I placed an online order from here. Pickup process was smooth with very friendly service. We ordered their Tonkatsu sandwich as well as their KFC sandwich. The Tonkatsu came with a panko crusted pork tenderloin, cabbage, katsu sauce, mild aioli all in between a shokupan. A Japanese milk bread made locally in the suburbs. The pork tenderloin was very tender and flavorful. The cabbage and sauces complemented this sandwich perfectly. But to be honest, the highlight of this sandwich was probably the bread. It was very soft, but dense. Such a perfect bread. The KFC sandwich used the same bread and it came with a double friend chicken thigh, gochujang sauce, pickled cucumbers, and aioli slaw. The chicken was perfectly fried. It had a nice crispy bite to it and very tender and juicy on the inside. Overall a really delicious and filling meal. The Sando (sandwich for those that don't know) were really yummy! Loved the Ube whip cream. I did not think I was gonna to love classic egg Sando but it was so tasty. Japanese Sandos are not easy to find in Chicago. So when Sandos street opened up I knew I had to visit. The inside of the restaurant has a cool funky vibe with art from local artists displayed. I got the ube cream sando and the KFC sando. The KFC sando is amazing, the chicken is crispy and juicy with a little kick from the Gojuchang sauce. The bread is super light and fluffy and the slaw cools everything down. They also don't skimp on the meat at all, you get a really healthy portion size for the price. In some cases ube flavored sweets can be really hit or miss often lacking enough ube flavor. The Ube cream sando doesn't have that problem at all! This is a must try! The fusion of Korean and Filipino is a hit - my friend and I tried the Tonkatsu and the OG Tamago for entrees and the limited edition Yuzu Mango crème. The sauces for the Tonkatsu were amazing the pork was so darn tender. Like it made no sense. You'd think it would be alot of bread but it wasn't bad at all - very soft and not overpowering. The OG Tamago is for all my egg lovers and egg salad connoisseurs. I enjoyed the first two bites however afterwards the spark was gone. The sandwiches did not skimp out on the filling so you won't feel hungry. And they come with a side of sweet potato chips. The Yuzu mango crème sandwich was the best. The Strawberries were so sweet. I think more accurately this would be a 4.5 star review, but I'm bumping it up to 5 because the staff was really nice and good vibes (my friends and I lost track of time while we were yapping away and Sando Street had technically closed but they didn't say anything even though they would have been very valid for politely asking us to leave). Also in general, the staff asked how the food was going and just seemed nice. Between our group, we ordered their seasonal field salad, tonkatsu bowl, matcha cream sando, ube cream sando, chilee pork belly sando, and the musubi sando. I would say the tonkatsu bowl was probably like a 3/5 - like it was decent but nothing amazing or worth going out of your way to get. The field salad was probably one of our group's favorite things ironically, probably five stars. I would say the matcha cream sando was my favorite sando and would describe that as 4.5 stars too - the cream was very light. I split halves with my friend so I'm not sure if I'd want two halves of the cream just because it ends up being a bit sweet, but I loved how light it was. The ube cream sando was similar, but I don't really think I tasted the ube flavor, it was more generally just light cream. I would just do the one if I was trying this place again and go for the matcha. The musubi and chilee pork belly sandos were yummy (maybe 4 stars?), but nothing I personally need to get again. My friend may have liked it more than me. Overall, I'd say we had a nice experience at Sando Street but I personally don't need to go again but think it's worth a visit. My friend also pointed out Phodega used to be in here, and I personally liked the way Sando Street used the space. I haven't had a good Sando in YEARS, so I was super excited to go and try Sando street! First thing's first, the food..... Me & my daughter ordered three sandwiches and split them all so we could get a little taste of everything. - OG Tamago - ($12) I don't think I've had an egg salad sandwich that I have enjoyed more than this one. I'm not sure what seasonings they use, but the flavors are simple, but 100% on point! The soft boiled egg in the middle is a great touch, and the bread is crust-less, soft & fluffy but able to hold the sandwich together well. - Bulgogi - ($15) I'm not going to lie, when I saw the sandwich split down the middle my first thought was that this bad boy needs some more of that bulgogi rib eye.... Once I started eating I can say that the meat to cheese to cabbage to bread ratios were great. Lol, not really. This sandwich was light and creamy. The matcha flavor and sweetness were good without being overwhelming, and wrapped up our Sando experience nicely. All the non-dessert sandwiches come with a side of sweet potato chips. You don't get that many, and for me they were underwhelming, but to each their own. I dipped mine in the kimchi aioli that dripped from my Bulgogi sandwich and worked it out. We went on a weekday at about 11:30-12. The area gets pretty congested, but we were able to find parking on Ashland about a block down (I can't remember if it was free or metered), and walked over. They weren't too busy and we were able to place our orders quickly and get a booth right away. The space is not huge, but clean. Our sandwiches came out in about 15 minutes, so the wait wasn't long. Once we started eating the place filled up fairly quickly. Staff were courteous and fast, and came to check on our table once while we were eating. The price tag is a little high ($60 for 3 sandos, 2 drinks, & tip), but you got to treat yourself sometimes & ultimately I was not disappointed by the flavors Sando Street presented at all! read more

I got the egg sandwich! The bread was high quality, and it had almost an al dente chew. If you've ever seen these kind of sandwiches at Asian bakeries, these approach their apotheosis. However, I was never a big fan of those sandwiches. While the sandwich was good, I probably won't become a regular. So, don't expect these to change what you don't already like. I'll always prefer a bagel with egg salad over an egg salad on white bread. That said, if you ARE a fan of those kind of sandwiches, take the time to try it out! The sandwiches were pretty tasty, they were what I was expecting, the OG Tamago was pretty great, the sad lil side of sweet potato chips had like 6 chips, but they were good enough for me to want to order a side of em next time. Overall Thoughts: I've heard mixed reviews about Sando Street, but to me it was pretty solid. We dined in, and the food took awhile to come out (~30 minutes). At 1pm on a Saturday, it was pretty crowded but we were able to snag an open booth. The vibes inside were simple, clean, and pleasant. There were a lot of people waiting for takeout orders, so if you're doing takeout I'd try to allot for at least 30 min of waiting time. The downside is it's pretty pricey for the portion sizes-- I was still feeling peckish after having one sandwich. However, the food itself was solid: the white bread soft, the inside flavorful. The Korean sweet potato chips on the side were delicious-- so thin, crispy, and bursting with flavor. The portions were so small though, I wish it came with more! Food I tried: OG Tamago Sandwich (4.3/5): This is a classic that didn't disappoint. The egg salad is so creamy and had a good balance of flavors. It paired well with the softness of the bread. Lovely little shop. We split three sandos: KFC, bulgogi, and ube crème. My fav was the KFC which had a perfectly fried chicken thigh covered in a tasty gochujang sauce. Lots of acidity coming from the slaw as well which provided a great balance. Next was the bulgogi which had a great marinade. The addition of the cheese and onions reminded me of a Philly cheesesteak but the Japanese version. Super flavorful and the sweeter of the two savory sandos. The sweet potato chips on the side were fine but I didn't feel the need to eat them. Finally, the ube creme was so light and airy. I was so excited to finally see a Japanese sandwich shop open in Chicago. Unfortunately, I declare this yet another one-and-done endeavor. Service was surprisingly quick, especially after hearing that people have been waiting up to an hour for these sandos. Certainly glad I was not one of those unlucky victims today, otherwise would be a 1-star. The OG tamago was fine and generously packed with their house egg salad; however, it was not by means anything that made me go "oh wow". The shokupan bread was not as pillowy as I hoped it would be, but still decent level of softness. The complimentary purple sweet potato chips were somewhat crispy around the outside and packed adequate flavor, but did not seem entirely fresh. I think they would have tasted a lot better warm. The tonkotsu bowl was mid, with pork cutlet a little dry. The amount of chili aioli drizzled on was so minimal to the point I needed to ask for more on the side, just to add flavor to the bowl that was seriously lacking. Where was the chili anyway? Tasted more of like a Wahl sauce actually. But the bar couldn't have been set any lower with the ube creme sando. Strawberries were old and mushy, appearing to have been hastily thrown on. Zero precision whatsoever in the way they were sliced! And no essence of ube either. Just seemed like vanilla pastry creme with purple food coloring. Also think they may have put rotten bananas or something into the creme?? Whatever lumpy substance it may have been, yuck! The fact that such a place that's been open for mere weeks and already serves spoiled fruit is beyond me!! Bottom line: overhyped and mediocre food. Sando Street kept popping up on social media so I thought it was a sign that we had to try it. We came on a Saturday around 11:30 AM and all of the tables were occupied and there was no seating available for those waiting for takeout orders. We were told that they would expedite our order but it still took about 40 minutes before we got our food. There is also no bathroom inside the restaurant. I had the tonkotsu (panko crusted pork tenderloin, sliced cabbage, katsu sauce, and mild chili aioli served on shokupan) and hubby had the KFC (double fried chicken thigh, gochujang sauce, and pickled cucumbers with your choice of chili aioli slaw or pickled slaw served on shokupan). We wanted to try the matcha creme but they were out of them so we had the ube creme (house made whipped ube cream with strawberries served on shokupan) instead. The sandwiches were good but I wasn't impressed with the shokupan and seemed like regular white bread. The ube creme was fine but probably wouldn't get it again. I don't know what I expected but it seemed lacking in the amount of strawberries inside and they were entire strawberries rather than sliced. We came as soon as they opened so service was quick. Staff at the front was very friendly and able to give recommendations since it was our first time. My wife and I loaded up on the bulgolgi, spam masubi, tonkatsu, and matcha sandos. All sandos, except the fruit, come with a small bag of sweet potato chips. The sando meals I feel are very filling for their price. Great for a quick lunch. I felt as of the spam masubi needed more sauce to really bring in the true spam masubi flavor. Bulgolgi had a thick layer of melted cheese to bring in the gooey flavor pairing with the beef. Chips themselves could use a little more seasoning to make them really pop.
