I do recommend that everyone try out Sandra's Tamales if you've never been here before. I have been evaluating Tamales wherever I can find them from East LA to Texas and the one thing that I've noticed is that there's been a degradation of quality over the past decade. It seems like when abuelita passes away and the grandkids take over the restaurant they start getting a little skimpy on the internal ingredients. Less meat, less sauce and more MASA which is somewhat of a downer.

Drove here from Torrance on a Saturday morning. There was a line out the door but it didn't take more than 10 minutes to get to the front to place our order. We come here for and have only tried their tamales. And, we love them! Moist, with soft tender shredded protein (choice of pork, chicken, beef), generous portion of sauce, oh and delicious!! Our go to is the red beef tamales. I've never really craved tamales but ever since my husband introduced me to these tamales (mind you the old name was Sandra and Lolita's but I guess Lolita left and now only Sandra remains) back in the early 2000's, every time we're back in Los Angeles we always try and make a stop here to pick a few up! Masa / sauce / protein ratio is perfect. Masa isn't dry; it's actually moist. The flavor of the tamale as a whole is spot on but the beef and pork is always so tender! They provide you with a plate and fork if you choose to eat these the minute you get into the car so you can experience these tamales hot and fresh! Oh, and they'll give you lime wedges as well!!

I CAN NOT GET ENOUGH OF SANDRAS TAMALES!! Ever since I was introduced to sandra's tamales by an old friend of mine who lived in culver city, he would brag about how good these tamales were. Granted living pretty far away I thought he was crazy for making that drive really early in the morning since the business opens early. He would mention there was a huge line in the morning and at times they would sell out. Out of curiosity I decided to go one time back in 2014 and I been going ever since!! They have gain many loyal customers because of the taste and quality of the food. They offer chile rellenos and different style of tamales. My favorite is the queso with green sauce. It's priced at a reasonable amount and they also accept cards/apple pay. I always bring cash regardless tho. This is a small place so it's to go only with a small parking lot in the back. You can always ask for utensils/cutlery which they provide for you at no cost so you can eat in the car. They also sell buñuelos and the best champurrado i've ever had. I love to y tell people in the west side to come try these tamales in East LA bc they are worth the drive.

I love Tamales. But I've only ever loved one other kind and it's the way my great grandma made them. It's so hard to come by tamales that are moist and not full of masa only. I tried the red pork my family ordered the cheese. Friendly customer service, and there was no line which is what I was worried about. We walked around back and sat on the floor to eat our tamales lol. One of the works came out and asked if we needed anything and brought more napkins for us, instead of asking us to leave which was really nice of him. Can't wait to go back. My picture is not the greatest but I couldn't wait to eat

It's tough seeing the critiques from both old and new Sandra's customers in the reviews considering how seamless my experience was as a first-timer. I had never had a "wet" tamale before, so I was interested to see what the diehard fans were so defensive of and what the critics were so eager to deride. Their storefront is a quickly revolving door of customers - walk in, order at the counter, they bring out your tamales, you leave, you come back again. Came in at 8:45 AM on a weekday for breakfast and picked up 7 tamales for myself and family, and they had everything except for the chili verde chicken tamales (which I was super excited to try). I was helped by a very peppy staff member who was thankfully very patient as I hemmed and hawed over which flavors to try. The red chili beef, which the employee mentioned was their most popular one, was absolutely delicious: moist, tender, and flavorful. I really enjoyed how the sauce and masa (which was very well-apportioned) interacted not unlike naan and curry, keeping it from being too dry while acting as the perfect vehicle of flavor. The green chili cheese was also a winner with the perfect level of spice, as was the red chili pork. I will say they're impossible to eat without making a massive mess, but it's a small price to pay for what you get. Hopefully the quality stays the same for my next visit because I would absolutely make the drive.

Corn tamale has so much flavor, and moist! A must try

What is so great about this place that everyone is waiting for them to open?

They make the best tamales. But, they are definitely not for everyone. If you like your tamales wet, go to Sandra's. If you like your tamales dry and sh-tty, go to lilianas.

Are there vegetarian options (lard free)?

that's a silly question. all tamales are made with lard. unless you like that west side shit stuff.

At least a day in advance

What are the prices by the dozens?!

Tamales are in high demand during the holidays so they do cost more. But, you can purchase uncooked tamales for $1 to $2 less per dozen. I freeze them to serve whenever I want to eat tamales. I cook DEFROSTED tamales for 30 minutes and let them… Read more

Do they sale just the masa?

Now when you pull up originally you might think, "am I in the right place" but once you park and get into the courtyard, it is LOVELY! Amazing ambience! There is a bocce set up, string lights. It is a little slice of oasis in the middle of the fashion district. The restaurant itself - beautiful. I couldn't ask for more. Absolutely perfect in my book. Beautiful plants hanging, perfect Spanish music in the background (any place playing Natalia LaFourcade is a win). The drinks were great! I had the jungle bird which was fun. Food was so good too. The whipped beans are the star! We had the guacamole which was tasty, great tostadas with it. The arepas were good but the pork belly was a little too fatty (I know pork belly is always fatty) to the point the fat muted the flavored for the arepa a bit, but still delicious. The empanadas were great and as someone who lived in South America and ate empanadas every day, these really took me back to my Paraguay days. The squash blossoms were light and perfectly fried. Unfortunately my friends had gone to Funke the night before so they were comparing the squash blossoms and Funke won out, but they still liked Dama's! Small plates were enough for the 3 of us. The service was quick and attentive. Parking was easy for us. I will definitely be back!

The staff are lovely humans who really seem to care about their customers. We have some faves on the menu. The bean dip is fabulous and I'm addicted to the baby gem salad. They have recently amped up the filling in the delicious crispy squash blossoms and I love the acidity and heat. The fish is also a hit in my books. One dish that doesn't work for me is the lamb chops, which is a shame since it's my favorite protein. I've ordered them multiple times with clear instructions on temperature and have found them overcooked and tough. The beef tostada was just ok. Whilst I loved the pickled veg on the side, the beef was underseasoned. It wasn't bad - just not up to the standard of other dishes. The vibe in the place is welcoming and the restaurant is nicely appointed. We will continue to be regulars and it's really worth trying if you haven't been yet.

Located between Koreatown and Pico-Union, this restaurant delivers an outstanding dining experience from the moment you're seated. My wife and I both ordered the Mole Coloradito with chicken, and it was absolutely delicious. One detail we really appreciated was being able to choose between white meat or dark meat--a thoughtful touch that lets you customize your meal to your preference. The mole was rich, complex, and full of flavor, exactly what you would hope for from a restaurant known for its Oaxacan specialties. As a welcome appetizer, they bring fresh chips and salsa to the table, but what really impressed us was when they replaced the salsa with their incredible mole sauce. It was so good we found ourselves dipping everything into it. Both meals were served with rice that was perfectly cooked with a great consistency and flavor. For those feeling adventurous, give the Chapulines (grasshoppers) a try. They may sound intimidating, but they were surprisingly enjoyable and added to the authentic experience. The staff was exceptionally friendly, attentive, and patient with those of us who are not fluent in Spanish. Their hospitality made us feel comfortable and welcomed throughout our visit. I browsed the menu and had a really hard time deciding, but ended up on the cauliflower rajas taco, the crispy shrimp taco & the vegan Korean BBQ taco. The waiter recommended the crispy shrimp taco, but I actually enjoyed the vegetarian tacos more. I love cauliflower and poblano so that taco was a great starter. So much flavor and a variety of textures. The tortillas were super flavorful too. The potato taquitos came next and I am actually obsessed. The outside was perfectly crispy, the interior was soft, flavorful & cheesy. The sauce complimented it perfectly. I can not recommend them enough. The crispy shrimp taco was really good, but I also tried a crispy fish taco and would honestly get that over the shrimp. I think there was mango or something in the coleslaw of the fish taco because it had a really nice fresh flavor to it. Last, I had the vegan Korean BBQ taco. The mushroom shreds & the flavor were just perfect. Again, as a pescatarian I have really never had Korean BBQ because it's so heavily meat focused. I truly loved this taco.
