What a hidden gem this place is in Terre Haute, Indiana! Came here with a group from work. It's located in the heart of downtown, but almost not so visible from the street. I literally zoomed by here for years not knowing it was there. We came with a group of 8 and we were able to be sat right away around 12:30 on a random Thursday. Service was great, even with the big table, our server gave us lots of attention and all of our orders were correct. She kept our drinks filled and kept coming back to check on us. The menu offers something for everyone. I tried a burger with pepper jelly and it was fantastic! I say if you come, try something new, while they have "normal" options, I suggest getting something you can't get other places because it will probably be delicious! Pricing is pretty typical, maybe a little high for lunch but nothing crazy. They do have parking behind the building but it doesn't hold a ton of cars, so you may have to resort to street parking but it it is free, so that's a plus.

An Old Fashioned at the Bar

I came in and sat at the bar and had a great old fashioned, and got into a really nice conversation with the person next to me. The bartender was friendly and efficient. The ambience is special...just a classic, old bar-restaurant. If I spent more time in Terre Haute this would be a regular haunt.

This lunch spot is amazing. The inside is very nice and the bar is cute too! I ordered the chicken gyro with chips and it was amazing. The flatbread was so good and it had a ton of toppings piled on. My partner got the barbecue burger that was the special and it was huge! He loved it. We also got the lemon meringue pie, and it was incredible. The whipped cream was homemade and was so so good. Highly recommend! Heads up: the hours are short making this spot just a lunch location on weekdays!

Greek Salad and Bread...Manhattan in the background

This building is quintessential to the Terre Haute area, owned by a local family. The unassuming exterior gives way to a modernized interior with laughter and happiness. We happened in for a special night with a limited menu. The waitstaff dressed in ugly sweaters and traditional Christmas decor filled the modernist space. Speaking of servers, this point was possibly the most unfortunate part of the night. We waited quite a while at every turn, this is even taking into account the effects of the pandemic for businesses. The Mediterranean flair was noted even in the small menu, and the Greek salad was by far the highlight of the meal. That being said, there were other options from a more Americana set. The entrees were alright, a limited menu probably should bring more punch, but my Beef Kabob was hard to get off the skewer, had plenty of fat chunks, and was mostly salt and pepper seasoned. The drinks we ordered were also pricey and lacking in any complex flavors of cocktails, even traditional ones like a Manhattan and Old Fashioned (which I could have sworn I got the same drink). I would give this a four, as I know service can vary, but the cost was high and not something you expect from a costly meal. I hope to be back and give the place a chance in a normal environment, but you have to wait until close to the weekend as it is often closed during the week.

Neat hole in the wall at 5th and Wabash right on the edge of ISUs campus. The place has been here since the 1940s and has become a fixture in Terre Haute. Have driven by 100 times and never stopped. In town to see family and took a chance for a quick sandwich lunch. The place is full of history, clean, quiet, with made from scratch food and deserts. I had the tenderloin and fries. Hands down it was the best tenderloin that I've ever had. Made fresh in the restaurant. Pounded out nice and thin. Lightly breaded. Delicious. Fries were hand cut but a little "limp". Park behind the restaurant or on 5th street. It's well worth a stop.

Saratoga's take on the venerable fried tenderloin. A good sandwich with the fixin's but alas, lukewarm and limp fries.

The Saratoga is a landmark restaurant destination that I'm only starting to appreciate now that I've passed the half-century mark. It's not hipster or trendy or fusion fancy, just good independent Terre Haute food on the historic Wabash Avenue. Saratoga has a restaurant side and a bar/pub side, but they both have that classic feel, like a comfortable pair of saddle shoes, corduroy pants, or a 1950s Chevrolet. The menu has gone through updates over the years, the current one features several middle-eastern items as well as Midwest comfort food staples. Historic photos from Saratoga and Terre Haute past are prominently displayed on the walls. The food was above average, but still had room for improvement. The wait staff were busy but courteous, and made a point to get our two-top order in the kitchen ahead of the fifteen person family reunion. I'm in town two or three times a year, so I'll certainly stop in for lunch or dinner at least once a year to sample other menu items. Thank you Saratoga!

Food was very good. Finally a tenderloin sandwich that met expectations. Blue cheese nachos were also good.

It's dated in the best possible way: dim lighting, worn-in character, familiar faces, and that unmistakable local hangout atmosphere where regulars clearly outnumber first-timers. The highlight here is the Tweety Burger, and honestly, that's the reason to come. It reminded me immediately of the classic Midwest style you'd find at places like Minor-Dunn in Highland, Indiana. The patty is smashed thin and cooked flat on the grill, giving it those crispy edges and deep, savory flavor you only get from a well-seasoned griddle that's seen years of use. It tastes homemade--not engineered, not trendy, just a straightforward burger done right. You can tell they take their time with the food. Nothing feels rushed or mass-produced. The burger comes out hot, flavorful, and satisfying without trying to be gourmet or overcomplicated. No towering Instagram presentation--just a solid, honest burger that delivers exactly what you want from a local pub. Service matched the vibe perfectly. The staff were personable, welcoming, and genuinely friendly in that small-town way that makes you feel less like a customer and more like a guest stopping by a neighborhood spot. Charlie's isn't flashy. It's not modern. And if you're looking for upscale dining or trendy décor, this isn't the place. But if you want an authentic mom-and-pop tavern experience with a burger that locals clearly treat as a tradition, it's worth the stop. Best advice: stick with the Tweety Burger. Don't overthink the menu. Order it, enjoy the atmosphere, and experience a piece of local Terre Haute character. Not a destination restaurant--but absolutely a solid local classic you should try at least once.

Husband liked his omelette and tater tots. I got the gravy and biscuits and a side of bacon. The gravy was good, not the best ever but good. The bacon was crispy and flavorful. Here's what we tried: -Foie Gras Special: 9/10 - I just love foie gras and wow this one was cooked to perfection and the accompaniment of the cream cheese foam and the apple was amazing! I could eat it all to myself. -Denver American Wagyu 8oz: 8/10 - I did really like it, though I may have gone with Spiralis cut next time, as this was small and not as flavorful as I would've dreamed of. Decadent, of course. -Mac and Cheese: 10/10 - A perfect Mac and cheese. I don't think I could've dreamt of a better one. The flavor was outstanding, the pasta was al dente, and the cheese was just soooo gooey. It was addictive. -Truffle Butter Mashed Potatoes: 7/10 - While these were good, they had no truffle butter taste to them at all. In fact, we wondered if it had been mistakenly marked as truffle butter, but apparently it was correct. -Korean Corn: 8/10 - Cheesy, gochujang-ey, yummy. We were told a 20 minute wait, but we eventually were able to find a seat at the bar in less time. With as busy as it was, I was concerned food coming out may be impacted, but it came out quick. Allie was our bar tender, she was very friendly and attentive, shout out to her. First I started with a local beer, wango tango. I would call it a hazy pale ale. It was perfect for me. Had grilled shishito peppers. It was my first time to ever eat one, I loved them. I enjoyed them better without the sauce, but the wasabi Mayo did provide a nice kick. I ate the fried wontons with the sauce. We shared the crab Rangoon flatbread. It did not disappoint, and had a healthy serving size. I would get it again and again! Then I went with a comfort food, fried bologna sandwich. It came with a side, but the sandwhich alone was enough. I added a close pic of the sandwich, it had two thick cut pieces of meat. Impressive. It came with melted cheese, that was a twist for me, but I wanted to try it the way it was on the menu first. I eventually added ketchup, lol.
