For dinner we decided to stick with the signature dishes: the green tea chicken and the sesame noodles. The chicken is outstanding - tender and flavorful. It falls off the bone and the broth is absolutely delicious. It served me, my husband and adult son perfectly. If you are ordering for 4 you might want to get a second substantial side dish. They were not too busy on a Friday evening, and it was easy to get a last-minute reservation. Our server was kind and ready to provide drink recommendations, but I wish she had checked in more often. It took a bit for her to take our food order, and we had to flag down another staff member to get the check. The interior is well decorated and not that loud. I did feel like we sat too close to the table next to us, though. Let's talk drinks. The cutting of sleeves was delicious with the passionfruit flavor. The west lake potion tasted watered down, and I couldn't taste any lychee flavor at all - would not recommend. The food was fantastic. Highly recommend the soy glazed crispy fish - perfect balance of saltiness and sweetness with the crispiness lasting through every single bite. The hong shao rou was so fatty and tender and absolutely tasted like home. It was so rich and flavorful, and the bamboo shoots were perfectly paired with the meat. My only complaint is that the portions are on the smaller side, almost tapas-style for the price. To celebrate Dragon Boat Festival, they're serving a special Zongzi ($14). Each one is packed with seasoned sticky rice, lap cheong, pork belly, salted egg yolk, and shiitake mushrooms. The Chili Pepper Chicken was a fairly standard stir fry with a little heat and not much sauce...tasty and went well with the white rice (an extra $3). The Duck Fried Rice was a little on the dry side...but very flavorful. The Snow Pea Sprouts were delicious, mildly cooked with a lot of flavor. The Soy Glazed Crispy Fish was totally dry but delicious...nice chunks of soy sauce flavored medium sized pieces of juicy fish. In all, I enjoyed this meal. We got there at 5:45 without a reservation and they said they could community table seat us until 7pm - we're fast eaters so that worked perfectly. I don't think I've ever had a restaurant that specializes in 'Hangzhou' food before. The only 'standard' thing we got was mapo tofu, which was flavorful though not mind blowing. We also got pepper chicken (asked for it extra spicy, it wasn't, c'est la vie!), and their crispy eggplant. Pepper chicken was solid pan fried piece of chicken, good flavor but nothing earth shattering. Walking into the restaurant, the ambiance is lovely and decorated well. Lots of tables for large groups and a semi-private dining area in the back. We came for a weekend lunch and ended up staying for hours after just drinking tea and chatting. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy at the time, so they didn't rush us out or anything which was nice. We ordered the xiao long bao, braised pork belly, mapo tofu, and soft shell crab. The prices of the dishes were very reasonable compared to other Chinese restaurants in the city. However, considering that Grandma's Home is a well-known restaurant chain in China and this is their first US location, it fell short. I love the Chinese outpost of Grandma's Home but it felt like the dishes were not up to par. The taste has definitely been altered for the Western palate. The pork belly was served with bao buns to make gua bao, which you might see at fusion restaurants, but it's not a thing in Hangzhou cuisine. It is more common in Fujian. The sauce was also overly salty and thick with small cuts of pork. The majority of the dish was an assortment of mushrooms. What would've been a better dish is dong po rou with a larger piece of pork and braised till tender. This pork wasn't tender enough.
