We visit this place once or twice a month. Several months ago we purchased a jumbo meal where we got an XL potato salad. XL rice and XL beans. When we got to our destination and prepared to eat we found that the potato salad was spoiled. We trashed it and had our meal without it. Just today I went and got the Mini meal. When I got go home, again the potato salad was spoiled. Any reputable restaurants normally would and should check their prepared foods to make sure they are not spoiled. The only time they would not need to do this is if the product is made fresh daily. Obviously theirs is not. I was pretty upset and so I called the restaurant. All they said was oh. Then for me to return the potato salad and they'll exchange it. I didn't get any sense of concern from the person who I was speaking with. I can't help but question the freshness of their foods. It's always hot inside the restaurant. They always have half baked chicken in the rotisserie, with the rotisserie sitting idle. The kitchen look very unsanitary. This was my second time visiting San Juan Pollo after being recommended by a loved one. My first visit was great--the chicken was delicious, and the staff member at the counter was courteous and polite. That positive experience is what brought me back for a return visit. Unfortunately, this second time was extremely disappointing. I dealt with the same person as before and placed a very simple order: a whole chicken, cut in half and packed in two separate boxes, along with a small side of potato salad. I made sure to repeat my request multiple times to avoid confusion. The menu lists a whole chicken at $15.99 and the side at $2.50--so I was expecting my total to be around $18.50 with tax. However, I was charged $35. When I questioned it, the employee claimed I had ordered a whole chicken and a half, which I had not. After some back-and-forth, he removed the extra half chicken, but the revised total still came to $25. When I asked why it was still over $20, he casually mentioned it was extra for cutting the chicken and using an additional box--something that was never disclosed up front. Apparently, there's a hidden $5 charge just for splitting the order. This was never communicated until after I brought it up, which feels extremely shady and deceptive. Whether times are tough or not which he brought up, adding unannounced charges and hoping the customer won't notice is not ethical business practice. I paid the total (including the $5 hidden fee), but I made it clear that I would not be returning. It's sad that they'd rather try to sneak in a few extra dollars than retain a loyal customer. To future customers: double-check your receipt and be very clear about your order. Ask about any "extra" charges up front. This experience turned what could've been a go-to spot into a hard pass. I finally got around to try this place after years of passing it by. What more to say but really good chicken, perfectly cooked, same style and similar flavor to Juan Pollo. Grabbed a whole chicken to go. They give you a bag of tortillas, a pack of pico de gallo, and holy smokes, a pack of dark red chile salsa that will burn a hole through you. In English, San Juan Pollo means Saint John's Chicken. But to the throng of seven customers waiting patiently to place their orders at 6:48pm on a TUE evening and the hundreds of foodies who award this establishment its stellar 4.6 Star YELP score, we loudly proclaim "San Juan Pollo (S)ain't Juan Pollo or Pollo Loco!!" Last night was my first ever visit. Owners Gustavo and Elizabeth Pineda ingratiated themselves to me with their cheerful demeanor and welcoming smile, even though I was their final customer of the day and I'm sure both were depleted. The quality of their rotisserie chicken is nonpareil, simply superlative. The skin is the color of toasted apricot, moist and succulent flesh and that indescribably yummy flavor that is vaguely reminiscent of vintage Juan Pollo. I say "vintage" because any fan of rotisserie chicken will tell you that Juan Pollo has slipped a step or two over the past fifteen yrs since their heyday. The potato salad warrants a "B-minus." As presently composed, it comes off a bit dry and underseasoned. Mind you, I'm a proud Irishman and consider myself an authority on world class potato salad. I had purchased San Juan Pollo's Extra Large container for $9.29 so, determined to salvage it, I dumped it into a large bowl and fixed it by adding a heaping TBSP of Best Foods Mayonnaise, one tsp of apple cider vinegar, one tsp each of salt, black pepper and paprika then whisked it all together. I strongly suggest the Pinedas contemplate retooling their potato salad w/ my humbly suggested ingredients. The salsas are first rate. The mild salsa features freshly slivered tomatoes, onions, cilantro and (seedless) jalapeños. It's hotter cousin is also excellent. My wife is from Michoacan, Mexico and prides herself on her fluency and capacity for deeply spicy peppers + salsas. While I could scarcely SMELL Mrs. Pineda's spicy salsa without tears, Leti actually called me from work to rave about both the chicken and the peppery salsa! The resulting potato salad is much better seasoned, stick-to-the-ribs tasty and a less dry, more creamy/larded mouthfeel. The restaurant itself is small but cozy, and the owners keep it sparkling clean. While I'd normally deduct at least half a point for the less than ideal potato salad, I found myself adding it right back after I was so impressed by the warmth and friendliness extended to me by Gustavo + Elizabeth. I urge all fans of rotisserie chicken to run, don't walk, to San Juan Pollo! You'll concur with me, that this food is, indeed, "Juan in a million." read more
