Debbie and Eric are the wonderful hosts of the Sankofa Aban Bread and Breakfast. We really enjoyed the jazz jam session and all the musicians were so professional, led by Eric Lemon. Debbie is an excellent cook and provided us with a delicious spinach omelette, with all the fixings, first thing Saturday morning. Public transportation is just down the block, along with a vast variety of wonderful ethnic foods in stores and restaurants, in the neighborhood. I came here recently and enjoyed a saturday night jazz and fish fry. I purchased my tickets for $40 from Sidetour (https://www.sidetour.com/experiences/discover-a-friday-fish-fry-and-jazzfest-at-a-brooklyn-brownstone), though it seems like they also occasionally run Groupons. We showed up promptly at 8pm, though it seemed like it more "officially" began at 9pm. They have some wine/water for purchase (outside of the cover charge) and this is not entirely made clear until you walk up and ask. I think that given the $40 charge, it would have been nice if at least the water was included but it's not a huge deal breaker. I also agree with No N. that it would have been a more homey experience if everyone wasn't on metal folding chairs -- ottomans anyone? Debbie is very friendly and welcoming and the jazz and visiting performer were quite lovely. I think the main downside is that the venue doesn't have air conditioning and it really is quite hot (even on a fairly cool day). Definitely dress down or bring a fan! read more

The location is in dire need of repair. There is NO ac in the room. We specifically called and spoke to the owner Debbie before our stay who stated and I quote, "Oh no we have air" Well the owner might have ac but the guests don't. The rooms have no keys and you are forced to leave your room unlocked when you go out. There is no where to put anything in the room. Every area that could hold something has a nick knack on it. We had to set our things on the floor. Everything has an inch of dust on it. We left after one night. The shower handle didn't work correctly (it fell off in our hand). The bedroom handle didn't work right either. Basically it was hot, loud, and dirty. The noise came from having to leave the windows open due to no ac. The good news is NYC was in a heat wave and the humidity was 95%. We couldn't close our window or we would die from heat exhaustion. The owner touts the property as historical and says things like, "welcome to the 1900's!" That is a true statement. In fact I felt like I was on the Oregon Trail. My only solace was bed bugs most likely can't survive in that kind of heat environment. There is NO WAY the owners don't know what they are doing to people. Well lesson learned. For all of the folks who put good reviews on here you either 1 didn't stay here, 2 are insane, or 3 (my guess) the reviews are made up. I'm 51 and have travelled the world and this is the first time I've had to leave a reservation because it was so far from what was advertised that I simply couldn't stay. It was like camping without a tent in the dirt. Buyer beware. read more

Where should I begin- Oh yeah... upon my arrival Debbie (the owner) came to my rescue!!! She took on the cab driver who attempted to overcharge me for the ride from the airport- She was "Not Having It" I knew right then and there- I was in the Right Place!!! Sankofa Aban is a magical ... upon entering i felt transported to another Place and Time- Such Character and History... The Havana Room- Simply Beautiful! Whatever you do- Please DO NOT miss Brownstone Jazz on Friday and Saturday Nights!!! Oh what a Glorious Experience- I attended both nights... It's just that GOOD (plus there is a Fish Fry ya'll) The Caliber of Performers was simply Outstanding- easily worth five times the price of admission. What a Gift!!! What a pleasant experience! The weather was frightful and I honestly almost cancelled, but knowing that I wouldn't get a refund and possibly miss out on a great event (thanks to previous reviews), I drove in yet another snowstorm and I have not regretted it. Debbie was a wonderful host and the performers were delightful. It reminded me of the passion for jazz that an old college professor had and I appreciated the music even more. This is not a professional B&B. They claim to have a legitimate establishment, yet upon arrival there were spiderwebs on the front door, the room was dirty, the window was open and it was extremely hot in the room and there was no hot water available. On top of this, there was no information about how to access a key to the front door. When approaching the owner about the issues with the room, she was extremely unprofessional, confrontational and unwilling to remedy any problem. We booked with an outside agency and expected a level of hospitality that is standard. This was completely sub par and the fact that the owner had no accountability for her establishment and that she insisted we could only contact the outside agency with no return, I would insist that no one book a room at this establishment. I travel often and have never experienced something of this nature. read more

Sankofa Aban was a magical experience for Me . It has been the most authentic bar I have been , the vibe is incredible, i love the fact that one can share time to talk to the musicians. The food is amazing and the whole vibe as well there is a patio where you can seat-makes the whole experience even better- ...watch the moon, excellent jazz, company, great food and wine... Review for JUST the jazz fish fry - I did not stay overnight. I really wanted to love this. I'd heard great things but... it was really just okay. The best part was by far the musicians, great music even though it was clear they hadn't played together for some time (or possibly ever). Each was a pro so they could pull it off. It's the setup of the night that I thought was a little off. The house is lovely but the uncomfortable metal folding chairs set up in the parlour gave it a recital feel rather than a community and neighborhood coming together to hang out, relax, chat and hear some great jazz. It was stiff and stiff isn't something I think of when I think of jazz! No one really alerted the guests that wine was available for purchase so everyone just sat around waiting for the show to begin. It was pleasant in that the guests and Debbie the host were friendly, but again it was stiff. The fish fry and side dishes were good but not great, you're not going for the food. To me, in this setting, the idea should be more casual and neighborly - stopping by to hear some music, drink some wine and unwind on a Friday or Saturday night. Stand up, dance, move around! There are great musicians live in your living room - don't just sit there, have fun! read more

I went with a friend for the Friday night fish fry and jazz and it was wonderful. I felt like I was being transported back to the Harlem Renaissance. The musicians were exceptional, it was a warm welcome by the hostess, and the food was amazing. You literally feel like you're in another era, and it's a very eclectic group, from European tourists to local musicians just coming to hang out. Such a unique experience. It's very much like going to a neighbors to chill relax and enjoy some very talented musicians while getting a little history of the genre to boot. Host Eric was so knowledgeable and they all had stories about the neighborhood and all the artists that used to live and play nearby. You can easily imagine you're in the 40s or 50s in that house having the same great experience. Fish fry, coleslaw, homemade tartar was fantastic. We were not charged for the wine and water (like some other reviewers so maybe change in policy) although donations were accepted. The chairs were not that comfortable and it was stuffy. But I don't know where else you can hang out with musicians, like you're in another era so the downside is not enough to take away from the 5 star experience. read more

A fantastic setting in a great historic neighbourhood, run by some really lovely people. The Friday/Saturday Jazz/Fish Fry is a must do for your trip. The food is incredible and the music equally so. I've been a jazz fan most of my life, and the performance we saw on October 2nd was incredible. If you love jazz music, and have an interest in the history of jazz, Eric will give you what you need on both fronts. Debbie is a great cook, and very responsive to anything you might ask. We arrived on a week that was a big transition for temperature. My wife mentioned in passing that the room was chilly the second afternoon, and when we came back from dinner, Debbie had removed the AC unit, and all was well. Nice owner, Debbie, and her partner, Eric. Eric plays the bass and every Friday and Saturday there's free admission to an authentic jazz show with fish fry and popcorn for guests of the B and B. Breakfast in the morning is delicious. You are free to use the toiletries in the bathroom. You get the feel of a real brooklyn Brownstone. Brooklyn reminds me of home and this accommodation is right in the middle of it. Half a block away is an authentic Trinidadian restaurant. There's food everywhere within walking distance. Unfortunately my situation will not take me back to NY any time soon as originally planned. read more

I didn't know what to expect when I booked this bed and breakfast about 1 hour's walk from Brooklyn's Commodore Barry Park. I booked the 3 night reservation solely based on pictures provided by Google images. I was blown away by the hospitality of the owners Debbie and Eric Lemon. When I checked in at 3PM, without hesitation they greeted me with open arms and helped carry my luggage all the way to my room on the brownstone's 4th floor(!). Every morning they provided breakfast upon request and also served great conversation. Every evening if I was out after dark, I would receive a text to ensure I was safe and was able to make it back safely. I'll be sure I forget this experience for a long time to come. I also enjoyed the Brownstone Jazz sessions held on Friday and Saturday evenings at 9PM, where Eric (a bassist) is accompanied by at least 3 of the area's most talented jazz musicians. Usually, cover charge for the public is between $60-100 dollars, but the cover charge is waived for guests of the B&B. A home-cooked fried fish dinner is also provided to all attendants during the show. I will say that this is similar to a room and board arrangement, where a room and boarding privileges (plus breakfast) are provided. This is NOT a hotel. Your room isn't cleaned for you and clean sheets/towels aren't always provided on a daily basis. Although extremely well-decorated, the rooms do not have television sets. Bathrooms are well stocked, but shared. Air conditioning units are provided upon request, but warrant an extra charge on top on your reservation. If you are looking for these accommodations, please consider making arrangements to stay at one of the many nearby licensed and registered hotels in the area. However, I will say you'd be missing out on a little-known one-of-a-kind treasure in the Bed-Stuy community. If this is your first time in Brooklyn and don't know what to expect, let Debbie and Eric show you that welcoming hospitality, genuine kindness, and a lasting love for NYC extends beyond the borders of Manhattan. read more

I loved staying here and was only sorry that I missed the weekend jazz salon- next time I come back I will definitely stay over the weekend to catch it. Debbie is a wonderful host! She met me at the front door with a big smile and a hug. This B&B is in an absolutely gorgeous 4-story brownstone in a residential neighborhood. Debbie loves to talk about the house's history and her grandparents. She has a passion for the house and the neighborhood. I stayed in the small room on the fourth floor- so adorable! Breakfast was delicious and I enjoyed talking to the other guests and to Debbie as she cooked for us. This place is magic. It's like walking into an enchanted wardrobe (CS Lewis) and finding a beautiful land of brownstones, soulful jazz, and kind world travelers on the other side. How many Inn keepers greet you with a hug when you first walk through the door? Inn keeper Debbie does and that's just the beginning of the journey that is followed by family stories, neighborhood history, and cooking that tops any local restaurant. The house Jazz party took the whole experience to another level. Listening to Debbie's partner, Eric, and his band play Jazz standards in the inn parlor was pure joy. The fish fry that followed two sets of groovy blue notes was outstanding and I don't even like fish. We went for the Friday night jazz and fish fry and it one of the most unique and fun things I've ever done in Brooklyn. Got hugs from the owner walking in the front door of the brownstone. It was such a welcoming atmosphere. Sort of a cross between a dark and smokey blues bar (minus the smoke, just the cool soulful vibe) and the gospel church scenes in movies where the crowd interacts and really gets into it. But it all takes place in the living room of this beautiful old home. The musicians and singers were an amazing list of beautiful, interesting, stylish, local talent. It was such a cool scene and so much fun. And if you're not that into jazz, you'll learn a lot and come away wanting to know more. read more

Made the trek to Bed Stuy with my boyfriend on a Friday night for Brownstone Jazz in the beautiful parlor of this B&B. The space was intimate but well-appointed, the music was wonderful, and the fish fry dinner at intermission was a truly inspired addition. Four hours flew by, and I couldn't believe it when I finally looked at my phone and it said the time was midnight. I went with a group of 5 for the Saturday night "Brownstone Jazz" and fish fry. Great jazz + delectable fried fish + warm hospitality = heaven on earth! This is the best way I can summarize our experience! My group and I went in not really knowing what to expect and then we had such a great time, none of us wanted it to end! Debbie is the perfect host and the home is just beautiful. We were lucky enough to come on a night when Patsy Grant was the headliner. Her voice is as smooth as silk. Every musician there was wonderful. I especially enjoyed the history and the stories shared by Eric Lemon. We are already planning when we will be able to go again! It is definitely worth the trek from Manhattan. If you have the opportunity to go, do it! You will not be disappointed! read more

Truly a wonderful experience. I wholeheartedly agree with a previous reviewer who said she felt "transported to another time." Learning about the history of the venue and the jazz scene in bed-stuy was great, especially since I'd taken a class in jazz history before and Brooklyn was never mentioned. The space is certainly intimate--my one complaint would be the lack of leg room--but it was worth it to feel the connection with the musicians. The pianist Danny who started off the night was a real treat, and the bassist Eric who doubled as the emcee kept the fire burning. All were great performers, and it was especially cool to see them be able to relax with each other and the audience so they felt more comfortable to try things they might not have in a less intimate setting. The hostess was quite charming and gracious, and the fish fry was delicious. I highly recommend Brownstone Jazz to anyone, jazz fan or otherwise, as a great time in a great place with great people. read more

I have a tough time giving Sankofa Aban B&B two starts because Debbie was GREAT host. But it was missing a number of items that I have come to expect from a B&B. The Friday Night Fish Fry and Jazz was great, but you have to pay a cover. I "guess" I understand because the musicians have to get paid too, but I thought we already paying to stay at the B&B? I was not a fan of the shared bathroom concept, and our bathroom (on the top floor) did not drain properly, so there was a "grime ring" indicating the most recent water level in the tub. I was not a fan of the fact that our room had not been attended to while we were away, and I was AMAZED that we were not offered new towels. These are not huge problem...but it really irked me because my experience here is not consistent with what I have come to believe as being a standard B&B experience. There was no TV for snuggling to watch movies after a long day in Coney Island, and I would have loved if there were a few board games lying around. It felt like we had a room in a house (nothing more, nothing less) read more

Wonderful experience at Sankofa / Brownstone jazz The rooms are beautifully decorated, the beds are firm and the bedding is plush. They offer Real Deal classic jazz performances on Fridays and Saturdays with top notch musicians, cultural and historical points of interest and amazing music while the proprietor is downstairs frying fish, mixing cole- slaw and baking cornbread for the musical intermission. 107 Macon is a on a quaint Brooklyn Street, very close to subways with easy access to other NYC attractions. This place was recommended by a friend's friend, so my friend and I and my 17 yo daughter went to Sankofa and it was a fantastic experience! It was my daughter's first jazz club experience and she loved it. The free fish fry was excellent with a fine compliment of fresh, homemade coleslaw.Bring a personal fan because it can get warm in there... literally, there is no ac, but the music is wonderful. If you love jazz, history, architecture or culture this place combines all three as it takes you back to a different time. We were lucky enough to stay around the corner at another classic brownstone operated by old friends of ours David and Jaqui Gasowski (https://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p242032) and visit Sankofa Aban on a Saturday this August.. After a long day experiencing Brooklyn having the opportunity to clean up and walk to a place that from the street looks like any other brownstone until you go in!!! The hospitality, the setting, the music and the food transport you to a different time. Classic NY Jazz the way it used to be. My wife and I had such a great night. A jazz quartet with three or four sit in musicians in a parlor room unchanged since the 30's with what feels like your family members hanging on every note. Three hours plus of jazz interrupted only by a break for fish, grits and slaw. It doesn't get any better. read more
