Another memorable visit to this beautiful place that offers art, music, great hospitality and fantastic wine. If there is only one choice of a winery to become a member, Sanguis would be the one. Without hesitation their wines can match with any top wines in the world. Simply delicious, full of layers, great nose, complex. This year's Pinot was possibly the best I have ever had. First stop on our weekend of wine tastings. This place makes me want to linger like the finish of their "Bossman" blend. It's authoritative and complex. With bold big wines as unique as their maker. Worth the stop, don't be fooled by their location or facade. You'll be happy they are a bit hidden. It means more of their wine for you! Don't forget to ask for a bit of their liquid gold. Their "See Through" white will change the mind of a red wine enthusiast, like me. You might want to bring some dark chocolate to pair with. Best wine tasting I've experienced. Super intimate (wine tastings are by appointment only), you get to learn about the wine making process and see firsthand all the work that goes into making it. This followed up by some incredible wine, no complaints from me. The wine here is super limited, you can taste the care and work they put into these wines. The tasting is free if you purchase 3 bottles. It's a bit pricey but totally worth it. I would recommend this experience to everybody who enjoys wine. This is top notch wine!!! Small production and crafted with care! I originally went to a private tasting and have continued to purchase wine at every release! Their Rose is so good! Very well balanced and full of fruity notes! The Syrah is one of the best I have had with a splash of Viogner to give it that brightness on the finish! When you buy wine you get the option to go to the pick up party where you get to taste all the new releases and have small Bites. Last few times was wood fired pizzas. If you're in to wine tasting, this is one NOT to miss. We were treated like VIPs from the second Gabe answered the jump rope pulled door bell. We learned from root to bottle how Sanguis makes a wine, a spectacular wine. The tasting room & surrounding facility is fun & funky. Clean. I felt I wasn't quite hipster enough to hang, but yet it was comfortable & inviting. Try the wine, buy the wine. It's unique & a surprise. This was the best tasting we had on our weeklong trip to Santa Barbara. Peter was an incredible host - it didn't feel like we were doing a wine tasting; it felt like we were just hanging out, learning about and drinking wine. Other places have buses of people coming in and out and makes the experience less personal; this was not the case at Sanguis. This "personal" experience really extends to the wines they make. The winery itself is really cool. It's not big at all and you'd have no idea people are making wine from the industrial-looking outside. This is one of those times where I want to write a review because it was such an enjoyable experience, but yet I'm not sure I want more people to know about it because then it may be harder to schedule a tasting and they may sell out of wine faster. This place will surprise you. You wouldn't believe they are making wine here. But they aren't just making wine, they are making tremendous wines. Small, family-owned winery that has amazing wines and friendly staff. We went last week and spent the morning with Peter who gave us a tour of the winery and gave us a private wine tasting. The wines were some of the best I've ever had. The owner Matthias and his son were processing grapes in the back and they are get friendly too. Sanguis was the highlight of our Santa Barbara trip. Their building is a converted architectural firm office, renovated to make wine and to host private tastings. You won't be sorry visiting them. read more

As my track record goes, I am not a "yelper" in any respect. I don't even know what that would mean. BUT I do throw my reviews at places that just cannot go without a good word. Sanguis is a very intimate and small operation with a limited case production. I arranged an appointment in August to have a visit. What I did not expect was a full row of beautifully crafted wines waiting for tasting. Once we arrived it was like walking into an episode of MTV Cribs, just amazing inside and very balanced. We met with Jamie and Matthias and received a tour of the grounds and a few tastings form unreleased and some previous wines that in my professional opinion [for what it is worth in my line of work] was the tip top wine on my list. The labeling and packaging alone is breathtaking to me. Afterwards we even got a great recommendation for a local Mexican eatery! It was so personal and incomparable to any other winery I have ever been to that that day holds a really special place for me. I cannot wait to start receiving their wines now and will love going back when able. Extremely well worth a trip to sunny Santa Barbara from foggy SF, that's for sure. I think I found one of Santa Barbara's best kept secrets. If you are a serious wine lover Sanguis is a must. I came with my wife, where we were met by Jessica the assistant wine maker who gave us the VIP treatment. We got the full tour and sat down with her in a private tasting room and tasted some of the best wine I have ever had. Its nice to be king for a day. read more

Visiting Sanguis was such a wonderful experience! The explanation on how they produce their wines was very informative, they all are handcrafted and they produce only a limited number of cases of each superb wine. Every wine we tasted had been previously aerated in decanters and was poured into beautiful wine glasses, each explained in a very relaxed manner; and the great jazz playing in the background so complemented the tasting experience. Our visit to Sanguis was arranged by our Coastal Concierge wine tour driver and it did not disappoint! It is by appointment only and located in an industrial area in Santa Barbara. It may be a small facility but they do everything themselves: wines are bottled by hand and hand-labeled. The owner Matthias even designs the labels using his own artwork or photography. Our one-on-one tasting with assistant winemaker Jessica was the best we had all day. She was friendly and knowledgeable and didn't rush us through anything. We had a lovely long tasting of 5 different wines with very generous pours. I don't remember all the names but our favorites were Las Mujeres and the yet unreleased John Henry. We ended up ordering 3 bottles of each. The wines were a little more expensive than any other winery we visited but she told us they only bottle around 1,500 cases! I lack the vocabulary to describe the wines themselves but everything was really very good. Highly recommend this place! read more

If you enjoy fine wines this is the place for you! You need to make an appointment in advance for a private tour and tasting. You can tell they give special attention to every aspect in wine making and put their heart and soul into every bottle. Each barrel even has it's own name. Jessica, the assistant winemaker is incredibly knowledgeable and makes you feel at home. You sit at a table family style and discuss each of the five bottles. I like to consider myself a wine snob and enjoyed every varietal and blend. Their new Loner Project wines are all stellar especially the Pinot. The Profit was one of my favorites. It's well balanced with a finish you won't forget. This is a place you definitely want to put on your list for tasting in the Urban area and is well worth the $20! For a unique and intimate wine tasting experience, you must try Sanguis. Sanguis is not the typical stop on the SB urban wine trail. They are open by appointment only and the cost is $20 per person. We were greeted by Jessica, a delightful and responsive staff member, who first gave us a tour of the zen-like production area before guiding us through the tasting. The facilities are small but impeccable and the space feels fresh. You can tell immediately that this winery is a work of love and art. We tasted five delicious wines. Two were just released and the others were straight from the barrel. The Chardonnay was HUGE, with a thick, full mouth feel. Chardonnays are usually my favorite but this time I preferred their Viognier Roussanne blend. It was more accessible and easier to imagine what food I might pair with it. All of the reds were equally delicious and HUGE. They are complex, heady and easy to get lost in. For me, it would have been nice to have a food pairing too. My favorite was the cab blend that had that perfect velvety texture. Ahhh.......What a fun, indulgent time I had. I highly recommend it. read more
