Still a good deal, but no longer the best bang for your buck any more. Probably why I don't visit as often nowadays. With that said, the quality is similar. Food is served on steamed trays, so you pick your choices over rice. Most of the flavors are still quite amazing, though some food lose their crispiness or a bit lukewarm sitting there. Regardless, always a good. On the negative side, the lady server is literally counting how many little shrimps are in my dish from one of my choices. It felt very odd when she took a shrimp off my plate and put it back into the tray. I asked if I could get a couple more calamari pieces and she said that she would have to remove more shrimp to do so. This was not how they use to operate, but I guess times are tough. On the other hand, I was given a lot more of the string beans with chicken liver, which makes sense since it's a cheaper protein. Btw, the fish is yummy, but you only get about 3-4 pieces. Therefore, I think you should order that item separately and not on rice if you want a decent portion. Bottom line, Khao Kang is no longer where I will go for a delicious cheap meal on regular basis. I saw Youtube videos talking about Khao Kang and I've been wanting to try this place for a while. I finally got a chance to try it on a day where there wasn't too much traffic going into Queens and glad I got to experience it. I'm not sure if they recently renovated their place, but it was nicer than I expected and there are a couple of tables where you can get your food to stay and eat in. Wasn't too crowded when I went thankfully. The people working there seemed pretty nice and friendly. I opted for the 3 dishes + rice combo, which was $17 (cash only). All the dishes looked really good and I knew I was going to get one curry + two other meat dishes. I think I ended up w/ the green curry that had thin sliced pork pieces in it, and I chose another dish that looked like ground pork / turkey. My last choice seemed to be a fried / battered fish dish w/ veggies like eggplant and string beans. The food was overall pretty solid. The green curry was very flavorful and a little bit spicy, but not overwhelmingly so. I think the fish + veggies dish was also a bit spicy. Everything had a lot going on flavorwise, which I enjoyed. I had a few criticisms though; the pork pieces in my curry seemed a bit overcooked, so that was disappointing. And the fried fish also seemed a bit overcooked because the pieces seemed chewier than they should've been. So I didn't feel like I experienced the dishes at their best, but I still enjoyed my meal. They also gave solid but not overwhelming portion sizes and I was pretty full at the end of my meal. Overall, I'm glad I got to experience Khao Kang but I was expecting more and I was a little underwhelmed. Also, $17 seems like too much in my opinion, expecially since they only take cash. Extremely warm and friendly is service in a clean and pleasant restaurant. Cash only. I ordered 3 items over rice and I picked a braised pork dish, a chicken curry, and some other type of spicy pork. I also got a Thai iced tea. The braised pork was extremely tender with soft, melt in your mouth fat. It came with a piece of fried tofu and a hard boiled egg, all of which had soaked up a huge amount of flavor from the braising liquid which was sweet and full of warm spices like star anise and cinnamon. The chicken curry was packed with ginger and other aromatics and had some heat to it. The vegetables in the curry are very soft and the chicken is tender. The employee asked me if I like spicy when I ordered the third dish, and I said yes because I forgot I was in a Thai restaurant. Although definitely at the high end of my spice tolerance, I couldn't stop eating this. It is not just plainly spicy, it is packed with lemongrass and other flavors that make you just want to keep eating. Sips of Thai iced tea, which is always delicious, helped keep my mouth cool. My main issue this time around was the food quality. It seems the entrees are prepared well in advance so the flavors can soak all day. While that sounds good in theory, it meant the freshness wasn't quite there, and the variety offered isn't vast. First time coming here and I am a fan now. Staff are soooo nice and friendly. Very accommodating and knowing it was our first time, she gave us samples of everything and that was an extra plus in my book. After trying almost everything, it was hard to choose only 3 entrees with our rice. $17 for rice and 3 entrees is decent compared to other places I have eaten. This place is so cute! It is basically like a little cafeteria with a bunch of side dishes laid out and you choose what you would like from what they have available. Because it was very early, my boyfriend and I split the 3 side dishes over rice and it was soooo delicious. We got a pork dish with an egg and tofu, this one was just ok, it was a little sweet for my taste but we devoured it. We also tried the Green Curry with Chicken and this was sooo good. Not spicy at all and the chicken was sooo tender and I might be biased because it was green curry but I love curries that have a coconut base. The last side dishes we tried was a Basil Pork dish which was also very flavorful. I think this was the highlight of the meal. We finished everything off with a nice cold chrysanthemum tea but if you have a sweet tooth, they also have prepackaged dessert available. The current 2025 pricing is a bit high but a solid 4 for the variety/flavor of meals. Here is a breakdown of pricing through the years for 3 choice over rice. 2020 - $ 9.50 2022 - $15 2024 - $16 2025 - $17 It's a niche concept for thai food. Not many pick-n-choose thai spots. I've tried their veggies, Curries, sweet/candied ish pork items, and other entrees. I like the food but the portions are getting smaller for the current price. Compared to other general non thai pick-n-choose spots, you can get ALOT more bang for your buck at other places (ie: 4 choice /rice & soup for $10 in Chinatown, $9 in flushing). I would suggest trying if you want variety and craving thai at the same time. I don't think its a must try BUT the food is good. I do enjoy it here. Came here with my daughter after the gym--this spot had been on my mind all week after watching Action Bronson's YouTube video featuring the pork dish and curry fish balls. We came in around 2pm for lunch and the place was empty, which actually gave us time to check out all the dishes before choosing our 3-meat rice combo. I think the pork was well marinated but gets tiring to eat after a whole. The jungle curry was very fishy and too spicy for me. The herbal fish was good with a decent kick. The thai iced tea had a lot of ice and when I finished my drink I realized 70% was ice. Overall, the food is ok but not hot. Portions were not as generous (except for the pork) as I would like for $17 and they definitely could have given more rice. Service was nice and staff gave recommendations. You get your food and grab a seat. There's a couple tables but it was relatively empty when I went. There was also a weird smell you'll notice the second you enter the restaurant which made the meal less enjoyable. Came here after I saw an action Bronson clip talking about how this place has some of the craziest flavors and spices he's ever had at a Thai restaurant in nyc and while this comment does have some credibility there are some serious cons about this place which hinder its potential. This place serves thai food, buffet style, which is typical of many Asian fast food restaurant, whats not typical however is how inflated the prices are here, at 17.50 for three items and a rice, this place charges nearly double what a Chinese 3 choice one soup spot would cost and with much skimpier portions too. Buffet style fast food spots have their shortfalls and this place is no exception, the second time I came back to this place, business slowed down considerably, with the slow down the quality of the food also went downhill as well since the turn over isn't as fast and some of the items seemed to have sat around for some time creating lukewarm, hard or soggy dishes depending on what you ordered. We also ordered a jungle curry here which was a little too fishy, bitter, gritty and grimey for our liking. No frills, cheap and quick Thai fast food. There's no shortage of Thai options in the area but Khao Kang is the quickest and easiest place to get a fast Thai lunch fix. The dishes are pre-made and served buffet style (by the employees) and you can choose from a variety of different flavors that pique your appetite. The Thai Green Curry Chicken is my staple - super fragrant green curry chicken marinated in coconut milk with rich Thai basil and ginger flavors. Honestly, I could get this by itself for an entire meal but that wouldn't be adventurous when they have so many other offerings. Their Pad Woon Sen (shrimp and eggs vermicelli) is also my favorite. It would be a sin to eat here without getting a drink - I recommend them all but usually stick to their Longan Juice to keep it on the lighter side. Prices have doubled since the first time I ate here (in 2017) and I feel that the quality has slightly gone down with food becoming greasier, hence why I've knocked down a star. I was not a fan of this. The noodles were soggy and too sweet for me. I like spicy food and so I got it medium spicy. However, it was not spicy. I didn't enjoy this dish. - chicken with rice and soup. This was good. Nothing special but it was made well. Our kids liked this. - moo ping (marinated pork) This was tasty. Meat was tender and juicy. This was perfectly cooked. - coconut ice cream- this was delicious - durian w/sticky rice and coconut milk - this was way too sweet for my liking. Note: At the entrance just outside the restaurant, there was a dead cockroach but we tried not to be disturbed cause it's not necessarily inside the restaurant. Before moving to Thailand my BF, who had been to Thailand several times prior, used to take me to Khao Kang and told me it was the closest food he had found to authentic Thai food in NYC. My only experience with authentic Thai in the US previously was in Cali at places my dad took me. He had also spent time in Thailand so knew what 'authentic Thai' should be and Khao Kang definitely held up to those standards but more importantly every time we ate there the food was rotating so always new choices and beyond delicious. Maybe it's not fair to Khao Kang but they are my gold star standard for authentic Thai food in NYC. I lived all over Thailand from the North (Chiang Rai) to the South (Satun) and West to East and every time I have eaten at Khao Kang I am transported back to Thailand. The only thing they are missing to make it complete is LEO beer. FYI the ChiangMai restaurant in Bushwick (on Flushing) carries LEO in case you are looking for it. The restaurant is dine-in or take-out and served cafeteria style as in you select what you want from the hot pans and they plate it and serve to you over the counter where you pay before you sit. Don't let the casual but hip atmosphere fool you as the food itself is the star. You can view the dishes through the glass buffet style setup and select 3 entrees with rice for $16. The servings are significant and the dishes rotate throughout the day so always fresh. My absolute favorite thing I have had here is their Tai Pla Curry | Southern Jungle Curry. The curry is cooked with a clear broth, red curry (red chillies, kra chai aka galangal, kaffir lime, lemongrass, shallots, coriander/cilantro, garlic, shrimp/fish paste, cumin), shredded mackerel fish, minced veggies, holy basil, and cashew nuts. It's definitely a very spicy curry but I love the heat with the insane umami that this dish delivers to every taste bud. A few other dishes I have had when eating here are: - Pad Kra Pao | Holy Basil Stir Fry with Pork: Thai stir fry of ground pork and holy basil which gives it the signature peppery taste and delightful aroma. - Moo Gratiem | Garlic Black Pepper Pork: Fried pork that is marinated in garlic, black pepper and coriander/cilantro roots. - Khao Neeo Mamuang | Thai Sweet Sticky Rice With Mango: Coconut milk infused sticky rice with ripe mango is a staple in Thailand and can be eaten as a meal or a dessert. - HOY/HOI JOR | Crispy Crab Rolls: Marinated crab meat, minced pork, minced shrimp with Thai soy sauce and sesame oil wrapped with tofu skin and fried. This is a traditional Chinese dish but can be found all over Thailand especially at the night markets as it's the perfect snack food late at night. Khao Kang in Thai is the type of restaurant that make a meal for people who in a rush hour, lunch break and after work and just want to take out and go home. I ordered the 3 sides plus rice and since one of the three sides didn't have much I was offered a fourth for free. Rice was perfect, chicken and livers with basil were to die for, spicy pork was good and spicy, curry chicken was delicious and the fish soup was the yummiest. I also ordered a Thai iced tea. This is another place that I bookmarked a really long time ago but never went...until now! Wow, what have I been missing?!?! This is such a gem. I will definitely be back SOON! Khao Kang reminds me of the Chinese quick meal places where they offer "3 items over rice". Entrees are premade and kept warm in a steam table. You can either pick 2 or 3 items over rice ($9.75/$10.25) or you can get an item as an entree by itself ($10.50, no rice included; side order of rice is $1.50). They also have appetizer/small snacks by the front register, as well as a refridgeration area with sweets/desserts. On this visit, we ordered the below items: - Green Curry w.Chicken (entree portion $10.50) - portion size was huge; this dish was delicious! Spicy but not too spicy. Fantastic flavor. Loved it! - 2 items over rice $9.75 (I chose garlic pork and basil fish). This comes in a container with 3 compartments. The bigger compartment has rice and the smaller compartments are for your chosen entrees. Both entrees I chose were good but not mind blowing. The garlic pork was tasty but a little tough. The basil fish was good but would have been better had they not used fried fish because the fried fish got very soggy. Still, it was very flavorful. - Tapioca Pearl dessert -soooo good! The sweetness really complimented the spicy meal. I really loved that the dishes were spicy enough to satisfy spicy food lovers (me), as well as those who can't handle too much spicy food. The only negative was I felt really rushed to pick my entree choices, even though there was only one other customer behind me. Good food that you don't have to break the bank for with an assortment of choices. I believe I had the ground pork which was spicy but nothing I couldn't handle. They are cash only if I remember correctly. read more

Ate here today for lunch with my mom. Me and my mom had ordered the fried fish, pork, eggplant and chicken curry with a side of rice. All had tasted good and my mom seemed to like it too.
