Since the salon is located in Downtown Redwood City, there will not be any free parking as everything is metered street parking - Bring some quarters. Spruce Salon is taking every Covid-19 precaution possible - Only a limited number of stylists are allowed to work at a time {with chairs more than 6 feet apart}, each stylist is only allow to service one client at a time, both the stylist and the client must wear a mask the entire time and a temperature check is given prior to entering the salon. All of these procedures made me feel super comfortable in being in a salon again. My husband has been going to Spruce for years for his haircuts and raved about Nicole, so I decided to give her a shot when going in for a full highlight and a haircut - I am beyond thrilled to have found Nicole - She is a Hair Genius! I am a very easy going person and my hair is the one thing that I can tend to get picky about so I usually go into a salon with several pictures of what I am looking for {and as someone who previously managed salons/spas for years and years, I know this can be a stylists nightmare} - Nicole was amazing and looked through all of my pictures and I put my trust in her to see my vision - She exceeded what I was looking for 10 fold! Booked the same day and I asked for a haircut. I had a previous hair stylist and bleach done elsewhere, so my hair is very damaged and dry-- I got a trim, layered cut, and blow dry by Ellie! Overall, it was such a great experience! Ellie M. is the best! for haircuts and learning so much about it your hair's needs and what can be good for you! The last time, I showed her multiple pictures of what I wanted with my bangs, and it came close after I asked her to thin them out more after her initial cut. However, she also recommended thinning out the rest my hair to remove some of the weight to give it more movement and assured me that she won't remove too much. I wanted to retain that smooth U-shape in the back. It looked terrible after the first wash. She thinned my hair in a way that caused all the ends to flip up in random directions, NOT the look I was going for. None of the layers blended into each other. I wound up tying my hair up for the entirety of my three-week trip abroad because it looked so bad. Seven weeks later, and I'm still growing it out. My hair actually looks pretty damaged, even though it's not. Super disappointed.

I told her I wanted a…read moretrim, and because I have very thin and fine hair, I didn't want layers since I'm trying to maintain as much volume as possible. She suggested long layers, which I thought just meant adding some subtle layering near the ends. So I agreed but emphasized that I wanted very minimal layers. She ended up thinning out my ends and making my hair look thinner and scraggly. The ends honestly looked like I hadn't gotten a trim in 6 months, which was what I had done and my hair looked better going in than when I came out. I told her that she thinned my hair out too much with the layering and she did not offer any apology, solutions or to try and fix it. During the haircut, she sprayed the spray bottle directly in my face, which added to the already uncomfortable experience. Overall, the entire experience left me feeling really disappointed and cheapened. The following day, I ended up getting my hair fixed at a different salon, and the new stylist was able to show me how unevenly my fringe pieces had been cut. I'm disappointed by the lack of communication and that my concerns about my fine hair weren't taken into account.

Whether it is a full highlight fresh for summer, or cutting it a bit shorter than usual and adding tons of layers she is up for the challenge. The owner Amy always greets me with her welcoming smile and checks in on me during my visits. Such a sweet and friendly atmosphere adds to the charm of this place.
