Went to Port Arkansas for the beach not realizing there was no food options there- even on a busy Memorial Day holiday. We were going to ferry back for food when I looked up tacos and San Juan was first to pop up. We are so glad it did!!! The chips and salsa was amazing (we even got more to go!!) I had the Jim Bo, my step daughter had the chicken torta, husband had the #25 NY strip special & mom had the chicken poblano. Everything was excellent! Recently made an amateur mistake and walked into on "Cinco de Mayo" in the evening with the intent to order two meals to go. I was "as always" warmly greeted and immediately able to place my order with Ms. Sylvia afterwards directed to a table for one to await. My order was quick to appear with my order correct. When I placed my order "I did" request some chip's & salsa" as while this immediately appears on your table when you sit, but occasionally not in Togo orders. And I was charged $4.00. I don't quite understand this especially when ordering in your not charged for these and welcomed to take leftovers to go. Woke up with that "I need coffee and taco". Best decision I've made all weekend! I ordered the barbacoa plate and let me tell you, it was everything my half-awake brain needed: tender barbacoa, eggs cooked just right, potatoes, and beans all hanging out on one plate like they've been best friends forever. Then came the two fresh flour tortillas--so soft and warm I briefly considered writing them a love letter. For the price, the amount of food was insane. Honestly, I left so full I questioned if I should've scheduled a nap right there at the table. Highly recommend-breakfast dreams do come true, and apparently they taste like barbacoa. read more

San Juan serves up big plates of good old Tex-Mex at very reasonable prices. The tortillas are really good, and my favorite dish is the carne guisada plate. The owner is charming and clearly takes pride in the place, always keeping a close eye on things to make sure everything is going well. The waitstaff is great too, friendly and attentive without hovering. They're conveniently located near the ferry with accessible parking, and they even have a drive-thru for call-in orders. We often pick up the big breakfast with pancakes, and it's incredibly convenient. Great food, great service, and a place we happily keep coming back to. read more

VARIETY AND OPTIONS! We are visiting for a little vacation and we're craving Mexican food. San Juan did not disappoint! As we came around the curve we could see the horse on top of the building and then noticed the entire parking lot was full, a very good sign at lunch time on a Tuesday! The lunch menu was multiple pages, and I made the mistake of looking at every one of the dishes, I struggled to decided lol, I got the Spinach enchiladas (number 6 iirc) and they were so good! Fresh spinach with diced vegetables sprinkled in and topped with a creamy, cheesy white sauce, hubs got the Mexican plate, number 4, and it too was fresh an delicious, he liked the sauce, not a traditional chili con carne, very tasty, and full of flavor. Their salad and chips were above average, fresh cooked in house, and I had to keep my hands on my lap so I wouldn't stuff myself on them before my food came out. I love the ambiance, the furniture is gorgeous, the chairs were hand crafted in Mexico and not a detail was missed. The staff was very friendly and attentive, our waitress was warm and welcoming, the food runner met us with a smile, and I presume an owner or manager also stopped by to help clear our table, and bring me a box, my eyes are always bigger than my stomach lol, he also was making his way outside as we left and we had a lovely conversation. The only thing I regret is I somehow forgot to take pictures, I actually thought I did, but they're no where to be found. San Juan is now a must when we visit Port A each year, the food was fresh, and also the price was a nice surprise, they have a nice bar, so it's the perfect spot for a date or get together, and there's a nature preserve right behind the building, oh one handy option is they have a drive up window so if you're heading to the beach it's perfect to grab and go! read more

Never looking for Mexican food when in Port Aransas prior,I was open to it today. 4 star average with hundreds of reviews,I deemed it safe to test the waters. Always welcome is the seat yourself which is reiterated with any San Juan Employee walking by. Great start. As soon as we sat down the friendly waitress showed up and gave us the menu composed of enough selections for you to pick your top three, changing your mind over and over until the waitress returns and you unexpectedly spit out your third choice. Come on,you know you do that. All in all we enjoyed the food. I'm glad I was in the mood and gave it a try. Next trip I'll give the Mexican breakfast a spin. We came here after leaving the beach, extremely hungry and hoping for a good meal. We searched for something nearby and found this place called San Juan, but unfortunately, it was a very disappointing experience. As soon as we walked in, the first thing I noticed was a staff member on her phone. When I asked where we could sit, I was told to sit anywhere. The place itself didn't look bad, but the service was terrible from the start. The waitress didn't greet us at all--no "hello," no "welcome," nothing. She just came up and said, "What do you want to drink?" in a very rude and careless tone. After we gave our drink order, she walked away without asking if we needed anything else. When she brought the drinks, she didn't even offer my husband a glass with ice for his Coke, which is basic service. Again, she just dropped them off and left. When she came back, she bluntly asked, "Are you ready?" with no friendliness at all. We ordered a mixed fajita, but what really shocked us was when she brought the food--her long nails were literally inside the plate. That was extremely unhygienic and honestly disgusting. As for the food, it had no flavor at all. Everything tasted bland and poorly made. The rice was dry and hard. The only decent thing on the plate was the avocado. Overall, this was a horrible experience. The service was rude and unprofessional, and the food was just as bad. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Service was great but the food left much to be desired. I got a burrito and it was half fat chunks and half beef with lettuce and 2 slices of tomato. That is not a burrito. Burrito should have beans rice as well. I sent my burrito back to fix the meat fat ratio but when she brought it back it was the same undercooked beef. I know it was undercooked cause my brother got the beef nachos and his fajita was dark and crispy it looked way way better than the meat in my burrito. Not good at all. If the dirty washrooms or unprofessional Word 95 menu doesn't scare you off, then the three-minute (!) wait for your food, or the "sour cream" that comes in a bulk-purchase Lunchables squeeze-pak, or the fact that the low-quality meat is blubbery and unseasoned, or the "guacamole" made mostly from onions and tomatoes to save on avocado, should. When a restaurant refuses to do the bare minimum to hold the bottom line, one can only imagine -- wincing -- what the health inspector sees on surprise visit. Stay away. read more

Attentive, but not intrusive... thank you Sally! Chips and salsa, good as always. The extra bottles of red and green salsa are excellent, for those of us who want to little more heat! This visit included tortilla soup ordered by a couple of us, tacos, grilled shrimp and pancake platters for the "littles." All the food was very good, and literally came out 10 minutes after we ordered. Speed of dining is a critical component when dining with young children! LOL Good food, good service, cool place... what's not to like. Recommend San Juan when you're in the mood for Tex-Mex when you're on the island! read more

I have going to San Juan since I can remember. When I say I want breakfast, I mean I want a barbacoa plate! San Juan serves their's up just about as fast as you can say the words, no matter how full the place is. Their dish comes with an egg included (usually an item you have to add on) and of course tortillas on the side. Pair it with a coke and you've got the breakfast of champions, ready to take on a beach day. I can understand reviews that mention it seems a little less than stellar in the cleanliness department, but its old and to be expected, really. My only reason for knocking off a star is that the salsas are not my favorite. Salsa is a huge factor for me in the world of tacos so that was a bit disappointing. Nothing a little pocket salsa can't fix ;) read more

Very busy, and loud. Once again, a big party. This place is fast. Drinks and chips have served. The owner was on the floor, serving and making us laugh. He is a cut up, but very friendly. Staff was hustling. Miss that kinda hustling in a restaurant. We had a party of 15, they couldn't accommodate us inside, but they gave us three tables outside. They took care of us out there, no messing around at this place. The menu is full of good choices, and the drink prices are very good. The corn tortillas are delicious. Food came out really quick, and was tasty. I had the Papi Chulo, came with a lemon cheese sauce. The cheese was great, not lemony at all. The meat is thin strip, on a bed of rice. It was good, but I would have liked it with refried beans. Matt had the Tampico plate, he tore it up. Maria had the nachos, I tried her guacamole, but it needed some seasoning. It was just smashed avocado. Definitely coming back to this place. Parking is plenty full, indoor is kinda tight, but there is outdoor seating. read more

Oh man! This place is probably one of the most underrated restaurants in Port A. While other places had 1-2hr waitlists for dinner time during the 4th of July weekend, the longest we had waited for a table here was 5mins. Food was amazing, servings are huge and it is the most affordable place we dined at during our trip to the coast....and don't get me started on their margaritas and micheladas! I agree, the place needs updating but it is clean otherwise. Service was fast and the people are very friendly. We loved it here so much, we ate here 3X(including takeout) during our stay.
