Let's start off with the positives. The store is big with plenty of space. I love the different varieties of fabrics and colors. The possibilities are endless! The lady Bo I believe is her name was very kind and took the time to take my crappy of ribbon measurements. She told me I would need 2 yards. Each yard was $9.99. I believe it was a decent price. The only negative was Halina. She was very rude, but in a calm voice. She's an older lady, but that doesn't excuse that type of behavior. She spent 20 minutes or even more arguing to me about the damage I pointed out on a different item I was going to purchase. She said "if you come to shop here then you will get damage fabric. That's why the price is so low. Go to Joanna's if you want perfect fabric." I couldn't believe she was telling me go to another store. I told her I didn't know of another place that sold fabric. The only reason I found that store was because I googled "fabric store AZ" and SAS store came up. After that she kept saying she knows fabric and that she use to work at a wedding place. I said "that's good." She continues to ask me what I was going to use the fabric. I told her I needed it for photography and video background. She decides to tell me "that won't show up. You don't know fabric. I know fabric and I've been doing this for a long time." By this point I honestly was annoyed and hurt. I didn't want to argue with an older lady. I was always told respect your elders and I always did just that. So I stayed silent the only thing I told her was "what is the total for my order?" She was ringing me up, but stopped frequently to talk about the same things above. That she knows fabric and I don't know, she worked in a wedding place, etc. Finally I broke and quietly and politely I said to her "you know fabric and I know photography and video. So yes it will show. That's ok if you disagree. And it really seems like your trying to make me not purchase anything." She then says "oh no I am trying to help you. Did you check the sequin if there is any damage?" I told her yes thank you. She then says "ok good because you have yo check all fabrics before you purchase because there is no returns or exchange." In my mind I'm thinking ok so you tell me to check for damages, but when I told you about a fabric that is damage I can't get another one and you tell me to go to another store! I tell her "mam what is the total for my purchase please?" I honestly was at a point that I was going to leave and not purchase anything. The worst thing was that my baby was there watching this lady be rude. I ran out of there so fast. Final thoughts, it's a shame that I was treated so poorly because the lady previously, Bo was so nice. The place is great. I would recommend you to purchase fabric there, but with caution. Uncertain if I actually will go back. If I do return I will stay away from Halida. I don't need that type of energy around me. The reviews are pretty spot on. SAS does not have AC it has old school swap coolers. It's not AS hot as everyone says it is though. I have gone into SAS lots of times and have never come out empty handed. Some of the quality does suck. There is lots of stuff to look at. Some of it is really vintage and horribly ugly but some stuff is great! I have found Alexander Henry fabric here and Nightmare Before Christmas too! Lace trims, normal trim, elastic, and zippers are all GREAT prices and they have a large selection. I do recommend shopping here but only if you have the time to dig and walk around. Also You can't be looking for a specific thing because good luck! The staff has good days and bad days. Sometimes they help you but most of then don;t even sew so they have no idea what you are asking about! read more

SAS is CHEAP, BUT you have to RUMMAGE through the piles and piles of remnants and bolts of fabrics....and ONLY, if you have the time. The foreign women that work there are NOT friendly at all, plus they are SUPER SLOW. It's even worse when there are one or two customers in front of you in line with PILES of fabric that need to be cut....better bring a book to read while you wait! If you are in a hurry, you'll be better off going to JoAnn's with a 40% off coupon. If you have time to search for something unique, then count on spending a few hours here (cups of buttons are cheap too)...I don't remember if they accept credit cards. read more

for whatever insane reason, I decided that I need to re-stain and re-upholster my family's ancient dining room table before i hauled it off to grad school with me. i had a design concept. i knew exactly what i needed to achieve "the look". but ALAS! i couldn't find THE fabric - that perfect blend of gray-green-blue with the right amount of texture to perfectly offset the ebony wood stain.... SIGH! what's a girl to do? luckily, my mom had passed by SAS and suggested i go and take a look. so i drove down 19th avenue and parked in their oddly directed parking lot, walked in... and almost passed out! they don't have any a.c.... yeah, i know! it's phoenix! it's the middle of summer! and all you have are some FANS?!?! anyways, aside from the risk of heat stroke, i HIGHLY recommend stopping by if you need some fabric or trim. the selection is.... mind-bottling (for you zoolander fans). every shade of the rainbow! every type of fabric you could want! it's a fabric wonderland! i walked out with over 20 yards of fabric for $30! and not some cheapy crap quality fabric, either. definitely worth a stop - if you don't mind the heat and digging through the mess. but be warned - sometimes fabrics get missplaced, so you might end up paying more (or less if you're lucky) then you originally thought. read more

You really have to dig to find stuff, and sometimes even then you can't get what you're looking for. They have SO MUCH. And they recently expanded their store - only 2/3 of the building was used for selling fabric and the back third was for storing their shipments, etc. but now they knocked down part of that back area and are in the process of putting even more fabric in there. Much of it includes huge bolts of felt. And not just the 'normal' colors - they've got a pretty good selection there. The trim selection is great. You'll notice that you can spend a fortune on home decor when you shop at JoAnn and other such places. But here you save a great deal. The only reason SAS loses a star from me is because the ladies here are not always friendly and you have to wait a long time sometimes to get your stuff cut. Also got frustrated they changed their policy on the fabric only on the ticket. They want all the crap you have in your basket on the ticket now. Visited this place for the first time today and love it! The only negative I would point out is that their selection of quilting fabric was really small - a little disappointing since that's what I was shopping for. That said, I still left here more than happy! They had Tons of fabrics in all kinds of materials and patterns. The other reviewers are right - it takes a little digging, but you will leave with what you need! They also have a giant selection of other crafty things like ribbon, lace, buttons, little things like flowers to attach to your project, tassels, etc... The prices seemed decent, with a lot of clearance items and pretty good discounts on remnants if you don't need a gigantic or perfectly shaped piece of fabric. They also had pretty cheap scrap fabric (good for quilting or any kind of patch-y patterned project maybe?) One random tip I feel is important maybe: I used my navigator when finding this place (I have an android phone so I guess it would be via Google maps) after just clicking on the address on yelp, and it kept telling me that the store was on the west side of the road when it's actually on the east side. Seems silly but I kept searching the roadside for a fabric store tucked behind a gas station and couldn't find it. Just a heads up! I go to SAS Fabric about once every 3 months, all but 1 time I have found exactly what I am looking for. The 1st time I went was to purchase material to make reusable lunch totes as a party gift for my daughters b-day party. They had exactly the fabric that I was looking for and I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of fabric that was there. The other reviews are correct, this store is not a quick shop. You need to come in here with lots of time on your hands. Searching through material can be daunting, but if you keep an eye out you'll find what you need. I have noticed that everything is sectioned off pretty well. Girls pink material is in one spot, team logo material is together, etc. It is also sectioned by types of fabrics. I have not seen any great quality fabric that I would really make any clothes for myself out of, it all seems to be fairly cheap. But, it is the perfect place to come if you are into quilting or making baby blankets. I am going this weekend to look for Disney fabric to make my daughter a summer dress and matching bandanna for when we go to Disneyland in May. I'm sure I'll find a selection of material that will suite that purpose. All in all, this is a great store. But, you have to be able to look past the warehouse feel. I haven't found the service to be necessarily rude, but I have noticed a bit of a communication barrier, as I believe that many of the workers haven't grasped the American language. read more

I had a terrible customer service experience! I need a certain amount of fabric on a bolt . Of course, theirs no way to know how much is their. The counter girl rolled it out for me but their wasn't enough of what I needed. She ask if I was going to buy it? I told her no, that that wasn't the amount I need. She looked at me and said "what am I suppose to do with it"? Then she walked over the the other girl and started bad talking me, right in front of me. Even though these reviews are mainly about the products (which they had a wide variety of crafting supplies), one of the cashiers was just so insulting. Little bit of an older lady, me and my sister went to get buttons for a mini-project and when we went to the register the lady charged us in a high pricing for each button. I cannot remember the individual pricing but all I know is that I had to lower my number of buttons from 17 to 3. And that's not it! Once again, the cashier tried calling us out on how we haven't checked the prices of our any of our products. Another employee noticed what's going on and apologized for the inconvenience giving us a discount. This happened I believe about a year ago and I haven't gone since. I love this place so much. The prices are amazing and they have a large selection of fabrics. The staff is incredibly patient. I bought a ton of fabric and they quickly cut it all. The only downside is that it's a gamble finding specific colors. They'll either have it or have nothing close. If you're looking for general colors, you're good! read more

SAS is the answer to your S.O.S. for interesting fabric and notions at VERY affordable prices. Yes you have to hunt and yes the service is somewhat slow (cutting areas separate from cashier and sometimes there is a line) but for variety and price this can't be beat. The Indian School (near 12th Street) location is the most orderly and well-lit of all the SAS's (they remodeled/rebuilt/reorganized after a fire) . The 19th Avenue (south of Peoria) has the largest selection of merchandise. I noticed they also have a little bargain section in the back with a separate cash register just for that section of clearance stuff. Recently i saw a large quantity of some unusual fabric at SAS but didn't get any as i did not have an idea in mind about what to do with it. Less than a month later I opened up the latest Vogue fashion magazine and spotted a Ralph Lauren skirt in one of the ads that was made with THE EXACT SAME unusual material. Maybe what ended up in SAS was a mis-dyed lot or something, but I was pretty impressed that some of the high fashion designer remnants somehow make their way here to Phoenix Arizona...the unusual dyes and textures they sometimes have in the store may look too weird if you are looking for something simple to make a basic sewing project, but in a couture context they might definitely work. It is common to see interior designers, set and stage and costume designers, fashion design college students and project runway wannabes prowling the aisles here. I have met people in line who fly here from out of state once or twice a year JUST to shop at SAS. When people come to visit from out of town, they often ask "take me back to SAS"... Buttons and zippers are a bargain here, as is elastic. trims are hit and miss and the vintage (very vintage, 1960's?) are liberally mixed in with the modern. Some of the stuff has probably sat on the shelf since SAS was born but other things move in and out pretty quickly. This is one of those "see it now, buy it now" places that might not have the same items in stock if you come back later. They don't sell sewing patterns here so if you have a specific project in mind you need to have an idea of the yardage you'll need before you walk in the door. Fabric content info and care instructions are nonexistent as most of the fabric is folded and doesn't come on a bolt. Make your best guess or (as i do) prewash and throw everything in the dryer so at least when it comes out you know what you are dealing with. Good things to bring on a trip to SAS - your own tape measure, a little flashlight in case you want to check the color of something up close, and a sense of adventure. read more

yea i'm a fan of SAS, not because i sew, but because this is my favorite russian bride hang out. just kidding. but i think you have been shopping here for awhile you will get that joke. i occasionally make books, so i always pick up fabrics from SAS, they are cheap as all get out, and the quality on some of it is pretty good. it's like the Ross of fabric stores, the overhead is really low, and nothing is sorted..well...and the quality ranges from good to bad, with the occasional, wow. both good and bad. lots of little things like buttons and other neccesitys for that baptism dress, or the prom...or umm. a wedding. cool place..even with no AC. read more

Cheap fabrics, so many amazing notions, weird patches from the 70s, leather scraps and everything you didn't know you wanted. The women that work here are not friendly though - being in retail I'm huge about not revisiting a place where you're treated poorly. I love this store. Everytime I have went in here I have found what I need and more. They have a little bit of everything and even things I have never seen before. Some of the stuff is a little bit cheap quality but they also have some very nice fabrics Yes, you do have to dig through racks and bins to find some of the things you want but that is half of the fun. I am from LA so this place reminds me of the Fabric District. The prices are great! Yes, The service is slow but I think the money you save is worth it. Yes, It is super hot in the summer. I have been in here in mid day in the dead of summer and I thought I was going to die! Wear comfy breathable fabric if you plan on shopping here in the summer cause this building is HOT HOT HOT! I have bought hair accessories here too! They were like 1.00, If I would have bought them at Claire's or something they probably would have been 20.00 or above. Last time I was in here I noticed that they have a clearance section in the back. I never knew it was there and will have to check it out next time im in there. Ok so the store is not the cleanest place in the world, it actually looks like an old warehouse. The staff is ambivalent at best though the woman at the cutting counter was very nice. But the fabric selection is great and super cheap. I came for some fabric for a Halloween costume and ended up with this beautiful iridescent green fabric that i got for a dollar a yard. I wouldn't suggest going if you are in a hurry but if you are looking for something unique this is definitely the place.They also have rolls of chain and bins of buttons at great prices. read more

I adore SAS Fabric Superstore! I lived in Phoenix more than 20 years ago and was constantly in the store. I have since moved back to Denver, but every time we're in the valley, this is one of our "must go" to stops. I have made exquisite Victorian and ballroom competition dresses with fabrics from SAS. I even made my son a Civil War uniform that he wears proudly to Victorian balls. I also found religious fabrics that my mother used to make altar cloths for her church. They also sold me a very heavy wool from which I made a dress coat that I've had to re-line twice, but the wool is in fabulous condition and heavy enough for cold Colorado winters. I wish they had an outlet in Denver! read more

It's not for everyone, but if you love a good deal and are willing to put up with a "warehouse" environment, then this is the place for you! I've been shopping at this SAS location for many years and they are at their best lately making improvements in shelving, self serve cutting for certain lace, adding new quality fabrics like stretch satin in the back area which has expanded. Their website is even nicer and they have a FB page. The selection is still just as awesome in variety and in the great prices.
