    Tacos al pastor

San Marcos is in my neighborhood, which already makes it a plus. I forget about this place though and when I do remember, I always enjoy it. Pros: Location - right on Main Street in the Highland Park area. Al Pastor - very flavorful with hints of spicy and sweet Price - very affordable Family owned Authentic Mexican/Central American food Food - all is pretty good. Some dishes better than others. I like the burritos, tacos and nachos. I haven't had anything I've completely disliked. Very friendly staff and they do have someone that speaks English, though my Spanglish is pretty good when it comes to ordering food. Cons - No A/C - I don't eat in, I get takeout. Fine in the fall, winter and even spring, but in the summer? Forget about it. Corn tortillas - Not my favorite. Not bad, just a little dry and too thick for my taste. Someone else probably thinks that's the best. This is just my opinion. Carne Asada - A little tough and not a lot of flavor. Just a note: Burritos - Actually the burritos are good. Their beans are very flavorful and obviously made from scratch. I'm just at a loss as to why I cannot find anywhere in Chattanooga that can make a basic bean & cheese burrito. This is not all San Marcos' fault. The bean burrito I got was actually very good. But they grill them and/or cut them in half. I just want a huge tortilla stuffed with refried beans and some melty cheese. Not Taco Bell kind, but just a simple burrito. I've tried several different places. Again, they grill it and//or cut it in half or add pico de gallo or put red sauce on it. I digress - anyway, San Marcos is a good spot to get some yummy food.

San Marcos is a wonderful restaurant that serves home made Guatemalan and Mexican food. They use fresh ingredients and all their tortillas are hand made so you know the food is fresh! They used to be a cash only restaurant but they are accepting cards now which is great. This is one of my favorite places in Chattanooga and I highly recommend it

We came because of the good reviews and were not disappointed. Guatemalan/mexican food and it was delicious, authentic, and great flavor our Peruvian family loved. The interior could be better lit and the furniture/bathrooms need renovating but I am usually more critical of the food at a family owned restaurant. Would recommend!

Hands down the BEST Hispanic food I've had in Chattanooga. It's amazing. If you like "Mexican" food this is the spot.

Wouldn't seat us at 9:30 with another patron in there. Their own sign was still on and they said they are open until 10:00pm.

Tonight I ordered a dish that was unacceptable in that when I cut into my shrimp, chimichanga, water poured out or something similar to the consistency. It was disgusting, so I sent it back. The manager explained that this was better or oil. Lol. I cook with both of the above very often. It was not. I think that it was frozen shrimp inside the tortilla. My dish was steaming, and was very hot when it was served, which lend me to believe that it was in the microwave. My next order was the fajitas. I ordered shrimp, chicken and steak. Not one time did my waiter replace my chips, nor act as though I was an important guest. It was one of the worst experiences that I have had in some time. My bill was exorbitant because I ordered margaritas along with my food. I will never be back. I ordered margaritas, because I chose to drink instead of eat since the food was so bad. This place is one step above Taco Bell in my opinion. In addition, I left a very nice cash tip. This was not due to the fact that the service was great, it was because I felt guilty for sending back my first order.

We had our two young girls and they were very understanding and accommodating (high chair and coloring sheets). The menu is interesting but to be honest, we enjoyed almost none of our items. The cocktails were very meh. Not awful but not great. The food is really where this place lacks in my opinion. No one was a fan of almost any dish we got. The puffy tacos with redfish were likely the worst. Under seasoned and close to being gross. The catfish dish was so so. The fish itself was good but the grits were hard and the green tomatoes were so sour that they overpowered everything else. The ribs tried but I'd suggest going to a legit BBQ joint for real meats like this. The potatoes were greasy and mostly bland. I'd rank this our least favorite meal in the city. Interestingly enough. We were just at a Michelin star restaurant less than a week before and had the complete opposite experience.

Upon arrival, a friendly host found us comfortable booth seating behind the bar. The waitress not only answered our food allergy related questions pertaining to certain dish prep but the manager came over to our table to assure us that she would be double checking our order to make sure there was no allergen cross contamination. Such a kind, thoughtful gesture! Mom and I ordered the sampler to split - a huge tray filed with delish gluten free chips, a delish bowl salsa verde, a delish bowl of homemade guacamole, and a delish bowl of homemade cheese sauce. For my lunch, I got two of my favorite tacos on their menu still, the California Club ones, large tacos filled with roasted chicken, a tasty like crema, and avocado. Not as hungry as I, Mom got an Oy Vey Taco, another longstanding goodie, a brisket based taco, which she enjoyed. Our later than planned Wednesday lunch was perfect.

It took a while for a server to see us, but then it was fast to get our drinks as well as food once orders were placed. Tacos were alright, Cali club was messy & drippy. Homeboy was good but I don't think I'd get the spicy version again - not overly spice just overly sauced. The appetizer trio was good, but seemed expensive at $14. Overall the place is nice, but a little expensive for tacos.
