I have been conflicted as to whether to leave a review because I kind of want the "hole-in-the-wall-iness" of this place to remain. Sensational. That's the short version. Doesn't look like a lot when you walk in, but the food speaks volumes. The Dal alone- specifically the tadka- what flavours! The momo (dumplings) are totally worth it. Sizzling platter- tasty as can be- the whole nine yards. We travel from downtown up here even though we have Indian options closer to us because it's really worth it. I know I'm gonna regret saying that next time I come here and there's thousands of people trying to get in, but there you go. I want them to flourish, even if it costs me a wait. Do it! read more

The food was simply just okay, I don't think I'd return to the restaurant. I asked if I could simply replace the rice with my butter chicken because I prefer seasoned rice opposed to plain rice with no flavor. The manager told me that I couldn't and that it's a $4 up-charge if I wanted different rice. The actual butter chicken was subpar, the spice level was needed to mask the blandness of both the rice and the sauce itself. The rice was even cold to the touch coming to the table. I'd say I'm quite disappointed with the quality of food for almost $20. I've had better elsewhere unfortunately. read more

This place is a gem of a place. They exceeded the customer service that we were expecting, owners and the whole team were very helpful in helping us with the menu. We ordered their highly recommended "Sizzler momo", steam momos and Chicken 65. Let me start by saying the momos were probably the best i've had in CHARLOTTE! These reminded us of the momos we used to have back in Nepal. My fiancé and I are momo fanatics and we were hunting for a place for 'The actual momo' and this well exceeded the expectations we had. Came to town for a work event and needed to find a good dinner spot. This was a great spot for Indian food ! The service was so welcoming and friendly. It really felt like a family owned vibe and authentic spot. I ordered the butter chicken and garlic nan. It was so very delicious, I ate the whole thing! What a great find for Indian food in Charlotte! My son and I went, had the chicken tikka masala, bindi, goat curry. The goat was tender and flavorful, you get to pick the level of heat, which I appreciate (I prefer on the hotter side). The bindi was so tasty, cooked perfectly, great seasoning. My son enjoyed his chicken. The tandoori chicken was tasty and all generously portioned, we took home leftovers. The service was friendly and inviting. Yelp does NOT lie. Sarangi currently has an average of 5 solid stars for a very good reason. This place is SO ON POINT. Having lived in major cities, I have been spoiled with super authentic Indian cuisine. So trust me when I say that Sarangi will not disappoint. I got their steamed chicken momos, chicken vindaloo curry, garlic naan, and gulab jamun. YOU HAVE TO GET THEIR STEAMED CHICKEN MOMOS. Wow. They were so full of flavor and juicy. And they gave TEN of them! TEN! The chicken vindaloo had such great, tender chicken pieces. And it tasted fantastic! The garlic naan was also very good. I have had better naan before, but for Charlotte, Sarangi's naan is A PLUS! Sorry this review is so animated. I'm just so excited to share this place with you. Finally, the gulab jamun was also very yummy! Side note: The owner told me that it's been very hard to get and keep employees. As a result, the wait can be a bit brutal. While visiting Charlotte, we tried this Nepali restaurant and were pleasantly suprised with authentic food and nice hospitality. We ordered these items- sizzler chicken momo, steam chicken momo, dahi puri chat, veggie chowmein, masala chai and Fanta. Since the tables ware fairly small, we appreciated that they didn't bring out all the items at once and brought 1-2 items at a time. The items are 'American spicy', so ask them for hot sauce if you like your food spicy. 1) Masala chai- 5 stars. Very rich and nice blend of spices made the chai a hot delight on a cold day. 2) Fanta- Made in Mexico, would have preferred a Made in India product for authenticity. 3) Chicken sizzler momo- 5 stars. 8 pcs of fried momos with chilli sauce. The momos were nice, big pieces with lots of meat fillings inside. Not very spicy. 4) Steamed chicken momo- 5 stars for 10 pieces of juicy bite-sized deliciousness. The momos were suprisingly oozing with juice. The achar is 3.5 stars because it was lacking the authentic spicy kick. It was probably made with American taste buds in mind. 5) Nepali Veg Chowmein- 3 stars. I felt this was my least favorite item. It was kinda bland and missing the mitho-piro authentic taste. 6) Dahi puri chaat- 5 stars. Little pani puri puffs filled with some stuffings and sweet yogurt. It was very refreshing. Overall, this Nepali restaurant is a great spot to try authentic Nepali/Indian cuisine, and will leave its distinct mark among the plethora of Asian restaurants in town. Having been to Nepal, Bhutan and India there is a great variety in seasonings from region to region. Sarangi hit many of the flavors we would expect while adjusting enough to hit most American pallets. Loved the momo's and the accompanying sauce and had good success with a number of sag dishes. I'll begin with customer service...AMAZING!!! Prior to walking in there was a table of about 12-14 people. They were sure to let us know that our food may not come out right away, and then they checked up on us so many times and offered their apologies. We really appreciated them making sure that we understood the delay in our food and just wanting to make sure we were ok. For that alone...I'd come back to give them another try. Well...the customer service was the cake, the food was the BUTTERCREAM ICING! The food was so amazing that we were telling others about them. We ordered the samosa appetizer, we both preferred the sweet sauce. I ordered the Samosa Chaat, which is a "street food" dish and My Love ordered the Lamb curry. We also had the butter naan and then some garlic naan(we clearly did not need this since we were both fit to be rolled out of there before even starting on it.) We packed up our garlic naan, and I'm currently eating it while typing this review. The food was just so delicious, and the medium spice level was perfection. We were on our way to another restaurant when I happened to check my IG and see a fellow Yelper bragging on this place. We drove one exit and got right back off. I'm so glad they are around the corner. We need more GREAT restaurants in the University Area. read more

Calling all Yelpers! If you liked Chapatay before, come back and re-review this place! Especially all those Yelp Elites who came to the YEE 2 years ago to sample the food. This place has rebranded and that comes with the business challenge of getting people to come back to this place and recognizing it. But the food is just as good...if not better than before. The menu is vast and you absolutely will find something you like. Partner and I came back to this place after our decision to transition towards a plant-based diet. And we've determined that Indian food is the most vegetarian friendly where we have never been disappointed. Our latest obsession at this place is the samosa chaat. Do NOT order this thing to go, it is absolutely best enjoyed served fresh. Crispy samosas cut up with chickpeas and drenched in tangy sauce and mellow yogurt. *drool* This place makes naan special. I could come here just to smell and eat bread. It's crispy and flakey (yet soft) and LOADED with butter (and garlic if you get that variety). We've also tried the veg thali (which is like a sampler for one) and a dosa with an onion/potato filling. The dosa tasted delicious and had a great texture. The service is always very pleasant and the seating arrangements make it feel very safe. They have booths with big plastic dividers or far away standalone tables. The staff has always been very good with wearing their masks from what I can tell. Tip: Don't forget to pick up after yourself - at this place, you put your plates in the back when you're done and then pay at the counter. Given that it had been getting very good reviews on Yelp, we decided to give it a try and were absolutely not disappointed. Although the service was a bit slow, mainly because there were a lot of people coming in, the food was worth the wait. Sarangi is worth a special trip, and if you are nearby you must try it. We stumbled on Sarangi and are so glad we did. We had chicken tiki masala (mild), chicken korma (medium) and butter naan. All were amazing. Medium is not very hot and was perfectly medium spice. The chicken was incredibly tender. Don't let the very casual ambience fool you. Editing to update. This restaurant's ownership changed, and some of my old favorite dishes, like the samosa chaat, are not as good. Sarangi is a different restaurant now from the old Chatpatay. But that's not necessarily a bad thing! Sarangi now has some Nepali dishes that I haven't seen elsewhere in town, even at a place like Curry Gate. For example, I just had the chicken thukpa, and it was excellent. If you're eating here, I recommend trying this or the other Nepali items. read more
