The shop was very clean which surprised us with our previous experiences with other gelato or ice cream shops. Prices were a bit pricey for the standard fare. A small cup (two flavors though) costs €3.90 each. Similar sizes allover Europe would set us back €2 to €2.50. This was our first food stop arriving Lisbon. I saw that this was a popular local ice cream shop and wanted to try it since we would be walking around the area. It did not disappoint, and after an 11 hour flight, it was a nice sweet treat. We got there on a Sunday afternoon around 3:00pm. The line was just barely out the door, but it moved quickly. We got a medium with hazelnut and pistachio. Both were yummy and the portion size was generous for two people. The gelato was very fluffy and smooth. Maybe the pistachio could have been a touch stronger in flavor, but it's a solid choice for gelato overall. Both my bf and I enjoyed it. They have seating in the back so we sat for a bit to eat our gelato and then continued on exploring the streets. It's a good stop if you're in the area! Is it touristy? Maybe. The coconut was the clear standout with a really strong, genuine coconut flavor and a pleasant texture. I came here for dessert one night and the line was pretty long but it moved quickly. They make you pay for your gelato before you choose your flavors. A cone is an extra fee with your gelato, but a cup is free. I got three flavors: hazelnut, caramel, and marabunta. Hazelnut was good and tasted exactly like nutella. Caramel was a little too seeet for me. Marabunta is the unique flavor created by Santinis. It is basically cream gelato with chocolate shavings. This was definitely my favorite flavor of the three. A local guide recommended this place for the best gelato in Lisbon and we decided to give them a try one evening for dessert. The founder was Italian and brought his skills to Portugal after WWII. The small colorful shop in Chiado in back of H&M offers around 20 luscious flavor. NOTE: pay first at the register- around 3,80€ for small (up to 2 different flavors). I tried the raspberry and the vanilla while my wife got chocolate and peanut flavors. Everything was fresh and creamy. You can choose a cup or cone. There is plenty of seating in the store from benches to tables. There was even a couple of street singers outside the store adding to the ambience when we were there. When you enter, go to the cash to pay for the number of scoops that you would like, and then line up to take your receipt to the counter, where you trade it in for your chosen amount of gelato. I tried the house flavor, named after the business, which was some kind of red fruits, and had some tasty cake pieces in it, so I can recommend that for sure. Probably the most well known gelato in Lisbon, it's well located for those walking in the heart of tourist central. We loved that it's open so late, not to mention gelato is great too. The front area has a number of tables for eating, hanging out, best if you ordered from the dessert menu rather than just scoops. Check out the gelato menu (in Portuguese and English) at the first counter or past the second for flavors. We were only there for a week but the menu didn't change. Not sure if it rotators much, but there's a good variety of sorbets and dairy flavors. Walk past the first counter to the second one on the left and pay before ordering scoops at the dipping counter. Typical European system, but it's easy to forget coming from the States. More often than not I go for at least one fruit flavor while overseas because they do them so well. The Mango, Passion Fruit and Fruits of the Forrest (mixed berry) are great choices. For dairy, the Chocolate and Marabunta (new fave, Cream with small non-uniform chocolate chips) are solid. read more

We had tried the Time Out market location a few days prior but wanted to get Santini one last time since you can only find it in Portugal. The place was very busy on a Saturday night at 11:30pm. They have pâtisserie desserts in the front, but keep going down the stairs deeper into the store, because their main deal is gelato, with a huge counter in the back. You pay first, at the nearby rear register, then submit your ticket to the server at the counter, and ask your flavors. Flavor menus are in 4 languages, Portuguese, English, French and German. Portions are generous for what I'd expect in the city, any city, and especially in Europe. They frankly put American servings to shame for gelato, because in the US, gelato is not dished out like ice cream, it's provisioned in little mini-scoops like some war ration, but in Europe, you get more, and at Santini's, you get a LOT more. And it is very good, too. Strong flavors in the creaminess, with a lot of classic favorite for options. Red-and-white colorscheme is very dessert parlour-y, and matches their logo. My favorites were the raspberry gelato mixed with cream/vanilla gelato -- it's great because they will give you two flavors in one scoop My friend loved the hazelnut and other coffee-esque flavors.
