I firmly believe that my mom makes the best South Indian food. But Saravanaa Bhavan is probably the closest you can get to authentic restaurant south Indian food. We ordered a Saravanaa special (rice with a bunch of curries, your choice of poori or chapathi, pappadam and dessert) porrotta and curry, Mysore masala dosa, masala vada and mango lassi. Sorry I only got a picture of the masala vada cause we demolished the rest of food as soon as it came! The sambar, Chana curry and mango lassi were phenomenal. I loved how they stayed true to South Indian culture by serving everything in steel plates and banana leaves. My only complaints were that I wish the Mysore masala dosa was crispier and you shouldn't charge $2.99 for an extra porrotta. Like you can get an entire packet of porrottas for that much! read more

Absolutely the worst dining experience I have ever experienced in my life. My family and I won't ever come back. We waited 30 minutes and still didn't receive order our even politely asking multiple times. Finally we just left. Even though the waitress was apologetic but the manager couldn't be bothered. And it was even busy. People who came way after us were served and left while we politely kept asking if our order was ready. There are many many amazing Indian restaurants in the area. We really like the food here. It is obviously cannot be compared to the ones in Chennai but still the quality and quantity is good here. Their executive meal, dosa, paratha are my favourite. Pretty much everything we have tried and tasted good. Sambar vada is a must try here along with their mini idlis. Please try the south Indian delicacies here and they are my favourite. Bad service and bad food. Manager is a total jackass who shouts at the customers and thinks it's better to argue than be nice and solve the problem. Food is cold and orders take forever to come out. The staff members are instructed to hassle you if you have a water bottle on the table. So many rules and regulations it will make your head spin. I was told I can't bring a water bottle and it can't be on the table. Wtf? Also there's no option to split the bill. So if you have a table with more than one person you can't split the bill. The manager says it's the customer's responsibility to tell the staff you want to split the bill in advance. Wtf? This place has become absolutely terrible. There have been days the food has been great.. last night was another story.. too much cinnamon in bisi bele bath, the chutneys for dosa were awful - not sure how you can mess up coconut chutney?!. The Masala in the dosa has so much ginger that I had to eat it as a normal dosa. I had to request for some ghee for my child to eat the bisi bele bath and was told I will be charged - fine by me. I have dinned at their first original location in Chennai and this just does not compare. Your items will often not arrive together and sometimes appetizers take longer to prepare than entrees. The waitstaff is kind, but often frazzled by the amount of customers. I recommend the onion rava dosa. My pro-tip is to ask for a side of pickle with anything you order. read more

Service was prompt and friendly the weeknight I went. This was my first time eating South Indian food, and I would definitely go back! I shared one dosa and uthappam. I preferred the dosa pancake to the thicker uthappam. The chutneys they come out with are delicious and agree with this Westerner's palate. I go here all the time. Never remember to write about it. Just wanna dive into my food really. Your hands are your best cutlery here. So forget phones. I took a couple of my friends once and they won't stop going either, with more people. Not once a month kinda regulars but a few times a week kind. The food here is absolutely lovely! Get dosa! Or combos, their Madras coffee is one of the best I've had (skip Starbucks, really). Oh the salty buttermilk/lassi is something you might wanna skip as well. Too many cilantro leaves and salt and what not. Everything is delicious, if it's your first time though stick with masala dosa. You cannot go wrong with it. They don't have many desserts on the menu. I've only had their rava kesari which comes with combo plates. It was very good for the first couple bites, then it felt too sweet for me. My friends have ordered full size of it (4times as much), and happily finished it. I just stick with badam kheer (a thick sweet saffron flavored milk beverage) for my sweet fix. read more

The Parantha was tasty tho a bit thick. I really liked the chutney that came with the parantha. Naan was great. Aloo gobi was okay, liked the flavor but too much sauce too little veggies. The dosa was too heavy onion and not enough potato in my opinion. Everything was tasty but not my favorite place. My husband ordered a cheese dosa thinking it would be more paneer- it was straight melted mozzarella like a quesadilla. Not good at all. Our fault for not clarifying though. Usually you will not go wrong with the quality of the food here. Service is what sucks here to the core. If you have never experienced how a waiter comes and throws the food at you on your table, then this is the place. Getting something that you did not order is also not uncommon. I love South Indian food (dosas, idlis, sambar) and this is my go-to place when I'm craving it. Important to know this place is vegetarian only! The service is fast, there's endless amounts of options and the food is delicious. I've come here multiple times and there are some off days when the idlis are harder than normal but overall very consistent, tasty food. I especially enjoy the yogurt rice here and if you're really hungry the Thalis are a solid amount of food. It's a huge place but definitely gets busy on weekend nights and there's a wait. Highly recommend for anyone that is a fan of Indian food, especially South Indian food! read more

The OG for vegetarians! I love my meat but I'd stop eating meat for Sarvanaa Bhavan everyday for sure. Honestly the entire vibe of the place takes me back to India, makes me super nostalgic.
