Super lame gelato place. $7.95 gives you a tiny a cup of gelato probably equivalent to just two heaping tablespoons of gelato. They actually level it off in the cup with a scraper so it's level with the top of the cup rather than it being above the top of the cup, giving you the most minimal amount of gelato possible. I've never heard of any gelato place doing this. Totally not worth it. Very disappointing. read more

"San Anselmo Gelato" has been a longstanding business that has been around for several decades. That can speak volumes since this place has been consistent throughout the years. I actually used to come here quite frequently when I lived in Marin County and attended classes at College of Marin. So I figure why not give this place a try again with an updated review to go with it? Located in the heart of downtown San Anselmo, I came here during the evening of Sunday 10/9/2022 at around 7:45pm. Not sure if it would be open or not, I looked on the Yelp app as well as checking out Google to make sure I made the special trip there. Luckily I parked directly in front of the business as this is a very sleepy town after dark. But it was thriving with customers inside as well as the brightly lit gelato neon sign (as shown in my photo I took). One thing that can be a little bit misleading is that all flavors of the gelato are covered and not visible. To me, I at least like to see the food I'm going to order. However, I went the safe route and went with a small cup (priced at around $6.50); half chocolate and half vanilla. But what really irritated me is that the owner would not even let me take pictures of his business. He even had an attitude towards me as this really tarnished the image of my whole experience here. We live in a time where everyone enjoys taking food photos so this really caught me off guard. After making my payment and proceeding outside, the gelato is good, but not great. It has the texture of a sherbet while lacking the creaminess of actual Italian gelato. My recommendation would be to visit North Beach in San Francisco where they have much better tasting gelato options. Either way, I am going to give this place only 3 out of 5 stars as the nostalgia brought back memories from years past, but my current experience did not live up to its expectations. read more

Located in downtown San Anselmo is this cute little Gelato spot that has over 40 flavors! Perfect for a nice afternoon with close parks to enjoy your gelato. Came here on a Sunday afternoon and I asked what was the most popular and the worker said they're all good. Our group all did a small cup but halved the flavors we all happen to get half mint chocolate chip and all got another flavor. I got this chocolate caramel that had some chunks of chocolate, SOO GOOD. Another person got pistachio, and the other person got another vanilla mix one. So good and a great treat for the kids too. They have cones but cups are less messy on a hot day. Perfect for dessert in the town and on a hot day! Parking isn't too bad, there's street parking and neighborhood parking, kind of tight but also a great place to walk around. read more

The gelato is spot on and the place has a very cozy feel. The back seating is amazing and the windows cracked open with the fresh pine/forest air really puts the cherry on top. I love everything about this place and I love the overlook on the creek. And after reading the other reviews I had the hispanic lady today and she was very kind. The ice cream is good and if you know what you want, have at it. But avoid this place if you have kids who are undecided, they don't give tastes. And don't expect a friendly face. There was no one else in the shop, so no rush. But I was barked at a couple of times to decide what size I wanted. Taking your kids to ice cream is supposed to be fun. The guy who works here seemingly everyday takes all the joy out of it. He seems pained by being asked for a scoop of ice cream and goes out of his way to be so rude to customers. I recently went in there with my 6 year old and there were zero customers there and asked to sample a flavor only to be met with the most inappropriate hostility by the shop employee. After my lunch, I drove here to look for my two friends Indiana Jones and Yoda at the Imagination Park, then I decided what a nice sunny day, and I said ooh look a gelato place! When I walked past this gelato place and peered inside it was closed. :( As I was walking away to look at some art by the cross bridge, an elderly gentleman came towards me and asked if I wanted ice cream and I said yes, but the place is closed. He said I can open it up for you just wait. I said ok! :) I asked him what flavors are most popular and he said all the flavors listed on the window outside are all popular. So I randomly chose the Burgundy cherry and the almond mocha fudge. He said do you want medium size cup, I said sure! I will splurge why not! LOL The cherry was perfect flavor and texture! If you like lots of nuts then the Almond Mocha Fudge is for you. It was a miss for me, I probably should have gone for a flavor with less stuff inside the gelato like the lemon or ginger flavors. Today, Saturday, the 31st, my friend and I had an unpleasant experience with a male employee while visiting your San Anselmo location. We asked for three flavors in a large gelato cup, and instead of politely informing us that only two flavors were allowed, the employee rudely told my friend, "We can't do more than two; you can get another flavor in a separate cup." His tone and demeanor were dismissive and unwelcoming. To make matters worse, he treated the customers after us with much more kindness and respect. As Hispanic customers, my friend and I couldn't help but feel targeted, as it seemed like we were being treated differently because of our ethnicity--even though the employee himself appeared to be Hispanic. This made us feel unwelcome and disrespected. I hope you can address this issue to ensure a more inclusive and respectful environment for all customers in the future. RUDDEST service I've ever encountered by the guy serving the gelato EVER. We came in at 755pm while the doors were opened while he was serving someone else. When he asked us to order he said "quick because I have to go" when he was charging us he asked us if we were paying by cash or card and when we said card he said "I don't take card" when I left I told him he provided an awful service which prompted him to give me a threatening stare. Review #279 - 2018 After our church picnic & a hike up to the hippie tree, I decided to take the kids shopping and then treat them to some gelato. We showed up around 5 PM. Thankfully, this place was one of the few places that stayed open on Labor Day. The drive was actually a lot further in than I had expected, but I can't complain too much since there wasn't anything else nearby that answered their phones when I called. Parking was pretty convenient as there seemed to be plenty of street parking around the shops. The town is pretty small so you can tell that most of the people here probably recognize their regular customers. I asked to try the coppa mista, I believe that was the name, it had a blend of pistachio, almond, chocolate and coffee or something along that line. It sounded very interesting, but just wasn't my type of flavor so I went with a small cup of my usual, hazelnut. My niece got a medium of the wookie cookie and my nephew got a medium of something that I can't recall. We all enjoyed our gelato. My daughter enjoyed it so much that she went back inside after we finished ours and wouldn't leave until I got her another one. I decided to just purchase a waffle cone for her to lure her out of the store, but she wanted ice cream inside the cone so we had to ask the man if he'd be willing to sell us just half a scoop and he was kind enough to. Went in for gelato today with a friend and had the rudest server. I asked for a sample and was abruptly told "no samples". Then I ordered the double espresso bean gelato. What he served did not look like what I ordered and when I tasted it, clearly it was vanilla bean. When I brought this to his attention, he argued with me about it and insisted it was double espresso bean & that he was right (he wasn't) and then, in an extremely irritated manner, he told me he'd give a refund- I said I didn't want or need a refund, I'd take the cappuccino chip instead and handed back the wrong gelato, which he snatched and then opened the register and threw $6 at me, refusing to serve me. I have been going there for many years - since they first opened and even twice in the last 2 weeks and the older gentleman who usually serves (there for years, might be the owner) couldn't be nicer. This place is quite unique and definitely fits the rustic and charming feel of San Anselmo. I came here after a long hike at Mt Tam and was craving something cool and sweet. This place has some great and interesting flavors. I loved the strawberry flavor the best. I got a medium sized cup for $5.50. While the flavors and varieties of Gelato are great, customer service here is lacking to say the least. I would agree with other yelpers that the owner comes off quite rude and non approachable. I was able to try a couple of flavors before deciding but my interaction with the man was not pleasant. This place is also CASH only. There is some seating in the back of this place, but it is small and cluttered with old rugs and knick knacks. Some people may like it but I found the back of the store to be a bit cluttered. By basic, I mean I was not able to communicate with the only employee in the shop because he didn't speak any English whatsoever. Many cafes and restaurants in the area have employees who don't speak English, but they are not in positions that necessitate communication with the customer. A lot of places in San Anselmo close early in the evening, even on Saturday nights. We must of walked into San Anselmo Gelato just before closing time after our dinner. All their gelatos were already put away and the only flavors left (per the owner) were the fruity gelatos. I promised my son ice cream after dinner and unfortunately he doesn't eat the fruit gelato. As I passed the word to him, and was about to walk out the store he had a total look of disappointed and was about to cry. The owner must of saw my son's face, he called us over and said he can go to the back and grab us some chocolate Gelato. PERFECT! This avoided a 3 year old meltdown and ended our night with a tasty scoop of chocolate gelato. 4.5 stars..after all that was said and done, the small scoop of gelato was almost $5....a bit steep. A selection of about 15 flavors, this tiny shop offers up friendly service and yummy, if slightly melty, gelato. Unlike this other reviewer (Sammy is it?) I did not notice any food with all the waffle cone smell wafting up my nose. The butter pecan I got in honor of my grandmother was delicious and totally hit the spot. The two coffee varieties that I ended up with a tiny taste of were very good as well. read more
