I had the pleasure of having my hair done by Amina yesterday, and it was such a great experience. She's caring, skilled, and very professional. I'm in an awkward hair phase and she really took the time to access what I wanted for the best outcome. I especially appreciated her patience and felt like she took the time to listen to what I wanted. It's refreshing to feel like your stylist actually gives a shit. She's fucking awesome! Go see Amina at Studio Hix! She's been cutting my hair for the past year or two and does a fantastic job. I've had short hair for a few years now and it's always magical to find hairdressers who know how to cut short hair - it's a skill-set unto itself, especially if you're like me and have wacky growth patterns and you're working on growing out a pixie cut (it's been traumatic and she's carried me through). She's really good at getting a feel for your hair, so each time you come back you don't have to explain a million things to her - just give her an idea of what you're thinking of, and she'll make it work on your head. She also has the most gracious "bedside" manner. She is interminably, genuinely friendly and kind. She is sure to have you laughing and feeling confident and cheerful. I don't Yelp, but I created an account to sing the praises of Sara. I have been getting my hair cut by Sara off and on for more than ten years. My most recent stint of "taking a break" to "try someone new" has left me returning to Sara tonight, wondering what was I thinking?!? I like my hair in a textured pixie cut, and other stylists have never quite gotten it right for me. Too structured, too much like a bowl cut, not feminine enough, too this too that. Sara just gets it. She cuts hair intuitively, not according to any one school of thought. She listens and she just knows. I just read a review I wrote for Sara from 2007... and it's still true! She is more than a hairdresser - she is a hair artist. I have on occasion tried other salons in the Bay Area over the past 8 years (Pin Up Parlor in Berkeley and Manifesta Salon in Oakland) and every time I come running back to Sara. Sara is cool, calm, smart and stylish. I have gone to her for trims and major transformations, and have always been happy with my hair. I said it before and I'll say it again - I actually love my hair just as much - if not more - when I do it myself the next day. That is pretty remarkable. I also LOVE her new space. It's so "Sara". Amazing art on the walls, fun and a little goth. Really easy to get to from Powell BART. I had my share of traumatic haircuts in my childhood so I just refuse to deal with bad haircuts as an adult. I had an appointment today at studio Hix with a stylist who did not show for our appointment--he rents a chair and I want to say up front that his unprofessionalism is in no way a reflection on Sara Hix or the other stylists there. I was very dismayed and asked Sara if she would be able to cut my hair. Not only did she step in when someone else showed an extreme lack of professionalism, but she cut my hair gave me exactly what I asked for and did a wonderful job--I love my haircut! I guess sometimes you are at the right place at the right time and now I have a great new hairstylist. Here's the thing. I have naturally reddish honey blond hair. I have never colored it or gotten highlights. Now that I'm in my 40's there is a lot of grey, and it is not as bright as it used to be. I made an appointment with Meg to get highlights because that's what I thought I needed to brighten things up. What she did instead is absolutely amazing. She created a color that is my natural color. It covers the grey with a blondish reddish hew. My hair looks amazing and when it grows out there are no roots. It blends naturally. I got my hair cut by Meg, and she was awesome!!! I have a ton of hair, most stylists get annoyed just by touching it, b/c there's a ton of it and it takes ages to cut and style, plus it's wavy/curly. Sara is a master-stylist; she is meticulous, empathetic, and supremely talented. I initially became Sara's client in 2005; she cut my hair for my wedding and while I was pregnant with my daughter. This is a review for Amina- She's Amazing! I love her! My back story- I was a hair model for this guy in June for a bleaching class, I had virgin dark brown hair (which I loved) I was looking forward to this experience, but the highlights he gave me were very thick strips (which I asked him not to do in the beginning of the class and made me look like I tried to do this myself with a kit at home), "accidentally" bleached my hair until it was a moss green color, and then bleach washed it back to blonde to fix his mistake... What was I going to do! How could I trust anyone with my hair anymore!! Enter Amina, my saving angel. I went to her to color my hair in October; I really, really wanted to do something to fix my terrible hair but was reluctant to let anyone color it again. I had always wanted red hair (I don't know how I let my friend talk me into modeling for a bleaching class. never again) so I brought pictures on my phone to show her what I wanted. I wanted my hair to be all one color (can you sense how much I disliked the blonde?) but she talked me into keeping the blonde and letting the ends be a lighter red so I would get more of an red ombre effect, turning a negative into a positive, which turned out ah-mazing. I loved my hair when she was done! Also, when she was washing my hair I got the best scalp massage ever! I was so relaxed, and at peace it was wonderful! Throughout the day I got compliments everywhere, and now the red has faded so nicely into a chocolate brown I still get compliments on how good my hair color is. About once a month (as the color fades) I get at least one person ask me "did you dye your hair?" I mention this because back in high school and college when my hair dye would fade it would always look gross and I would have to dye it again. Not this time. Three days ago I had the owner of a hair salon next to my job come in and ask me "who does your hair?" Basically! I love Amina; shes attentive, patient, talented, and I will continue to go to her for all my hair color needs. Amina, Thank you soooooo much! You're the best! read more

Leaving a review for Amina - SHE IS AMAZING! My previous haircut several months ago (done by another stylist not at Studio Hix), while cute was not what I had asked for (asked for a girly fauxhawk and got an asymmetrical pixie with an undercut in the back). I met Amina through a mutual friend of ours and after having talked to her about getting my fauxhawk from her I finally went in yesterday to get it done. She was wonderful! I showed her a picture of what I wanted, and she regularly checked in with me to make sure I was liking how the cut was progressing and if I wanted any changes to be made, as well as giving me tips on how to maintain and style it. I am absolutely in love with my hair now and I am so stoked to have finally found a new hair stylist to go to (planning on a return trip in the future to talk about some color!). I followed Jaimie here from Ecru Salon. Jaimie is the best! I used to hop around from stylist to stylist because I never found anyone I liked and trusted. Jaimie is a true professional - she's just plain good. But she also really listens to what you want and will offer ideas and suggestions (and talk you down from that really bad idea if necessary). You just feel like she's got your back. And she's very sweet and easy to talk to and get along with. The last time I went in with my long hair (thinned from recently having a baby) I was emotional and wanting a pixie. But since she knew I didn't have time to come in for lots of visits (and the texture of my hair meant it would be high maintenance) she looked through Pinterest with me and we decided on a cute bob that could still be put up. It is the cutest cut I've had in years. Tons of compliments. Maybe a pixie is still in my future, but only if Jaimie does it. read more
