If someone were to ask me what is my favorite type of food I would have to say it actually is a tie between two: Japanese, and Mexican. So when DoorDash asked me if I wanted to take advantage of a deal and order something with free delivery, I decided to go with Mexican food, and San Jose Mexican restaurant popped up. I am so glad it did I also need say DoorDash was awesome, I paid for the direct express Delivery it was totally worth it. But back to the restaurant. I ordered the cheese dip as an appetizer and the Arroz con Pollo as my main dish. I love the chicken and rice whenever I'm in a a Mexican restaurant it's one of my go to favorites. And of course, no meal would be complete without a queso and chips appetizer Even though this came with DoorDash and was 15 to 20 minutes after it was made, it still tasted wonderful. I had to reheat the queso and the chips to make them taste like I just ordered them at the restaurant but once I did that they were really good. The queso dip had just enough spice in it to make it enjoyable, but not so much to destroyed the taste buds. The chips, although they weren't fresh because of the delivery, I can tell that they make them in the restaurant which I appreciate. Overall I'm very happy with what I received and the way it was presented, although I'm looking forward to going to the restaurant in person now and actually ordering this and getting it straight out of the kitchen because I imagine that will be a five star meal. The service here was above average. We were treated good by our server , Eddy, and he was consistently efficient all night. Our food was really good. The cocktails were strong. Our server was good at his job. He made recommendations that turned out to be good. Our drinks came with small blinking light in one of the ice cubes. It added to the festive vibe of this place. Everyone was pleased with their food. The bad- the place needs a deep cleaning. The restroom was nasty and smells like pee. Not just a faint smell but like a filthy nursing home. The food is just plain awesome and plenty of it. The wait staff is also awesome. We eat here every Friday for lunch and save half if the meal for our dinner that night. I personally could eat lunch there every day of the week. The salsa and chips are awesome served before lunch and the iced tea is also great. We have been enjoying San Jose cuisine fairly regularly for several years. What has changed? My regular order steak quesadilla was the first I've had that had no cheese in it-just a reduced portion of steak. My wife's chimichanga was mostly tortilla and sauce. Too bad. Incomplete takeout orders! Food was cold on the inside. I called to correct the order and the manager asked me to call back with specific menu item number. When I called back they had blocked my phone number so I drove to restaurant. I had to prove to them my phone number was "blocked" from calling, prove my takeout order purchase, and prove the missing item is included on the specific menu number online. We visited this restaurant on a very busy Saturday evening at approximately 5:15pm. The first thing we noticed upon arrival was our inability to read the menu because of the lack of lighting in the main dining room. We were seated at a table with 4 chairs. The chair my wife was seated in was unstable and the legs moved forward and back with minimal seat movement. I decided to pull out my IPhone and use my flashlight feature to read the menu. While perusing the menu, I noticed that they had Molcajete on the menu priced at $29.49. I asked my wife if she was interested in trying this dish because it is a shareable entree very similar to fajitas for 2, except it is served in a cast iron pig serving dish. In the past, we had ordered this dish numerous times in Omaha, NE, and the bowl would always arrive at the table untouchable due to the hot surface and the juices were boiling inside the bowl. The cheese would always be fully melted and gooey delicious. The first thing I noticed when this dish was delivered to the table is that the bowl was not hot, and the juice inside was not boiling. The cheese chunks were setting vertically along the edge of the bowl and they were unmelted. I questioned the waitress when she checked on our table by asking if the cheese chunks were always delivered to the table unmelted? She answered yes, so I then asked what type of cheese is used since it had not melted whatsoever? The answer was that they use feta cheese. I find that quite odd, considering feta is not a Mexican cheese. Feta is frequently used in Mediterranean and Greek dishes. The dish did have the great flavor that I was expecting, just no gooey cheese. The waitress on the other hand, did a very poor job of checking on our table to see if we needed anything during the balance of our meal. When the bill came I asked my wife for the total, but the price was much higher than I expected. When I brought the price discrepancy of the Molcajete to a managers attention, he stated that the price his manager had in the system was the new price, and said the menus hadn't been updated yet. I explained to him that the published price on the menu is the price that should be honored. After three separate conversations with the waitress and 2 managers they finally honored the price printed in the menu. This is not an acceptable way to treat someone that has been a very good customer in the past. In fact, we had frequented this restaurant more than any on our list at one time. This was our first bad experience, but this was totally uncalled for if you understand the rules regarding consumer price protection. If this post allows enough room, I will provide the details. Last but not least, telling a customer that this dish is a lot of food, is not an acceptable response for failing to update your menu's pricing. I feel compelled to report this event to the agency responsible, so they can further validate your compliance. Furthermore, I would like one additional response from the owner as to why I was originally charged $34.99, when the menu states $29.49? Finally, could you also explain why your online ordering system shows a price of $25.99 for this same item? Would you like to hire a former accounting controller on a consulting basis to clean up this mess? Your bathrooms could also use some attention as fluids are often found on the floor, thus raising questions as to whether sanitary conditions exist in the kitchen. In the future, we will be sure not to ask for additional tortillas at $1.50 for 3. In the past, we have never been charged for additional tortillas, lesson learned! Unfortunate no. We've been going here for the past several years, until now. Out and it was hot. Not warm, hot and had been cooked. . The waiter seemed surprised we didn't like hot cooked ceviche. The rest of the entrees were frozen dinner -esque. It's really a shame since we used to brag about this place. It's gone downhill, I'm not sure why. It used to be authentic Mexican cuisine but not anymore. It's too bad because It's really cute on the inside. And the beer, chips and salsa are generally really good. I have to start by saying, I've been a hospitality professional for close to 20 years. Serving & Management. I'm from California & Las Vegas so maybe my standards are too high but here goes. If I could give negative stars, this would be a negative 10. I have given this restaurant 2 different chances and both were horrific. Some of the items we'd ordered are pictured on Yelp by guests past and the food we ordered looked nothing like this. Our first visit with friends we had Empanadas, Enchiladas & Tacos. 4 of us, everyone disliked their food enough never to return. (Empanadas were burnt to a crisp and the oil used was OLD) No server should've brought those out. My husband and I said we'd never go back however our neighbors celebrating an anniversary wanted to go there so for social reasons we decided to give it a 2nd chance. We ordered different items this time. I ordered Fish Tacos which were THEE WORST fish tacos I've ever seen or tasted. I have to say the sauce was the only good part of this dish. The fish they used was a complete joke. Didn't even taste like fish. My husband had a combo with Enchilada, Relleno & Burrito. All items were a pile of goulash. No differentiating. All the same. My husband has a cast iron stomach and I believe he got food poisoning from this dish. He has had screaming intestinal problems for hours. He's Italian and eats peppers, garlic and onions on the regular but he's cussing this restaurant out as I type. Our neighbors who's anniversary we were celebrating ordered Fajitas for 2. Beef, Chicken & Shrimp. I will say there was a ton of food but I wouldn't have eaten it. The beef looked disgusting. Our friends barely touched it. They said it had no flavor and the meat was chewy and grisly. Our server asked if they wanted a box to take the remainder and our friends said no. It's horrible, the worst Fajitas they've ever had. He smiled, nodded his head and left. They were very, very upset but wished not to cause a scene. There are so many negatives in this entire restaurant scenario, I can't believe it. I wish I'd taken photos, shame on me. If that server were properly trained he would've alerted his manager to the unhappiness at his table and done something to rectify the problem. NOTHING was done. I never punish a server for bad food but I will if they don't properly take care of us. He did refill drinks but when a server sees food isn't being eaten, that's a definite time to ask if everyone was all right. We were never asked that. Others tasted the Fajitas to confirm the lack of flavor and meat quality. Everyone was in agreement. We will never patronize this restaurant again. If we have friends that want to eat there, they'll have to go without us because I will strongly urge everyone I know NOT TO EAT HERE. I question everything about this place given the Service Standard to the food poisoning possibilities. I have to add, I grew up in a Hispanic community, I've eaten in a lot of Mexican restaurants and NEVER was the beef in an Enchilada "ground beef" Not even beef tacos were made from Ground beef and at the price of the place, it should've been Carne or Steak. Shame on this entire establishment. Go to Duffers next door. Way better food and we've never gotten sick. read more

I was somewhat disappointed as getting Mexican food in this coastal area is not easy to find . I decided to try it based off the previous reviews which were mixed and now I see why. There are several nice things about the restaurant such as parking , outside seating , nice ambience and adequate staff response. The food is just OK and first impressions are important . If you go to a Mexican restaurant and the chips are not warm it's a sign that the food may not be excellent. I found this to be true as I decided to order something simple since the chips were not warm and the salsa was good. I got shrimp quesadilla with salad and it was pretty good. Nice grill on the shrimp and they tasted fresh. The Quac which I had to pay extra was OK, not chunky and while tasted fresh , it did not have that bright fresh made taste . My husbands entree was seafood chimichanga's with an "Alfredo " sauce with rice and beans. It was not good all around. The beans were a real light brown color and kinda watery , he really struggled and was not able to eat it all. The sauce was not good and he said the seafood inside was good but nothing else about the dish was appealing . The service was adequate and the place was fairly clean. The cheese enchilada was a gooey flour tortilla filled with queso sauce and topped with queso sauce. Enchiladas are made with corn tortillas and have some flavor other than Velveeta. The potato burrito had the same gummy tortilla and the potatoes seemed to just be boiled? The mushroom quesadilla was the only thing with any flavor, but it was so gummy and full of that 'queso'... The street corn did not have tajin as stated on the menu and was just a corn on the cob with mayo. This is probably fine for the residents of Shallotte, but if you have a palate, steer clear. read more
