We were in town and decided to try out Agave & Rye. We all tried out the Epic tacos, which is a crunchy taco inside a flour tortilla. By having this combination you are able to enjoy all the yummy bits of your taco with very little ending up on your plate. I had the Snitch which was cod, slaw, pickled onions and topped with salt and vinegar chips. Personally the chips were a bit much for me, but my husband had the same taco and really enjoyed the combination of flavors. I also had the Island Banger which was a tasty combination of coconut fried shrimp and mango pico. Plus my daughter and I split a margarita which was also very good. Unfortunately the downside of our visit was the service, our waitress was friendly but overwhelmed, we had to ask for extra napkins twice and even had to ask for silverware. The food is very good in this trendy, downtown eatery. Creative Tex-Mex. Be sure to try the side dish Elote - excellent. BUT, our service was abysmal. I can't speak to the other wait staff, but our guy clearly had other things on his mind. Every part of our visit took way longer than it should have. We were done about 30 minutes before we ever managed to get our checks and pay. So, I'd make sure to pay for a couple of hours of parking. I'm going to attribute all that to this particular waiter, and judge the place on its other merits. The person you get might be quick and attentive. All in all, this place wasn't my cup of tea, to be charitable. The decor was pretty over the top. Young adult is obviously their demographic. I'm 65, so take that into account. We ate dinner here after the aquarium and before doing a haunted pub crawl ghost walk tour. They weren't super busy. It was a Friday. They ran out of C02, so we couldn't get soda. We all ordered different tacos. Several of us ordered the fish taco. The fish was cold. In fact I think all the tacos were cold. I don't know tif they were supposed to be or not. This trendy hipster taco restaurant was a fun experience. I'd like to go back when we have more time to fully enjoy it. We were on our way to watch our grandson in a rowing competition. The server was marvelous and went way beyond the call of duty to make sure we got our food and check quickly so we wouldn't be late. Dan and I got a flight of tacos. Our son in law got one, too. Our daughter ordered elote. That's what I'm getting next time along with a taco, of course. Elote literally means "ear of corn." It came with a very nice presentation. Debi let me have a bite and it was delicious, but I mainly like it for the presentation. Our eyes have to eat, too. It came on a cob of corn complete with the stock still on. The corn dip was poured on the ear of the corn cob. The taco flight Dan and I shared was sea food. We got 2 with battered cod and one with shrimp and grits. Both were good. We went there for lunch after the Christmas market today, and it was fair. We got a mixture of their items. One of our group ordered the "Bayou Baddie" - a taco filled with gator tail meat. Their opinion is that it's very mid. I would say that most of the tacos that we had in the group qualify in that area too with a couple of exceptions. The atmosphere is very modern with a musical vibe that is interesting. The service was great, zero complaints there. The true challenge with this place is that they try to be overly interesting with the food to prove that interesting means complex flavors, but where the fail comes is that the best places understand that the quality stands out not the complication! I guess that what I'm saying is that we got a decent meal for a decent price, and their mix 'n match makes possible the opportunity to try different things. But I'm not really going to recommend this place. It's a one and done kind of thing if you want to try it, but it's not ever going to be a go to place for us. read more

The service was ok, but definitely get the ick when a server treats you like they think they know your 'type' but he made up for it. The location's layout and decor followed the traditional of eclectic vibes with bold colors and Dia De Los Muertos inspired art. I am loving the new expanded menu and return of some of my favorites. The restaurant is situated right next to the Aquarium and the riverfront, so very convenient. The decor is eclectic with a steampunk-ish vibe. The wait staff was super helpful. I had the three taco meal with The Rooster, The Sugar Daddy and the Plain Jane. All of my tacos were in fact epic just as the signage on the restaurant entailed. This is our second visit to this business. We originally tried the Kentucky location and it was amazing and expected nothing less from Chattanooga. Service was great everyone was personable and pleasant. As attentive as they could be with such a busy Saturday crowd. We started with two waters and a Strawberry Bombshell, because it was pink. If you like'em strong go for this. Baby I had to have the man finish it for me. It was delicious but a little too strong for me. Now here is where things got tricky, the egg rolls were our favorite in Kentucky. But here they lasted flavor and seasoning. Just a greasy crunch fest. 0/10. The man ordered 3 Plain Jane's and I also did the flight but with 3 different tacos: Bee's Knees,The Gangsta and The Snitch. All delicious but the Gangsta was my favorite. We saw the 70 food inspection score after we sat down: from 3/2/26: "Agave and Rye in Chattanooga received 70. Inspectors found an employee eating in the food preparation area, as well as ready-to-eat food stored near uncovered raw chicken. Food has to be discarded after a surge switch shut off a reach-in cooler. Dented cans of corn were noted by the inspector. The inspector also found packaged shrimp, sirloin and sausage links thawing at room temperature in a sink." The queso was OK but tacos were not very good. It is anyone's guess as what they were. Our server, Ben, was lovely and attentive. My grandmother had the Plain Jane tacos, as she's not adventurous with food, but she enjoyed her tacos. I had the Bourbon Peach Punch and would highly recommend it. I had all of the vegan options; which were just the two. I had the Green Goddess which was shockingly delicious; reading the ingredients of this taco wasn't too appealing, but I figured I'd try it anyway since I was limited to the two options. It was super delicious; I wish I would have ordered three instead of the one. I do enjoy the double shells(one hard, one soft) of the epic tacos. I also ordered the jackfruit and mushroom birria tacos; they were okay. They chose a good brand of vegan cheese because it melts very well and was good. I feel that the birria tacos were lacking in flavor. Maybe they could scratch the corn toppings and drizzle some salsa on top. Overall, I enjoyed my meal and the vibes of the place. I checked out the Yelp reviews and A&R had a great menu! The inside is painted ceilings and all with vibrant colors. Eden was the bar tender that was quite busy still took great care of me. When it came to a drink one of the ingredients in the drink I chose was not available so I let Eden choose the substitute and she hit it out of the park! I will coin the "Eden's Dream" with her permission. I ordered a flight of 3 tacos each with very diverse flavors; The Thumper- Peppercorn kangaroo, Mac n cheese donut, roasted corn, sweet & spicy bacon, green onion, habanero syrup, queso love cushion (flour tortilla and corn tortilla with queso in Z middle) which was the star of the show! Followed by The Happy Pappy, & The Gangsta. Each taco was unique and flavorful. I also ordered fries which tasted great in their chunky gauc with tomatoes & onions. The owner is obviously a huge fan of Prince which is awesome! Love the decor and subtle and not so subtle hints of their fandom throughout the dining room and bar area. I enjoyed Agave & Rye and thanks to Eden for a great conversation & great service. I will add A&R to my Chattanooga collection and I would recommend to anyone staying or visiting the area by the Aquarium and river, for drinks and outstanding tacos in a fun and relaxing atmosphere. The chips and queso were fresh - though personally I would have loved a bit more onion and cilantro in the salsa. The steak egg rolls were yummy- especially liked the bbq dipping sauce. I am pretty sure I can't overstate how great Agave & Rye is. This is the second one I have been to and they always knock if out of the park. The decor is always interesting. It's art based but more modern, so pics of celebrities but done tastefully. I am sure someone smarter than me has the right word for it. The staff is amazing, they are quick and attentive. Nothing was missed and we never really wanted for anything. The food though, it's over the top amazing. I would legit sit in a dumpster with Oscar the Grouch as my waiter and still give the food a beaming review. We started with the mac and cheese beignets. They defy logic. Whatever person was sitting around and said bacon, spicy syrup, and deep fried mac go together, I salute you. Individually they are ok, but when you get that perfect bite of all those flavors, they are dynamite. We had the filthy fajita epic taco and the sugar daddy of the plain Jane epic taco. The flavors on both of these worked together so perfectly. Like the beignets, the perfect bite of all flavors are out of this world. So this spot is a really dope spot to go to if you're in Chattanooga. It's at the end of the street and it runs right into the water. It's not exactly on the water but if you are looking out the window you can clearly see it at the waters right there. It's a beautiful view! The restaurant itself kind of has a front in the back to it so be careful where you go to. I ended up sitting at the bar and had a good time sitting at the bar and talking to the bartender. He talked us through the specials and get a really good margarita out of them. I ended up really enjoying the decor, you can really see how they decorate it and why they decorated it the way they did, because it's very eye-catching so even if it wasn't on the water, I would definitely love to sit there look at the restaurant. The Agave epic margarita was good. It had the right amount of sweet and tang to it. Came in a grown person glass, with a shot on the side. All you really need is one of these and you will be good. There's probably a reason they don't list their menu prices online--paying $8-$9 for a single taco feels excessive, especially when the quality doesn't justify the cost. While the tacos are certainly packed with ingredients, the flavors and execution just don't deliver. Many of the combinations sound interesting on paper, but they fall flat in practice. Across the board, the tacos were surprisingly light on meat. The birria taco, in particular, was a disappointment--the beef was dry, and there was none of the rich, saucy flavor you'd typically expect from birria. It felt like every individual element of the taco was just okay at best--and the hope was that combining them would somehow make it all work. But instead, the result was a messy pile of ingredients that lacked cohesion or standout flavor. Ultimately, it seems like this place leans heavily on over-the-top, gimmicky creations rather than focusing on delivering genuinely good food. I can think of a dozen other American-style taco spots that serve better tacos--three to an order, often with sides--for the same or even less money.
