I hate to leave negative feedback during COVID, but your safety will be in jeopardy if you stay here. If management is to respond to this report, they are only further projecting their irrational responses to a dangerous situation. The hotel's front desk was empty for most of my stay. Normally, after 7 PM, this is not a cause for concern, but two guests became very violent inside their hotel room. At 11 PM, one of those guests climbed out of their window and was yelling vulgar slurs from the roof. Most of the guests called management (which was not on-site) and the police came. The violent guests ran downstairs and blocked the front door. After, they were removed from the property. At no point did hotel management show up. There was no communication with the other guests that "the issue" had been resolved. Therefore, everyone felt like they couldn't leave their rooms because their safety was in jeopardy. The entire situation could have been prevented by hotel management being on-site. The situation lasted for more than five (5) hours. Without a proper resolution, the property put everyone's lives in danger, which is clear because the police showed up to protect the other guests. If you are a single traveler or any traveler, please stay somewhere where management has your safety in mind. The event that unfolded, including the property's outdated facilities and rooms, indicates that management is neglecting to provide a safe environment for their guests. read more

Only good thing about this was the location. Visited during carweek, with price gauging at its best and got zero hospitality. Coming from the east coast I was still on a different time zone- woke up late for breakfast- and saw people still eating, so I asked the lady if I can get a croissant to go. I was told: "I should have woken up earlier. It's 10:45" Jaw dropped. At $700/night I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Will look elsewhere next year. read more

Really one of the closest places to stay if you want to be near the water in Carmel. It's a very well appointed older house that's been converted into a charming inn. We only stayed for one night, they do shutdown earlier at the concierge so make sure you're checked in before 9pm. One important thing to note is that there is no kids allowed in the Inn. A perfect place for adults to get away. The whole place felt very homey and very comfortable. Also not having a television in the room is nice. We had a lovely gas fireplace in the bedroom that was very efficient at getting us in the right mood of relaxation. The shower was good but for some reason it was super loud and we were afraid we were going to wake up the neighbors. Not sure what's going on there but it worked just fine. The breakfast the next morning was very light continental with some yogurt, milk, cereal, and your choice of croissants or a hearty quiche. Of course coffee and tea. Overall good to have breakfast in house since it is a bit far from any restaurants, i.e. you have to go in a car. Apart from all that the fact that you're so close to walk along the beach is priceless and not to mention the billionaire row of houses on Scenic Dr. Which are lovely to behold in the morning light. Its your basic BNB place. The only down fall is no TV but, who goes on a weekend getaway to watch TV? They have a very comfortable bed your own private bathroom and a nice cozy fireplace. This hotel was a huge disappointment. The location is fine, and the setting is great because it is Carmel. Unfortunately, the rooms were tired and dated. There isn't much ambience in the rooms. The biggest problem is the paperthin walls. If you stay here, you will hear everything from your neighbors. You'll hear them get up To go to the restroom. You will hear them talk you were here them turning the pages of the newspaper as they lay in bed in the morning. You will hear everything from the rooms next door. Honestly, I've been around the world and stayed at hotels on many continents. I've never actually been able to hear the goings-on of neighbors quite as clearly as I was able to hear in the Sandpiper. there are so many great inns, bed and breakfasts, hotels and motels in Carmel. Do yourself a favor and skip this one. read more

With a charming staff, magnificent location, comfy warm rooms at a discounted price and great food in the morning, what more could you ask for? Ah, hot strong coffee to go with your early morning walk along one of the most beautiful beaches in California! That's what I'm talking about. Searching for a nice deal on a great location, the Sandpiper was the only place returning my email inquiry with a "can't say no" offer. So we made our selection and were impressed from the moment we stepped through the doors to the open bay with roaring fireplace. To add to the icing on our B&B cake, it was during a morning talk with our innkeeper, Maria, that she gave us two free tickets to the wondrous Monterey Bay aquarium! This won't happen every day but it just reflects how well guests are treated. She didn't have to do this but said it was her good deed of the day, as is my review, in kind. read more

Very cute unique inn! Such a cozy warm environment. We had tea and cookies upon arriving.. we sat next to the warm fireplace while using the WiFi in the main room. Our King size bedroom was very small. Extremely clean but very small. The bed was so comfortable. But the walls are paper thin!!!!!!! It was so difficult to get a good night rest with all the noise. If you're a light sleeper you should definitely stay somewhere else. I heard every single footstep, voice and plumbing! It was actually pretty annoying. I will not be returning. read more

We were very happy with our stay at the Sandpiper Inn. Our room was sparkling clean, and the bed was extremely comfortable. The staff was very friendly and check-in was easy. Breakfast was delicious and filling. This is a good value for Carmel. The inn is located near Carmel Point in a residential neighborhood. The location is extremely quiet. At night we never heard traffic. Although it is not as near the town center as other inns, the town center is very walkable. We enjoyed our several walks to and from town. We really enjoyed our stay here for my birthday. I stayed in room 7 so we could have a view of the water (and hear waves with the windows open at night) and it was perfect. As some others remarked it's on the smaller side, but it's a B&B, not a Hilton. I found we had plenty of room for all the essentials and the closet was nice and roomy. Bed could have been bigger but again--this is an inn. Really nice staff and loved that they had tea and cookies out at night and breakfast in the morning. Great great great experience! Love the guest experience and location of this hotel. Just a block from the beach in a quiet residential area by gorgeous waves crashing onto the rocky coast. Relatively affordable vs pricier downtown Carmel hotels and with more charm. Kemi in guest services helped us squeeze into a just-cancelled room over a busy holiday weekend. She's kind, helpful, and also creates cool seashell-based artwork inside the inn. Make sure to splurge on a fireplace King room if you're going to reserve a room here at all. Anddd... get in here before March 2021 so you can enjoy this grand old 1940s cottage hotel before they renovate over the summer! Thanks to the past and current owners for caretaking this hotel and elevating it to new heights. read more

We absolutely loved this little Inn by the beach. As you walk up to the Inn you are surrounded by beautiful landscaped patio. When you open the front door you were welcomed by the warmth of a fireplace and Sherry and cookies as if to say you are home. The staff where friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and comfortable. We picked room 15 which is one of the studio rooms in the back of the Inn. It was very cozy but exactly what we were looking for. The breakfast in the morning was delicious. The vegetarian quiche was one of the best quiches I've ever tasted. And the apricot pastry was also very tasty. We will definitely be staying here again. read more

Returning back to this charming inn: Quintessential Carmel- My husband and I stayed at Sandpiper Inn on our honeymoon 39 years ago and have been able to come back a couple of times since. This time (May 2019), we brought along my brother in law and sister in law- who have never been there- along. They loved it! Well, these reviews are very misleading. We just spent the holiday weekend here for just an overnight. I like that the website also offers very misleading photography of the location. We ended up upgrading to a cottage and this was so not worth the price we paid ($279 plus tax) for the tiniest cottage I've every seen. Smelled like old mildew and the bathroom had either not been cleaned recently or sanitized for that matter and the room heats up so much it turns into a sauna if you take a shower in the bathroom. All in all, not impressed and would not return to this location. read more

Look, part of this negative review is because I felt completely misled by the Hotels Tonight app, NOT clearly stating that this is "Bed & Breakfast" establishment, which we had never had any interest in going to before or after, and I feel like the pictures are pretty misleading too and show a more modern look than the old fashioned grandmas house that you actually arrive in, complete with the turn-of-the-century smells? Tiny room, paper thin walls, so if listening to people's entire drunken sex sessions are your thing, this is the place? Sure it's close to the water but the windows don't open, so I couldn't try and air out the room or drown out the sound of all the banging going on, doors slamming or old floors creaking? If walking to the water is the only thing you care about, this place is perfect but I wouldn't stay here again if it was free! read more

Stayed here for 2 nights in October 2020 with my boyfriend. We got a room with a queen sized bed and a beachside view. It's a quiet inn with pros and cons. The room was very comfortable and clean. We were thankful for the blackout curtains because we were definitely not morning people. Plus, how relaxing is it to sleep with the sound of the waves? We stayed for 2 nights (it was Monday and Tuesday nights), and I saw a lot of review about thin walls, but neither of us woke up from any excess noise. But also the inn was not packed when we were there. There's quiet time at 10pm-6am so it wasnt too bad, plus, there's no tvs in the room so you can really enjoy the quiet. (Well, quiet until the contruction next door started and we both knew it wasnt the inn's fault that's happening) The firepit was awesome. We hung out there both nights after perusing Carmel. It was a good spot to warm up before going in our room. Now, as for the bathroom, yes it was tiny and our sink was outside in our room. It honestly wasnt too bad in my opinion, it has the necessities and all were working just fine. My boyfriend is 6'4" and he did not complain about it at all. But overall, it was nice and clean, and we didn't have much of a problem with it. I dont think the beach view was worth the extra we paid for tbh. It was blocked by houses and electrical wires. The days we were there were foggy so we barely saw the beach from the windows anyway. We were just bummed out because there's no microwave or fridge in the room and we would've liked to keep and eat our leftovers from the awesome restaurants we went to in Carmel. read more

This bed and breakfast was beautiful and located just a block from the beach. Check in is by 3pm and even though we were running late by 2 hours, they were so nice and accommodating, bringing us a plate of cookies before she left for the day! As this was our first stop on our northern Cali trip, it really made a great impression to have such a warm welcome. Our room was lovely and the mattress comfortable, although the 4-poster frame was a little squeaky (as they usually are). The place is nice and clean. Breakfast is out from 8-10am. There was yogurt, granola, fresh berries, coffee, juice - and if you take a seat, there was a sweet lady who would fix you eggs to order! Really cozy and intimate bed and breakfast. We stayed in the separate cottage room (#14) in the back and it was perfect. The room was small yet cozy. The queen sized bed was super comfortable. We felt like we were sleeping on a cloud. The bathroom shower is small but it does the job. The skylight was a bit jarring in the morning when we wanted to sleep in, but we were excited to wake up to the delicious complimentary breakfast which they serve in the main room from 8am - 10am. The nice old lady asked if we wanted quiche or croissant and we both went for the ham and cheese quiche. It was very delicious! We sat at a table next to the windows and very much enjoyed ourselves. Parking here was no problem, about 30 minute walk to town, and it was only a minute walk to the Carmel beach. We took a nap and woke up to watch the sunset. We both loved our stay here! read more

There is breakfast daily with amazing quiche made fresh :) the rooms and beds were a bit small and there wasn't a parking lot, but street parking is easy enough to find. Very cute place! Great great service! I picked a room with a bit of a view of Pebble Beach (where my dream lover - Chris O'Donnell was playing that weekend.. sigh). Very romantic. I romanced myself like crazy here (and no dirty thoughts yelpers!) I had ordered my cheesecake to go at dinner and ate it by candlelight in the bath tub. I read and drank wine, and stared out at the ocean and the stars. I wrote in my journal and thought about life, I dreamt of Chris O'Donnell ickling me to sleep (definition of an ickle - almost tickle, lightly running the tips of fingers along body). It was pure magic. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a romantic, slightly off the beaten path place. Definitely print out your directions (the streets are confusing) and make friends with the people at the desk. The girl who checked me in was sooo nice and helpful. Recommended lots of places for dinner, things to do, people to see. She even loaned me toothpaste and a fireplace match for my candlelit bath. read more

I've been here 3 times. It's cozy, the breakfast is delicious (quiche, granola, yogurt, juice, coffee, tea), and it's very close to the water and you can hear the ocean at night. On the downside, the walls are paper thin, the water can't maintain heat (if anyone else flushes a toilet or turns on water, you'll yelp as the water goes super hot or cold without warning), and you have no control over the heat in your room. It's central heat, so if you are near the furnace, you'll be sweating and opening the windows, and if you are far from the furnace, let's just say that we bring our own electric blanket. If you score a garage-converted room and don't have to share walls, then you have a skylight directly over your bed. It's romantic to see the stars at night and jarring to awaken when the sun does in the morning. Also, the innkeeper, who serves the breakfast, is a bit of a snot. She prefers to give you the quiche she picks for you rather than the one you select, and is just a bit snippy in general. read more

Pros: It was one of the least expensive B & B walking distance to the beach. maria (the innkeeper), & Janelle (front desk) are really great. Many thanks to Donna the lady who booked us..she was kind enough to allow my 3 year old to stay there only cuz we had room 15 (i think thats the #) that is detached from the main building. The room itself was not bad despite it is really older type decorating. The flowers were gorgeous! And they are everywhere. The dining room & outer landscaping are so amazing, actually all of carmel-by-the-sea is like that. It is so romantic & peaceful. the food during breakfast is awesome if u try the quiche..try the ham & chs..WOW!!! it is cooked by an offsite cook though, Maria explained to me. It really is like a home-away-from-home. The room we had room 15 has a wonderful sky light. The bed was okay even though it creaked during the night if you say..moved it real rough (use your imagination), but that was kind of funny. The heater worked really well, u wouldnt wanna leave it on though of you went out for a bite, it heats up real quick since the room is so small. The location was awesome. You really could walk to the beach. If you are sitting on the patio or right outside your door, you can hear the ocean waves. It is a brisk walk to fancy downtown (maybe even a slow jog). Scenic drive. also walking distance, lines homes priced in the millions..even in the 20 millions as one resident told me...it really is a sight to behold. Definately a wonderful romantic place to create another baby or get engaged. If i stay again i would like to try room #14 the linens were so cute in there!!! U gotta look at sandpipers website..it has pix to view. CONS: The windows are not modern, so not double paned. If you leave the bathroom door open in room 15 it will get cold at night. And if you even dare use the bathroom at night in the month of Septmber at least, you'll freeze your privates. So turn on that red light heater, itlll keep your bum warm..its wonderful even during showers. The dresser in room 15 smells funny..u dont want to open it too often. The carpet could use a wash although it wasnt a huge deal. We were barely in there any way. It looks like the outside of the building could use a little re-touching but again not a real big deal. I was so busy being in love iwth all the flowers abundant everywhere. All in all I would definately go back to carmel...but next time I will bring a kite & my doggie. No pets are not allowed @ this one, but there are many others that do allow guest pets. read more

Stayed here for one night while on our way to Oregon. Staff was friendly and service was good. We stayed in the far right cottage in the back which had this cute little window to look at stars at night. Unfortunately we were too tired to stay up but thats okay. The beach is just a jump and a skip away. AND you can hear the beach from your room in the morning. There is free parking and complimentary breakfast. We had organic yogurt with berries, vegetarian quiche and coffee. We were happy campers. We would definitely stay here again. We enjoyed dinner and wine tasting downtown and enjoyed a drink on the beach while listening to waves crash. It was beautiful. read more

I would give this a TEN if I could. We stopped here thinking we were going to a motel. This is a Bed and Breakfast with super affordable rates. Very clean and perfect location. We walked to the beach everyday. Also walked to the Carmel mission. The amenities here were really nice. Fireplaces in a few common rooms and an outdoor firepit. This place was so cute and romantic. My boyfriend took me here and warned me that there was no t.v. I thought it was going to be weird... but it was well worth it! When you drive up to the Inn, it looks like a huge house, parking lot was a drive way. As we walked in there was a living room and snacks, tea, coffee, and other little things. The nice lady showed us to our room, which had a little fire place, with a queen size bed. I felt so homey and warm here. We grabbed a bottle of wine and snuggled to fire place and listened to ocean all night. In the morning they had breakfast served and later walked downtown and to the beach. I loved this place... and will recommend anyone that wants a romantic getaway. read more

Very sweet people at the desk, the place is super cute and homey. Walking distance from ocean ave. I love their quiche and croissant breakfast, it was delicious. We had the king size bedroom with the big bathroom so we were lucky. Room was clean, smells good, bathroom is very clean and good size. We definitely recommend it. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because there was loud bangs on the ground or I don't know from where that were shaking the whole building in the morning and woke us up. The husband brought me here for Valentine's Day and I loved, loved, LOVED IT! He definitely scored some major points this past weekend! When he called Sandpiper Inn to reserve a room, he said that the staff was super friendly and worked out a great deal with him. He reserved Room C, which was a cottage behind the main inn that was not attached to any other room. You had to walk through their little garden area in order to get to the front door. The cottage was so adorable! All the decor matched, and it had a couple skylights to really bring in some nice natural lighting into the room. I've always wanted to go to a B&B and am definitely spoiled after coming here. I loved the decorations in the dining room, and their breakfast was quite tasty as well! It was just such a relaxing stay, and it was amazing how close we were to the ocean. If you want to get away from the busy city life, I highly recommend checking out this B&B. The time during the day definitely slows down, and you feel nothing but relaxed and rejuvenated! read more

The walls are paper thin, we could hear all the chatting and the commotions early when breakfast starts. This is an ADULT ONLY place where no guests under 18 are allowed. Is this supposed to geared towards couples? but there was so little privacy. The ladies who serve breakfast had very bad attitude, and their service was appalling. i was standing outside of the kitchen, the ladies walked by me in and out of the kitchen a few times without greeting me, as if i was invisible. Then finally, as more guests waited around, one staff said "just take a sit and someone will bring you your breakfast". She looked like she was annoyed. Breakfast is semi self-served, the things they put out are coffee, juice, yogurt, berries, and granola. You have to sit down at the common area, and then they'll bring you quiche or Costco croissant. Wouldn't it be more convenient for guests who are in a hurry to just grab food and go? For the price they charge, why are they so stingy on food? We got so fed up with this place that we skipped breakfast, and checked out. read more

Beautiful, charming little inn elegantly decorated and romantically intimate. Don't come expecting an elite hotel fancy smancy. It is classic and a vintage cottage feel. Every room appears to be different with differing features but tastefully and elegantly decorated: beautiful ocean view vs garden view, some with fireplaces, some queen beds and others king beds, some rooms larger than others. Check the website; it is pretty accurate. Take your pick. Ours was #5. Corner king room with an ocean view out of two corner windows. I was almost in a panic to find no tvs in the rooms during Olympics week but decided that wasn't the reason we were there plus if you MUST watch a show, there is a shared tv in the living room. There is wifi so bring a laptop with wifi and you should be able to watch movies to your hearts content. And... A plus: a love seat or double chairs instead a single chair like is typical! Doesn't that make more sense for a romantic getaway? Breakfast is not a typical continental groan; it is a full spread of pastries, granola, yogurt, fresh fruit, quiche, juice, coffee, tea, etc. You will not leave hungry. The innkeeper is simply a sweetheart and she will make you feel cared for. Feel free to keep food in the kitchen fridge and help yourself to the kitchen dishes if needed. Warm up by one of two cozy fireplaces in the public areas (one in the living area and one in the foyer). Borrow a book from the library. Tea and cookies on weekend afternoons. Extra amenities are available upon request (hair dryers, etc). Cozy up in the evening next to the outdoor fire pit. The beach is about block away with a gorgeous expansive view! The city center is a short 2 min drive which to us was a positive making it a quiet little getaway. This is the perfect quaint little place to stay while visiting Carmel. read more

We were one of many families in the area that were evacuated from our home due to the California wildfires that were started by a huge lightening storm on Sunday August 16th, 2020. Local hotels in Monterey started filling up fast as thousands were displaced, and hotel rates started increasing quickly as demand for rooms skyrocketed. This felt very wrong to us that hotels were taking advantage of people displaced by fires. After a few days of moving from hotel to another, we learned through a news article that the Sandpiper Inn was offering discounted rates to families that were forced to evacuate, and we were lucky enough to be able to secure a room there at a very reasonable price. When we arrived at the lobby, Kemi treated us like family and the Inn immediately felt like our home away from home. Our room was clean, spacious and comfortable and had a nice fireplace which we decided not to use given our personal situation. There is a spacious and comfortable common area next to the lobby where guests can relax and watch TV, read, or enjoy take-out food from one of the many local restaurants in Carmel. There is also a beautiful fire pit outside with comfortable seating where we listened to the ocean waves and enjoyed a glass of wine before heading out to dinner. The Inn is located one block off Carmel Beach and about a 20 minute walk to the downtown area with plenty of parking for guests. The Sandpiper Inn is a class act and we will recommend this location as the perfect place to stay for family and friends who come into the area for a visit. Thank you Sandpiper staff and ownership for doing the honorable thing when other hotels were taking advantage of people. You have won our friendship and our loyalty forever. Beware of this location. Specifically room #18. Pros: My initial impression was good. We walked in and were checked in by a nice woman. She explained all the details we needed to know. Your stay includes a continental breakfast. We didn't use this provision since we like to go out for breakfast. Cons: All went down hill when we entered the room. The room had a strong musty smell as if the room had been damp and never aired out. I opened the windows and let it air out while we went to dinner, this seemed to help. The room was very out dated with paint missing and the towel bar about to come off. The mattress was very uncomfortable because you could feel the springs and when my husband rolled over he would wake me up because the bed and mattress had very little support. There is no iron in the room which is not a good thing for me, I hate wrinkled clothing. Now here is the worst part ever: there is a skylight above the bed. Do not plan on sleeping in! Wonderful little place to stay. When I say little, I mean that. This isn't a normal hotel that I'm used to, it's a cozy inn. Our room wasn't too big, but we were aware of that coming in since their website displays pictures of every room. The host was very nice and checked us in promptly. It was very clean and well decorated. They have tea time with cookies and breakfast with quiche and pastries. The inn is a 25 minute walk from downtown, but it's nice to be farther away from the city. It's very quiet area. read more

My husband and I stayed at the Sandpiper Inn when we visited the area in February. It was a bit hard to navigate the Carmel residential neighborhood because there are no street lamps. Once you turn into the street though, it's lit up pretty well. We got a king size room on the first floor. The bed was nice and huge, but the room was small and tight. The bathroom was small too. There was no TV in the room - we didn't need it since we were on an 'active' vacation, but just had to point it out because some people like having certain amenities. On to wonderful things: if you leave the windows open, you can wake up to the sound of crashing waves, as the ocean is just a block away. In the morning, head to the common area for some organic granola, quiche and some yogurt. This was more than sufficient for us. Then take a nice, short stroll to the beach nearby. In the afternoon, they serve tea and cookies. What a perfect location. It's very nice and quaint. My only negative experience is this: five months later I was planning our wedding. We loved it so much that we wanted our small group of family and friends to stay at the Sandpiper. The manager was very difficult to reach. She had quoted us some pricing but when I e-mailed and called to discuss, she never responded. So we ended up staying at a larger hotel in Monterey, which actually turned out for the best. But still...we couldn't believe she would turn down a business opportunity. read more
