Visited on 8/23 during a short road trip with my sisters. While the pastries were tasty, the service left a lot to be desired. We arrived around 2pm--an hour before closing--and it was clear the staff was more focused on cleaning up than on serving customers. We stood at the counter waiting to order as several employees walked past us without acknowledging we were there. When we were finally helped, the first employee--though friendly--seemed distracted and couldn't remember our coffee order. Before sitting down, we also had to clean our own table, as no one had wiped it after the previous guests left. This added to the overall sense that customer experience wasn't a priority. Later, when my sister went up to place a second to-go order, she was completely ignored. She stood in the exact same spot we had ordered from earlier, but the second worker skipped over her to help customers who had just walked in. When my sister politely pointed out she'd been waiting, the worker snapped that she was "standing in the wrong spot." How is anyone supposed to know where to stand if there's no signage or clear system? Overall, the staff seemed miserable and uninterested in providing a welcoming experience. Sadly, despite the good pastries, the lack of basic courtesy and cleanliness means we won't be returning. read more

Came here for their caneles because it is absolutely one of my favorite spots!! They are a local bakery with multiple locations one in Santa Rosa and one in Petaluma. I LOVE this place. I felt I should write a review at some point given how often I go here. I have been working from home and this is the only bakery/coffee shop I go to to get my work done. I live in Petaluma and it has been hard to find a place with a nice ambiance, good quality food, and good service to work in. I have not had a chance to try the other dessert items, but I can say with very little hesitation that they make the best laminated dough pastries (croissants, kouign amann, etc) in Sonoma County. I highly recommend the plain, almond, and chocolate-almond croissants. During the morning rush, there can be a bit of a line up, however, thankfully, it moves reasonably quickly. I always take the pastries to go, so it's always felt a bit odd that they have such a large dining space that seemingly mostly goes unused most of the time. I've loved Sarmentine from their start in Santa Rosa & constantly recommend them to friends and family so no complaints at all about the quality of their baked goods. But... They really must take a close look at staffing, especially during the morning rush. When there's a long line of customers and there's just one or two people working the counter, then a customer orders coffee ...then guess what? Yep, you now have a long line of pissed off customers that just keeps growing because now there's even fewer people left to serve customers. Some of your customers are retirees that can enjoy a leisurely cuppa and a croissant and that's great. But most folks probably have a morning commute still waiting for them and need to race off to work. Suggestion...maybe hiring a shift manager would help? Or If not, perhaps a bit of employee training would be good. read more

Sarmentine is our go-to bakery. Our favorite is the Abricotine and the Brioche (Orange) Bread.....which I make french toast out of regularly. This bakery makes me want to move to Petaluma! Great indoor seating area to hang out with a cup of coffee and a book. I got pastries to go. The Pan Suisse (which I don't think I have ever seen in the states) gets an A+ - soooo good! The fruit tartlet... what's higher than an A+?! Best I have ever had. Kinda wanted to cry when I finished it. The only disappointment was the chocolate eclair - the pastry cream inside is great but the chocolate frosting/ganache on the top is way too sweet. I got lucky and there was no line but as I was leaving many people walked in at once. Definitely better to get there early. There was a young woman behind the counter who was lovely in answering my questions and giving recommendations after asking her. I made the mistake of not realizing how many options exist as I was mostly focused on the initial fridge case. You have to walk through the full line to really see all of the options. I have purchased amazing breads and croissants from here. Today I had breakfast--buckwheat crepe. The small salad and dressing were great. As was the orange juice. The buckwheat crepe was terrible. Very dry crepe- which I assume is the buckwheat flour. I used the salad to moisten the crepe. Use some type of Alfredo, cheese sauce or hollandaise and white flour. Make smaller crepes, and roll them, like a typical crepe. read more

Some of the pastries and breads are very good. Some not so good. The pear almond tart was very tasty, perfectly baked. Croissants seem short on butter but are crunchy. The vanilla eclair was very disappointing: it was a mass of too-sweet glaze accompanied by a little pastry cream. Could hardly taste the latter. (To be fair, I have yet to find a Bay Area bakery that *can* make an eclair successfully.) No outdoor seating and not near downtown. read more

We used to drive to the Santa Rosa location a couple times a month because it's so fantastic. So we were very excited when we heard the Petaluma location was opening. We have gone multiple times over the year or two they have been open and it has always been a bad experience. Not enough seating even though it's an open space. Hard to figure out how to order and you can't even see the menu board from where you do order, and now on four separate visits, our hot food from the back has been forgotten and we've either never received it and had to request our money back or told oh it's coming and then it miraculously appeared two minutes later. Honestly, today will be our last visit to this location and we will continue the trek up to Santa Rosa to enjoy Sarmentine experience that we love. read more

I chose one of their specialty from Halloween and was disappointed - the croissant layers were dry and crunchy - I was eating layers of chips. Delighted to have Sarmentine in Petaluma! No need to drive to Sebastopol or Santa Rosa anymore. They are real French pastries not only do they look good they also taste delicious! Saint Honoré, flan Parisian , fruit tartelette, canelé ... all just what you would get in a French pâtisserie! The croissants are just perfection! Flaky and buttery, yum!
