Thai in love special fried rice w/shrimp
    Scott K.

We've been coming here for a few years now. We eat in and take out. The service when eating in is always attentive. It's a small and fairly intimate space. Historically, everything we've had has been excellent. However, last night, the food was mediocre. I would guess they had a new cook, but I don't know for sure. We got pad Thai, spicy basil stir fry, fresh rolls, and Thai in love special fried rice with shrimp. The fresh rolls were good, much smaller than usual. The pad Thai was ok, dryer and smaller portions than in the past. The fried rice was bland, nothing special about it. I didn't have the spicy basil. I'm hoping it was just a part time new cook this time, otherwise likely the last time there.

Cute decorations! Unfortunately, this order of pad thai with crispy chicken was inedible. The noodles had an odd smell that turned my stomach. Luckily, the gracious server allowed me to return it and get something else - Pad See U. Very good choice, great flavor.

From the outside, Thai In Love is pretty non-descript. They even have an old diner sign pointing down on the building. Its next to a gas station, and the parking lot spaces are a bit non-defined. But inside, it's adorable. Love (or symbols there of) are everywhere. There are boths and tables, and the check even came out on a candy heart plate! That alone is delightful. But then the food - yum! I don't even eat Thai that often and I knew I was getting quality ingredients and excellent cooking. The pad Thai with shrimp had well cooked shrimp and noodles. The crab ragoons were very cheesy. They were also a different type of shape them I normally see at Chinese restaurants. The shrimp on the beach were a bit messy to eat, but they were on a tray and again, well cooked. A great meal and experience!

Fire dish! Very good and great amount of spice. It tasted fresh and would definitely get their food again. Inside was small and kitchen looked out of sorts as it also looked like they were performing their own maintenance. The service was alright while they weren't very busy. The food topped the experience.

Visited here from TN. Food was amazing! Portion size was perfect and atmosphere is super friendly.

The small places are always the best! This gem of a Thai restaurant was well worth it!

It's not too often I get to go back and revisit my reviews, but yesterday I think I've had enough…read morechange in opinion about ThaiBowL (still can't get over that capital L) that I think an update is an order. This was originally review 148 (149 if you want to count the one review I had that had been deleted) out of all the reviews I've done. Before I get into what changed, I will point to the one thing I stand most by: the Crab Rangoon. This time I had it served to me on a plate, with a separate section for the plum sauce, and this time I had a small pile of shredded carrot and a leaf or two of greens. My opinion about the Crab Rangoon remains the same, which is to say they're outstanding. The plum sauce I've come to learn is the sweetest part of the dish and was a big reason as to how the dish ended up being so sweet. The filling to breading ratio is top-notch, the breading is crispy without feeling like I'm eating mushy bread, and the flavor of the filling is divine. So into what changed. You might have gotten the hint when I talked about the plating of the Crab Rangoon, but I dined in this time, and honestly, it's much better to eat this in the restaurant than to just go to the take-out window. If you have time and are in Watertown, I would definitely recommend parking your car and coming in. It's a cozy interior that's very casual. It's not quite at the level of fine dining, but it is still an intimate place to eat, maybe even romantic. It's very well-decorated, and the employees here are very friendly. Would I say they treat you like family? Ehhhhh..... I don't know about that one, but maybe the next step down it's a little clearer. As for what else I had this time around, please give a warm welcome to the Thai Iced Coffee, the Red Duck Curry with white rice, and the Fried Ice Cream! The Red Curry is spicy, but not unbearably so. The Iced Coffee actually pairs perfectly with this to cool down the heat (I actually had to order 2 of those coffees believe it or not). The duck was crispy and tender at the same time and the vegetables in the curry were for the most part great. My only knock on the dish would be the eggplant. That did come out mushy, but luckily there were only like 2 slices of it, so it wasn't a big deal. You can use the spoon they provide to ladle some of that sauce onto the rice, which actually gives the rice more flavor. As for the Iced Coffee, it was a great coffee and I would definitely have this iced coffee any time I come here and have one of their curries. Does it carry the whole meal on its own? No. But as a drink to help balance things out, it's a winner. As for the fried ice cream, they did phenomenal. You actually have to let the ice cream melt slightly to get into it because the ice cream inside the coating is still cold enough to be hard to cut into with a spoon. But it was a delicious dessert to end things off on. I would like to have this with chocolate ice cream, but that's just a personal preference and not sure how that would work. lol I think now that I've had the full restaurant experience here, I can safely say I was a little harsh giving this a 4 the last time around, and even that was still a good meal. The ambiance, the service, and the fact I got to try more things I ended up liking enough to recommend to others was enough for me to bring this up to the full 5. This will definitely be my Waterbury area option for Thai food going forward.

The food was alright, the flavor wasn't as strong like what I'm used to. If you don't like spice,…read morethis might be good for you. I would say the best thing were the spring rolls since they tasted fresh and the sauce was flavorful. Service was fast. If you're doing takeout make sure you ask for multiple utensils or else they'll only give you one. The outside was nice and had outdoor seating.

"You're not a princess I'm not prince charming Speak with…read moreyour tongue, use body language And pull your skin like wrapping paper round my heart" (Graham Parker) The last time I stepped into this building was a few years ago when it was occupied by the Lemongrass Asian Grill. Today was my birthday, so my dinner spot of choice meant a return here to experience a meal at the newish Charming Thai Restaurant. And we left a few hours later agreeing that this place is fantastic. Soon after we were seated, we met Jessica, who was our principal server. She was an absolute delight with a fantastic personality. She started off with some complimentary noodles and sweet duck sauce. The menu is extensive, with most of the traditional Thai favorites, so think Pad Thai, Drunken Noodle, Fried Rices, Lo Meins, and Pad See-Ew. Other groupings include Chef Specials, Classic Entrees, Curries, and a full slate of appetizers, salads, soups, Pho, and Ramens. When you go through their menu, the various combinations of entrée and protein choices are in the 200 range. So pretty much anyone can eat their favorite Asian food here. We started off with a cup of Wonton Soup (with 6 big wontons) and a cup of Tom Kha Soup with two big shrimp at $5.99 each. The Tom Kha had a mild coconut taste, but I don't mean that in a negative way. I order this a lot, and some places really load up on the coconut flavor so much that the soup resembles a strong thick ice cream topping. Their soup was thinner than some but had enough flavor that it was fantastic. Oh, and those two plump shrimps in my bowl were perfect. We split an $8 order of six pork pot stickers, and they were cooked beautifully without a hint of grease and stuffed with a nice ground pork filling. For our main meal we split a $15.99 order of Chicken Pad Thai. We ordered it mild, but since I like spice, I asked for some extra zip on the side and Jessica brought out a cute little twin dish of Sriracha sauce and Sichuan pepper powder to ramp up the firepower. We loved the Pad Thai, it had plenty of chicken, the noodles were well cooked, and most of all it was sauced perfectly. Not too dry, not too wet, but just perfect. As we were paying our bill, the fact that it was my birthday came up, and Jessica made us promise not to leave yet because she wanted to give me something. That turned out to be a complimentary dish of sweet coconut rice with sliced mango. The portions were so generous that some of the Tom Kha and Pad Thai are now in our refrigerator for tomorrow. Thank you, Jessica, and JJ who tag-teamed us tonight, and here's a special shout-out to Lucy who made the magic happen in the kitchen. The food, the service, the value, and the atmosphere were all exceptional. If you like Thai food as much as we do, head on out to Route 4 and treat yourself to a charming dinner experience at Charming Thai.

We drove a long distance here and arrived at 8:45, only to then be told we couldn't be seated because the kitchen was already closed. However, when we then asked if we could take out (at 8:45), we were again told it was impossible since the kitchen was already closed. So how does the explanation that she thought we meant take out even make sense? Of course, we had wasted a lot of time driving there and were then stuck scrambling for other nearby options at that hour. This alone would be a reason for never coming back.

When stopping in for pickup, the smaller sized dining room was nearly full...and for good reason. We ordered crab rangoon, papaya salad, larb, beef pad see u, and chicken pad thai. The portions were generous and we'll have food for another meal. The pad thai and pad see u were both very tasty and noodles were cooked perfectly. The crab rangoon was unlike any I've ever had because there was real crab meat in it, not the imitation "krab" like at many other asian restaurants. The papaya salad and larb were clearly fresh, but just lacked a little something. At other Thai restaurants they seemed to be a little more flavorful. Perhaps a little more dressing next time. If that is their standard preparation, then next time I'd request a little more or try something else. It won't stop me from coming back and trying it again. Strongly recommend.
