It's taco week in Chattanooga! This was the perfect chance to try some Mexican food spots we haven't been to yet. So my partner and I ordered the featured taco, the sloppy taco. Mine chicken and his steak. Mine was so hot that I couldn't eat more than half of it. The cheese sauce was way too spicy...and I like spicy food. My partner said his taco was a two out of ten. What a shame. The salsa was a two out of ten also. The service was excellent. Fast and friendly. The interior is okay. Nothing special. read more

I don't know why it took us so long to finally try Amigos, but I'm excited to keep coming back! This place gets busy on the weekends - my husband and I had to wait for about 15 minutes for a seat on a Friday night. Once we were seated though, service was super quick! Chips & salsa were served immediately - I love their chips! Salsa tasted like it could have been out of a Pace jar, but I liked it nonetheless. Their happy hour goes til 8 PM, so of course I had to get a marg, which was on the sweeter side. For food, I got the Burrito Trigo w/ steak and it was delicious! I was very hopeful that this place was going to be good. The chips were not warm with the salsa. Salsa was mediocre not a lot of flavor. They did not have a drink menu so I ordered a top shelf. Margarita with salt on the rocks. Tasted more like mellow yellow mix. So at that point, I decided just to order two tacos. And the tacos were lukewarm at best. read more

Got carry out on Sunday and this place SLAPS. The queso is TOP TIER! The food was hot and fresh still when I got home. Highly recommend.

We wanted to like this place... but we didn't. Service was painfully slow even though we were ahead of the lunch hour rush. The complementary corn chips didn't exactly seem fresh. The veggie fajita mix was not what the menu described (which was an important factor due to health reasons), there was no guacamole salad on the dish even though the menu said it was included (waiter said it was not included on the lunch portion). This was not mentioned on the menu. Again, the guac was a specific reason we chose this dish. We'd asked for corn tortillas (because of gluten intolerance) and they brought flour tortillas instead... we had to flag someone down to get that corrected. Few people know, but Chattanooga was founded in the 1700s by a group of Cherokee and Mexican restauranteurs. In Cherokee, the name literally means "land of mediocre Mexican restaurants." Although white settlers shamefully screwed over the Cherokee and no remain, mediocre Mexican restaurants still litter the city. In fact, a new mediocre Mexican restaurant opens almost every week. At one time, Amigo's on Dayton used to stand out as a better than mediocre restaurant. I worked at the Radio Shack next door and would eat at Amigo's several times a week. Having grown up, I found a new career before the Shack folded, but I still managed to grab weekly takeout from Amigos. I tell you all this for context; I know this place. The decor is standard. Restaurant is usually pretty clean. All the old servers are gone, unfortunately, so is the cute and very tall hostess. None of that matters, however, because this is a take out spot for most. I'm not kidding when I say that I have been ordering the pollo picoso and cheese dip for a decade. Recently, we had an order come home without cheese dip. I called and told the young girl on the phone what had happened, but she couldn't really offer any solution. Then an order missing tortillas. Then one without salsa verde. I guess it's on me to make sure all the food I've paid for is present, which I now do. Everyone makes mistakes, but it's now too frequent. Tonight, we brought home the family order and discovered the saddest and smallest order of pollo picoso. It should have come with a picture of little Timmy and his crutch. My wife and I generally split the meal and one of us has plenty left over for one lunch. Tonight, there was not enough pollo to fill two tortillas (it comes with three, although I'm nearly certain it used to come with more). So, here I am, sitting up late and still distraught over my pollito picoso. The food isn't as good, the service has fallen, and the servings are smaller. I keep giving this Amigos a shot, hoping that they improve, but every time I'm disappointed. It's a shame because Amigos is an such an amazing chain, but this one is horrible. The service is consistently atrocious, management should be ashamed to hire such terrible waitstaff. Words cannot describe just how bad they are. Let me start by saying that we ate at the Amigos on Ringgold Road in East Ridge, TN. This place was really really really good. We were so happy to taste mexican food that had a real taste to it. So many places in Atlanta all taste the same. Mainly because they all use the same distributor for their food. Hence it's the same food. This was clearly not that food. The refried beans tasted homemade. Don't know if they were, but if they weren't don't stop using that brand. The portions are so large that we could hardly finish half of our meal. I had the chimichangas and hubby had a build your own of a two burritos and an enchilada. We also ordered 3 extra tacos. Simply delicious. What really had us floored was the size the beers. They were 24 oz at $4.50 a beer. OMG. We could hardly finish them. Needless to say we each only had one. Next time we're up to see my father-in-law, we're taking him here for lunch/dinner. I have eaten at both this Amigo's location and the one on Hwy153. They have the same menu and the same quality of food, but the salsa is different that you get with your chips before your meal. This salsa is fresh and spicy! You can also ask for an even spicier salsa that my family likes, but is way too hot for me! I ordered the Nachos Supreme. It was very good! Right amount of chips to "stuff." I would order it again but maybe get the half size - it was way too big! The portion sizes here are very large so you feel like you get a good value. I like that. I think it's a good place to come by for lunch! Service was great when we visited. Overall, wouldn't be my first choice for mexican. But it is pretty good! read more

The servers are amazing. The last 2out of 3 times I have found black hairs and my food . I told the owner the first time and he acted like it was my fault I found them. It even made one of our regular servers uncomfortable. The other night I found a black hair on the outside of the plate and told the manager. I even told them both time I did not want a discount and was just letting them know so they could fix the issue but instead of wanting to do that they told a customer that has been coming to eat there since they opened not to come back WOW. read more

I'm about to move to Mexico, so I won't pretend this is "authentic" Mexican food, but for Chattanooga it's pretty damn good, I used to go to Taco Mamacita, but it annoys me that they actually make you pay for chip and salsa. That's a minor but telling point. The food here is just as good (if not better), the margaritas are just as good and less expensive, and you won't have to wait 45 minutes to get a table. It's not trendy, but trendy is overrated -- especially when you're hungry! read more

I have been a patron of amigos for many many years , one of mine and my partners go to spots for date night. I found a black hair in my food and notified the staff and nothing was done , not a I'm sorry , nothing. I will more than likely go to the Hixson amigos from now on. Terrible experience. I had to ask for a menu. The front of the menu was covered in dried and not so dried food. Needless to say, the way that I found out was when I grabbed the menu. I ordered the Texas Fajitas. They arrived quickly and the plate was sizzling. The server placed it right in front of me on the edge of the table. I picked up the flimsy napkin that came with my wrapped silverware. I grabbed the handle with the flimsy napkin and burned my thumb and pointing finger on the hand that I grabbed the handle with. Two hours later (at home) my fingers are still on fire (and yes, I put ointment on my fingers right away). Maybe they should have a cloth napkin to grab the handle with? Everything tasted great except for the steak. It tasted gamey. The waitress took off 3 dollars for the steak. Going to be tough working with burned fingers..... read more

I have given Amigo many chances - mostly because it was the only Mexican food establishment close to my old haunts in Chattanooga - but I was continually disappointed. The first time I went, I would have given it 4 stars, but each visit after got progressively worse to the point where I finally decided to stop going. Although you get massive portions for way cheap, the food is bland and greeeeasy, making it more akin to Taco Bell than actual Mexican food. The service is hit-or-miss: either so fast that you think the waiters want you out of the restaurant, or painfully slow. It's always bugged me that the majority of serves are white people while the actual Mexican folks are busing tables and behind the scenes. To end on a positive note, the fried ice cream is decadent! I would not waste my money here. There were only two harried servers in this small restaurant. We waited for a long time at the front door and then waited for a serve to acknowledge us. Food came out fast but the cheese in the enchiladas was not even melted. The other server brought out our food, said hot plate and then scurried away as fast as she could (I needed additional things for my meal). Serve finally came back around with an arm full of dishes and asked if we needed anything. Well, yeah...my drink is empty, we have no salsa, I needed sour cream 10 minutes ago and the enchiladas are cold. I have been a server and bar tender I know what it is like to be in the "weeds" that was not what was happening here. This is an honest review and I am not a difficult customer. This is the best mexican restaurant in Chattanooga, period. This particular location is currently and has historically been the best amigo location. It has the best salsa, most consistent food, and best service. Several of the staff have been at this place since it opened and for good reason. Do yourself a favor if you are near this place and check it out. First time to eat here today. I wasn't expecting that much. What a pleasant surprise. It was very busy at lunch. We were seated promptly as a booth became available. I ordered a #7 lunch special to try a few bites of different things. Server was quick in spite of being very busy. The meal was prompt and hot. It tasted great! It's the best Mexican food I've had from moving here from Houston 8 years ago. It will be a regular stop for us. This little hole in the wall Mexican restaurant is just right when you want cheesy goodness! They have your usuals, but also a few specialties that are intriguing and good. Grilled nachos as well as regular nachos, some chicken dishes you don't normally see (we had the chicken picioso) and "soggy tacos" that were outstanding... their take on a double decker with steak, sprinkled with chorizo, and topped with their suiza sauce PLUS happy hour from 3-9pm every day... can't beat that. read more

When they laid that on me, I asked to speak to the manager but then they were like "uh, he's not here". Passive aggressive or something. This is the mexican restaurant for the masses. My boss asked us to eat there today. It's fast and the order was accurate. Everything was cooked to temperature and I can't say a whole lot about it either way. Just about everything I have had from this franchise, no matter which location, is pretty bland. The salsa on the table is tomato-esque, and the chips are ok. The service was good and the price was right. Just put some hot sauce on it, cause there is little flavor in the dishes. But, I think that's on purpose. Real mexican flavor isn't for the masses. I don't usually choose this franchise. read more
