We moved cross country and the moving company damaged two large, original oil/acrylic paintings with 5"x7" holes punched through them! Just made my stomach turn, as they were two of my most cherished paintings. After not being satisfied by another restoration entity that was recommended to me (after 5 minutes they simply said they would patch the holes and they would be 70% satisfactory), I found Sarah Murray online by searching for art restoration experts that were also artists. I found Sarah's website. She came to my house with her resume which was impressive for both restorative work as well as her own artistic endeavors. She took the time to explain in great detail what the options there were for restoring each painting, and that it would be a detailed and time consuming process to do it correctly - and she gave me a a very reasonable quote. It took about four weeks for her to restore both paintings. Plus, she had them reframed at a framing company (all part of the price.) When I picked them up I could not believe my eyes: you could not tell there had been any damage at all. I felt like both paintings now had two, talented artists part of "painting" them. I took an extremely damaged painting to Sarah to see if she could help. This painting is a family heirloom. It had hung in my grandparents' living room in Barcelona for years. After they both passed my aunt rolled up the painting and kept it that way probably 20+ years. Thankfully, she gave it my mom on a recent visit and we shipped it back to the US. I took it upon myself to find someone who could restore it. After visiting with one such person in San Diego, I found Sarah, and I'm so glad I chose her. Her assessment of the painting (which was dirty, dry, and cracking with paint chipping off in large chunks) and the detailed explanation as to what needed to be done was thorough and kind, truly honoring the legacy and importance of this work to my family. She offered three different estimates based on the level of work that could be done. She was responsive during the time she had the painting and clearly explained where she was in the process. When it was done, it was absolutely remarkable! It looks absolutely splendid, and I can't believe she was able to save this beautiful piece. We also worked with the frame shop that's beneath her studio to have the painting properly framed. Amazing work! I have had two painting restored and plan to do more. There was paint loss, flaking, craquelure, grime, sagging, bubbling,...you name it. Looking for someone to restore a nineteenth-century painting, I found Sarah Murray's academic degrees and practical experience impressive. Her careful examination of my painting pointed out a number of repairs that could be done without impugning the integrity of the painting. The painting was in dismal shape with more than six holes and disintegrating paint. We recently added two paintings to our collection. We assumed that they both would need conservation as they were done in the 1940's and showed some age. We took the first one to Sarah who we had researched and were quite impressed with her credentials and level of experience. These were valuable paintings so we wanted someone not only professional but who was able to properly assess the work to be done. To our surprise and delight she concluded that the first painting was in stable condition and in no need of conservation. We had it framed in a period frame downstairs and it looks outstanding. The second painting was of concern. It had been mistreated and stored improperly by the former owner. Sarah immediately correctly assessed the condition as needing a thorough cleaning and overall conservation but the original paint and canvas were still in good shape. She did the job reasonably and in an expeditious manner. Her written estimate and price were right on target as was her completion date. We also had the framer downstairs do the touch up on the original frame and they were outstanding as well. We will definitely be recommending her to our San Diego collector friends. read more
