Food is excellent in taste and it's hot. Call-in orders only. No sit-down but the is usually fast or moderately. I haven't waited more than 15 min at the most and that's unusual. Don't let the loooonng line outside deter you. It moves fairly quickly. I'm not familiar with southern style cooking but my moms companion once lived in North Carolina and would frequent this restaurant often. I plan to return if I ever come back to North Carolina. We dined in on a Sunday morning. They offer a buffet, ala crate, combo meals or you can take out food from the buffet. There was a long line of people in their Sunday's best. We choose to eat at the buffet. The price for the Sunday buffet is $10.99 (all day). Since it was a full house the food was constantly being restocked with hot food items. Some food had labels and some foods didn't. Luckily, my moms companion knew everything that they served and was able to describe how each item is prepared. I tried my best to try a little bit of everything that the buffet offered. My favorite items: Fried Chicken- Moist inside and crunchy and tasty skin. Yeast Bread- I'm glad I didn't see this until the end because I would have filled myself up with this. It came out baked fresh out of the oven. It has a hint of sweetness. Good on it's own but great with the whipped honey butter. Fried Cat fish- it's breaded, flavorful, and moist. Popcorn fried shrimp-I actually prefer salt and pepper shrimp but these little babies were so easy to eats. Just pop it in your mouth. No peeling, getting your hands dirty, no work. Fried pork- I forgot what it's called but its strips of pork, fried to a , and sprinkled with salt. Sweet Tea- Can you really enjoy a southern meal with out gulping down some sweet tea? I made sure I got this drink where ever I went when I traveled on the east coast. I liked Sandpipers version. It wasn't to overtly sweet it was just right and I drank 3 cups of it. Desserts: There was a variety of desserts offered. The pecan pie was good. Nice ratio of pecan and crust. It wasn't overtly sweet. There was sugar free jello which I stayed away from. There was a soft serve ice cream machine that swerved chocolate, vanilla or a swirl of the two. The sweet potato pie was my favorite dessert offered. Service: Despite it being a full house our server was attentive. Kept our drinks full and took away our empty plates. Overall, I plan to return. There was a variety of food offered. A salad bar, fried foods, cooked vegetables, poplar foods that children would enjoy (pizza, Mac and cheese, pasta), freshly baked bread and muffins, and different desserts. My wife and I went through the drive through tonight for seafood. We ordered the whiting plate and the shrimp plate. When we opened the boxes you could tell by the color of the fish & shrimp that it was over cooked. Then when we tasted it, it was very apparent that they had not changed the grease at all. The seafood tasted like dirty oil. We haven't been to Sandpiper in about 5 or 6 years and we wanted to try them tonight for some reason. Lesson learned!!! We will NEVER eat at Sandpiper again. Not sure where to start we ordered barbecue meal and a large shrimp platter Two containers of banana pudding $82.00 The Banana Pudding was horrible! So dry cookies tasted stale bananas where hard as a rock the barbecue is the same it has always been as well as shrimp that the only reason I gave 2 star. Our order was missing items of course we did not check the order at the drive-through until we got home. I did have sticker shock. $82 was with $10 tip I will not be back ! This has been a Mainstay of Fayetteville, NC for many years. It is known to have long lines around the holidays and day-to-day you must be prepared to wait, but it is worth it. Whenever I come to town to visit family, I make sure that this is one of my stops, they offer great portions for great prices. I feel that the Sandpiper defines southern foods with the tasty sides. It isn't bad but it tries to be too many things at once. First, it's a buffet place. Is it a seafood place? Not really enough selection. Is it BBQ? They don't even have vinegar on the table. Is it southern? They don't have Brunswick Stew. It is dark as others noted, needs updating, new paint, more natural light. But it isn't bad. Prices are reasonable. Good selection. All I can say is this place is amazing if you like Southern cooking !! The place was clean, service fast and the price was right!! The buffet had everything you could think of when you think of Southern food! The cabbage was so flavorful as was the bbq ribs. Everything was hot and fresh! There was several varieties of fried fish. Baked fish and chicken was also available. The sides included stuffing, macaroni and cheese, rice, fries as well as the best chicken Alfredo. All I can say is all good things must come to an end. It saddens me to take away 2 stars from 3 years before. Ate there today. The shrimp is reduced to shrimp flavored batter. Lettuce on the salad bar isn't crisp. There costs are still low but "They've lost that loving feeling." With their food. The BBQ that I so loved is served warm. 8-1-2021 Since Covid 19 has us staying at home, we have been ordering food from Sandpiper every Sunday. Today was the first time that I have had to write a review. My order was far from right. I ordered 2 dinners. Plate #1 Turkey and dressing, fried okra, butter beans, and soft roll. Plate#2 Yams, fried okra, dressing, corn and a soft roll. Also I ordered a pint of Banana pudding. Plate #2 came out with 1/2 pint of yams, 1/2 pint of corn, 1/2 pint of dressing, and 1/2 pint of fried okra and a roll that was cold and hard, no tea and and no plastic ware for either one of the dinners. It took about 45 minutes for us to receive our order. So my rating is zero read more

There's just a certain draw when it comes to Southern-style foods I've yet figure out: some called it "Soul Foods," some called it "Comfort Foods"; All I know is if I get a few plates full I can go home and sleep happy. Mind you I'm by no mean a native; or maybe I am since I've now lived in NC for 15+ years. I first moved to the States from Oversea when I was 15 yrs old, but immediately I was hooked on southern foods: that tangy (I've also heard twangy before) vinegar-based sauce with the pulled pork, the sweet cornbread-coated fried fish, the savory bite of collard greens (sometimes with a good chunk of ham hock), the refreshing taste of sweet tea, and most of all, the sweet and rich feeling after devouring a few serving of banana pudding, vanilla wafers included. At Sandpiper, I taste all these. I might be the only one, but there's a certain mood when it comes to eating food or eating out. I believe in eating your food in the right element: I want Chinese elevator music with my General Tso's Chicken, mariachi for my huevos rancheros, and when it comes to southern foods, I appreciate the idea of sitting among the folks who truly appreciate the food you are eating, even if I have to squeeze among the Sunday church goers and brunch folks (yes believe it or not, even "country folks" enjoy a nice sunday brunch, it's not a thing for the high class and elite any more). I appreciate the fact that when I take a nice big spoonful of the banana pudding and making my food-orgasmic moan, I hear the old gentleman in his Sunday's Best says to me "now that's good S**T ain't it?" *Self-note* Next time I stop in town, I have to get some more Sandpiper. read more

This place is pretty good by Fayetteville's standards. I define southern comfort foods as having everything deep fried, buttered, and with lots of salt and sugar. The fried chicken and bbq was some of the best I've had in this region, and you can have as much as you want cause it's a buffet. However, the thing that prevented it from getting four stars is the seafood lean. Having some fried shellfish, popcorn shrimp, and tilapia fillets doesn't make you a seafood restaurant. Yes, they had more than those but not much. Overall, it was nice to have experienced this once before I go. This is a good place to find out how well your gallbladder works. read more
