish we have gotten here taste incredible! To start: Thai sampler If you're going on a date or with a family it's a great appetizer to get because of how shareable it is and how you get to try a bunch of different foods. I always get the Tom Yum soup or Beef Salad depending on what I'm in the mood for more. I also recommend trying the Panang curry if you like a peanuty taste and love curry! For my main course, I usually get Drunken noodles which is my all-time favorite Thai dish or I get Pad See U which is a more sweet, soy sauce flavored noodle dish. What makes me even happier is that the staff was so accepting of my service dog. So we had heard this place was very good before trying it. We tried Samui for the first time getting take out on Valentines Day... Placed my order way ahead of time and showed up early to pick up. Upon arrival, I noticed there were only a few people working there on a very busy night. Long line of people waiting for their orders. Things did not look promising. However, I looked through the window of the door leading to the kitchen and saw the food being prepared by older ladies. That was all that I needed to see to make me wait it out. So glad I did. "Jay loves Thailand" Our friend Jay recommended Samui because he has visited Thailand on two occasions in the past few years. He said this is the closest he's had to the thai food he enjoyed while vacationing in Thailand. I've never been to Thailand but I will agree with Jay, the food is incredible. The restaurant is small but it has a nice constant flow of customers. Thoughout our dinner, a table would finish and more people would flow in to fill the spot. Nice easy comfortable atmosphere. Our waiter was very good. He explained items on the menu and made suggestions that we appreciated. I began with a Tom Yum soup. Thai spicy hot and sour soup with shrimp, mushrooms, scallions, and cilantro. Very bright flavorful soup. My wife had Chicken Mango Curry. Chicken, mango, zucchini, onion, carrot, bell pepper, and tomatoes in a yellow curry sauce. It was delicious. On the menu, it is the Shrimp Mango Curry but they accomodated her with chicken because she doesn't like seafood. I had the Sizzling Seafood. Stir fried mixed seafood with bean thread noodles, onion, celery, bell pepper, and basil in a special homemade herb crushed spicy sauce and served on a sizzling hot plate. It was great. Nothing compares to the mind boggling amazing flavors of thai food. It was soooo good, we want to bring everyone there to taste it.
