I went to sandbox, we had a reservation at 7:00 pm on Saturday. We waited about 15 minutes, and we just asked for an estimated time to start playing. The manager came and he made arrangements so we wouldn't have to wait any longer. Thank you! The service was great! I enjoyed the game. It is a 30 minute game. The bathroom was dirty, but I would go back. I understand there is allot of people that go to this place, they get busy, but to me this is a reflection of how they may take care of the equipment that is reusable for all guests. read more

I really wanted to like it and maybe I would have if it actually worked. It was just my buddy and I and our session was interrupted at least 3-4 times due to stuff not working. The gear is your basic oculus, hand and foot trackers which could definitely use some improvements, a vest that gives some feedback, and headphones. Pretty standard and similar to what I have used before. We started the tutorial and a couple minutes in my buddies gun stopped working so we had to wait a good 5 minutes for the operator to figure out what was going on with it after calling in additional help. Then about 10 minutes in my gun stopped working. They paused the game again, took the gun, did some stuff and gave me another one back a minute or two later. Five minutes go by and the gun stops working again. This time I can see the gun hovering maybe 5 feet from my body. Pause the game again. Bring in additional support and 5-10 minutes later they unpause it and we are back in the game. Rinse and repeat another 2 times and we finally finish. Again, I really wanted to like it and maybe I would have if it worked properly but unfortunately that is not the case. My buddy felt the same. I would have thought they'd have offered some form of pass or voucher afterwards due to all the trouble but we were given a standard 10% off coupon for our next visit. Wish I could give zero. Check in at 3:45 for a 4:00 reservation. 3:15 reservations were still waiting to play. How can you possibly run a business that is reservation ONLY and run so far behind. Perhaps cut off reservation times in your system. You know how many rooms you have and how many employees to work. This was such a fun and amazing experience! I highly recommend giving it a try! We played the Curse of Davy Jones!! We did not book in advance either. We were a small party of four and didn't have to wait too long. I believe we had to wait like 45 mins or less. We just walked around the mall and shopped a bit then came back and we were assisted after checking in! The staff was helpful and will show you how to put on the equipment and what to do as well! If your head gear is too tight please make sure to let the staff know they will quickly come to adjust it! We went for a birthday celebration and had a ball! Afterwards they email you the video of you playing the game! Funny and cool! There is also a little virtual birthday celebration that is included after the game! Cool! Lol. Amazing, amazing experience. The closest you can be IN a sci-fi movie. It takes you to the future, which feels real. I went for Star Trek episode, and wow.. you are in the shop and then beamed in and out, and then you get to shoot aliens, and get shot and stunned by them., and then you are in the galaxy and then falling down in a cave. And you get to feel all of these .. On top of that, it's COVID friendly.. so you are safe while enjoying it. The crew members are super friendly and helpful .. Please go try !! read more

My only comparison is some of the VR games available around the city, which tend to be glitchy, not necessarily spot on. We chose the Deadwood Mansion experience & received 30 minutes of action. The zombies & rats were unpredictable. The level bosses required teamwork & strategy. My 8-year-old & 10- year-old nephew were both thoroughly entertained & couldn't stop talking about what we would do the next time around. I really appreciated the attention to detail the staff provided. The text guiding us to the facility was precise & we were gracious to have received it. Without that text, we would have been lost. Also, my son's gun was not working correctly during the game. Our attendant noticed this & quickly took action. I will say it got pretty warm in the room; by the time our event was over, I was sweating, but that's the only gripe & it's not a deterrent. read more

We had a 2:15 reservation we called about 20 mins before because we didn't know which parking garage to park in and the girl was rude and said we better be there by 2:15 or they're giving our spot away. When we arrived they made us wait till 2:30 then we went into one room and got ready to play and the equipment was broken so after an hour of trying to fix it they moved us to a different room and then they couldn't get that equipment to work either. After 2 hrs the game finally started and then after 10 mins broke down again and it kept breaking down. It was a horrible experience and for the price not worth it we are on vacation so they agreed to refund us. I watched people so up late and be turned away being told they were going to have to pay $50 no show and reschedule for different day. Big waste of time and money... read more

Pretty dumb to put on your website that you guys can cancel a reservation if you're five minutes late but will have you waiting over 25 minutes and not tell the people waiting anything. I get these things get extended but to not be transparent with your customers if your appointment is going to be pushed back. Definitely need to work on letting people know if things are going to be later than expected instead of all the workers walking around you and no one saying anything. Sorry to say our first visit here was not a good one. We were waited on by no less than four different people. It was very confusing to know who was taking care of us. From the beginning they let us know there would be a wait despite having reservations. Apparently they had glitches earlier in the day leaving them behind. We were understanding of that circumstance but there were so many other problems because the place was so disorganized. When we finally got into our room there was so little instruction. We were put with a couple who had never done virtual reality so they spent a lot of time being confused which interfered with our experience. Her avatar was messed up so the experience had to be restarted to fix that. My husband's weapon didn't work which further delayed everything. The worst part was that there was an echo in our earphones causing everything anyone said to be repeated. Imagine five people talking with everyone's voice echoing. We kept telling the people supervising us about the echo but really received no response. I understand that help is scarce these days but they really need more training. The experience itself, Star Trek, was okay but we have definitely had better VR scenarios elsewhere. Sad. read more

Last Saturday, for my son's 13th birthday, we had a reservation at Sandbox VR in Oakbrook, Illinois. Our reservation was for 2:55 and as requested we arrived 20 minutes early (at 2:35 pm) and checked in. I was told they were "running a little behind" but "that we should be able to play in 15-20 minutes." After regularly asking when we would play, I was repeatedly told "soon." Eventually we were out in a room, but one of the head sets didn't work which took the staff 45 minutes to fix. Our actual start time was 5:40 pm, almost 3 hours after our original reservation. When our session was over, no staff members apologized or offered any consolation for our inconvenience. Based on this experience I would not return to Sandbox VR or recommend it to anyone. When the game was working, my son and his friends did enjoy it, but it's hard to justify the wait and inconvenience to go again. read more

We have our reservation at 9:10 and not a single staff cared about us until half an hour later where I had to talk to someone about our wait time, then we only get partially started. This is our second time here and the second time this happen. I just wish the staff would care and actually take us in, instead of giving each other hair cuts, then rushed us through the experience. Compared to our last time where we actually get to take our pictures, select weapons, etc... This time we were given the *I don't give a fuck* attitude along with *hurry up and get outta here* kind. My second time back and I thought it would be better ‍ The ppl who work here are extremely nice but the wait time is absolutely ridiculous. I had 2 groups of 6 for my sons 12th birthday party, our reservation was for 3:45pm. We did not get in the room until 5:10pm. Once we were in the room it took another 22 minutes before the game started, due to all the equipment malfunctioning‍. At 5:35pm the game finally started and not even 8 minutes later the game froze, had to be rebooted and the batteries had to be changed on multiple players. I was promised by the manager Vouchers for my wait and all the malfunctions but I never received them. I would not by any circumstance suggest going here unless you have time to spare. Came here about a month ago and was probably one of the coolest experiences ever. We had the honors of playing dead mansion (a survival of a zombie apocalypse in a mansion) and hands down lots fun and very realistic. Reason for 4 stars is because the headphones were very uncomfortable. Ended up having a headache afterwards (still was worth it tho). I took my nephew and daughter to the SandboxVR near San Mateo, CA and we loved it. It was such a fun experience. We played the Amber Sky and we had so much fun and you feel like you're actually there. We were all surprised that we didn't get dizzy from the VR but the technology has gotten so much better. So I decided to take my 4 other nieces to the Oakbrook location when I returned home and try the Zombie one. We were able to schedule a reservation for 11:15 on a Saturday night. We got there around 10:50 pm and the guy helping us was very nice and helped us getting all our gear and playing the game but so many things went wrong to make for a less than ideal experience. First, we went into the initial room and got all of our gear on only to find out that one of the backpacks were messed up. So we took off our headsets and moved to another room. In the other room, we put on the new headsets again and this time there were 2 guns that were messed up that took a while to fix. Then the worst of the mishaps was during the game, we had to stop not once, not twice but 3 times during the game that we didn't get to be engrossed in the experience. I actually should've stopped it a fourth time because my own headset actually gave out so I stopped hearing anything and then while the game was still playing for the others, my view went to the default introduction view and I was actually out of the game while the others kept playing. At that point I didn't want to ruin the experience for my nieces any further and I just stayed quiet plus we were already past midnight since the mall's lights went out. After we left, I asked my nieces what they thought and they said it was cool but just ok since there were so many defects and glitches with the experience. We went to the Sandbox Vr on 10/28 with a reservation for 5 people at 2:30pm first they informed us that they were running about 15 minutes or so behind. Then about 45 minutes later they gave us our equipment to put on. The equipment never worked. We were told an hour and 15 minutes later to step out so that they could recalibrate the room. It was a complete waste of time. It was something that we were looking forward to doing but this experience was horrible the workers weren't helpful at all. They seem like they had no clue as to what was going on. We politely asked for our money back. And even asked if we could get some type of free voucher for another time and the manager who's name was Edwin said "I can give you some candy ". Very very unprofessional establishment especially for the prices. Would never go again and definitely wouldn't recommend. VERY DISAPPOINTED. read more

5 stars for the VR experience 1 star for the real world experience of customer service and operations (you expect more when spending ~$300) The VR experience is super cool but prepare yourself for delays and disappointing customer service. GETTING AHOLD OF SOMEONE IS TOUGH We knew it was at the mall but didn't know the best entrance for parking or where to go. We never received an email w any info. We tried calling over and over and couldn't get anyone on the phone. We finally found a map and made our way but honestly it stressed us out because we didn't want to be late (more on this later). Note: it's upper level not too far from Nordstroms fyi! INITIAL IMPRESSION WAS... NOT GOOD While the storefront aesthetic was cool, when we walked in, there was no one up front to help us. The entrance was full of other people unsure of what to do as well. Lots of confusion. There are kiosks to check in but no direction or clarification on if only the party leader needed to checkin or every single person from our party. We looked around for someone to advise us but couldn't find anyone. We waited around a while and eventually found someone who worked there and they acted like we were bothering them by asking for help! Eventually we came across a few more employees and while 2 were helpful, almost all of the rest seemed annoyed, bothered, barely speaking, unenthused, etc. WE SAT AROUND FOREVER Our reservation was for 5:15. We were told to arrive 15 minutes early at 5pm and we did. They didn't begin our session until 6:30! No one acknowledged that the sessions were running late or apologized for the delay. I'm thankful we didn't have plans after the session because we most definitely would have been late. And what's worse is there was a group who had a 5:30 reservation, arrived after us but who got to start BEFORE us. Lots of frustration while we waited. THE VR IS PRETTY AWESOME This is the plot twist.... Thankfully the actual experience of using the VR didn't disappoint. Once we got through all the tech set up, It was a great. We were totally transformed to another place and definitely immersed. Every single person in our group was happy w the VR and interested in considering another storyline in the future. And the email we got afterwards w highlights from the session was awesome! TLDR: Sandbox definitely offers a cool tech experience but they seriously need to get their operations and customer service together. read more

Sadly, this is our second bad experience now. The first time was about a year ago and the equipment didn't work and our game had to be paused/stopped multiple times completely ruining any immersion there may have been. This time our event was booked for 4:55. We started to get set up around 5:25 (30 minutes late). As we got set up two of us experienced severe buffering and no comms. They attempted to fix our parties equipment until 6:10 before we said we had to go as we had a dinner appointment at 7PM. During this entire time (45+ minutes) they had all of us standing still with all of the equipment on while they tried to fix the 2 that would not function. This was not pleasant for a few in our group. The game staff did what they could do and actually tried the same thing multiple times w/ the same result. Their IT staff is not onsite so they were speaking to them remotely via chat and they continued to offer the same suggestions over and over which did not help. During this time, we suggested that we just reschedule given we were now over an hour delayed and there was another group behind us which was now delayed over an hour as well. We asked if we could speak to a manager at this point. We were advised the manager would come to us but he never did. I then asked again and was told to go find him. Of course nobody told us who the manager was but eventually he was described to us (All they said was that he had dreadlocks) and we located him. We asked for a refund and some type of compensation given 6 of us wasted 2 hours of our time and a birthday event for one of the participants. The manager Maurice (sp?) said "no, we are refunding you your money". We did not get one apology from any of the staff we interacted with during this entire ordeal. It is apparent their technology is not mature and/or reliable enough to be in production given this has happened to us twice in the span of one year. Unfortunately for this company this has soured us on Sandbox VR and they have lost quite a few customers due to the lack of customer service. While a refund was necessary, an apology and a goodwill gesture due to the equipment failure would have gone a long way in retaining us as repeat customers in the future. Update 12/13/23 I reached out to corporate and they offered to comp us for the 6 tickets. I will update after we go again (after holiday) to see if these hardware/software issues still persist. read more

Sandbox First time (May 2021) : amazing. Second time (June 2021): awful. I booked immediately after my first experience because I had a great time. The day of my second, I received a call asking me to cancel because they were over booked. I declined. I was then informed that I'd have to come 30-45mins later (despite them not offering any grace periods for late clients). Sure. We arrive arrive at the new time and they're trying to rush us (after asking us to come later). The young lady in the front asked half of our party when the others were getting there despite them still having 15mins (some arrived at 6:15, they asked us to come between 6:30-6:45). She asked 4x in 5 minutes. Ok, it's busy. The guy setting us up, input the info in wrong (our names), when we pointed it out, he said he couldn't do anything about it. I asked for someone else and he changed it. Our hand and ankle straps were torn and couldn't be secured, there was nothing they could do. We go into the assigned room, it had not been sanitized. We start putting on our gear, two of four backpacks don't work and one headset doesn't work so they try to troubleshoot. 15mins later, they bring in two others and get the headsets and backpacks working. We go through the instructions, and one of the oculus (VR glasses) stops working. They trouble shoot. They then "check all of our backpacks and other gear", and we're all set. We start our game, one headset falls off because they're old and can't be adjusted to fit, we point this out, they don't pause the game. We just keep going. Halfway through one of the backpacks die. Complete black screen. They pause the game. We wait. They trouble shoot, nothing. Bring someone else in, nothing. 10mins later they realize it's dead. Ok, they try to restart the game. The other three backpacks die. In addition to not sanitizing after the last group, they didn't recharge the equipment. We have to wait for them to switch everyone's battery. It's been like 20 minutes (the experience is only 30minutes) in the middle of our session and we're just sitting there in the hot room. The fans stop when the game stops, it's hot and humid. "There's nothing they can do." 30minutes later, we get going again, we're annoyed and hot. Headsets still not secure and keep falling off. We just finish and leave. Annoyed, unsatisfied, completely over it. This location doesn't have the capacity, equipment or service to handle what they're trying to do. It was a terrible experience. We also didn't get our highlight video, only the trailer. So the posing thing they have you do at the end was a waste. And the trailer included the glitch from when our backpacks died. So yeah, awful all around. read more

There is a reason I'm not giving this place two stars because the actual VR experience was pretty fun, but it wasn't worth the gruelling 2 hours of pain my family and I had to endure. I think the biggest problem with this place is the staff. They seemed like the most impatient people that honestly could care less about its consumers. Most of them had AirPods in and when we had questions about our wait-time, they would either ignore us or respond in a condescending manner. We had booked for a 3:50 time-slot and were forced to wait an extra hour, and they would refuse to tell us why. At one point, we overheard staff members talking amongst each other, berating and actively being racist towards a black family that had been waiting there for a long time as well. My family, who were indian, heard how they hated 'our kind' of people, which made us feel completely unwelcomed and uncomfortable. They refused to talk or even acknowledge us as we were waiting at that place for 2 hours. Honestly these people care more about themselves than other people, and that is not how customer service should be. All and all, this place needs a lot of work. When you book, dont expect to be in the game on time, expect to wait a long time with terrible customer service. When you get to play and have fun, you're reminded of the terrible experience you had to endure and realize it was just not worth it. So with that, I do not recommend this place to anybody that want to have a good time with their family. read more

Unorganized! Awful experience. My daughter saw this place on Tik Tok and was looking forward to it for her birthday. Reservations were made in advance with a strong emphasis on being on time. When we arrived there were multiples groups of people waiting. One group told us they were waiting for over two hours. Even with a paid reservation, the manager could not promise a time when we could play as more people continued to come in. So disappointed in an experience that I thought would be fun. This was the most AMAZING experience for me and my family. We went yesterday, May 13th and Dave was there bright and early to let us in. He was soooo sweet and patient. We did the Deadwood Mansion experience and Dave was there to help guide us virtually when we didn't know what was going on. We had such a good time and were able to view our experience afterward. My son got the most kills while his sister was most accurate. Completely COVID safe and followed COVID procedures. I can't emphasize enough how amazing Dave was, he deserves a raise!!!! Brought my girlfriend here for her birthday, and we both had a really good time playing Deadwood Mansion. The staff was very kind and welcoming and helped us get signed in and ready and even cracked some jokes. The setup was made quick and easy with the help of the staff, and the equipment was much cleaner and sanitary than expected. The experience was very fun and exciting. However, there were a couple of technical difficulties with some of my girlfriend's equipment. There were problems with the audio being too low and the mic not working as well as issues with the body tracking system where her body would appear in places she was not in the game. The experience was very fun and worth the $55 but there were some hiccups with the tech. read more

Let me start by saying that I love gaming, especially VR gaming. I own an Index but always wanted to play with a group. A couple of friends and I decided to try out Sandbox and we were super excited - especially for Deadwood Mansion. We got to Sandbox on time, geared up and went into the room. Our rep loaded the game and right away I noticed that the volume on my headset was very low. I notified the rep and he fiddled with it but eventually put us into the game. I could barely hear anything nor my friends and they had to pause the game multiple times. The rep told us the issue was that the volume on my headset wouldn't stay up on their computer and that they informed IT. Well the IT person told them to just keep running the game knowing the issue. After the game ended, I was very upset. My group was excited to try VR with the full experience but it was interrupted multiple times and everyone felt bad that I was not enjoying it which effected all of our moods. I get it, technical issues happen but it's how you go about it. I want to say whoever our rep was, he was very apologetic and very nice. However, the rest of the employees were obnoxiously rude. One in particular kept going back and forth with me and said "well because you played the whole game that is the full experience". No sir, it is not the FULL experience if you are playing with no sound. In the end, I did receive a voucher but will I go back? probably not. The game could have been amazing. The two stars are for the game on its own and for our rep. Otherwise I would have put zero. read more

We arrived 15 minutes prior as requested, got suited up and in our studio by 10:15 and stood there for the next 30 minutes while the employees tried to get our weapons working. About 10:50 we were told to take off the gear because we needed to change studios. Sat on the bench outside a different studio for about 10 minutes waiting for them to finish. As the other group walked out one of them told us, "Good luck playing with broken gear." I could get past the uncomfortable headphones (the padding was missing) but could not get past the deafening echoing that occurred throughout the entire game. As we were leaving, we could hear the employees telling the later appointments "Your reservation is still in the queue, but will not be on time due to technical problems." If Sandbox VR spent some time and money to maintain or upgrade their equipment, I'm sure every customer that day would have had a better experience. read more

We had a reservation for 3:30pm by 5:30 we were still waiting and there were people who had reservations after us that were seen before us. Managers don't communicate and we were told we would be next but they were having technical difficulties which meant the 30 minute experience wouldn't even start until that was taken care of! My family and & I (6 people apart of the experience and one person sitting out). Arrived at our scheduled time 1pm to play squid games. We were told that the group in front of us was experiencing tech issues and would be done momentarily. We waited patiently but it took about an hour for the group ahead of us to finish their session. While we waited we asked if they had water to purchase but they only had a water bottle refill station. My sister had went into the bathroom, which she said was gross & it did not have any toilet paper. We were then finally called into the game room after the long wait. We had put on the VR head sets but with so many tech issues throughout our experience. The place was completely understaffed and were not able to fix the technical issues we were experiencing in a timely manner. My dad and I had the VR sets on us the whole time. It took over an hour to get everyone set up and ready to play a game that only lasted for 20 minutes. We only played 5 out of 8 games that were included in the squid game experience. We came to celebrate a birthday in the family and spent a lot of money to be there and we paid for a 20 minute game and a 2 hour and 10 minute wait. We left sandbox at 3:30pm. They need more staff to make the tech problems go smoother, to clean bathrooms, and to provide guests with a better experience. I hope this gets fixed. read more

I was apart of a group that had a 3pm reservation. 2 people from our party walked in literally at 3:02 and we could not go forward with the reservation. The manager, Dave was completely rude and obnoxious to us in his explanation of why we couldn't proceed. He even walked off in the middle of us speaking to him to come to a resolution. This is one of the worst customer experiences I've ever had and I will not be back. I suggest that you make such a strict late policy clear in the confirmation. Also it would help with better instructions for getting to your location which was the cause of them being 2 minutes late in the first place....and Most importantly, someone needs to train Dave on respect and common courtesy. There is certainly a way to explain a policy without being rude and condescending. read more

We were walking around having a conversation and then I realized SandBox was finally open! We walked in and was welcomed by the store manager, David. He was a great host and was introducing the history of the place and where it was founded. He was very knowledgeable of Sandbox and information on the gear needed to be used. It feels like you are being prepared to be in a movie with all the gear on. He pumped us up to try Deadwood Mansion and mentioned other games to try out on our next visit. On September 4th, 2021, me and my party had an appointment at 2:45pm. I arrived in the parking lot, at 2:35pm and called Sandbox Oakbrook location, and Antonio answered the phone. He gave me directions on how to get directly to the door. I arrived inside around 2:40pm. He asked my for my name and I gave it to him. I was the only black person in the establishment. I was the last person to walk through the door. He asked me where the rest of my party was at, and I told him that they were in the parking lot trying to find the location as well. I then gave them the same directions that he gave me.  He said he would extend it 5 extra minutes, after that, he would have to cancel. I said that's fine, would I get my money back. He said NO, and I would be charged $50. I said no, I am going to get my money back with you, or through my bank. He said do what you need to do then. He then turned around and yelled to this couple who was clearly there before me for some time "I'm so happy you guys arrived early!". I asked him what his purpose was in saying that because if he really wanted to thank them, he would have thanked them as soon as they walked through the door, not after he seen that my party was running late. I told him, he also didn't have to scream it aloud so that I could hear, but you wanted me to hear trying to be funny. I called my party and told them that I'm really getting bad vibes, and I don't think this place is for us and explained to them what he just did to make me feel uncomfortable. They arrived about 5 minutes after the extended time Antonio gave us, but as soon as they opened the door, and before they even stepped, they foot in the door, Antonio stopped them from coming in and told them that the reservation was cancelled. I said, how did you know they was even with me, because their black? They could have been a totally different party, but he assumed because they were black, that they were with me. I also told him, I checked and there was another available time in about an hour that we could have took, but instead of saying "sorry, your reservation cancelled and there is a $50 cancellation fee, I can get you in again in about an hour if  you guys wanted to wait". At that point I was upset, and I walked out the establishment. I allowed my party to discuss things with him. They walked out shortly after with information that was supposed to be "corporate information". I told them, that wasn't enough for me and I wanted to speak to a manger, I walk back in, and ask for a manger, he told me that he was the manager. I asked if there was anyone else, I could speak to, he said no, he was the only one on duty. My aunt spoke with a regular employee, and he was so ashamed by Antonio actions that he went to the back to get us help. Antonio was upset that we were speaking to another employee, he said hes not a manger, he can't help you. I said I rather deal with him than you because hes being more respectful. The other employee brought a young lady up, and that's when Antonio started talking to her. I asked him why he was telling her our business, he said because she's a manger. I said I thought you said there wasn't any other mangers on site. Why did it take us asking another employee for help...why did you lie? The young lady was name was Melissa, and she couldn't believe how Antonio was acting and lying about so many things. I told her, I understood the cancellation policy, and the $50 fee. I would get my money back, I would just be charged a $50 fee, but Antonio said I wouldn't get any money back at all. I told her, I would have been fine with the policy, but I'm not fine with being disrespected when I paid my money just like everyone else. I deserve to get my money back for how he handled the situation and embarrassed me and my party in front of all the other guests. That I would never come back or recommend anyone else to come back here. She apologized for Antonio actions and refunded me my money and said she was going to email me an invoice. I waited a few days, because I never received my invoice. I call back up there and ask to speak with Melissa because she's the one who helped me. A guy on the phone named David (who Antonio said "corporate") answered the phone. He said Melissa wasn't there. I said do you know when she might be in, he said no. I said well she was helping me. He said well I'm over her, so I can help you. I told him the situation and he cut me off and talked over me and said Antonio had already told him the situation. He said he don't believe Antonio would do something like that and Melissa broke protocol for helping me in the way she did. He explains the policy again, and I told him I already understood the policy, what I don't understand is disrespect and how the situation was handled.
