I came here for my birthday dinner. I made the reservation a month ago. I had a reservation at 8:45 pm but our indoor table wasn't ready yet so we probably didn't get seated until 9 pmish. The space is much smaller than I anticipated, but I loved the dimly lit ambiance inside. There's a single stall bathroom in the back, to the left of the bar. My friends and I shared (in order of my favorite): - Don Angie meatballs: it came with 6 pieces total. The bottom pieces were slightly crispy and I loved it! I would have ordered another one. - TRICOLORE SABINO: I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this salad. Each piece was seasoned, so no need to mix. - CARAMELIZED CRESPELLE: I was debating what dessert to get and chose this one cause the other one had nuts (which I'm allergic to) or it didn't sound appealing. My friends and I were like what are these sausage looking things but it was actually really good. It's caramelized with key lime pie filling. - STUFFED FARFELLE: this was good but nothing crazy, I only ordered because other reviews said it was good. I did prefer it over the lobster triangoli. - LOBSTER TRIANGOLI: pass on this. 4 pieces for $36 is crazy. It wasn't memorable because my friends and I only each had one piece. - complimentary pineapple sorbet: our server brought this for me on candle for my birthday! This place was very very delicious. 3 out of the 5 items stood out and the other 2 I'd skip! Our first server was exceptionally nice and gave us some good recommendations. The second server wasn't really engaged and so we were happy to have originally ordered with the first waiter. we got the: cheesy frittelle: which we could have skipped. It was a little dry but the insides of the orange blossom and saffron was very tasty. spicy tuna: an absolute must order. Crispy and fresh-- highly rec but wish it was a little larger of a portion. Lobster Triangoli which was the perfect taste with the white vodka sauce and pepper on top. The only wish would be that it came with 6 instead of 4-- a pretty expensive order for not a lot of food. steak magazzino: the star of the show!! something i've never had before but instantly became a fan. The meat was cooked rare but perfect with the little crisp ends with the anchovy crisp reminded me of the fried onions you'd get with albacore. I wouldn't call San Sabino a fusion restaurant, exactly; it's solidly Italian, with a particular seafood focus. But at the same time, it's not afraid to incorporate flavors and ingredients that span continents if it suits the dish. Take, for example, the Spicy Tuna (which I loved), where doughy, cheesy arancini balls and fresh tuna bites are topped with a charred scallion crema and Japanese furikake-flecked broccoli rabe, adding salty/umami/caramelized vibes. Or the pasta alle vongele, where a traditional Italian pasta + clams dish is pepped up with a spicy, peppery, zesty sauce, partially thanks to the Peruvian ají Amarillo. (This wasn't my favorite dish of the night, but definitely flavorful, and the chewy corkscrew pasta was excellent. Fresh parsley helps bring it down to earth a bit.) Other inventive, delicious dishes we tried included: -Crab and mortadella dip (Polenta Zeppole, Pistachio, Hot Cherry Pepper Jelly): This was incredible and I wanted more of it. I had forgotten about pepper jelly! The crab dip is served alongside crispy Italian fritters filled with polenta. The flavors in the dip somehow all work perfectly together; it tastes a little bit like a sweet and spicy relish. Lobster Triangoli pasta (white vodka sauce, black garlic): This pasta is deceptively simple. The eye sees four giant triangular pieces of pasta doused in a not-too-heavy cream sauce, topped with black garlic. But then, hiding inside, to accompany the lobster pieces, there's another sauce: a briny red vodka butter crowd-pleaser. Steak Magazzino (anchovy chili crisp, pine nuts): I don't eat much steak and only tried a bite, but this was excellent. Tender steak and flavorful toppings. Pineapple sorbetto (Almond Granita, Rosemary Pignoli Cookies): pineapple/almond flavors with a gritty texture thanks to the granita. The rosemary pine nut cookies are crumbled up into the sorbetto, as are chunks of pineapple. This was so good and so huge for a dessert that it had to go sadly unfinished. The cocktails here are excellent and I personally would go for them over the Italian-focused wine list, which is still strong. I tried two: -Mandarino (bourbon, mandarinetto, Montenegro, Aperol, honey, lemon): Yum. Paper Plane riff/zhuzhed up whiskey sour, with light bittersweet notes from the Aperol and Montenegro. The flavor profile of the Montenegro also added depth. Belmar Special: (Espresso, Coconut & Chicory-Infused Vodka, Cacao, Amaro Angeleno, Soda): Apparently this is a take on a Mind Eraser cocktail (see: college, mid-2000s), but I ordered it because it seems reminiscent of an espresso martini-style dessert drink. It's actually served in a tall glass filled with ice and it tastes incredible. There's cacao, there's espresso, there's aromatic citrus, including orange zest sprinkled on top of the ice. read more

Started with the Scotties Martini (garlic bread martini) which was maybe my favorite thing of the night. It was a savory girl's dream drink! The one thing I will say is that once you get to the pastas, you need to be selective because the acidity mix from the dishes may make you feel a bit uneasy. This is hands down my new favorite restaurant in the city. Everything from the staff, drinks, and most importantly, food were amazing. Our reservation was for outside which I was a little nervous about since OpenTable said there were no heaters. It turns out there are a few tables under heaters but some without. The hostess tried to get us a table inside which we really appreciated but ultimately unsuccessful. We had a cocktail inside and the vibes were immaculate. However, the food and drinks were so good we quite honestly forgot we were outside. For drinks, I had the Benny and my friend had the Scottie's martini. She was obsessed with her cocktail and I loved mine as well. I don't typically love martinis or olives but I tried hers and this one was very tasty and strong! Olives were stuffed with creamy feta which was good. For food, we shared everything so we could try a bunch of things which I definitely recommend. SETTING: corner restaurant space next to its sister Don Angie. Beautiful bar, lighting, and ambiance- though the tables along the perimeter are a little tightly packed together, they did a great job with the space. Perfect for smaller groups, dates, family dinner, just about any occasion. We came on a Wednesday for an 8:45pm res and were seated around 9:05. FOOD: the food here is amazing/it's one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. Every dish is packed with flavor, texture, acidity, and more. The MUST haves for me are always the stuffed mussels (I get them every time), the stuffed farfalle (the sauce is crack.... I lick up every last morsel), and the crab and mortadella dip (unassuming, and served with Ritz crackers but so damn good). You really can't go wrong here if you are an elevated seafood lover. SERVICE; the hospitality here is always perfect. The servers are so nice and friendly always offering great suggestions. We were seated a bit late (waited out in the heat), and they comped us a baby margarita for the wait. They really know how to take care of their guests. VERDICT: I've been lucky enough to dine here 3x now and I know that San Sabino will always be on my list of favorites to go at least once a year / bring people who love food as much as I do. Sadly I found this restaurant to be very overhyped. The pros: Decor is very cute. Overall really nice aesthetics and it's not overly loud. Though the spacing is very tight if that is something that bothers you The crap dip appetizer was very good. Unique flavors, kind of a sweet and spicy combo. And the hush puppies that accompanied it were fun and came out hot The negatives: - the hostess was very standoffish. But fine ok at least she acknowledged me quickly - it took about 12-15 min for the waiter to come to our table and overall service was very slow and he was just kind of a doornail - 2 of the three times we ordered for our main course came out cold. One was the lobster ravioli so the sauce was kind of congealed and it was generally unappetizing. Aside from that I found it to be bland. The other was the potato side dish which was also bad because it was fried so it became kind of soft and soggy. It also had this mustard-like drizzle on it that was a strange flavor. - the third main item was the mini manicotti which at least arrived warm but was overall just fine. My party of 6 got to try a bunch of things on the menu: --Apps/Sharables: The octopus carpaccio featured an interesting combination of chewy octopus/capocollo that was contrasted with the fresh scallion/fennel and cheesy crackers. The spicy tuna was tasty with its aromatic scallion cream and furikake. The stuffed mussels were fresh with a nice citrus note. The Greenpoint oysters were a fan fav at the table due to its fresh oysters and tasty sauce. The Don Angie meatballs were solid with its seasoning, chewiness, and parmesan involvement. --Pastas: My favorite was the Lobster Triangoli because the filling was well-seasoned and spicy which mixed well with the white vodka sauce. The Pasta Alle Vongole featured fresh clams and al tende pasta. While I liked the tobiko of the Stuffed Farfalle, its profile was a little too sweet which overpowered the crab flavors. --Mains: The Steak "Magazzino" was tender and juicy with the fragrant anchovy chili crisp. I liked how the shrimp parm wasn't too tomato-y however I found the sauce a little too sweet again. The shrimp pieces unfortunately were a little mushy, even when accounting for the batter, and didn't have the shrimp flavors I was hoping for. --Desserts: If you like chocolate and coffee, the Gelato Viennese is for you! I enjoyed the addition of hazelnut and caramel flavors. My table liked the tart profile of the Pineapple Sorbetto and the sour citrus notes of the Caramelized Crespelle with its lime-base cream. --Drinks: The Belmar Special was their version of an espresso martini but I liked how it wasn't milky/creamy. The coconut was subtle nevertheless. The Mambo Italiano had a refreshing sweet-savory combo from the passionfruit and basil. I wished the pear flavors in the The Benny were stronger. Had an early dinner res and even though it was the only time available that day..the entire time we were there they were only at about 30% capacity. I'm fatigued by the reservation games. I don't see how someone couldn't love it. So creative, beautiful flavors..I did not want to share. Halibut was absolutely amazing, one of the best preparations we have eaten. Shrimp parm was so good & a welcome twist on the chicken standard. Only item we didn't care for was surprisingly the DA meatballs, they were mushy and not great. Service was good, not great. I've been wanting to come here forever and got lucky to snag a Saturday dinner reservation. We arrived on time however did have to wait 10 minutes to be seated, but not a big deal. The interior was super vibey and cool. It was like almost a retro diner vibe but upscale. Here's everything we got: Cheesy frittelle: 7/10 savory and sweet with the honey! This was quite rich but I enjoyed it Spicy tuna: 9/10 if you like spicy tuna crispy rice (like at sushi restaurants) you'll love this. And I LOVE spicy tuna crispy rice Lobster triangoli: 10/10 my favorite bite hands down. Incredibly creamy and rich truffle sauce with the softest lobster center. Sooo good, it melted in your mouth Carbonara: 7.5/10 a good carbonara with pepperoni Don angie meatballs: 8/10 delicious especially with the sauce! Service was excellent. I've never been to Don Angie but I splurged for my birthday and at $200+ it just isn't worth the hype or the price tag. Even if it was less expensive, the majority of the food here just doesn't work. If I had to describe it, I'd say there's a lot of creativity that hasn't yet been finalized - it strikes a seasoned diner as a menu in development. The flavors of the fish should shine in a place like this - and even if it's meant to be accessible and casual, most of them just don't work. and I love sauce, but everything is over-sauced. The spicy tuna arancini was kind of a novelty with good flavor (but some won't like the hot vs cold temp), the stuffed mussels were an interesting enough concept (paella in a shell), but my partner thought it wasn't great. The triangoli as their signature dish was good - lobster filling has an interesting flavor, cream sauce is very heavy - again it was probably one of the better things but not worth coming back for. The Crab farfalle was very disappointing. It should taste brighter and fresher and could shine except the cream outdoes the lemon, the crab is unnecessarily smoky and the roe and foam are too over the top and don't work at all - could use something green in it. The charred broccolini had a sauce that was SWEET which was kind of gross honestly. The shrimp parm was very well executed if you're really interested in that- the shrimp is pleasantly cooked to perfection despite being fried in a parm - a really rich dish that you need to share and maybe the most interesting which isn't great when you consider it's being deep fried with mozzarella. This spot was suprisingly good, and I actually liked it better than Don Angie! Not too difficult to grab a lunch reservation and the inside is super cute. The service was the only drawback though -- we kept having to flag down our server since we waited a long time for service; the server also forgot about a dish we ordered so it came late. - Sanzese Spritz (5/5): we all started with this spritz, and honestly, was some of the best spritz I ever had. It's so light, refreshing and fruity, and not sweet at all - Oysters (5/5): so extremely fresh and flavorful! - Crab & Mortadella Dip (4/5): a bit troll that it comes with Ritz crackers but the dip is surprisingly not too heavy and very crab forward - Spicy tuna (3.5/5): spicy tuna was not the best, but the concept was fun! Arancini was nice and crispy though - Tricolore sabino (5/5): oh my god, one of the best salads I ever had. The greens were so fresh and flavorful, and had a crunchy texture from the toppings - Pasta alle vongole (5/5): was also really surprised by this pasta. It was cooked perfectly al dente, surprisingly light, and I loved the shape of the pasta! The clams were also delicious - Lobster Triangoli (2/5): least favorite dish. Extremely expensive for 4 pieces of thin pasta with barely any filling. Most of the filling is honestly oil and the sauce is extremely heavy - Shrimp parm (4/5): I actually really enjoyed this dish! It wasn't anything too crazy, but the shrimp was nicely breaded and also pretty juicy and big. - Don angie meatball (3/5): I like meatballs but these kind of tasted like frozen meatballs that were microwaved Come for the spritz, apps and the pasta alle vongole!! read more

My FAVORITE spot! The food here is a bit more innovative Italian than what's at Don Angie, dare I say for a more refined palate. I am obsessed. The crab dip was so good. The only skip is the shrimp parmesan, it was much too bread-y and not a lot of shrimp (besides the heads for display). The ravioli shaped cheese puffs were incredible, we reordered them immediately. read more

Came for restaurant week and had a very good value lunch! Reservations were easy to book for lunch and they also had plenty of bar seats open for walk-in. The restaurant was on the lively-quiet side for lunch with plenty of parties present but wasn't loud at all. The bartender served a complimentary refreshing, fruity non-alcoholic cocktail for restaurant week diners but they were also giving them out to others too! The spicy tuna was good but nothing memorable - it came with rice balls that were cooked fine and the textures, temperatures, and tastes balanced each other nicely between the rice balls with crispy exterior and the soft tuna. The meatballs with manicotti were fantastic! I loved the crispy Parmesan cheeses that balanced the soft pasta and meatballs extremely well. The sauce had nice tomato flavor though was a bit too salty. Otherwise it was a great meal and value. The manicotti was cooked on the softer side with nice cheese interior and even distribution of pasta and meatballs. Overall very good pasta and value for restaurant week, will definitely return! read more

We had a lot of great meals during our last NYC trip, but San Sabino was one of the best. Service was flawless, friendly, and attentive. What stood out most about the service was that the server was open and confident with recommendations, which ended up being our favorite dishes (stuffed mussels and manicottini), which is rare because I do my research before eating. We also enjoyed the lobster triangoli and octopus carpaccio. Everything was beautifully plated and the decor was nice as well. I highly recommend coming here asap. Reservations for weekday lunches should be reasonably easy to come by, especially with outdoor seating. read more

We stopped in for a bite and were not disappointed. Even a few days later I was telling my family about this lunch spot me and my friend found. It was very good and the service truly was excellent. Loved the decor, food was delicious and it was the perfect sizing. If you're a Diet Coke drinker.. their Diet Coke was the bomb... fresh, cold and crispy! Love the food, not in love with the service. Boyfriend brought me here for my birthday and the food was incredible. Loved everything especially the tuna arancini and the shrimp parm. The shrimps were the size of my head, extremely large and meaty! I'm not sure what to think of the service as it seemed like our waiter was unnecessarily close to my SO and perhaps hitting on him?? Super weird and felt uncomfortable every time he came by. The restaurant itself has a cool upscale retro feel to it and feels really unique. read more
