This clock repair man worked on an antique table clock. It needed a pendulum spring. A pendulum spring is very inexpensive. I was charged $75 for a "custom" spring. This is just plain grossly overcharging me. There is no such thing as a "custom" pendulum spring because they come in a myriad of different lengths. I took four watches in to have batteries replaced on April 13th, the owner replaced all four batteries but could not get the back on one so he kept it but I paid for all four. I returned on today to pick up the one watch and brought another watch in for battery replacement, I gave him a $20 bill expecting $10 change. He said I never paid for the watch I was picking up. I saw he was not going to budge. I left because being black I did not want to argue and get heated, the police would be called and I would be another statistic! I recently came to need the services of a watchmaker to regulate a new (to me) Seiko that I acquired. I noticed the Clock Shop has a Seiko poster in the window, but entered with hesitation. This is, after all, a clock shop. The fellow at the counter seemed busy tinkering with a clock, and seemed reluctant to acknowledge my presence. After what seemed like several minutes, he tended to my needs, but was incredibly rude and short. I should have taken this to be a clue not to trust his with my 62 MAS reissue, despite him being certain he could do that work. Watch regulation on a Seiko movement is not all that difficult after all. After about a weeks wait, I got the call for pickup. My watch was running +/- 6 seconds per day, which is great, except there were garish scratches on my caseback. This is not a difficult caseback to open, yet, there they were. Awful customer service, non-competitive prices and shoddy work are all the reasons you need to stay away from this business. read more

This place is easy to miss if you're not really paying attention when you drive by, but it's a great business that has helped me out a few times in the past. The interior of the place is filled with grandfather clocks, table top clocks, and wall clocks from floor to ceiling; it's completely quiet except for the sounds of ticking seconds hands, swinging pendulums, and the occasional cuckoo clock or soft bells. The man who owns the shop is really friendly and clearly an expert in what he does. I haven't had him do any serious repairs on any watches or clocks, but he has replaced numerous batteries on watches I own, and he does it right there in front of you and it literally takes minutes. I believe it's about 7 or 8 bucks to have him replace your watch batteries, which I can't say is the cheapest price but doesn't feel like extortion. I've never had any issues with his work so I'll continue being a patron. read more

I had bought a beautiful old Seiko clock from eBay a few years ago. It was really lovely and I had gotten many compliments on it from visitors to my home. I was thus pretty devastated when it died suddenly. I took it to a couple of different clock shops, and they assured me that there was no way the clock could be repaired. However, a friend of mine suggested that I try my luck at the San Leandro Clock Shop. As happened at the other shops, the owner Chris said that the clock could not be repaired. However, as it turned out, he had another old Seiko clock in his shop from the same period and was able to swap out the mechanism for me! I also had an old wind-up clock from my father that had died. The clock had actually stopped running many years ago, but I was reluctant to toss it out because it was of a really unique shape and had great sentimental value. Same sort of story: I had visited quite a large number of clock repair shops and had been told that the clock could not be repaired. However, Chris fixed the clock! Chris has a fast turn-around time for repairs and is extremely honest. If he doesn't think he can fix your clock, he will not mince words. Also, the first time I was at the store, when I offered to pay him when I dropped off the clock for repair, he not only refused the payment but actually gave me a lecture on how you should never pay any service person for their work before they have completed the job! read more

I looked in the yellow pages, and found S.L. clock shop. When I brought the clock in, the man behind the counter was nice enough to stop what he was working on and looked at it, it took him only about 10 minutes to fix the problem, and get the old hands to fit. I took the clock home, and it works. It's nice in this day and age, to find a craftsman that works with the old values, helping people first, and then worrying about payment. I have a really cool clock that looks like one of Salvador Dali's melting clock paintings. The owner of the shop told me it's probably a collector's item and now worth at least twice what I paid for it. It's definitely irreplaceable. Recently the mechanism broke and it would start and stop at random times, and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to keep using it. Brought in an old Alaron chime wall clock. The gentleman who owns the place told me that they are dificult to fix and quoted me 150. He informed me that as far as value the clock is not worth repairing. At this point I knew I was dealing with an ethical person./business. The clock has sentimental value so we went ahead with the repair. When I brought the clock home it did not work properly so I brought it back and he did some further repair. I'm a carpenter/handyman so I know not evey repair goes perfectly for anyone It's backing up your work that separates the good ones from the bad. In the end I know he spent more time and replaced more parts than the quote covered but stuck to the price. He was also able to replace the battery in a Swiss (Tudor) watch I own. I have had a lot of trouble finding a place that can replace the battery on this watch. It typically takes a jeweler with a specific tool. This is a reputable business run by a guy who is fair and knows his stuff. He's not the most outgoing guy so don't expect tons of greetings but he will spend time with you and communicate extremely well. This is all I care about. He also sells clocks and has a great selection to choose from. if I'm ever looking for a new clock I will definitley go here 1st as I know he will stand behind my purchase. read more

Here's my brief interaction and impression of the San Leandro Clock Shop (SLCS). I called them and asked if the person who answered had time to "speak for a minute or two." I was told brusquely, that he was, "In the middle of something." Feeling rushed I asked my question, whether he had old parts or material (which I would offer to purchase) relating to a certain type of vintage watch. He answered, saying that he worked on these types of watches, so he would not have anything to sell. Question answered, conversation over, and apparently in a rush to ditch a prospective future customer, he didn't take the glaring opportunity to sell his wares or service. I awkwardly hung up, pondering why once again how someone in the retail or service industry could have such terrible phone manners, and lack of salesmanship. Now, lest anyone think I don't understand the woes of a one man shop (I'm presuming his is), where time on the phone means time away from the bench repairing, I'm fully aware of it. There's still NO excuse for it. Get an assistant with manners to answer, take a message, get back to them later when you can. If you run a specialized business / service, have a website and ask customers to leave emails that you can answer later, etc, etc. There are methods of getting around this. What there's no excuse for, is grumpy, talented repairmen who think that they're the only game in town. Based upon a 1 minute phone call with the this business, I'm ready to take any and all business elsewhere. I'm a reasonable person though, so I'd be interested in hearing a response from SLCS. read more

Update to add that the one day I was able to catch the guy there, he was reluctantly helpful. He was locking up as I got out of my car right out front, but since all I wanted to do was wind a clock to see if it worked, he let me in. (He also assured me that it was a piece of junk and wouldn't work.) He found the appropriate key and wound the clock and lo and behold, it started ticking. I took two vintage watches to this Gentleman to get a quote for repairs. First of all he can clean and repair manual watches. Second, he took them apart and gave me a quote to repair one of the watches and he told me the other one was fine! Yay me! Third. He did not charge me for the quote so I'm definitely taking my watch back there to get repaired when the time is right. Also, I asked how much it would cost to get a battery replaced on some other watches and that is only $8. Wow! Great deal. This guy is really great! I have a 250 tall clock so bringing it in for adjustments is rather difficult. Chris comes by my house and makes the tiniest change and and it runs like a dream. I had an old clock from the '20s that I took to a competitor in Lafayette. He had it for over two years and did nothing to clean or make it run or anything. I took in a 35 year old mantle clock to be repaired. Owner rebuilt it and it has not run accurately since. I have returned twice to have him fix it only to be told that it is working fine, even after he has kept it for a couple of weeks. It should run 7 days on a wind, it only runs maybe two and even that is not accurately as it is slow. The last time, the minute hand fell off and the chimes are not synchronized with the time. Up until it was broken the clock has run perfectly. I am not one to write negative reviews but I feel that I gave the owner enough chances to make this right and he wasn't even very nice about it!! read more

I had my battery changed at this location, and the man seemed okay. Within 6 weeks the watch had started slowubf siqb. I took it back and he said it was my watch, not his defective battery. He was defensive, rude, and had no interest in solving the problem. I have a very sturdy Casio which I've had for a while. In the past replaced batteries lasted a long time, but this fellow must have put in an inferior battery. Having to go back was bad enough, but then finding that he wouldn't stand by his work was a time and money waster. He didn't insult my watch when I paid him to replace the battery, but chose that as his out when his battery failed. I can't say I'd trust this shop. read more
