The experience at the sandbox VR was such an amazing experience. It was so much fun when playing the games. We were a group of six people. We played the zombie game first and then the squid game. It's a bit exhausting but trust me. It is so much fun no matter what age group you are. You're gonna have a lot of fun The best part was the VR experience where your team members/people who are playing with you they are in the costumes not really, but as per the VR. The staff was very helpful. There are a lot of games to play since we chose zombie and squid game we just had blast So playing for almost hour and a half even though we were very tired and exhausted we still didn't feel like leaving the room. We enjoyed holding the guns and shooting at the zombies and the squid game is more like competing against each other. I highly recommend this place and would recommend at least 5 to 6 people in a group cause it's more fun when there are more people and maximum they hold in a room is six people. So minimum two and maximum six I would recommend going there over the weekdays if possible for two reasons 1. Weekday the price is a bit cheaper like five bucks cheaper. 2. It's gonna be less busy on the weekdays. All the staff members, including Matthew, Zee and Robin were really nice and helpful. This virtual reality experience was pretty cool. It's similar to Oculus or probably most VR systems. You participate in groups up to six and you gear up with your headset, vibrating vest, and four sensors that are strapped to your arms and legs. There are various themes, and we picked Squid Games. They lay out the rules and you have to perform the tasks that they say. One was hopping from glass panel to glass panel, one was dodging lasers, and another was avoiding trap doors. It's pretty fun, but it can get a little dizzying. Also, there's some intensity and we were all sweating at the end of it, so it's best to wear light clothing. 1 Star - Disappointing Experience All Around Honestly, the game itself was fun--but that's about the only positive thing I can say. The headset kept falling off my face, and when we brought it up, no one helped or seemed to care. But the real reason for this 1-star review is the staff's attitude. For the price you pay to play for one hour, you're really getting a one-hour time slot. Setup alone took 15-20 minutes, and during that time, the staff member helping us was rude, passive-aggressive, and completely unprofessional. We visited for my baby brother's birthday, and while I hope he didn't notice, the adults definitely did. The employees seemed like older teens or very young adults, and not one of them showed even a hint of enthusiasm or kindness. The guy assisting us rolled his eyes constantly while explaining how to put on the gear and made us feel like we were a burden rather than paying customers. Even worse, the equipment was disgusting. My headset smelled funky and felt greasy on my face. My sister said the same thing. I watched the woman take our used vests and just hang it right back on the wall--no cleaning, no sanitizing. Not before or after our session. In a place where you're sweating and sharing gear with strangers, that's a huge hygiene concern. Sanitizer wipes or at least a visible cleaning process should be standard, especially for health-conscious guests. After our session, we were sweating and the room was humid and stuffy. No idea if they had AC running--it just felt like a few ceiling fans barely moving air around. On top of that, the game was glitchy and lagged throughout. My buddies and I completed the zombie apocalypse VR and star trek VR, the latter being a total waste. The zombie fight, however, was a lot of fun! The staff will get you geared up with all the necessary equipment that go on your wrists and ankles to get the VR synced up to your body. You'll be able to choose your weapons in the zombie VR, I'd go with something that shoots rapidly since they will be coming quickly in waves. We had a blast doing this as a group hang on a Saturday, definitely a fun experience everyone should try once. This was SO MUCH FUN! David was our host, super friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. As first time players, we were made to feel extremely comfortable. David recommended we switch games as the original choice we made would have split our friend group into 2 vs 2. We spent the day at Oak Brook Center for my daughter's bday. Our plan was immersive gamebox followed by lunch at the cheesecake factory and then mini golf at putt shack. However, when we left immersive gamebox my kids ran into Sandbox and insisted on doing that after lunch. I made a reservation for 1:30pm online, which was easy...and there were lots of options since it was a random Tuesday that they had off from school. My youngest was too little to play (they recommend ages 8+) so he happily went to Build-A-Bear while my 9 year old, 12 year old and 12 year old's friend headed to Sandbox. We chose the pirate option, which they said was best for kids. They said Star Trek is another good option for kids, which they are now begging me to do. I watched from the sidelines as they suited up (takes about 15 min) and then they got 30 min of play time. It was entertaining to watch them in the big green room but also on the screen so I could see what they see. I didn't think this would be that special for them since they have oculus at home, but they said this experience puts oculus to shame....as it should for the $. They absolutely loved it and are begging to go back...like tomorrow. Too bad it's a school day! :) They also did a fun virtual reality birthday experience at the very end for my daughter so it's definitely a great spot to celebrate bdays. We also left with a video of their experience emailed to me, which they love watching. We'll have to go back to Putt Shack soon since we missed it, but have a feeling that will also involve another trip to Sandbox. read more

I had a fun time here! You pay $50 a person for a 30 minute game playing experience. I went in a group of 6 people. We played the Curse of Davy Jones, the pirate game. It was surprisingly intuitive controlling the equipment. Tim was patient, kind, and courteous--he guided us through the experience with a smile. My one critique is that I think for $50 a head, I think the gameplay should be longer. Like 45 min to an hour. I recommend using a map to find the place in the mall before you arrive. It's a really confusing mall and it's hard to find. But it's a novel and exciting experience. read more

Must do! This is my second time trying a virtual reality game and I think this place topped the last one I went to. I went here on a week day afternoon so it wasn't busy at all. The facility is following Covid precautions so we wore our masks while we played the simulation game. All the staff members friendly and made sure to sanitize all equipment that we used. We tried the game Amber Sky 2088, which I'd say is probably the best one. I was screaming the entire time because the game felt so real lol. We wore vest and had sensing devices on our wrists and ankles so whenever the monsters in the game were "attacking us" we actually felt like pokes or vibrations from the vest so that was pretty neat. I think we paid around $40 ish dollars which I thought was worth it. We even got to pose at the end of the game and emailed two videos from the game to keep. This is a fun outing for a group of friends, date night or even a family night too. read more

Our party of 6 had an absolute blast! We didn't have a reservation but the employee was very patient and extremely helpful. We booked and got setup quickly. I asked 3 times (to different employees) if the guns and stuff were charged. I read some reviews and didn't want our game stopped. We did the Deadwood Mansion, I'm not a fan of zombies/anything horror (why scream when you can laugh) but after adjusting I had fun. Having never played on my son's Meta 2 I was blown away at how life like the game was. I wear glasses and didn't have a problem with the headset. Sandbox set the parameters and you clearly see the red line boundary during the game. Initially, I didn't think the cost ($55/pp) matched the time allotted but hear me when I say I was sweating and completely spent after those 30 minutes! Well done. Only minor issue I had was when the sweat slipped past my glasses and I couldn't wipe it but they didn't fog up and distort my vision of the game. Both of our game associates were helpful and made the experience enjoyable. Wish I could remember their names. Highly recommend. We went on a Friday, 4:55pm session. Hardly anyone was there. But leaving out the lobby was packed. It's a little tricky to find. You need to park at Nordstrom, go to the top level and go out towards the outside stores and it's on the left. read more

This place is horrible! We could not find it! we do not live in the area and gave ourselves an extra 30 minutes to find it once we got to the mall.But the joke was on us. First of all. I never received a confirmation email (maybe a location was on that?) On a Saturday afternoon the parking was horrible! Then trying to find the place was very difficult especially with the mall being so crowded. We even tried to call once we reached the mall for a location and no one answered the phone. We were 10 minutes late and told we just forfeited our$171.00 and they don't give refunds. Our reservation was for 1:30 and we were told the next availability was 9:00 p.m. even restaurants give you 15 minutes. Have a map or something on the website! The manager could see we were flustered and absolutely refused to refund our money! If it was $20.00 I could understand but not $171.00 Their system is horrible! As an autistic young adult, I sometimes get worried that places like this will not accommodate. I love VR, it's a lot of fun! But, sometimes it's very overstimulating and I find it hard to find a balance. My boyfriend and I went and played "Dead Wood Phobia," the newest and supposed scariest game they had to offer. As soon as we started, I immediately raised my hand to ask for assistance and the game was paused for everyone else. The game guide came over immediately and assisted me and I explained to them that I get overstimulated easily with sensory things, like the vest that vibrates when interacted with NPCs. They sajd the vest wasnt needed and I could still enioy the game without it. I also asked if there was a way I could have the volume down and they said yes. The person who assisted me explained that they were autistic themself and they totally understand my concerns. They were SO SO SOOOO nice, I don't know their name but they had green streaks in their hair and short-ish hair. It made it feel less like an experience and more like a game, which is what I wanted. The reason I ranked it 4/5 stars was because of actual gameplay. The sensors are a little wonky and my character's right leg and arm kept disappearing. I was given two guns and only one gun worked throughout the game. The other gun would only work sometimes. There were also weird glitches with revival and that caused us to get stuck. We got the bad ending (lol) but it was still pretty fun. We went with a gift card voucher so we didn't pay for anything, but I'm sorry I am NOT paying 117 dollars WITH TAX to play a game that takes 25 minutes to complete. Also, it wasn't really scary. It's marketed as horror and I have extreme anxiety and was laughing at the "scary parts". Overall, I wouldn't recommend going UNLESS you're prepared to only play for about 25-30 minutes for 60 bucks a person. If that floats your boat, have fun!! If not, idk don't go haha. Let me first say that for someone who plays shooter games, this was really really fun. I would do it again. I don't have an Oculus or other at home VR option, so this was really cool and really fun. I was provided a number of texts and emails concerning my reservation, including the very strict time constraint and the need to arrive 10-15 minutes early. I understood, they are on a time schedule, rooms are booked they can't accommodate late comers because it pushed everything back. I appreciated the video link on where to park as well. However, I think the workers need some customer service training. No one was rude, but no one was really helpful either. This was our first time doing this and looking back after the experience, a lot of things could have been explain better. It seemed everyone working had more of a get them in and get them out mentality. Once you get into the game, the game provides some instructions but they are quiet AND we were so enamored with our new VR selves that we were missing key items. The worker could have helped us out instead of letting us sink. The game went down for someone in our party. You will have that with technology, I understand this, the game was paused. But no one explained what was happening. Just a quick, "we are rocking it out hang tight," would have went a long way." Also, with such tight time tables and all the texts and emails I got on arriving 10-15 minutes early, it would have been nice if we got an update that an entire room went down and everything was running behind and although we had a reservation for 2:15, we wouldn't be playing until closer to 3:15. We arrived early for nothing. So, this is a fun experience, they should work in their customer service, and make sure you ask questions. read more

I read some of the other reviews saying it may not be worth it but I say otherwise! As a person who has been to multiple VR locations, I think this was AMAZING. I came from NYC just to try this place out. And it did not disappoint. Though you pick one experience and it is "short" (coming in at 30 minutes) it truly was the perfect time frame. Please note they're critical with lateness. Which is understandable. We told our party to come half hour early even though only 15 minutes is required. The reservation process online shows just how quick booking becomes but it's easy to use and provides all necessary information. So if there are reviews relating to lateness, it's pretty ridiculous because they make you well aware of it. So let me provide a break down: Checking in: You're expected to arrive at least 15 minutes prior for check in and prep. The employees are phenomenal, helpful, and kind. They helped us provide a break down during checking in and made sure to offer us the restroom beforehand. Once our room was being prepared, Ahmed helped us put the sensors on by explaining really well and checking accordingly. He also explained how the game goes, any boundaries, and some details to help with working the VR. VR Gameplay: We decided to go with Deadwood Mansion. Simply put, it was great. The concept was amazing and the guns provided within the game were all different for each player. Each gun provided was chosen by each player in your group. As mentioned, the game itself is noted as 30 minutes which did not feel like it whatsoever. By the end of the game, you are provided with stats and to pose for a picture within the VR experience. Thereafter, you're helped out of the equipment. Not long after leaving (I'd say about 5 minutes) you're sent over two videos that were recording during your time there! The first is your overall experience in the VR experience which shows how it looked for you there as well as the green room you're in. The second one is the pose you did WITH the name and stats from the game. And YES THATS ALL INCLUDED WITHIN THE TICKET PRICE. So is the price WORTH it? Absolutely. The experience is like no other. I'd love to come back just to play the other experience we wanted to do. It's in a great location where right after you can grab something to eat and enjoy the oak brook shopping mall which was clean, refreshing, and ample amounts of stores. I had a chance to come here for a friend's birthday party and the experience certainly didn't disappoint! It's a unique experience and even though I have a VR set at home, being able to play with a group in the same large space was pretty exciting. I was very impressed with the setup and the fun little videos we got at the end. With the group being big zombie-horror fans, Deadwood Mansion nailed it quite nicely and was very high in the fun department. The only reason why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the technical problems. We had issues with mics not working and headsets not being loud enough. Most of this got resolved before the game started, but at one point the game had to stop for everyone because my own headset got disconnected and started flashing a very nauseating loading screen. However, the staff was actually pretty friendly at getting things fixed up and running and honestly didn't see any of the rudeness other reviewers experienced. Maybe they improved on their customer service skills? At $50 a pop though, I hope they reinvest that money to improve their tech. One thing I will say is that it's better to be early than late for this thing as it gives them more leeway to get you in early and hopefully iron out any unforeseen tech issues before the game starts. read more

If I could give zero stars I would but since I can't I'm giving this place one. We made a reservation for 3:45pm and when we arrived at the door it was 3:45pm on the dot however the staff took forever to open the door and by the time they did it was 3:46pm and they said we were late for our reservation and could not play. When my sister was greeted at the door the first employee said "I don't want to deal with this you can deal with this" to the other employee which was very disrespectful and rude to make in regards to us. The other employee then explained that we they "asked" us to arrive 15 minutes before the reservation. Well the reason why we were late in the first place was because they sent us the wrong address in the first place. As you can see in the images the addresses provided to us in the confirmation text and even on this yelp page (as of the time I'm posting this review) is incorrect. The address they provided to us sent us about 15minutes of our the way which delayed our arrival. We ran all the way to the door as fast as possible just so we could make it to our reservation on time, which we did, but by the time an employee opened the door it was 4:46 and they said we were lat When we tried to explain the issue with the address the employee said "we just give you that address to get you close" which makes no sense because the address they sent in the message doesn't take us anywhere near the location of the mall or near Sandbox VR. So instead of apologizing for their mistake and accomoadint us for our reservation because of their mistakes we were told we had to reachedule and come back again. The customer service from the employee who made the rude comment was unacceptable and disrespectful. And the response to their mistake was also unacceptable instead of making a nonsensical excuse they should have apologize for their mistake with the address and accommodate our time for our reservation since we already paid and reserved it. read more

This place is so entertaining that I can go again and again! I've been twice and both experiences where great! I was able to easily book online for $55 per person and was pleasantly surprised to see that they offer time slots all the way up until 10:45pm. This is located in the outdoor mall so even though the mall is closed the Sandbox stays open. The time we choose gave us enough time to do other things without having to rush for our appointment. You also have different VR boards to choose from which makes this cool for younger kids as well. On the day of our Booking I received a call from one of the Sandbox employees saying that one of their rooms was having technical difficulties. Instead of canceling my appointment (which would have been a huge disappointment) they just informed me that there might be a delay on our games start time. Once we arrived and checked in, we didn't have to wait to long for the game to start and that was because the staff was doing an amazing job assisting everyone waiting without making us feel rushed. So I have to send out a special thank you to the two employees that assisted my group. I am so mad that I did not get their names before I left but the gentleman in the picture did an awesome job helping my first time players get geared up! He was professional, funny and had all the patience in the world for these anxious, screaming teenagers. The other employees was a female that sat in the room assisting the girls throughout the game. She used some form of magic to direct the girls and keep them focused after every scream (lol), she also was very professional, and helpful. We booked my 11 year old's birthday party at this location a month before the actual date. And from start to finish, the entire party was a disaster. We had a 4 pm start time booked. When we arrived, we were told they were running "a little behind". That's fine, no big deal. "A little behind" turned out to be 1.5 hours behind. Having to wait 90 minutes with 7 10-11 year olds is no small thing. We weren't told what the wait was going to be either - we first heard "a little behind", then at 4:35 we were told it would be 5:05, then at 5:05 we were told there had been a "problem" in our room and it would be another 30 minutes. I was hoping that once we got into the room that the games would make up for the wait, but the games were beyond buggy as well. Once in the room, it took them almost an hour to get everyone set up to play a game. It was just ridiculous - the equipment didn't work, the program was buggy, things weren't charged. We encountered a similar issue with the second game we had booked, and the second game was even more buggy than the first. We had 3 games in a row booked and were supposed to be done by 6:15 pm. At 8pm, we had only finished two games and we decided to bail on the third because again, they couldn't get it to work and the kids were just DONE. We were given a voucher, which is a terrible business practice because I'm certainly never going back there. I also asked for a refund of the 3rd game that we didn't play, but I certainly didn't receive that. If they were a reputable business, they'd issue a refund on the entire experience because it was just awful from start to finish. read more

We paid for and had a reservation for 4:40 PM and it is now 6:11 PM and we are still "5-10 minutes" away from our turn (they've been saying this for over 30 minutes). This is UNACCEPTABLE! All of the reservation slots around ours were still open, so it is baffling how they could be so behind and not honoring reservation times. Not only were they basically 1.5 hours late, we weren't allowed to leave and get a drink ornl do something else while we waited because they mandated that at least one of our group had to sit there the whole time and wait. They offered a voucher for a future game, but after this why the hell would we return. If I could rate 0 stars I would. Came here for a friend's birthday celebration. Saw that you could bring your own food which is a nice option for celebrations. Our group was split between two rooms, and my room just didn't work. We waited for over an hour for the team to reboot the server, resulting in us only being able to play one game. The tech is definitely cool, but it's clear that staff isn't equipped to handle tech issues. For $50 it's really important to be able to maximize customers time. read more
