03/03/2025 - I have a 50 year relationship with Sausalito/Santa Rosa Allied Moving & Storage. They have moved me to Europe and back, from San Francisco to Marin County across the Golden Gate Bridge and unfortunately (for me) moved me five times since 2008 around the County. I have used them for storage for eight years. Recently last month, they moved me again and did an excellent job from start to finish. The office staff is responsive, the sales estimator both on zoom (during Covid) and recently in person is responsive and professional, the three crew moving teams the best of the best. I recently completed a cross-country move on my own and was extremely stressed going into it, but working with Hannah at Santa Rosa Moving made the entire experience smooth from start to finish. Hannah was incredible to work with. She came out to provide the quote, communicated clearly at every step of the process, and made sure everything was organized and seamless. The pricing was accurate and fair, timelines were followed exactly, and I always felt informed and supported throughout the move. Hannah also selected and coordinated with Allied Vans for the actual move, and she absolutely nailed it with that choice. John was the driver, and he and his entire team were exceptional. I truly could not have asked for a friendlier, more professional, or more careful crew. A Complete Nightmare--Avoid at All Costs! Hiring this moving company was a big, big mistake. We relocated from San Francisco to Chicago in the middle of winter, and despite reading the bad reviews, I foolishly gave them a chance. Why? Because they offered a better price than other companies. In the end, we paid far more in damages and losses than we ever would have with a reliable mover. When I voiced my concerns, the representative assured me the negative reviews were just isolated cases. She was professional--until moving day. That morning, a couple of workers arrived and began hauling our boxes outside. The problem? No truck. After a heated phone exchange with the driver, the workers decided their time was being wasted and simply left, abandoning half our belongings on the sidewalk. For over three hours, we stood outside in the cold, guarding our things with a baby in tow, unsure if they'd ever return. Meanwhile, our representative conveniently became unreachable, leaving us to deal with a rude, dismissive replacement who tried to blame us for the mess. When our belongings finally arrived in Chicago, it was another disaster. The movers ignored box labels, dumped items in random rooms, and assembled our furniture incorrectly. Our TV? Broken. (Even though it was packed in a TV box.) Our plates? Smashed. (Despite being wrapped in bubble wrap.) At least three boxes were missing, and we received someone else's belongings instead. As for compensation? Nothing. They hid behind their policy: Items packed by the owner? Not covered. Missing boxes? Not their problem. (We were expected to check every single box before letting the driver leave--in the freezing cold, amid total chaos.) To make matters worse, any attempts to resolve this took weeks of ignored emails. We thought we were getting a good deal. Instead, we lost money, time, and peace of mind. Do yourself a favor--pay more for a company that won't destroy or lose your belongings. read more

Do not hire. We hired Allied for our move from SF to Colorado and they used Santa Rosa Moving & Storage for their on-the-ground crew. Here is a list of things that sums up our experience: - Crew was 2 hours late to arrive on moving day and driver / project manager was unsympathetic and blamed everything on everyone else, zero accountability - Were told TVs would be boxed up and handled by Allied / Santa Rosa on day of the move. Nope, spent over an hour driving around in traffic morning of the move trying to find TV boxes to make up for their ineptitude. Last thing we wanted to do when we had a flight to catch after a move with small children. We were never compensated for their mistake - On the other side, crew was once again late for unpacking, driver excuses continued - Several furniture items packed by the company were damaged. Driver argued with me about clearly broken pieces and then tried to leave without reassembling any pieces and was rude / disgruntled when we said no. Throughout the entire process he was highly argumentative about basically everything and took absolutely zero accountability for anything. We didn't even bother filing a claim because the company did not seem to care about any of this feedback and was unwilling to take any accountability. Didn't seem likely it would be worth the time and effort for the pennies we'd maybe get back months later - Driver then made inappropriate comments about our house and how he wouldn't have picked the carpet we chose and other design features. Bizarre and rude - Driver complained multiple times about how he wasn't being paid enough off of this trip due to the original estimate being incorrect. He said this 5 or more times, which made us feel very uncomfortable and it's obviously very unprofessional - Driver complained about putting down plastic / material to protect our carpets and about the home's entry points When I surfaced this feedback to Santa Rosa, they refused to offer any compensation. They also passed on 100% of the blame to the company who employs the driver and took zero of their own accountability. However Allied / Santa Rosa hired that company and still works with them, so it's on them. Hannah will reply to this and probably say the same thing, that the driver works for someone else. Ok, then don't work with that company if you don't want to be held accountable or offer some kind of compensation. I do not accept that excuse. Anywho, hire at your own risk. Personnel were responsive and professional. Business is organized and movers were careful. Ours was a small job in southern Marin and because the company is listed as Sausalito and Santa Rosa Moving & Storage we assumed they had personnel in southern Marin which is important because portal to portal travel time is billed the same as work for each mover and along with a $75 fuel charge made up a large part of the expense. There is no Sausalito office so the travel expense was from Santa Rosa to southern Marin and back. Check into actual local movers first. read more

They helped me with a long distance move from San Francisco to Portland OR. Hannah was great from the beginning, with good communication and upfront about information. I got quotes from two other companies. One quoted me 1-2k higher, and said that I was getting a good value with this company. The other quoted me 1.5k lower, but used very aggressive sales tactics and made me feel uncomfortable about trusting them with my move. Very happy I went with this service. They got my moving permit for me and navigated parallel parking on a very narrow SF street that has a light rail going by it. I packed myself and the movers, Anthony and Jesus, were polite and professional. They were communicative about delivery time, and got my things to me in a reasonable time, even when their truck broke down and they had to take it into the shop. All of my stuff was there, and when I thought a few things were missing, they knew by memory that they'd actually put those things in the wardrobe box I hadn't opened yet. DO NOT -- DO NOT -- DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY, ALLIED OR ANY ALLIED MOVING AFFILIATE. IMHO they stuff and pump their reviews and promise the world and don't deliver (pun intended). We wish we had chosen another. Don't be fooled by their sales people. For this important cross country move valuable and important Items were mis-marked, lost, and heavily damaged costing us $$$$. Allied and its affiliate took little or no responsibility in those cases. Packing was rushed and done in a mediocre manner, inventory was incomplete, valuable items went "missing" (what really happened?). Settling with the Allied Insurance Carrier was a protracted mess and less than forthright where everything was conducted over email and no one would return phone calls. We have moved five times in our professional life and this experience was the worst by far and we had more damage and lost items than the other four moves combined. This is long overdue, but I wanted to leave a comment about our experience with Santa Rosa Moving and Storage. They moved our 3 bedroom household goods from Santa Rosa to Southern California at the end of March. They were courteous, professional and communicative. I had a nightmare experience when I moved to Santa Rosa years ago and was very worried about this move. If I knew now what a great experience it would be, I would not have worried. From the very beginning Kim walked our house, gave us a great, competitive estimate and was very communicative. We knew exactly when to expect pick up and delivery. Both moving crews at both houses were friendly, efficient and knew how to pack goods and move them safely. I had NO breakage - and I moved alot of fragile goods. Moving is chaotic, but Santa Rosa Moving and Storage made it so much easier. I would definitely recommend them to anyone who needs a moving company. read more

We used this company for our first and hopefully only cross county move. I interviewed three companies and I wish I had selected another option. The moved us out of our home in Santa Rosa in Sept. 2020 and into storage in their Rohnert Park location. When we finally received our belonging in April 2021 there were many items missing or damaged. We filed a claim but they said it could be 3-4 months before they respond. In the meantime I have I assembled furniture in my new home, they lost the pieces, and I will need to replace items that were missing. All this and the cost was close to $20,000. Moving is extremely stressful. Finding a moving company who delivers on all cylinders seems likely even more challenging in an industry riddled with scams and misinformation. After conducting many hours of research over several weeks for our cross country move, outrageous prices and declarations on both ends of the spectrum, we arrived at Santa Rosa where Hannah fielded our request. She was one stop shopping! After a thorough virtual walkthrough of the load, we received our quote by end of the day. She also booked our two vehicles we were shipping. We had nothing short of an incredible experience with all those involved in the move. Hannah was extremely responsive, and as I'd say "on the level". There was no hassle. No follow up needed. Our driver Chris Loran, met us on both ends of the delivery. Chris brought with him two excellent crews of experienced movers! We received all of our items in perfect condition. Chris apparently runs a meticulous operation and is an great ambassador for Allied. Santa rosa is an agent of Allied whom I had initially contacted. But if moving from Northern California, I'd encourage you to reach out to Hannah and the Santa Rosa team and avoid all the headaches I've read about working with other moving companies. Worst experience I've ever had. I've hired movers six or seven times, and never have I experienced such poor customer service. I hired these movers because they said packing was part of the job they do. The person I booked the move with said they needed three people instead of two to move my one-bedroom because I needed assistance with packing. When they arrived an hour late, the movers claimed they had no idea they were packing too, even though they brought empty moving boxes that I had paid for to pack into. They immediately had a negative attitude. Not knowing that one of us spoke Spanish, they made rude comments and stated nasty things about us speaking in a language they thought we didn't know. As they were talking, they began throwing things into boxes with little care. As we approached them about taking more care of our belongings, they were defensive and combative. They took the espresso machine and put it in a box on its side without emptying the water or securing the espresso beans. If I wanted to make my morning coffee without all the parts necessary in the morning, I would have had my five-year-old pack for me. This created a wet mess of beans and water at the bottom of the box, and I still cannot find some parts of the unit. I had a locked cabinet with very little inside it. One of the workers demanded that I open it so he could see what's inside. When I asked why he said, "We don't care if it's drugs or anything. We just have to know what is inside." I didn't see them opening our prepacked boxes to see what was inside. All of this was fine. I thought, "OK, miss communication. Everyone has a bad day." Then, it was the grand finale that inspired me to write this negative review. Everything was done, and they gave me a bill of $1,457. Being a super nice guy and overly generous, I asked if I could add a tip for the three movers. The man on the phone said yes, of course, so I added $300 to the bill. $100 for each of them. The total was now $1,757. The man on the phone asked me for my credit card number and billing address, so I gave it to him correctly, and we hung up. Less than 5 minutes later, he called me back and told me the charge declined. Having the funds available, I assured him that something must be wrong and that I would call my bank, resolve it, and call him right back. When I called my bank, they couldn't see anything wrong, but because the movers had tried to charge my card several times, they thought that maybe since the system was pinged more than $5,000 for the day, the system was blocking the charges. So, I spoke with a manager, got the $5,000 daily limit lifted, and a charge of $1,757 was authorized to go through. I called the movers back and let them know the payment was authorized and to go ahead and make the charge, and we got off the phone together. A minute later, a notification popped up on my screen that said, "charge for $1,849 denied," then my phone immediately rang, and it was the guy from the movers again telling me the charge didn't go through again. I told him the $1,757 charge was approved and asked why he had charged $1,849. He told me that his "guys" were waiting outside for payment, doing nothing, waiting for payment and that I had to pay for their time. I said, OK, but I now needed to call my bank, get the amount reauthorized, and that his guys could go; I didn't want to pay for them standing around doing nothing while I spent another 20 minutes on the phone with my bank. He immediately snapped back and said, "My guys are about to start pulling your things back out of your unit. We don't leave until we get paid!" I thought to myself, wow, really? What will they do with it if they pull the stuff out; where will they take it? But, again, I took it in stride and focused on just having the horrible experience with them being over. This time I insisted that he stay on the phone with me while I called my bank, and we all stay on the phone together until the matter was resolved and that I was not going to pay more than the $1,457 plus the generous $300 tip. I contacted the bank, and the bank couldn't figure out what was wrong. They said that even though the charge was for more than the original amount of $1,757, it should have gone through because they had processed the approval for up to $2,000. They suggested that we rerun the charge, and they'd watch it in real-time to figure out what was going wrong. So, the movers reran the charge, and again it was denied. My bank watching the transaction as it happened, said the transaction didn't go through because the wrong address was used. It turns out that the movers were using the address we had moved from instead of the address I gave them when I provided them my billing information. The whole time the billing error and denials were because the movers were making a mistake. With all the customer service negativity and poor quality of packing, I could let go of a bad day and move on. Still, the threat of forcing themselves read more

I recently booked my cross country move with Santa Rosa Moving (through Allied). They will not actually pick up my belongings until December, but thought I'd leave a review just for this booking experience. I've learned that the booking process can tell you some things about what the actual move experience may be like. I was scammed out of about $1200 last month trying to use another company (North American Van Lines - avoid them like the plague ), so I was VERY skeptical when talking to any other company to complete my move. I contacted Allied and they referred my to their agent, Santa Rosa Moving and Storage. I wish I had called them sooner. Hannah was extremely helpful, answered all of my questions in the trillion emails I sent her, and promptly sent me an estimate with all of the other documents required. Additionally, when I called with more questions, Hannah actually answered the phone along with all of my additional questions as well. I'm hoping that the actual move experience will be as seamless as the booking process has been. Santa Rosa Moving (aka Sausalito Moving and Storage) moved my family about a mile down the road in St. Helena. We had a large, square dining room table that was extremely difficult to get in to the home due to its size. It could only be done by removing the base from the table. We made this clear to the estimator. When the movers arrived, we did a walk-through and told the movers that the base needed to be removed due to weight and bulky size. Near the end of the load, the table was one of the last things to put into the truck. While picking it up, we once again reminded them that they needed to remove the base. Instead they thought they could do it without taking the time to remove the base. They indeed had a difficult time and ultimately, one mover tripped going backwards, taking a 2-3 inch chunk off the table top, not to mention multiple dings. He also injured himself, taking him out of the rest of the moving day and making the mobing day longer. We filled out the claim asking for a repair or replacement. We received a check for just over $100 instead. Upon calling Jay Lucas, the VP in charge of claims, he smugly told us that we didn't opt for the full replacement insurance (that he said was $95). As such he has no obligation to pay us more or to repair the table. I mentioned the constant attempt to get his movers to take off the base but he told me it didn't matter. The problem, he said, wasn't the movers not following our directions, but the fact that we didn't pay for the extra insurance. Having not hired a lawyer yet for this to get the legal opinion, I imagine that he would take a little responsibility for his movers regardless of whether or not we paid for extra insurance. It also seemed to me that, regardless of insurance, they agreeed to at least attempt to repair any damages to any items (dont have the papers in front of me). He refuses to do anything. I'll look into this from a legal perspective. I've run a business for 17 years, and even when I COULD screw over customers legally, I've always done what is right. I'm proud of that and want to do business with others who have the same ethic. My reason for issuing a negative rating is that the service level at this company is obviously poor. The VP (maybe he's the owner too?) could care less. The lack of ethics is concerning. Potential customers should know that, should they hire this company, the movers will do whatever they want, have no regard for your items or directions, and there will be nothing the customer can do about it. Maybe this company should state clearly in their contracts that they suggest paying extra for the extended insurance because they will have no regard for your belongings or directions and that, as such, there is a strong liklihood that you will have claims. Hire at your own risk. My $1400 estimated move really cost: $2200 (what they charged me) plus $3500 for my table, not to mention the time to fill out this, BBB complaints, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration complaints, etc. I'm reporting separately on this company to the BBB for issuing a low-ball estimate and charging me 50% more on moving day. I am presently in the 20th home of my life -- so needless to say I have moved ALOT! Some were corporate moves where our household belongings filled an entire truck. Some were local (friends and family) moves. Some were short in-state professional moves. The 'smaller than a full truck' moves are relatively new to me -- have done only 2 before this one. I had to have the contents of my son's storage unit in Sebastopol, and a few of his belongings from my house moved to him in Boulder, CO. Kim from Santa Rosa/Sausalito Moving and Storage gave me a prompt 'not to exceed' estimate (actual cost was lower than estimated) -- and she and everyone I contacted at the company were informed, efficient, friendly, helpful and accommodating. (And I'm a 'worrier' - so contacted them a number of times to make sure we were still on target!) They arranged his items to be picked up on the day I requested (a Monday) and informed me at that time that the 'big' truck to Boulder would pick it up on Wednesday. Everything went according to plan (with only a small snafu in that without a specific delivery window for the HOA on the Boulder end -- unable to deliver on Sunday as planned) -- and the GREAT driver delivered everything to him intact on Monday. The company was recommended to me by someone who had used them for an in-state move. Not as complicated as this one. Yet -- my experience too, was virtually effortless, smooth, and efficient. I was moved by this company from Sonoma to San Francisco on August 1. They damaged two pieces of furniture, including an antique table that belonged to my grandmother and had recently been refinished (it now has several gashes in the side). They knocked off part of another table and didn't even notice... I had to ask them to find the missing piece in the truck. Neither of them apologized or really even acknowledged that there was a problem. I've moved a lot and I know things get bumped and dinged, that just par for the course, but this was pretty shocking. When I got the 'not to exceed' estimate I assumed, based on my previous moves, that there was no way it could take that long. It didn't take quite as long as the estimate, but it was close. I think the guys may be given directions to make the move take as long as possible. They were slow and pretty inefficient. At one point, I was in the new apartment, and a long stretch of time went by without either of them bringing up a load. So, I went down to the lobby of the building to see what was going on. I didn't find either of them, but I did find all of my belongings strewn around the lobby, the door to outside open and the door to the truck open (with a few small boxes sitting right near the opening where anyone walking by on the street could have grabbed them). Maybe I just got unlucky with the crew that moved me, but I definitely would not recommend these guys. read more

We entrusted our household belongings of fifty years to SRMS until we found a home in Massachusetts. After seven months we arranged to have our belongings sent. We were not told that we would have a split order, arriving ten days apart, for which they apologized. When the first shipment arrived, the movers handed us individual books and small items. I called Jay Lucas, and I was told that it was the movers' fault. The movers told me this was how they picked up our order. We didn't notice until the next day that many boxes were re-taped--23 total, after finding more in the 2nd shipment. (I used clear tape; this was tan.) Mr. Lucas told me to "take it up with Allied" assuming this was done en route. Since the 2nd shipment also had re-taping, it had to have happened at the warehouse. I did take it up with Allied and was told that we would not be informed of the outcome "as it is an in house discussion." Fortunately, we took out full coverage insurance. We lost a beloved antique rocking chair. As for the pillaging of our boxes, we just discovered several missing items, six months later. Allied and Santa Rosa both have made it very clear that corporations protect themselves, not the customer. Santa Rosa moving picked up my belongings in Mountain View CA 9/24/12 and placed in their storage facility. Items included a new (15 month old) pillow top queen bed set and separate 2 inch memory foam topper. Both were in perfect condition (no smell, NO exposure to odors or moisture) at the time they were picked up. Items were taken out of storage by SR moving and delivered to my new residence 8/5/13. After the mattress set was removed from boxes, a strong odor of mildew/dampness was noted. All of the stored cardboard boxes also smelled but the contents were removed and successfully washed or aired. I called and reported the mattress smell 8/5 (the *day of delivery*) to the mover's office, I was told that Jay (VP) would call me back that day. I slept on the mattress that night but spent the night sneezing and the smell was intolerable. By morning, my pillows and pajamas reeked. The next day 8/6 I called the movers again, again I was told that J would call me. Apparently, he refused. Instead, the office person called back to advise that she was mailing a claim form, as I had purchased replacement value storage insurance with $500 deductible. On 8/6 afternoon, the day after delivery and two phone calls later, I could not tolerate the smell from the mattress and memory foam in my small apartment, so called a hauling company who took it away for $40.00. I received the claim form 8/7/13 and filed immediately, filing value of $900 for mattress set, $80 for memory foam pad, $40 for hauling away (plus another small furniture damage claim). I expected the $500 deductible to be applied. I received a letter 8/14 from the VP denying all claims as "the smell couldn't have come from us, it must have been in the mattress before storage". I called and insisted that the odor to stored boxes and bed was a result of his storage facility and requested payment of my insurance claim, minus deductible. He was unwilling to discuss and stated that I had visited the facility prior to storage. Per the BBB complaint: Regarding the pre-move visit: " I spent less than 15 minutes in the storage facility, which does NOT preclude the later possibility or claim of odor/damage caused by nearly 11 months in storage. The company is apparently self insured: the vice president, who denied the claim himself after failing to return my phone calls for two days (after his staff had twice promised), did not submit a claim to any insurance company. He denied the claim himself. He knew the issue was urgent as it was an unusable mattress, but delayed his response. Had he returned my calls, as I was told he would, he could easily have done an inspection. My apartment is a 15 minute drive from his office." "Additionally, If I had known that I was purchasing insurance directly from the storage company and not a third party insurance company, I would likely have gone elsewhere. The VP, who handles the claims himself, can arbitrarily deny with no recourse, which is a conflict of interest." Santa Rosa Moving and Storage does NOT have a climate controlled facility. They are responsible for the mattress set/memory foam moisture damage and should pay the claim per the insurance policy. Bottom line: the clerical folks are very nice. The VP will not honor your damage claim even after buying (from them) storage insurance for ten months. Just another rip off. Go elsewhere. The move was flawless and Peter did a great job of keeping us informed the whole time regarding what day / time they would be in Boston and an estimate as to how long the move in would take.
