We were still in the early stages of getting to know each other and basking in such beautiful and lively surroundings, I learned some new things about him (one can't help but express themselves openly while visiting Suitable Digs). The interest and the pleasure he took in retro, vintage style items was new to me--and only enhanced by our getting to stay in the unique classic, the Spartan. We were already excited by the incredible vegetable and fruit gardens growing in this desert Eden, alongside the various and fascinating water catchment, solar and other energy-conserving systems. So much to see and take in! But when we stepped into the Spartan for the first time, wow...he came alive in a new and different way than I had seen before. His eyes gleamed with wonder, like a little boy on the first eve of Chanukah. The trailer was adorned in time period style, authentic in its original form with all the little extras that Lisa had taken the time and painstaking effort to locate and attach, no distance too far or too wide, no fixture unaccounted for. My beau settled in on the couch to read, out loud, several pages of Red Sky at Morning, a 1968 novel by Richard Bradford that takes place in New Mexico. I listened to him laugh and reminisce all over again, as he had when he first read it years ago. That evening, we sat in chairs on the patio outside the Spartan, gazing at the bright moonlit sky and feeling dreamy about where we had landed together. I recall the moonlight as it shone into the Spartan and landed on soft pillows, just as the warm morning sunlight welcomed itself into our cozy abode to gently awaken us the next day. Being at Suitable Digs for the 21st time was just as familiar as ever...and at the same time, it was as unexpected and fresh as traveling to a completely unfamiliar and exotic destination for the first time. The innovative air that always exists there, remains.

The rooms were cute, very well-kept, and extremely comfortable--exactly as the pictures illustrated. Lisa took time to show us the premises, complete with all of her amazing projects. The rooms feature water recycling, solar-generated electricity, composting, and on-demand water heating system (very cool). Beautiful surrounding area with soul-warming views of the distant mountain range. Easy drive from downtown (yet far enough for a refreshing & secluded feel) and delicious restaurants--just ask Lisa for some recommendations. She was very helpful in offering suggestions to explore the culture, food, and geography of Santa Fe. Overall: overwhelming comfort met eye-opening learnings in sustainability, along with a truly wonderful and inspiring host.

But where? Reviewers touted the Inn Of The Turquoise Bear.....and they were right. Pros: - Location: Central. Just south of the downtown area and a 15 minute walk to Canyon Road. - Exterior: A sprawling property in a residential neighborhood. Several smaller buildings seem to have been added over the (many) years to the main building seen on most photos of the property. - Interior: Like going back 100 years. Things were fixed, of course...especially in public spaces...but you might feel as if you're in a living museum. - Our Room (Witter Byner): Large and rambling. More than enough room for 2 people plus a balcony overlooking the front of the property. Very comfortable. I could live there for a month if we didn't mind going up and down 15 stairs to the main floor. One interesting aspect: The bathroom. It was very nice and fully equipped, but separate from our room and down 5 stairs. That wasn't a problem during the day, but a few nights were an adventure - Breakfast: Unreal. Everything was homemade with great taste. The buffet portion had sliced fruit, granola, juices, pastries and yogurt. The hosts and kitchen staff had 3-5 entrees available each day. I rarely tried those since I filled up on the buffet, but my wife ate one every day and only had good things to say. Service at the community table was gracious and unhurried with lots of interesting conversation. - Amenities: A 1-2 hour Happy Hour every day starting at 430 or 5 PM. Fresh cookies, fruit, tea and jug water were available all day (coffee from 630-10 AM). Umbrellas. Plenty of smiles. - Hosts: Everyone was very friendly, helpful, informative and even charming. Special thanks to Aileen (sp?). - Housekeeping: Effective, efficient and unobtrusive. - Parking: Sufficient. The large courtyard in front of the of the property provided enough room for cars in the 11 room B&B. - Price and Value: Reasonable. It's not cheap, but as in most cases you get what you pay for. We'd heartily recommend the Inn Of The Turquoise Bear, but make reservations well in advance.

As such, we all had a great time together of which this VRBO enhanced our experience. At the same time, there was sticker shock, as on top of the per night charge was a host fee, service fee, and sales tax. The add-ons came to about 50% of the per night rate. Once I got that out of the way, the house was handsome, well maintained, roomy, modern, immaculate, and comfortable and in a great highly walkable (to the Plaza) location. Gayle and I slept well in our room, with lots of storage, and featuring a strong hot shower. It was great for the 4 of us to get together in the common areas, including the living room and the outdoor patio with fire pit. In fact one night we sat out there for hours over pizza and beer and chatted the evening away. The Kitchen was well appointed, although the "coffee maker" mentioned in the listing was actually a Keurig coffee pod machine. A few opportunities for improvement: WIFI didn't really work as it dropped in and out frequently and when it was on, it was weak at best. Bob had planned to do some work during our time together and came up a bit short there. The rest of us just used cellular. I also wish there was a little more product available in the shower, of which we supplemented thanks to a nearby CVS. I'll give this experience 5 Stars (despite the nits) as it helped make our long Santa Fe Weekend convenient, safe, and special. Gayle and I will be coming back next year and we'll look Two Casitas over again, while keeping aware of the pricing components (including alternatives), location, and WiFi.

One can try out something many don't have at home. Then, the disappointing: first, no TV (they're assuming you bring a lap or similar device...problem was I could connect to the network, but got no internet on either phone or laptop.) 2nd, fortunately I brought my own espresso machine, grinder & fresh beans. Reason being, pre-ground coffee with a French press just isn't the same...and you can't steam your milk via the French press method. The towel rack was pulling out of the wall (as it's a deep tub with no loop handle on the wall to grasp upon exit). A floor shower with a marble lip to allow water to build slightly is preferable & much safer especially for seniors. Finally, the mirror needs adjusting for typical heights of people. In the 5'7 - 6'3 range is optimal. A very nice room overall for the price, but internet should be tested in each room if TV's aren't included.- Dan G.

At my request, a Booking.com agent rang the hotel, requested the reduction of 1 night's stay, and returned on the line to inform me that the hotel had happily complied, yet the cost remained higher than expected. A review of the fine-print, however, revealed that the hotel tacked on a random $60 cleaning fee that was not on either of the 2-room bookings when bookings were made initially, and moreover, removed the inclusion of breakfast, the signature stand out of this facility. When I asked the B.com agent to kindly call the hotel back and ask about these stipulations, the person at The Parador identified himself as the "new" owner, and told the Booking.com representative that 1) there had been a change in ownership since booking was made a few months ago; 2) they no longer have a chef (lol), and 3) the fact that the cleaning fee wasn't applied to either room when the reservations were first made "must have been an oversight" - despite the fact that such reasoning just doesn't make sense. If this type of ill-will is created by adjusting the reservation date, then better to call it, cut it, and run. I promptly secured other lodging for our parties and cancelled our reservations. I feel sorry for the people who booked this place and expect either breakfast, or a stay that feels like a boutique hotel that cares. To quote Family Guy, "Good luck everybody else!"

Houses of the Moon is a truly interesting stay. A western, and sometimes southwestern, take on a…read moretraditional Japanese inn. Each of the rooms is moon themed, named, whether in English or Japanese, after a phase of the moon. Those with good Japanese skills, however, may notice that they've run out of phases of the moon and have started doubling up (there is both a hangetsu and half moon, for example). The site is absolutely gorgeous. Even if you're not staying here, it's worth a drive outside of Santa Fe just to come gawk at the architecture. The rooms are comfortable, if a bit sparse. Our mid-level room, for example, had no table. The original rooms are built out of a renovated 80-year old adobe house, and as a result are heated by overhead units and fireplaces rather than central air. Despite that, I never felt uncomfortable in the room, despite visiting in November. I also found the bed very comfortable. Firm but forgiving, not the mushy-soft beds which are becoming trendy at some high end hotels. The rooms do also have a number of amenities, including a variety of types of tea (although not very good tea), fresh fruit, and granola in the room daily. The granola and fruit make an excellent breakfast and/or midnight snack, which is important because it's a little ways into town from Houses of the Moon. The washlets in the room (electric Japanese toilets with heated seats and bidet features) are a nice touch. I personally found the Buddha chocolates delicious, but somewhat kitschy and sacrilegious. I imagine there are a lot of folks out there who would be offended by a place that served you little chocolate Jesuses, so it seems to me we should treat the Buddha with at least as much reverence. Add to that the fact that freeing yourself from earthly desires is a central tenet of Buddhism, and the idea of serving chocolate Buddhas (chocolate being something of a symbol of luxury and earthly desire) seems a bit strange if you stop to think about it. Houses of the Moon also provides guests with yukatas (which they refer to as kimono, presumably for the predominantly Western guests), and bath sandals. However, these don't appear to be sized to the guests. My medium sized self and girlfriend got an XXXL and XXL coat to go over our yukata, and I was swimming in my sandals as well. A nice touch, but would be a lot better if they weren't so huge! Yukata can be worn to Ten Thousand Waves and Izanami, both located on the same property. In addition, Houses of the Moon guests have complimentary use of the communal baths at Ten Thousand Waves, with some restrictions. A nice perk. The staff at Houses of the Moon were excellent, calm, helpful, and never intrusive. They answered all of our questions, and anticipated our needs. A highlight of the stay. Overall, for those looking for a quiet retreat without a lot of hubbub or action, Houses of the Moon is a good choice. If you're just looking to visit Santa Fe, Houses of the Moon doesn't represent a good value for money. There are plenty of nice places to stay closer to the city at much lower rates. Houses of the Moon should also not be mistaken for an authentic Japanese ryokan. While it bears some relation to one, it is more of a western cousin.

The bed sits just inches from the toilet door, so unless you're unusually close with your travel companion, pack earplugs and a blindfold. Dust was caked into the corners, a dead bug was in the ripple of the vintage rug, and we were greeted by a dried booger on the bathroom door (seriously). The door frame lets light in, the floors creaked like a haunted house, and the entire layout felt like it was designed by someone who's never actually had to sleep there. There were no privacy blinds, only wooden shutters, and the artwork provided enough clutter to fill the room just in case you forgot your own luggage. Breakfast was the big show! Most of what we were served was delicious. For an extra $45 per person, you'll be given whatever the kitchen feels like making that morning... no choices, no allergy considerations, and not even a glass of water. Instead, you're handed an herbal infusion and expected to sip with gratitude while waiting 90 minutes for your dessert tart. But our group's disappointment simply must have meant we didn't understand the "magic" of the experience. In the end, Casa Culinaria is the kind of place that confuses ambiance with hospitality and is more interested in curating an image than creating a welcoming stay. If you're searching in Santa Fe for a splintering rocking chair, garden corners appropriate for Instagram, or even paying $340/night to be treated like an inconvenience... this is the winner! At Hotel St. Francis the AC had been broken for at least three days before we arrived. Staff knew and said nothing, no heads-up even though a toddler was coming. We found out only after unloading the car and checking in. Nobody offered to move us or help with our bags. To make it right, St. Francis promised an upgraded room at the Eldorado Hotel & Spa (a clearly worse hotel). The Eldorado made it worse. We'd said plainly we needed to be away from the pool because our toddler's naps depended on it. They agreed, then put us closer than promised, then moved us to a room that was a downgrade from the upgrade we were owed. The third-floor windows swung fully open, no limiter, with a couch underneath to climb and nothing to catch a fall. We found a prescription pill on the floor from a previous guest, where our daughter could reach it. Photos of both. At 2 AM my phone slipped under the bed, security was no help, and my wife sliced her hand on a rusty staple while we lifted the mattress and boxspring ourselves. A crib we confirmed twice never showed. And when I calmly asked housekeeping how much longer they'd be, 20-plus minutes past nap time, they cut me off mid-sentence. Twice. We escalated formally to Heritage leadership and got a partial refund for St. Francis, nothing else. No word on my wife's injury, the medication, the broken upgrade promise, or the travel credit we lost because they never disclosed the AC problem in time to cancel. We followed up repeatedly and it's still unresolved. This wasn't one bad night, it was failure on failure across two properties, some of it dangerous, with corporate no better. We won't be back, and with little kids, think hard before booking here. Cainan Harris, their VP of Operations, should find a new role, because cleaning up messes his hotels created isn't a strength.

For that price, and for being a 3-star hotel, Four Kachinas fell well below what we were expecting. Hotel Tech Report describes 3-star hotels as follows: "Three stars: a typical hotel will have three stars and offer room service, ensuite bathrooms, daily cleaning, a desk or table, and Wifi. This is a standard hotel experience that most travelers expect unless they're on a strict budget." Four Kachinas did not offer room service, a desk or table, and the WiFi was continually intermittent through our stay. When we tried to watch TV, it buffered because of the slow WiFi, and then when we selected something it wanted us to download and sign up for an app. We needed to run the hot water in the bathroom for a long while for it to heat up; the hot water heater is presumably shared with the other rooms and en suites in the complex. Finally, there was no mini-fridge in the room, so we couldn't bring home leftovers, and anyone needing to store refrigerated medication would be out of luck. The room we selected, the Zia, was cute and decorated eclectically in a Southwest theme. It had a very solid king bed, two sitting chairs, a closet for storing clothing, and a large shower. Four Kachinas offers a breakfast in the morning from 8am-9:30am, which includes bread selections, fruit plates, cereal, and a hot dish. The morning we tried the breakfast the hot dish was a vegetarian black bean and tortilla strata and one link of chicken sausage. Neither my husband nor I cared for the breakfast and we opted to eat out the second morning we were there. Overall, a cute room but not much in the way at all with amenities or even basic services (a refrigerator, WiFi, hot water, a table or desk, etc). Perhaps others will have a different experience, but at almost $300 a night we'll opt to stay elsewhere next time.
