I've been seeing Angela for acupuncture for over a year now. I'm so grateful she takes my insurance. I always feel amazing. My body relaxes, my mind slows down, and I feel so at ease. Her cupping has been a game changer for my neck and shoulder (I had frozen shoulder) and am very active so I'm often hurting myself one way or another. Angela herself is warm, authentic, and wonderful to chat and laugh with. We love sharing restaurant finds. But what happened this week completely blew my mind! I had horrific calf pain after running stairs with a 20 lb weighted vest two days in a row. I was miserable. I felt like I had calf surgery! While treating my calf, Angela said it felt like the needle was going into a steel plate! I was horrified, thinking what did I do and how long before I heal? The very next morning I woke up... and the pain was gone. I could not believe it. I went to the gym and did leg press and my full leg circuit like nothing had happened. I have been consistently going here for a few months (every 1-2 weeks) and am sorry to post such a negative review, but I feel like a place with a main goal to heal people should embody that philosophy in how they treat customers, but unfortunately have found that not to be the case here. First of all, I want to echo previous reviews that Minal indeed has amazing bedside manners and I have seen her several times and have been treated with nothing but respect and kindness. Unfortunately I can't say the same about the front desk person working on Thursday, Dec 10, 2026 - Alyssa, and to a lesser extent, Angela the owner. Again, like previous reviews of interactions with the front desk, it seems they are incapable of having any empathy for customers. In my case, I was running late for my 4PM appointment and called around 3:30PM (answered by Alyssa) to see what could be done. I was told the policy was strictly a 10min grace period so if I arrived at 4:11PM, I would be charged a $75 late fee. This was very frustrating because I was scheduled to arrive right around 4:10PM, but a simple traffic light could be the difference between arriving at 4:10 or 4:12, but Alyssa firmly stated they wouldn't even make a minute exception even though I had never been late before in any previous appointments. This stressed me out so much so even though I managed to arrive at exactly 4:10 (got lucky with the traffic lights), I was dis-regulated and accidentally slammed the door that was the entrance to the clinic (it is super light, definitely one of those indoor hollow doors). Alyssa glares at me and states there are other patients and I said something to the effect of Oh well I was very stressed out trying to get here on time due to the policy, so sorry and obviously this won't happen again. And she continues glaring and mutters ..crazy... while looking me straight in the eye. And then she's like ugh whatever Minal will talk to you, in a tone straight out of Mean Girls and leads me to the room. A minute later, I come back out asking if I could use the bathroom (not sure if I would be charged the late fee for it so wanted to check) and she glares at me for a solid few seconds, as if in disbelief I dare talk to her again, before begrudgingly saying uh yea whatever... The next day, Angela the owner called me to talk about the incident, so I told her what happened and mentioned Alyssa called me crazy, and she said that she heard from Alyssa that she said "That's crazy...", and not "YOU'RE crazy...". Now my question is does that make a difference? When your front desk receptionist looks a customer in the eye and says CRAZY, does it matter if it was preceded by "you're" or "that's"? It felt like 75% of my call with Angela was her basically saying she didn't know who to believe with the he-said-she-said (then why call me to talk about it) and nitpicking on the details of the name calling. I called her out on it and she apologized and emphasized she does not condone Alyssa's behavior, but it didn't feel sincere due to her previous comments. Philosophically, I hate places that can't make a 1 minute exception as a one-time deal (I get if someone is chronically late that you gotta respect other people's time and pay for it), but I would say if it were only this, I would be giving this place maybe 3 stars for the inflexibility since it is their right and it's just preference but not a crime or anything. But 1 star for Alyssa's behavior and the very confusing defensive call from Angela afterwards. read more

I called this center maybe 3 months prior to my first appointment with a accupuncturist. When I called, the receptionist told me they were booked out for 3 months in advanced. However, since this place was nearby and I read all the positive views on yelp, I really wanted to try this place out. So I gave them my insurance information and waited for my turn. Well the day finally came for my appointment. They did not send me any reminders for that day, but I wrote in my calendar that I had an appointment, however I was unsure if it was at 2:30pm or 2:45pm. So I opted to come a little before 2:30pm in hopes of not missing my appointment. When I arrived I like the receptionist know I was there for an appointment and she said she was very glad I showed up because she said it was her fault for not writing down my number when I booked the appointment way back when. Well thank goodness I wrote it down so I wouldn't forget and was able to see the acupuncturist. There are two acupuncturist at this center (Angela and Minal). I booked my appointment with Minal. She was very sweet and knowledge about the practice. I did an acupuncture with cupping. Cupping was an extra $10 that was not covered with my insurance but I figured it was still a good deal. I have only done acupuncture and cupping once before this experience. Minal said she does this thing called moving cupping. Where she uses the same cups but moves it throughout the whole back. There were a few points where I experienced extra pain from the needles (which she told me was because it was super tense there) and some pain with the heat from the cups. She released a little bit of the energy and then added it back when I was able to tolerate it a bit more. She was very kind and made sure to check in on my throughout the experience. I explained that I have been pretty bad back pain for awhile now since working at my job due to all the bending over and lifting. Even to a point that I bought a back brace. Minal was able to help relieve some of the pain and I can only hope that as I go more frequently it will be more helpful. Overall, I had a great experience with Minal. I will definitely be back for more appointments. It may be intimidating to know that it took me this long to get an appointment, but after you get your initial appointment, it's not as bad to get another appointment in. They have a system that notifies you when someone cancels their appointment so you can pick it up. Also to further convince you, I had the best sleep that night after my treatment so it is def worth it! read more

I've found the practitioners to be knowledgable and pleasant, the rooms comfortable, and parking is easy. The women who work at the front desk are kind and helpful as well. My doctor recommended acupuncture to help with my repetitive strain injury, and I chose San Mateo Acupuncture because of the location and all the glowing reviews. Unfortunately, I had quite a different experience from everyone else here. Minal has a great bedside manner, but I found her technique to be ineffective and extremely painful. Several of the needles hurt like hell. When I told her about this, she tried to push the needles further into my skin, which only exacerbated the pain. She then placed a heat lamp directly over my right arm for 20 minutes. I felt like my skin was burning. Afterward, she rubbed the area with a spoon. As a result, a large red welt appeared on my arm. The welt faded after ~3 days, but my RSI remained--and in fact got even worse. I would definitely NOT recommend this place! I wish I could get a refund, but all the money in the world would not make up for the pain I endured during and after my appointment. read more

I have been going to Angela for over 4 years, and the past year weekly visits. I'm 92 now and Angela continues to make me feel much younger. My latest problem has been nerve pain in my feet, legs & hands. After trying numerous pain lotions I asked Angie to concentrate my sessions on this and after 4 weeks the pain has subsided to the point I no longer stay awake at night because of it. The anxiety & depression she has treated me for is still no longer a problem. She continuous to keep my tinnitus under control, and the vertigo that I originally came to her for relief has never returned. At that time I also was waking around 3:00 every am and not being able to get back to sleep, and that is no longer a problem. My nerve pain was caused by radiation treatments in 2015 for breast cancer, which was my 3rd cancer surgery. She also gives me energy each time I go. I'm hoping my nerve pain will be cured, although at my age just keeping it suppressed makes me happy. The more I experience acupuncture, the more I feel it gives me much more peace of mind and help than prescription drugs. Discovered this center through my healthplan referral as well as researching on Yelp & Google. I was very impressed with the information on their website and how the facility looked. Among the several offices I vetted, San Mateo Acupuncture Center (not to be confused with the other office with a similar name) stood above the others. My experience may be different in that I knew I would have a prolonged treatment regimen and not just a few weeks. I have "frozen" shoulder syndrome (adhesive capsulitis) and in the early stages it can be an excruciating experience. The condition can last up to 1-2 years. Long story short, my physical therapy had to be halted because of the pain and loss of strength and my other option of steroid shot and/or surgery was not a choice for me. Alexandra at the front desk responded quickly to my initial email contact and then followed up with a phone call to confirm my needs. She was very easy to speak with, professional and knowledgeable. I scheduled an appointment with whom I thought would work best, (Doc) Angela. I liked her credentials and background, though all the acupuncturists (3) had extensive backgrounds and training. I started sessions in mid-July with almost no movement above my head or behind my back without setting off a locking excruciating pain in my shoulder. Even reaching or holding things could set it off. The office has plenty of building and street parking but it fills up quickly. The office itself is clean and nicely decorated with ambient relaxing music throughout. They offer water and tea in the waiting area with comfortable seats. Alexandra took care of my paperwork and she's a pleasure to talk to. When I went back to the room after a very short wait, each room was clean, well lit and again had a nice relaxing feel. Did not feel like a clinical, bare bones medical room. Angela came and greeted me. She was very warm and friendly and spoke in a calm friendly manner. She allowed me to explain my situation and past treatment history and how I was feeling and what my expectations were. Angela explains very thoroughly what each modality of treatment she may use, the expected outcomes or shortcomings and answers every question in an understandable way. (As we progress, we start each session this way and you feel you're part of your own treatment). My regimen consists of acupuncture with one-time use high quality needles she accurately places free-hand. She is very conscious to ask about any pain and will adjust the needle accordingly. Fire-cupping and gua sha (which I am fascinated by). I agreed I needed an intensive treatment schedule of twice a week for a month and half and re-assessing down to once a week. Hopefully we'll get to once a month. It's now mid-September and I have almost 75% of my movement and flexibility back with minimal or no pain. I can reach above my head in all angles and reach behind (of course all with dissipating tightness and soreness). Best of all I can feel the strength returning to my muscles which I felt had been in a state of atrophy. The treatments are working and know that if nothing else my recovery has been cut drastically. I am a Registered Nurse and knows both sides of pain. 5 years ago, I began to have shooting pain from my back to my toes.I was then diagnosed with 3 bulging discs from in my lower spine. As with anyone who has similar issues, Initially I went to see my Physician only to feel a slight relief and overwhelming sedation. At times I'd be so sedated, yet pain free, that I would have to call in sick in fear of making errors at work. So, in discussion with my physician, she gave me approval to seek assistance in management of pain with a chiropractor. Angela is a miracle worker! I sprained my ankle really badly just a few weeks before a scheduled mountain biking vacation and hoped she could help get me back on my feet (literally) so I could ride. I could barely put any weight on the ankle, so it seemed like a long shot. But after the first appointment with Angela, the swelling and pain decreased so much that I could walk without crutches. After the second treatment, I was walking without a limp...and that was just 4 days after the sprain. Angela is an incredibly talented acupuncturist. She helped me heal at warp-speed. While I went to her primarily for the ankle, she also helped ease pent-up stress in my brain and body. I forgot to mention to her that I had a persistent knot in my lower back muscle, but I didn't need to - her treatments melted all the sore and tight muscles in my body. I was disappointed with my treatment here. I had a few, I think five acupuncture sessions and my back pain is still there. At first I thought it was getting better after the first couple of sessions but then pain came back with the same intensity. I don't blame this on the therapist. I've been seeing Angela for almost 2 years now. I went as a recommendation from my chiropractor who said it would help with my knots. Since then I've been going at least once a month. It's helped me with my knots more than any massage ever has. Even my energy flow has changed. I was a bit skeptical about the needles and thought it would hurt but it doesn't hurt at all. Angela Galatierra-Granding, L.Ac., is a miracle worker. I went to see her to treat my constant jaw pain. Despite having an expensive ($1500) two-piece custom nightguard, my jaw ached. So, I made an appointment with her. I also asked her to treat my right arm - the one that runs the mouse all the time, the one that I've wrenched on several occasions, the one I keep re-injuring over and over. In the 4 days since I've seen her, I've marveled at the rapid improvement I've made. I don't want to be the cheesy commercial for her but I feel saved. Seemingly, every year my back would go out during physical activity and my approach to healing would simply be to wait until things "fell back" into place. About a year ago my lower-back went out when training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and I though my back would never be the same. This time, I decided to look into chiropractors and committed to it for about a year but didn't get the results I was looking for. It wasn't until I looked into acupuncture, that everything changed. I emailed SMAC and got a hold of Angela, she was able to book me for an initial appointment within the same week. During my first appointment with Angela, I noticed she was a great listener and really took the time and effort to understand the extent of my injury and its root cause. She also is a person you can just chat with for hours as she's fun, kind, and has a refreshing perspective on life. After the first appointment, she thought it would be appropriate to meet once every week and a half. After a few months of working with Angela, my back pain was gone (still have some structural things to work out) and a lot of that tension that would lead to my back going out ultimately was lifted. I only had acupuncture once before and wasn't a big fan and was a bit freaked out about it. But after my spinal cord injury last year my doctor heavily recommended acupuncture. I contacted Angela for the first time a couple months ago, what made me realize that this was the place for me was that the day I called, the receptionist suggested I talked to Angela (Acupuncturist) first to make sure she could help me. It was basically a small consultation over the phone to see if she could honestly be helpful. I new right away it wasn't all about the money. She genuinely cared and wanted to help the best way possible. I decided to see an acupuncturist after dealing with severe anxiety, left arm pain, and shoulder pain. I dealt with the pain for almost a year, it was constant and it was taking over my daily tasks. I saw a chiropractor for just the arm pain but felt no relief (i had 5 sessions). Immediately after seeing Angela for my first session (thorough consultation and procedure) I felt INCREDIBLE, literally after the first day. I was shocked because there's nothing like finding relief after so many months of struggle and pain. Her voice is so soothing and she explains everything so well, it leaves you with no questions. I've been going almost every month and have done at least 8 sessions and wow has my life changed. If anyone has ever been curious of trying Acupuncture I definitely recommend it, especially with Angela. She is now going on leave because she is having her first baby (YAY) :) which is sad but I'm excited to continue going because I'm sure the person who will be replacing her while she gets back is just as great.
