I was actually quite impressed with J Ford's! We went for my brother's graduation and stayed in their rose room, and every member of the staff was amazingly friendly! Not only that, but the food was stellar. Here's what we tried: -Foie Gras Special: 9/10 - I just love foie gras and wow this one was cooked to perfection and the accompaniment of the cream cheese foam and the apple was amazing! I could eat it all to myself. -Denver American Wagyu 8oz: 8/10 - I did really like it, though I may have gone with Spiralis cut next time, as this was small and not as flavorful as I would've dreamed of. Decadent, of course. -Mac and Cheese: 10/10 - A perfect Mac and cheese. I don't think I could've dreamt of a better one. The flavor was outstanding, the pasta was al dente, and the cheese was just soooo gooey. It was addictive. -Truffle Butter Mashed Potatoes: 7/10 - While these were good, they had no truffle butter taste to them at all. In fact, we wondered if it had been mistakenly marked as truffle butter, but apparently it was correct. -Korean Corn: 8/10 - Cheesy, gochujang-ey, yummy. It's kind of like a Korean elote, so I'm not mad at all. -Gooey Butter Cake: 9/10 - I really don't know how to describe this other than sweet and yummy. It was also soft inside, which paired well with the crispier crust. -Chocolate Decadence: 10/10 - This just melted in my mouth. It was gooey and delicious and dark and rich and WOW. I'm a very picky foodie and never give a 5-star unless nothing is less than perfect! Can't believe it happens in Terre Haute! I've been living in Seattle for 26 years, go to New York and California often, and I always look for the best steak everywhere I go. Whenever there's a Japanese A5, I don't order any other steaks. Tonight I had one of the best steak dinner in my life!! First, when I stepped in, it felt very nice and I liked that it wasn't too fancy. I'd dress up for an occasion but not for good food. The seat was comfy with pillows, everything and everywhere was clean, including the fully-eqipped restroom. I order the beet salad whenever I see it on the menu, this one was by far the best!!! Each and every ingredient was fresh; the beet was perfectly cooked; the housemade dressing was amazing!!! It had the perfect balance of sweetness and sourness, and perfect thickness without any mayonnaise or too much oil! The burrata was a great addition without bringing down the taste of the salad. The prosciutto was a surprise! No fat, not too salty, fried just enough to act like bacon but tasted way, way better than bacon. It enhanced the flavors of the whole salad like putting a crown on a prince. I'm not a big fan of alcohol but I enjoyed my pineapple saketini! On to the A5 Japanese wagyu... what can I say? If they brought out this steak without telling me what kind of steak it was, I would've known it was A5 Japanese wagyu after one bite! No one can lie to me about a steak, one bite is enough to tell the truth. It was perfectly cooked, almost melted in my mouth! The seasoning was just right, enough to bring out the flavor but did not overpower a top-notch steak. They definitely know how to source, store, prep and cook a A5! More often than not, the A5 I've had before was ruined in some way. Last but not least, Melissa was a friendly and thoughtful server! Where to begin. The warm greeting at the door, the seating and instant service. Our server Patrick was attentive and promt. Our glasses always full, our meals (appetizer, salad, main and dessert) were all brought out with perfect timing. Our food..... We started with the seafood platter as an appetizer and just WOW! Next was the wedge for us both and the crack BP absolutely set it off perfectly. We both had Steak and it was cooked PERFECTLY! We finally found a place near us that impressed us consistently. We started going every birthday and every anniversary. It was a place we talked about all the way home 40 mins away how wonderful the food, the service and the atmosphere was. Im using past tense because we went last night for my 60th birthday. Wow another decade down and I chose J Fords to go for my birthday dinner. We got there and our waiter came over and introduced himself, very pleasant guy. Asked if we were celebrating anything and we told him it was my 60th. He came back and took our orders and we got the shrimp cocktail, we get that every visit. It came in a less desirable bowl and the cocktail sauce literally stung on my tongue. I couldn't eat it. We waited a while for our salads which has never happened there and when we finally got my wedge it was a wedge of lettuce with a few tomato halves. Dressing on the side. They brought the bread with the salad and they dont have the blue cheese butter anymore. Something my hubby loved. One of the waiters came and was starting to take my husbands soup when he wasnt even done with it. One thing we loved was when you went to J Fords you were made to feel like you were the only patrons in the restaurant. Our entrees took a while to come, I got the ribeye, my hubby got salmon. He said his first bite tasted fishy which if salmon is cooked right it should not taste like that. My ribeye didn't look like a 12ounce piece of meat, came out a little above raw (i ordered it medium and explained i wanted just a little pink inside) i sent it back to cook it more and it came back still pinker than medium. My baked potato had so much salt and pepper i didn't like it as much. The atmosphere seemed chaotic, louder and not like every other time we've been there. I ordered the decadent dessert and in the past they always brought it with a lit candle saying happy birthday to me. Even once I got it to go and they had it on a plate with a lit candle, had me blow out the candle and they boxed it up. Last night I didn't even get a happy birthday before we left. The waiter at the table behind us was telling those patrons he's from a little town, he's going to college and it just seemed like we were at Dennys or TX Road House, which doesnt sit well when you are spending over $200.00 on a meal. We will not be going back, between the food and service being subpar last night I do not feel it is worth it to throw money away on a restaurant that is no longer consistent with their excellence. It's sad to me because growing up in Buffalo, NY I had a favorite restaurant I chose every year for my birthday from a kid on up. This was a high dollar place for just average food. Service was also just average, and the drinks were not memorable.

Second visit- had a variety of food. The bacon wrapped dates were delicious. Had a French martini- icy cold. My daughter had the pomegranate and was very good also. Got a seasonal local grown salad- outstanding and enough for the table. Ordered truffle fries, a New York strip and a barrel cut filet. Superb. Mac and cheese also one of the best we've had. The complimentary sourdough was fabulous- with the blue cheese butter and balsamic dressing. Wasn't going to get a dessert, but we decided to try the chocolate mousse with ganache. Do not miss this! We went to this place this weekend and the staff was great and food overall was good. It is SUPER EXPENSIVE. $8 for a salad $12 for sides - the sweet potato casserole was incredible and $66 for an eight ounce filet that was not cooked to the temp I wanted. They charged $6 to add a small amount of bleu cheese on the filet. The thing that really pissed me off is that they charge a fee for using a credit card. You are way over priced on the food and too cheap to include the processing fee. When I go out to eat I have no problem spending money on a meal but for $250 for two people and for what we received was ridiculous. read more

After an emotional day, dropping our daughter off at Rose-Hulman, we wanted to treat ourselves to a nice steak dinner. And I must say we had an amazing experience at J Ford's. As soon as we walked in the hostess asked what name for our reservation and I said sorry we did not make a reservation. Another lady at the front said, no problem follow me and sat us in a booth. (Finding out she is one of the owners.) We ordered a lemon drop and pomegranate martini, and both were very refreshing. I'm sorry to say we can't remember our waiters name but he took very good care of us, told us about the specials and answered all of our questions regarding what to order. He checked on us multiple times to make sure everything was to our liking. We will definitely be back when we're in town to visit our daughter. My birthday falls usually in the weekend closest to Valentine's Day. Since my husband waits until the last minute for everything, he can't usually get a reservation anywhere. I was lucky this year as my birthday fell the weekend before so he actually got us a reservation at a place I really wanted to go for dinner! Since he made the reservation at the last minute, we didn't get the best table, but that's on him. I was just glad to get a table. We sat at the booths in the hallway between the bar, server area and dining. The only problem was it is a major thoroughfare for all servers. Fortunately we had 4 kids and can ignore most distractions. It was still a comfortable seat. The food and service was wonderful. Jordan was a very attentive server and we never lacked for attention or service. It seemed to be a team effort. Plates were cleared from our table when we were finished with each course. The Filet was excellent! It was well seasoned, tender and cooked perfectly. The "Diane Style" sauce was tasty, but I actually preferred the steak with out it and the serving size of thee sauce was way more than I needed! The Korean Corn was not your "usual" corn, but again it was a large serving size. I felt it was shareable with a friend or two. My husband enjoyed the Sole Chef's Choice of the evening. The sourdough bread was crusty and delicious. I absolutely loved the house salad and my husband said the blue cheese dressing on the wedge was the best he had ever had. My pet peeve in going to a restaurant is to be finished with dinner and then wait for your check forever and then wait to pay and then wait to get your card and check back to sign. That was not our experience here! It was 5 minutes from the time we were finished, had our check and were out the door. Thank you Jordan. Wonderful experience! First time going here and very impressed if I do say so. The smoked salmon and egg rolls were great and had lots of pizazz. I got the filet as my meal and it was cooked to perfection. Menu contained everything from salads, soups, steak, seafood and daily specials. Good food overall. Overly priced for the portion offered. Stopped in for a drink before dinner elsewhere. We had great and attentive service at the bar and good conversation with the bartender. I'll be back to try the food, but for now J Ford's gets a solid 5 stars on drinks and service. We had a grapefruit cocktail as well as an apple pear one that wasn't on the menu. I loved both, my boyfriend was more in to the grapefruit one, but either way we were both happy. I do wish they had more tequila options (bartender said only patron and Cuervo), being a tequila person there are a lot of cocktails on the menu I would probably like to be made with tequila versus vodka. read more

We were in town for the USAC Silver Crown races at the Speedway which unfortunately got rained out which is what led us here for dinner. WOW is the only adjective I can think of.... just WOW! This restaurant is executing on a very high level. Absolutely everything was perfect. The Lobster Bisque was sublime. The Wedge Salad was a masterpiece with the best Blue Cheese dressing I have ever had. The steaks were magnificent and the sides such as the Au Gratin Potatoes and Broccoli Casserole were amazing. And the service matched the great food and drinks. Are we at a Michelin starred bistro in Toulouse, France or in Terre Haute, Indiana? Honestly for two hours I was transported to the former. Holy moly, what a steak. I visited J. Ford's for a business dinner after hearing a lot of hype and was not disappointed. The atmosphere is classy yet casual, with a very amicable wait staff and enormous menu. We ordered lots of appetizers including the beef tips, two orders of lobster corndogs (there are only 2 per order), the portabella fries, and two specials of the night, a charcuterie plate and a smoked salmon dish. Everything was fabulous, but I'd like to give them a special shout out for the fries. As someone who tends to not like mushrooms, the portabella fries were surprisingly my favorite dish with the horseradish cream sauce. I couldn't get enough. Between us we ordered three salmon entrees, a filet mignon, and my ribeye, as well as two house salads, and additional shrimp appetizer, the special soup (house made steak chili), a beet salad, mac and cheese, the whipped potatoes, and the sweet potato side dish. I wasn't able to try everything because I ran out of room, but everything was excellent. My beet salad had goat cheese and candied nuts, and was fabulous, but the winner was the steak. It was buttery and the perfect temperature (medium rare) with that crust on the outside from the grill that just makes a steak worth every penny and calorie. I left with half a steak half a salad, a hummingbird cake to go, and a stomach that was entirely too full. I would definitely recommend this place if you want a fancy dinner and are in the mood for meat. Tl;dr: we went to steak night and we ate it right. My sister and I made a bet. Winner would get a steak dinner. And I won, big time. So, she fulfilled the agreement by taking my wife and I to J. Ford's. It was recommended as a fine place to eat. But, it far exceeded our expectations. Wasn't sure if we were going to get Outback here, or if this was going to be similar to a Morton's, Ruth's, or Fleming's. Well, it's much more than any of these. The steak is fantastic, but the rest of the menu is what sets J. Ford's apart. Despite the rather modest looking exterior, they've made the interior welcoming, warm, and practical. This is a small place, great for intimate dining. Raised on a farm where we produced our own beef is probably the reason why steakhouses never really impress me. Honestly, a really good steak isn't that hard to do. Unfortunately, a really bad steak is easy to do as well. Anyway, the high end steakhouse has the clean, white tablecloth, lousy bread, mediocre salads, and the standard assortment of desserts and dry wines, and it's all overlooked because the steak is supposed to be so good. And that's never cut it for me. Not when I'm paying $100. J. Ford's has a terrifically diverse menu with numerous specials, including appetizer entrees. We were treated to grouper cheeks, asian pork bites, seafood duo, and more items not to be found at the typical steak joint. And they were all terrific with the one common thread that each dish was ultra rich. But, I actually think the fifth star was earned by the broccoli stalk side. This is typically drenched in salt and butter and just ruined. Why? Cause it's not fresh. Not at J. Ford's. Just a freshly steamed stalk of broccoli simply served. Top notch. Further, the wine recommendation was just what we described, and the desserts were exceptional. J. Ford's does a great steak, but executes the rest of the experience beyond the main entree. This meal won me over and I'm a huge fan. It comes with a steep price, but I can't think of a place where I've gotten as much for the same price. My strongest recommendation. read more

Not impressed with the outside but going in that's about the only thing I can say was the worse thing. We ordered appetizers, she ordered crab cakes and I ordered the French onion soup. She loved the crab cakes and my soup was in my top 3. I used to go to different cities for bowling tournaments and if they had French onion soup on their menu, I always had to try it. So being in my top 3 was impressive. I don't recall what she ordered for the main course but I ordered their ribeye WITH bone marrow butter....AMAZING!!
