The kitchen is very inconsistent. I like the burrito with no sour cream. It's 50/50 on the sour cream. Sometimes it comes with beans, rice and the little salad. Sometimes it comes with just a few chips. I've tried to find a way to fix this and they tried to charge me an extra $5. Still working on that. read more

San Marcos is my local spot for a quick, tasty, and high-value meal. Since I live right down the street, it is a convenient walk, bike, or drive. As a native Texan, one thing I love about this restaurant is how reminiscent it is of some of the shops I grew up going to for meals. The decor and environment is very simple... just the way it should be. ;-) Chips, served with spicy and mild salsa varieties are always served when you sit down. The menu has a number of options, no matter what you're craving. The $1.50 tacos are impossible to beat, value-wise! The service periodically has language barriers, but everyone is gracious, kind, and attentive to getting your food to you. I really have nothing but positive feedback about this place. If you're looking for high-class dining, this is not for you. But, if you are searching for something authentic, with soul, value-sensitive, and tasty... try out San Marcos! read more

San Marcos is in my neighborhood, which already makes it a plus. I forget about this place though and when I do remember, I always enjoy it. Pros: Location - right on Main Street in the Highland Park area. Al Pastor - very flavorful with hints of spicy and sweet Price - very affordable Family owned Authentic Mexican/Central American food Food - all is pretty good. Some dishes better than others. I like the burritos, tacos and nachos. I haven't had anything I've completely disliked. Very friendly staff and they do have someone that speaks English, though my Spanglish is pretty good when it comes to ordering food. Cons - No A/C - I don't eat in, I get takeout. Fine in the fall, winter and even spring, but in the summer? Forget about it. Corn tortillas - Not my favorite. Not bad, just a little dry and too thick for my taste. Someone else probably thinks that's the best. This is just my opinion. Carne Asada - A little tough and not a lot of flavor. Just a note: Burritos - Actually the burritos are good. Their beans are very flavorful and obviously made from scratch. I'm just at a loss as to why I cannot find anywhere in Chattanooga that can make a basic bean & cheese burrito. This is not all San Marcos' fault. The bean burrito I got was actually very good. But they grill them and/or cut them in half. I just want a huge tortilla stuffed with refried beans and some melty cheese. Not Taco Bell kind, but just a simple burrito. I've tried several different places. Again, they grill it and//or cut it in half or add pico de gallo or put red sauce on it. I digress - anyway, San Marcos is a good spot to get some yummy food. read more

We came because of the good reviews and were not disappointed. Guatemalan/mexican food and it was delicious, authentic, and great flavor our Peruvian family loved. The interior could be better lit and the furniture/bathrooms need renovating but I am usually more critical of the food at a family owned restaurant. Would recommend! read more

Hands down the BEST Hispanic food I've had in Chattanooga. It's amazing. If you like "Mexican" food this is the spot.

Wouldn't seat us at 9:30 with another patron in there. Their own sign was still on and they said they are open until 10:00pm.

I love that I can go to San Marcos and use my Spanish while eating delicious food. My favorite thing is something I think they call "plátano relleno" and it's basically a ball of mashed plantains stuffed with beans, and it's just delicious. And the horchata is good too! read more

My husband and I went here for lunch randomly and were pleasantly surprised. The food was amazing. I ordered the Guadalajara chicken and plantains (oddly, the plantains were served with sour cream) and he ordered the nachos. Be warned, the menu is entirely in Spanish and the employees don't speak the best English so we had to google translate the menu to get a feel for what I was looking at . We went during early lunch time so it was pretty empty but by the time we left there was a packed house and even people waiting in the parking lot to come in (parking lot is tiny). We were the only non Hispanics in the place so we got some curious looks but that's it. I deducted one star because it took FOREVER to get our food. I was starving when we went and it took about 30 minutes for it to come out. It was piping hot and fresh, but just don't come here when you're hangry. I will definitely be back though when my stomach isn't gnawing on my back bone. I was so hungry that I forgot to take pics of my food when I first got it, I just dove right in. read more

This restaurant was a hidden gem for me. I'm from Texas and used to actually spicy salsa with legitimately traditional cooking and this place is it! It has spicy salsa, great carne asadas, and fair pricing. I crave it all the time! I can't comment on restaurant seating because I've only gotten food to go. The staff does not speak English entirely so you may want to do your research on the menu beforehand. read more

This place is a hidden gem! The outside may look daunting and the dining room a little shabby but it is well worth it for the food and service. The server was extremely nice and worked with me as I struggled to order my food in Spanish. However, the best part is by far the food. I had two pollo supremos tacos, and needless to say they were amazing. The avocado and vegetables were fresh, the tortillas soft, and the salsa had the perfect amount of heat. The only downside is that it was obvious I was out of place being white. Don't let that stop you because this place's food is amazing!!! I will be coming here as often as I can to get genuine Hispanic food!! read more

San Marcos on E Main St. near S Orchard Knob Ave. is an excellent and authentic hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. It looks quite divey, but I believe that adds to the ambiance of the place. You sort of feel like you drove south of the boarder. The food, the price and service is excellent! read more
