This shop is small but mighty! They pack in so many different threads and canvases into their space. They always have tables full of stitchers in joyful conversation. I have been in this store the last two Saturdays and loved it each time. They have some great 50% off canvas for folks like me that are just getting started and don't want to break the bank right out of the gate. I was just standing around my first time in with a canvas in hand and stretcher bars that I didn't know how to use. One of the staff came over and said "you look lost, come with me" and took me over to the table to check the size of the canvas and make sure that I got the right bars to fit (I didn't initially). She was very helpful, even taping the canvas and putting it on the new bars for me. I can't wait to come in again! The staff was delightful both times. read more

The Family Art Needlework shop is a warm and welcoming place where everyone is so helpful and friendly. The introduction class is amazing, you learn all the basics and from there you can do any canvas you wish. The selection of painted canvas are incredible and fun. read more

I dropped in a few weeks ago as I had just started my very first project and wanted to see if I was actually doing it right. The lovely ladies in this shop all had some helpful tip to share with me, and gave me so much confidence as I started my first Christmas stocking! They invited me to their next needlepoint stitch club night and I put it on my calendar. When I arrived, there were nothing but happy faces and lovely people to greet me. It was such a great night. The selection of canvases, tools and fibers seems to never end, but somehow always stay orderly. And the people in charge are so warm and knowledgeable. I feel like I found my people! I would highly recommend to anyone stopping in for supplies, or wanting to gather around during stitch club and share company with amazing people. read more

I love the fact that it's not just a super fantastic needlework shop but it's the charity's that they support. The Stepping Stone Foundation supports by keeping kids in school & they do a super job of it. The staff are all volunteers & a really great group of people. The ladies from Family Arts could not have been more welcoming. I was visiting from out of town and a friend recommended that we stop by the store to check it out. It turns out that the shop is volunteer run and that some of the proceeds from the sales go towards a scholarship fund! The shop seems to be roughly 60% needlepoint and 40% knitting. As a knitter, I'd say that they had really nice yarns but I wouldn't consider this a one stop shop for your knitting needs. Still, I'd return to this shop if I were a local due to the wonderful customer service, inviting atmosphere, large "workspace," and air conditioning. read more

I recently did an online order from FA as I live out of state. To say their customer service was amazing is an understatement. It was a small order but their treatment of my order and crediting me for the difference in the price when it dropped between the time I ordered it and the time they sent it was an unexpected surprise. Update to this review: our dog recently threw up on the other one of these bargello pillows and Someone Who Was Not Me decided it would be a great idea to clean the pillow by throwing it in the washer. Naturally, the pillow was destroyed. I took it over to Family Arts without any big expectations, and they did an unbelievably good job of restoring it. Also, when I took the pillow in, everyone gathered around and had a good time laughing with me about people who throw needlepoint pillows in the wash and they were also most cordial when I came in to pick it up after it was fixed. I don't know where reviews are coming from about the shop not being friendly, but my experience has been the opposite. If I ever get to retire and take up needlepoint again I'm going to start hanging out here. read more

The website said their store was open from 10-2. I drove 40 minutes and was met by two ladies saying the store IS NOT open --like the website said--but they have curbside pickup. This doesn't help someone new to their store!!! I'm going back to QUAIL RUN, even though it's a drive for me----it's better than what I just experienced here!! read more

After working on and off for 13 yrs on a complicated, highly beaded, counted, needlepoint frame weight, I took it to the shop for finishing. I needed a bean bag lining, 3 lbs. copper-covered buckshot, moire backing and then piping. Julie, the Mgr, stated she wanted to take a pic of it and display on their website. She promised to personally send to Oregon to a Finisher who is known for working on complicated pieces. The not-for-profit is run mostly by volunteers and one of them sent (volunteers perform this task) it out locally. It came back in absolutely disastrous condition. Badly misshapen w/ huge gaudy metallic piping with glue. I cried. Off it went to Oregon. Came back with correct shape but without piping. I tried to reach Julie, Mgr, and volunteer wouldn't put call thru and hung up. Off it went to Prescott. Was unable to determine when it was picked up or who arranged it. Barbara, paid worker, told me they don't keep those records. I was frustrated and said that was unprofessional and cavalier. She said it had been done that way for 50 years and if I didn't like it to go somewhere else!! After 8 mos., and five 36 mile round trips, I finally took it home. Piping was pretty and the integrity of the shape was restored. All the gold had been rubbed off the bead tops (My friend and NP shop owner in WA State used the same beads and years later they are still beautiful.) and discovered an opening in the seam!!! A plastic bead and a buckshot were visible. There was no pillow and they used plastic. I cried. I will have to figure out a way to close up the opening. Because no lining had been made, this means it will suffer damage years later!!! I am devastated. I can barely look at my beautiful little frog. It was to be an heirloom When I phoned Julie, Mgr., she didn't want to hear and hung up. I was very courteous. Phoned back trying to mend any bad feelings and she hung up again. I again had been very courteous. Thought she would want to know these things. Very harshly she said, "In the future take your finishing some place else." I was flabbergasted. Isn't this what Mgrs. are for...to help resolve or to listen to feedback? I wanted nothing more at that point except to tell her about what I had found. I had done nothing wrong. I do not treat people in this manner so it was a stunner. As a retired Contract Administrator for a Fortune 500 company, I would have been demoted or fired for treating employees or customers in such a manner. I will never return to this business. Very unprofessional. You are taking chances with this shop. They do a ton of pillows, wall hangings and stockings which are easy to finish. If it's complicated, forget it. read more

I was very excited to learn about this shop from the "New Times Best Of". I ventured in on a Tues. morning and with some difficulty I found someone to help me. I am a basic knitter and am happy with that. I bought some merchandise and off I went to knit. Upon trying to return to expand my knitting three times I have gone to the shop and three times I have not received any assistance. Once I left work early and arrived at the shop at 3:50, they close at 4. I went on a Saturday to be told "there were no knitters there, and to come back on Wed. eve at 5 and the knitters will be there to help me." I know exactly what I want to make I just need some assistance. This eve. is Wed. I went into the shop and there was a knitting class. I explained I didn't want a class just some assistance. I was told by the knitting ring leader "this is my class, $65 for 6 classes, we knit 5-7." I explained I didn't want to knit i wanted to buy wools and go home and knit. Four times she repeated herself regarding her class. I get it is her class and she is not there to assist with questions on the retail level. What I don't get is who is? Volunteer run and charity driven is a primary factor I wanted to support this store. However I can't seem to give them my money. I guess if you don't want to be in some sort of cult like stitching class this is not the establishment for you. It saddens me because the idea is great, the merchandise is beautiful however customer service and assistance is necessary even if you are a bunch of volunteers. I guess I will find another shop that will assist me by helping me and take my money. read more

I love this place!!!!! I couldnt find it and kept calling the store for directions they were very kind and polite. I told the lady that helped me so much I was really surprised by how friendly she was. All the workers are volunteers!! Non profit company that is really organized and has such a collection of yarn to choose from. This will be my place to shop for special projects and any projects of mine versus going to michaels or even walmart for yarn. Much higher quality! Will definitely be coming to this place more often. read more

Large selection of beautiful knitting and embroidery supplies. Small locale. Run by volunteers only. You may experience some difficulty if you're doing something complicated in terms of payment but they are sweet as can be. They're interested in what you're using your supplies for and may offer suggestions. Also if you do a lot of knitting or embroidery they do have a frequent buyer discount club card of some sort. As this was my first visit and we live thousands of miles away this was not applicable to me. Definitely worth checking out for the serious stitchers or the beginners looking for some tips and tricks and great quality products. read more

A lovely little needlework shop for the serious aficionado. All of their materials are top notch with prices reflecting the quality, maybe even a little more price than quality. My concern with the staff in the shop is that they were a bit condescending if you weren't interested in paying the higher prices. I was in with my elderly mother who has a ton of needlework experience and she and I both felt that their attitude was uncalled for. read more

I have shopped here off & on for years. I am always amazed I return due to the awful service & attitudes but with so few Needlework shops in Phoenix I have bit my tongue & gone. I recently inquired about a Special Order Canvas for my Birthday. I FB them & called both. After 2 weeks of trying to get them to help me they responded by leaving me a phone message stating they had No Idea what canvas I was talking about. I have ordered from them before. The canvases are hundreds of dollars & I fail to see where the confusion came in considering I had Put the comeplete title & artist in my facebook message. I have ordered the canvas elsewhere. I don't know if it is just me they seem to dislike without knowing me or if it is just being outside the clique that is the issue. Order online unless your a Stepford Sticher. read more
