Duck Breast
Karson O.

Overall: I came here on a Tuesday night with my wife. Its got a Michelin star and its a part of the Chase dining program, so I was excited to try it. Getting a reservation wasn't that difficult with several weeks notice (doesn't go in 2 minutes like some places). The food ranged from just fine to very good and I especially liked the protein items from their whole organic animals. The problem is the restaurant is just way too small, which means cramped tables and some outdoor seating that looks like the restaurant just sort of overflowing onto the sidewalk. I also got the feeling that they were trying to turn tables quickly to make up for the small number of seats. Good food, bad overall experience. I'd go back for the food, but only to sit at the chef's bar. Food: 4 Drinks: 4 Service: 3 Value: 3 Atmosphere: 1 Food: We got the pan con tamate, yellow fin tuna, pulpo a la plancha, pork meatballs, goat confit, and duck breast. Our dessert was the chocolate ganache with creme fraiche. The pan was tasty but a little over salted and over oiled. The tuna also had good flavor but was a little bit firm. I was a little bit disappointed with the octopus - its an entire small octopus flattened on the grill. The texture was good but it was smothered in minced olive which dominated the flavor. I thought the meatballs, goat, and duck were all fantastic, especially the duck. The textures were great, flavors complemented well, and these were all cooked perfectly. Drinks: They had a very extensive wine list with a sommelier on staff. They also had some vermouth based cocktails, but no hard liquor. We each got a small carafe of wine that we both enjoyed. Service: Service was overall good but felt a bit rushed. I felt pressured to get my order in quickly and the sommelier only came around once before we had a chance to look at wines. They did a decent job of working in tight quarters, but I expected more from a place rated this highly. Value: I came here because of the Chase Sapphire dining credit. But after tax and tip we still ended up with a bill close to $300. Its good food that's elevated from a lot of other tapas places, but I this felt a little steep for the overall experience Atmosphere: This place has the potential to be really cool and the chef's bar looks elite, but its just way too crowded. They had us crammed in a corner with two other tables, none of which had enough room for the servers to get by. Every time the table next to me needed something I got my chair kicked or bumped into. And its a tapas restaurant, the servers come all the time. This was a major detriment to the experience.

First time at Casa mono & it did not disappoint! The place is on the smaller side but it still felt comfortable! Our waiter was knowledgeable and gave great service We started off with the hand carved jamon & the scallops. The sauce on the scallop was delicious we couldn't get enough of it. The Jamon has a great taste & it was cut perfectly. The skirt steak was paired perfectly with the onions & the romesco it created a very satisfying flavor. Lastly the mushrooms were my favorite but ima a mushroom lover ! The potatoes were on the smokier side but still tasty I highly recommend the visit !

My reservation was originally for outdoor seating, but due to the unusually hot weather that day, we requested to sit inside and were seated at the bar instead. The tiny space was packed with diners, and Michelin-star accolades were prominently displayed throughout the restaurant, creating quite a bit of anticipation. Despite all the hype, however, I can't say the food truly impressed me. The dishes felt a bit too heavy for my taste, and I didn't particularly enjoy the vermouth either. The service was good, but the tight and crowded setting made it difficult for me to fully relax and enjoy the experience. I won't return for sure.

Came here to celebrate my birthday with a group of 6 for lunch. We pretty much got the entire menu to share. Every dish feels quite elevated and the flavor profile is complex but preserves the traditional tapas notes. The service was fast and friendly. We were sat outside in February and the shed felt a bit shabby and cramped. Would go back for the food.

Came for a friend's birthday and managed to get a reservation on a Tuesday night through the Chase portal. The space is pretty snug, with dim lighting that creates an intimate atmosphere. Our server suggested ordering six to nine dishes for the three of us, and even after we had already picked six, she kept encouraging us to add more, which felt a bit pushy. We ended up getting the ensalada mono, fluke crudo, razor clams, duck, bone marrow, pig ears, shishito peppers, and a bottle of Josep Foraster Julieta 2023. The ensalada mono was the biggest surprise with its smoky flavor and mix of textures. Definitely not your typical salad. The razor clams were also a hit, perfectly cooked, light, and slightly sweet. The bone marrow with the bread made for a rich, indulgent bite that was completely worth it. The duck was another standout. It was tender and juicy with a slight gamey richness that was not overpowering. The mushrooms added an earthy, umami balance, and the pate brought a smooth, slightly buttery layer that made the dish feel even more decadent. The fluke crudo, pig ears, and shishito peppers were good, but not dishes I would order again. The sommelier was very knowledgeable. Their wine list is extensive, so we appreciated the guidance. We shared what we were looking for along with our price range, and he recommended a bottle that fit our preferences perfectly. Highly recommend. I cannot wait to come back!

Casa Mono has held a Michelin star every single year since 2009 and after finally making it here, I completely understand why. We ordered several dishes to share and everything was well executed. The scallops with Serrano green curry and minted cashews were incredible, bold and unexpected in the best way. The skirt steak with romesco and onion mermelada was the other standout, deeply savory and perfectly cooked. We also got the bone marrow with trout roe, razor clams, pan con tomate, and a dessert that was a great way to close out the meal. The pacing was nice and the service was attentive without being overbearing. The space is intimate and cozy, and the outdoor seating on Irving Place is a great option when the weather cooperates. Definitely make a reservation and come hungry. This one lives up to the hype.

Foie Gras with Cinco Cebollas
Helen H.

Casa Mono is a small intimate spot with about eight tables and a few bar seats. Wine bottles line the walls, and the cherry wood tables/chairs give the space a warm homey feel. It's also an open kitchen so you can watch the chefs making all the food. Casa Mono also held a Michelin 1-star since 2017. Service was very attentive throughout the meal. Servers were constantly checking in, changing plates, clearing bread crumbs, and replacing silverware every couple of dishes. The pacing felt thoughtful and polished. What we ordered for 2 ppl: - Daily Special Shrimp: Three large shrimp with great texture and flavor. The sauce had a nice balance of tangy and creamy. A well-executed bite. - Razor Clams a la Plancha: Decent size with a rich, buttery finish. Slightly sandy, and not as sweet as I prefer. - Patatas Bravas: Firm with a creamy, savory flavor. The green onion added a nice lift. - Pulpo a la Plancha with Fennel and Grapefruit Ensalada: Crispy pan-seared octopus topped with minced olive paste, fennel, and grapefruit salad. Each component was simple on its own, but together the flavors balanced well. - Foie Gras with Cinco Cebollas: A favorite. Crispy sear on the outside, rich and buttery inside. The tangy sauce helped cut through the richness. - Duck breast with Maitake Mushroom and Miel de Jerez: Good flavor, but too chewy. Hard to fully enjoy because of the texture. Overall, Casa Mono delivers a refined dining experience with attentive service and thoughtful plating. Some dishes really stood out, while others fell a bit short for me, especially given the Michelin star and price point.

Duck Breast and Oxtails Stuffed Piquillo Peppers
Grace W.

I've been wanting to try this restaurant and finally got around and had dinner tonight at Casa Mono. It's not a big place and tables are kind of tight to each other, however the food/tapas are absolutely delicious. I especially love the Razor Clams very flavorful and Duck Breast are so tender & juicy. We also enjoyed the Burrata and Pork Belly. The Oxtail Stuffed Piquillo Peppers are very tasty as well, not a big fan on Fried Pig Ear tho, the dish is a bit greasy. Overall a great meal and we will definitely be back again to try other tapas on the menu!

Lisa L.

Loved everything we ordered, especially the razor clams. Friendly, competent service. Tables are small and very close together but they did a good job pacing the courses so the table was never crowded with too many dishes. Highly recommend and would come back again when in the area.

Scallops

Flawless, immaculate, deezed. Spanish tapas were all to die for - the fluke crudo was my fav. Service was very well timed. I got an espresso at the end, told the waiter he forgot to charge me for it and he said it's on the house.. that's what I call service. Atmosphere felt like Europe. Not surprised this place has had a 1 Michelin star for so many years. My only wish is that I tried this place sooner.

Arroz negro & Skirt Steak
Sharon M.

Ordered the yellow tuna, arroz negro, & skirt steak. All very good flavors, friendly service, & cozy ambience. On the pricier side, so did not leave feeling full, but would've had a full score otherwise.

Stuffed Lamb Belly with Mojo Rojo, Burnt Onion Yogurt & Pumpkin Seeds
Angela Z.

Cute and cozy tapas spot! The space is quite small, but we only waited 30 minutes for a 2 people walk-in at 7PM on a Friday. We popped in across the street at Dear Irving for a drink, and our table was ready before we were done. The server recommended 4-6 dishes for 2 people, but we got away with 3 for 2 girls with normal sized appetites lol. Everything was delicious and we left quite stuffed. The drinks were great as well, would definitely come back.

Kit C.

Still consistently outstanding and absolutely deserving of its Michelin star! Every visit delivers--flawless execution, bold flavors, and beautifully composed dishes. Standouts for me were the bone marrow, razor clams, and the creamy eggs with uni--pure indulgence and unforgettable. If I had to point out one miss, it would be the foie gras. The sauce was quite heavy and didn't pair as well as expected; a brighter balance--like apple or pear, as many restaurants do--would have elevated it. That said, this was a small hiccup in an otherwise exceptional dining experience!

The table we sat at was quite large, and I think it could have fit a few more people. The staff was friendly, and the lighting wasn't too dark, nor was it too loud. While I liked the atmosphere, I found the food, or rather specifically the tapas, to be not good at best, while the main dishes were better but also ranged in quality. The fact that the tapas we ordered were pretty closely priced to the mains means I would recommend the mains only based on portion and taste alone. To drink, a bunch of us split a bottle of wine from their large and pretty reasonably priced selection. The first tapas that arrived was something that I could not eat. This was the Pulpo Zarautz for $32, listed as octopus with garlic and merken seasoning served over mashed baby potatoes. The dish was small, and people thought it was OK as they found the pieces of octopus a tad chewy. They liked the spices but were surprised that the potatoes were a bit cool. The $24 Gambas Al Ajillo, with slow-cooked prawns, white wine, EVOO, garlic, and mermen, was alright. There was a handful of shrimp, and they were decently cooked, but the "ajillo," or rather, the garlic, was very light. Therefore, I found it a bit bland, which is almost never the case for this dish. I wouldn't recommend this based on price and flavor. Last and least of the tapas was the $22 Tortilla De Patatas, listed simply as a Spanish omelette. There was an option to add chorizo for $2 more, which we did. Along with the omelette, this also arrived with a few sauces and some pieces of crunchy bread, which were the highlight, as the omelette wasn't good either. The texture of the omelette was very different than any other Spanish omelette I've ever had. It was quite soft with a bit of chew, with a mild chorizo flavor. Along with the greenish color, it wasn't exactly appetizing. I wouldn't recommend this at all, but thankfully, that was the last tapas we ordered. My favorite of the main dishes was the Solomillo & Pebre for $28, listed as skirt steak topped with parsley and olive oil, with hand-cut fried potato and salad. While not the most tender, as it is a skirt steak, it was still well-flavored with the topping almost reminding me, to an extent, of a less oily version of chimichurri. The potatoes had a unique texture, being slightly crispy on the outside while remaining slightly soft in the middle. The salad on the side, which also arrived with one of our other mains, was a tasty mix and certainly more effort than a typical salad you find in many of these places. We also liked the $32 Costillas De Cerdito, with pork ribs in beer, mustard, and rosemary with hand-cut fried potato and salad. The pork ribs were flavorful, though I did find a bit of it to be a bit fatty, but some of that is expected with pork ribs. The mildly sweet and slightly rich sauce paired with the pork ribs. The same comments from before can be made about the potatoes and salad. Last was the OK Paella De Mariscos for $38, listed as rice cooked with shrimp, mussels, clams, prawns, and fresh saffron. The portion size was good, with a lot of mussels and clams in particular, and a handful of shrimp. Of the bite I had of the two large prawns, they were plump and juicy as well. However, the rice was both a bit bland and a tad mushy and felt a bit overcooked compared to many other paellas. There was some socarrat on the bottom as per usual, which was the best part. It's a bit difficult to rate this place. The spices, textures, and flavors were lacking from the overpriced tapas, and I honestly wouldn't recommend any of them. For the main dishes, they were tasty, but you can get a better-cooked skirt steak at many other places for a similar price. The ribs were decent, and the paella was just OK. If we only had the tapas, I probably would be giving this place a 1, but for the whole meal, an upper 2, rounded up.

We tried a variety of dishes and each one was a hit (from the croquettes to the octopus to the paella). One member of our group doesn't usually like seafood and thought the octopus was delicious! The drinks (both alcoholic and non alcoholic) were also yummy. The staff were super accommodating as well which I really appreciated!! Of note, the restaurant bar stays open longer than the kitchen so make sure you check in with them on when the kitchen closes (it was around 10 when we went but things were still in flux so that may change!)
