Dr Fung is nice and reasonable, and has always been supportive to me and her patients. She spends the necessary time with each patient and doesn't make you feel rushed. Though she is frequently harried or frayed herself due to how busy she is. However, her receptionist Karen, as depicted in many of the other reviews, is uh... colorful... and something to behold. She can appear approachable and compassionate one moment and in another moment she will rip you a new one. It depends on whether you catch her in a mood or not, and if the office is especially busy. On the plus side, she does seem to get things done if something needs to be communicated to Dr Fung. However she does often makes you (along with everyone else in the waiting room) fully aware of what an imposition it is for her to do so, and quite loudly. As someone with a newly diagnosed chronic disease of a serious nature, alongside the stresses that come with it, I definitely hit an impasse with her when she tore me a new one for some administrative confusion. I can't deal anymore with her mood swings--whether my next call will be answered by Jekyll or Hyde. I no longer have room for this kind of verbal and emotional assault in my life, especially from my primary health care provider office. I should not feel bullied, nor should I be made to feel trepidation for making a call to her office for a necessary medical request. So sadly, despite Dr Fung being quite easy going and a good doctor, I will be looking for a new primary care physician. I do wish Karen the best. Perhaps she's bipolar or on the spectrum or just stressed beyond awareness. My whole family has been seeing Dr Fung for years now. Dr. Fung is the only doctor I am willing to drive all the way from Queens to the city to see. She is always so professional, approachable and patient. I was never rushed. She is very knowledgeable and uses simple Laymans term to explain the condition. The only downside is the wait! It is common to wait for three hours, with or without appointments. She only accepts appointment on workdays, no appointments accepted on Sunday. She is closed every Thursday and Saturday. During weekdays, you can still wait 2 to 3 hours even with an appointment. Walk-in are slotted between appointments. As a result, even you have an appointment, you are never seen on time. We went on a Sunday 8:50 am when office opens at 10 am. We were the second one on line outside the office. By 9:20 am there were 7 people. By 10:00 am there were 17 people. Dr Fung takes 10-15 min each patient. Go figure. For the receptionist Karen, she is stressed due to great amount of work. She is reasonable if you ask her politely. Sandy Fung is a great doctor and I've been seeing her for many years. On the other hand her receptionist is extremely rude and condescending! She lacks communication skills and tries to lecture you about everything irrelevant. She has no respect for Dr. Fung's patients and screams at patients to "sit down," whenever they tried to ask a question. I switched my insurance and didn't know I have to declare my primary doctor. The receptionist told me I had to call my insurance and it would take 24 hours for it to be effective. I left the office, made the call, and the representative said the change was effective immediately. So I went back to the office to notify the receptionist and was able to see the doctor. Why do you think it's okay to waste patient's time, give them false information and have them come back another day? I'm at the doctors office because I don't feel well, do you think I want to come back another day, when my insurance is active/eligible? If this is something the receptionist is unaware of, then she should take note and stay on top of new changes and policies so she doesn't waste patient's time. My insurance didn't cover one of my prescription so the pharmacist tried to get in touch with the office for the doctor to prescribe another medication. I waited at the pharmacy for an hour and a half. When I called the receptionist, she was extremely rude and said, "just wait a little longer!" And hung up on me. I think for the most part, most people will experience speaking with the receptionist - Karen. I hear some people say good and bad things about her but for the most part my experience with her has been good. She does have a tendency to talk and ramble, but she is a friendly person! The office here is small and there is typically a 1-2 hour wait time if you don't schedule ahead of time (3 weeks in advance minimum). But after you get into Dr. Fung'a office you'll see that you have a amazing experience with her because of her friendly personality and medical expertise! I was very excited to see a doctor with great reviews, but was treated with so much condescension for the times she stated were available, coming in 30min early, getting my insurance vetted. It was insane given how simple the procedures for scheduling a new patient appointment was. She's actively pushing away business. Front desk lady was extremely rude and unprofessional. I called their office twice to verify insurance the past week. She never mentioned that she needed the physical insurance card without a PCP name on it. I took the day off from work to do annual visit and the front desk lady refused to accept my insurance card with PCP name on it. Attempt to provide an email or a fax or show her my ID card on my phone but she refused to accept it. That lady was loud and required me to provide a physical card without the PCP name on it and embarrassed me in front of a dozen patients. My insurance doesn't require an assigned PCP. Amazing doctor! The wait time is a bit long since she's quite a popular doctor among not only the elderly Chinese residents but also among younger ABC residents of NY. Either watch some Hong Kong variety show or drama while you wait OR you can schedule an appointment and as long as you walk in before that time, she'll (try) to see you right then and then (regardless of the amount of people in the waiting room) OR you can get there early (at least a good 2 hours before the office opens) and get in line with all the other early risers who want to get their doctor's visit out of the way. I attribute the LOOONNG wait to that she's just that awesome of a doctor. She takes her time with each patient and will never be rushing you out of the door. She's really friendly and understanding and willing to listen to whatever you have to say. Can I say that she makes flu shots seem less painful? Haha, well she sure is fast in administering it which is assuring for a person afraid of needles (maybe me). She makes sure to explain everything to you and that you understand. Dr. Fung and her receptionist are the best! From my own personal experience, I can say the receptionist is really friendly and tries to get to know you on a personal level. Dr. Fung is thorough and understanding! She quickly understood what I needed and addressed all of my concerns. In the past, I had visited doctors who were either unhelpful or alright. It is really hard to find a good doctor and I'm glad there is someone like Dr. Fung and who will take your insurance. I was referred to this Dr. from a coworker and saw the mixed reviews. all the negative were due to rude, unprofessional, and arrogant receptionists. Yes, plural. I feel a little bad about blemishing Dr. Fung's perfect 5 star rating but it's an honest opinion. This rating is not a judgement on Dr. Fung's ability to diagnose or any other medical abilities. Dr Fung is a nice Doctor that's willing to listen to your concerns, tries to answer your questions, and will check you up, but her office needs to organize better and I'd hate to say it but it may be necessary to turn away some people and to have them come back another day. She welcomes walk ins and due to her overwhelming popularity the wait time is insane. Walk ins can wait upwards to 2-3 hours on average and if you can wait then thats fine, but due to the sheer amount of patients, scheduled or otherwise, it cuts into the quality of time and attention given by the doctor even if it's unintentional. I don't know if it is normally this busy every day but when I went, the Doctor seemed extremely rushed from patient to patient to the point where I was concerned for HER health and wondering when does she even have time to eat. She also seems really quick to refer you to a specialist, I mean I wouldn't mind hearing her opinion first since I came specifically to see her. I'm not sure if that was due to her being so rushed and that given enough time she would be able to focus more but thats what I presume. If you are going to experience so many walk ins, have the office compensate by scheduling less people for each day. read more

Let me count the ways: she listens, asks insightful and relevant questions, knows her practice, does not horse around, and cares. I was lucky to go on a light day this past Wednesday, and only waited half an hour. She stayed with me for an undiluted ten to fifteen minutes as I walked her through my cold,and ankle problems. I've been going to Dr. Fung for over 20 years now. She is an excellent doctor. Extremely articulate, yet soft spoken and polite. Explains everything in detail in Layman's term that I can understand. Prior to visiting, I used to go to Dr. Eng (who retired in the 90s and sold the practice to Dr. Fung). Dr. Eng was an awesome doctor as well. I wasn't too thrilled about having a new doctor at the time. But I gave Dr. Fung a chance and I'm so glad I did!! Just to show you how much I like Dr. Fung, I still go to her for my annual exams (blood work) after I moved out to NJ!! I had my bloodwork done this past weekend. Within 2 days, after the results came back, her staff called me to tell me the results and recommended what I needed to do (lifestyle changes) to upkeep my health. Solid A++ in my books!!! I was told by my mother that if I went to Dr. Fung's this past Monday, yes that rainy Monday, that I would only have to wait at most, 30 minutes to be seen... Well, my mother is a liar. I don't know what it is about the combination of rain and Mondays, but the elderly made it their mission this past Monday to visit Dr.Fung! I strolled into the office thinking max, 5 people would be there. I was wrong - there were about 10-13 people! There weren't even enough seats that people had to wait outside in the hallway! Thankfully, I had all the time in the world on Monday so I didn't bother waiting (plus, I was a walk-in). The office has a TV which they put hilarious Chinese game shows on for patients to watch - stuff you probably watched when you were a kid if you were raised by traditional Chinese parents (Jurng muy yun and Beautiful Cooking). Dr. Fung is super attentive and doesn't treat her patients like an assembly line or dollar signs. She listened to all my problems, even gave me a referral (!!) to go a radiology place for the pain I've had in the past 2 weeks and I wasn't even charged my $20 copay! She even managed to give me a PPD test, which I needed and gave me an appt to come back and check it. Super convenient location, as the place to get your bloodwork is across the hall, unlike Quest Diagnostics on Mott St. With that said, I waited for 3 hours on this rainy Monday. Yelpers, if it's raining, you should probably call and ask how many patients are already there - the receptionist is super nice. Also, Dr. Fung's office is on 17 Elizabeth Street, not 13! I love Sandy. I really shouldn't write a rave review about her because the more patients she gets, the longer the wait to see her. She accepts walk-in patients and appointments, though sometimes, the sign-in list trumps the appointments-- meaning if you have an appointment at 5, but a few people (walk-ins) have been waiting for her for a long time, the walk-ins get seen first. Asides from the long waits (it's better to go after 3 PM and she closes on Thurs and Sat), she's a great family doctor-- very tech-savvy and knowledgeable. Like much of the other reviews, Dr. Fung is awesome, knows whats shes talking about, cares and notes what you have to say before throwing a diagnosis on you. Again, as with most other reviews -- the wait time can be a bit long given she takes walk-ins, but nevertheless weighing your options of having a good doctor or immediate service -- I would side with a good doctor. Also to note, if you have something like a broken finger/toe or any emergency, you probably should be going to the ER and not your PCP. DO - come here for a doctor who knows her stuff and cares for her patients, willing to take the time to know you and hear what you have to say before diagnosing you. I had to wait about 90 minutes, but I didn't have an appointment, so I was glad to be seen. There were a huge number of people ahead of me, but she worked through them very quickly. I was looking for a walk in dr office because I can't see my regular doctor without an appointment unless I beg and plead and wait for at least 3 hours. Have been running a fever on and off for at least a week so I was glad to have found this doctor. On arrival I was told the wait would be at least 1 1/2 but I am a patient person and I did not have an appointment. no issues with the doctor, but like many people stated, the issue is the receptionist. unfortunately, shes been working there for a while, and while im not sure if she'll (as in the receptionist) will be going anywhere anytime soon despite the reviews. wouldn't be surprised if the receptionist is a family friend or has some sort of connection which is why she is still there, otherwise, im sure dr. fung would of replaced her due to many complaints. she's very rude and doesnt represent the office in a professional manner when there are a lot of patients in the room. where there are fewer, she is nicer. the receptionist is rude both in english and chinese and while most patients there are elderly/older, she still behaves the same manner. granted that there is a high demand and the wait times can be long, but there are better ways to show customer service, and if the job is too stressful, then either find alternative ways/methods to make the job easier (hire an additional receptionist, post signs with answers to commonly asked questions) rather than taking it out on your customers. sometimes you gotta pick your battles, if you dont mind having a good doctor while dealing with a poor receptionist, then that is something to consider. read more

My dad has been seeing Dr. Fung for a few years now and today was the first time I accompanied him to his visit. First of all, Karen, the receptionist is AMAZING! She is so caring, friendly and nice. Each patient that came in, she was polite with them and some she even knew on a personal and friendly level. I went in for my annual check up and she is very thorough. Even the rash I had on my arm she caught without me bringing it up. She check my insurance to make sure the lab covers me and she is on point with her diagnosis. And the building she is in has doctors but none of them are busy like her. As for the receptionist, she is awesome. I know some people say she is rude but she pretty amazing. People should give her a break. First I called at 10 am right when they opened she said "we're not even open yet. Call back". I called back 20 min later. She said they take my insurance I come in 1 hour later, my insurance information is through Oscars app - she wouldn't write it down she said I needed to bring in the physical card or print out the information. I was in shock not only that she couldn't write down my insurance info like every other spot, but HOW RUDELY she spoke. On top of that she wasn't sure if they accept my tier of insurance (well you could have asked me that on the phone). She said she wouldn't put my name down on the wait list of THREE HOURS until I print it and come back. I told her I don't understand the rationale of why she couldn't just put my name down until I got back. She jumped at me and with her tone said "alright alright I'll put your name down don't get all excited" I can't speak for the doctor, as I ended up refusing to give this spot my business- but the receptionist just ruins it.
