My husband had a mission to have his shrimp burrito from here. He had them here in the past, but it had been awhile. So today was the day to take care of that craving. I selected the 3 rolled tacos with just cheese on top. I ordered the Jarrett's Guava drink. Hubby was quite disappointed with his selection. It had too much sauce that it over powered the flavors from all of the other ingredients. He had opened up the burrito so that he could evenly distribute the sauce with the other ingredients. My tacos had good flavor. The meat a little on the dry side, but then again I didn't have all the toppings. I just got a little of the sauces at the condiment bar and dipped the tacos in. The bottled guava drink was good, not too sweet. We came in a bit after 7pm so. As we were finishing up our food they started mopping the floors. So the place is very clean. Plenty of seating indoor with a few tables outside. The AC was working very well, that on this rainy day, my husband actually went to retrieve his jacket. I would come back and try some other things on the menu. This location is off a busy street and business park so it does get quite busy at times. I've had burritos in SD, Ventura and the central coast...these have been my favorite by far. They're massive, a great price and taste phenomenal. I've been 4 times now and the consistency is there. Ive heard this location has a contender for SoCals Best California Burrito. So naturally, I stopped by for a breakfast burrito. It was quite busy with takeout orders so I suggest placing an order in advance to avoid a unnecessary wait. The Chorizo Breakfast Burrito was mediocre with no distinguishing ingredients. They charge extra for cheese so I skipped it hoping the eggs, chorizo and burrito would suffice. She used to live in San Diego and wanted that perfect hole in the wall sort of Mexican food with an amazing salsa bar. San Luis Mexican Food checked all the boxes! Despite being a busy Sunday afternoon, our food arrived quickly. We grabbed a seat at the outdoor picnic table. The Carne Asada burrito was the size of a newborn! We barely made a dent in it, and it was so great to have the leftovers the next day. Notably, the tortilla was amazing. It was the perfect texture, size, crispiness, and chewiness. I'm so glad I finally tried this place! I always pass by on the way home from Carlsbad or Oceanside and I was always curious why this Mexican food place was located around a business plaza. We decided to order the Surf & Turf California burrito to share and 2 potato tacos. On Monday's, it's $2.99/taco which was pretty good for happy hour specials! The inside was clean and small. Serviced pretty quickly and the lady at the register offered to get our salsas for us. While we waited for our food, we just decided to grab our own sauces so that we could try them all. There were about 6 different salsa combinations: 2 mild red salsas, 2 green verde salsas I assume that were medium, and 2 orange salsas which were the spiciest. We got the food fairly quick and the burrito was just... impressive! The photos don't do it justice but it was like double the width and slightly longer than my forearm. I was happy that they actually cut the burrito in half already for you which was a plus. Potato tacos were great :) very crispy, fresh and lots of cotija cheese and lettuce. The burrito was phenomenal! The white sauce was delicious and everything inside like the shrimp & steak were cooked really well. I probably saved myself leftovers for 2 days with this burrito. I have always come to this restaurant because they consistently serve excellent food. However, I was very disappointed with my experience today. When I received my order, it was missing the guacamole and sour cream. I had also asked for no cheese, but instead it seemed like my request wasn't followed properly. I waited for assistance after mentioning the issue, but no one brought the missing items. This was very upsetting because I've always had such good experiences here before. I was sure I was lost even when Google Maps cheerfully informed me I had arrived. It's located on the edge of a business park and yes, I had arrived. Don't complain about the prices. Yes, some of the burritos cost around $14 each, or even a little more, depending on which one you get. But these burritos are giant beasts, weighing nearly two pounds each (yes, I weighed them). They can and should be eaten over two meals which brings the price down to about $7 per burrito. And that's not bad at all. We tried a California burrito which was flavorful and a Surf and Turf burrito was also had decent flavor, mainly from the shrimp. Both burritos had carne asada that was tender but mostly unseasoned. There was also very little filler in the burritos, which was nice. Were the burritos the most flavorful ever? No. But the value was there and I would try something more exotic next time. There were a lot of Spanish-speaking folks here and that means someone in the kitchen is doing something right. The serve-yourself salsa bar was on point. Some of the sauces were mild and some were as fiery as Hell. Good luck to you figuring out which is which. The bar also had beautiful pickled carrots. Stupidly, I forgot to take any pictures. A few things I love about SL is that their burrito's haven't gotten smaller and their prices haven't gotten crazy like most places. Their carne asada is still top notch and their sauces are still nicely varied and flavorful, but what blows my mind is that it's actually called "EL" San Luis. Years I've been coming here, years, years, over a decade. I was so happy when they re did the outside and cut down that tree that was blocking their signage, but "EL". I had no idea, haha. Either the name is wrong or the signage is. Neither matters I still love the place. Service is still quick, still friendly, still a neighborhood spot catty corner to other great places like Mr. Pho, Sushi 4 Reel, Thai Garden all also beloved by me and my family. which makes dinner easy when everyone wants a different place. To me it's very different than Mi Asador, different vibe, different menu/specialty, you can't really compare them that they are both Mexican food. My go to here the Carne Asada burrito, no pico. it's the true test of any spot. No frills, no sauce, no hiding behind sides. The tortilla's never break, large enough for full coverage. I steer clear of their California burrito because while crispy fries are great for the Carne Asada fries, the fluff needs to come thru more and they tend to fry them a tad crispy which can poke through the burrito and it. My overall favorite is the carne asada chips which solves both problems, even reheat. just turns it into chilaquiles the next morning. read more

Absolutely delicious Mexican Food! This is my new "go-to" Mexican Food Restaurant in North County. It is located in an industrial park, across from a major strip mall. We pulled into the parking lot and the front of the business does not look like a restaurant. We walked in and the place is very clean, well lighted, nicely decorated, and inviting. There is bar height seating facing out of the windows, a TV for customers, 2 tables for 4, about 4-5 tables for 2, an ordering counter, a salsa & hot carrots/peppers bar, and an order pickup counter. We were greeted by a woman who was very customer service oriented. We placed our orders: 1 Carne Asada Plate, 1 Potato Tacos (2) Plate, and 2 Mexican Cokes (in the tall bottles with real cane sugar). We found a great table for two near the pickup counter. Our food was ready in about 10-15 minutes. The plates were very appealing and the portions were awesome. Everything was cooked perfectly. The guacamole was on point, and the Carne Asada was one of the best that I have had in San Diego County. We will surely come here more often. It is worth the drive and price, for sure. read more

Long term customer who is highly disappointed and will not return. The Carne Asada was poor quality with zero taste, the side order of guacamole was runny and overpriced, an extra $6.99 cost! No chunks of avocado, it was more like avocado sauce. I honestly could only eat a few bites based upon this! It is nice to get a large burrito, but this low grade of meat is questionable! My husband also agreed and did not eat this either. It appears what was once a great burrito restaurant, has opted to prepare cheap steak! I want to St. Louis Mexican food today I bought a Carna Asada quesadilla and a Carne Asada burrito with cheese and sour cream. I am up in the air about the proper rating for this establishment first and foremost. The quesadilla was amazing. Meat was done right taste great and was actually still juicy. However, the Car Asada burrito came out a great portion size. However, the Carne in the burrito was dry. Could this be that I got the last of one batch and then the first of a new batch I'm not sure so I am up in the air for that. With the reason I gave them three stars was just that I would've easily rated this place for maybe low fives because their salsa was watering and didn't have anybody, but it did have flavor. However salsa is not just preheat for those who truly know how to appreciate the food. It's a condiment it should have somebody to it and it should be amazing which is why I am 50-50 on this house where it to be that to be in the burrito was equally as juicy as the one in the quesadilla and this also was a bit thicker. I would've gladly gave this place a five star rating. Will I go back? Yes it was Service with a smile and that's a big part of what we ask however, I feel as for this review it's lacking consistency so I will go back and order the burrito again in hopes that I can change this to higher review. I don't foresee it going higher than a four star review for me because the officers are on the Water side which means they are making salsa watering it down to try and get more and trying to keep the flavor. First time trying this place. Ordered the carne asada nachos and california burrito. Carne asada nachos 9/10: Loved it. Tasted great, better nachos than any other place I have tried nearby. California burrito: 7/10: Pretty big size so good bang for your buck. However, the proportions were a bit off inside. I thought it had too many french fries inside for my liking and not enough meat. The steak tasted pretty good, but the amount of french fries messed with the texture and made the burrito slightly bland. Overall pretty good will definitely get nachos again and look forward to trying other things on the menu. read more
