Wish I could give a 5 star but can't. Bacon had great flavor! Biscuits were heaven, gravy all though different than I am use to was delicious! Had a nice breakfast with my daughter and my twin granddaughters. We were sat right away and offered drinks. Dining with two 1 year olds. is always a challenge, but the staff was very accommodating. We ordered breakfast, and the food was served quickly. My daughters omelette was very good and I had the standard Farmer's breakfast with sassy hashbrowns, which are excellent. overall it was another wonderful experience at this local breakfast establishment. read more

This is another great place to have breakfast in Salem, Oregon. It was busy on the Sunday morning. We waited for about 20 to 30 minutes before we got a table. The prices were between $4-16 dollars. Nathan, our server was very helpful in sharing about their breakfast menu. My wife and I split our selections. We had the "The Works" which consisted of several different meats, vegs, and eight eggs. Best breakfast I've had in awhile! Kandi (Kandice) our server was absolutely incredible! They were super busy but between her, the manager who kindly checked on us, and the speed of the kitchen, we got our outstanding food very quickly! I ordered extra bacon and potatoes because of how quality it was. The corn beef hash was cooked to perfection, as was my moms egg's benedict. Its the home of the world famous french toast, and I can tell you it deserves the title. Their home made bread with the hot maple syrup is heavenly. We also got the Caprese Bene which was tasty, a couple of egg scrambles that were very well made and a banana and chocolate crepe which was great as well. Love love loved Sassy Onion! I went with a friend for lunch and was really impressed! The food was fabulous and the service was wonderful! Everything was nice and clean and the food was beautiful when it arrived at the table! We ordered a chicken sandwich and a burger and split them so we each try both... they were both really good! I will definitely go here again, in fact, we are already planning another "ladies lunch". The only negative thing I have to say about Sassy Onion is that I wish they were open for dinner too! Haven't been here in a while so this was a good opportunity to refresh my perception. I didn't use the bathroom and the country style hash browns were not especially hot. The service was pleasant, engaging, and available! Overall the menu was unique and wonderfully varied. The food was very good but I will address opportunity because this could very well be the best breakfast spot in Salem, but big today. I ordered the promo which comes with a thinly sliced and over cooked prosciutto and mushrooms. Prosciutto has a nice flavor and texture if not turned into fried baloney. I must have misspoken because while I said I really liked the idea of mushrooms the server must have though I said I didn't want them. The potatoes were not over cooked and seasoned just right but not hot. The poached eggs were over cooked and closer to boiled than properly poached. But there is no question that I will come back--hoping that everything will be perfect. This was really a 3.99 star experience and neck and neck with the competition down on 17th. read more

I love how often they have new specials. We had a nice time here and the food was good although we didn't like the banana bread french toast. It was very dry. The omelette was great, I always love their jam and breads, and our flavored lemonades were perfect. The owner was yelling into the kitchen that the breakfast burrito was to include eggs. Salem is on water warning and instructed Everyone not to drink the water, they are serving and using the contaminated water to create beverages. Our simple Farmhouse breakfasts were beyond bad. Eggs were perfect, hash browns were worse than Denny's and tasted of oil and beef, not to mention they were barely warm, the bacon was tough and tasted like it was cooked a week ago, barely warm, the toast and the English muffin tasted like they came from the day old store, and not warm, and came with a butter substitute spread that was not requested. I have had breakfast / brunch at the Sassy Onion twice in the last two weeks, and the food and service were great both times. Four of us came in an hour before close, and the food, and our Server, Austin, were super. I have eaten here over a dozen times, and never had a bad experience. I am having a tough time understanding the poor reviews. If I were to mention anything, it would be that the portions were overlarge -- and I never complain about large portions! We do not come more often because I hate to wait for a table (on the weekends, the Sassy Onion is always crowded) and because it is often hard to find a convenient parking space on State Street. read more

We had travelled to Salem from Denver to check out some campus details for our new freshman. In speaking with a few students we were told that this was the place for breakfast/brunch so in we went. A very short wait on a Saturday morning, but the place had a fantastic atmosphere and was buzzing with happy conversations and laughter. Then, the food. Just amazing. We were a party of four and ordered four plates. The portion sizes were great after a night out, expertly prepared and served with a small and a pot of coffee. Oh jeez. Upon first look, it seems like their doing great with the plastic between the tables but... the to-go order supplies are right when you walk in. That means if some don't put on their mask till they enter and may have take a breath as they walk in, it's going on the to-go items. After I was sat and ordered, I noticed one of the workers (maroon face mask with two low messy bun pigtails) go over to the side of the counter, pull down her mask, drink something, and adjust her mask back to her mouth, then grab a glass and fill it for a customer. NO HAND WASHING HAPPENED. I then began noticing more staff such as the hosts touching and adjusting their masks then touching other things. The service was good. Our waitress was on top of it. She was super cool. Honesty matters to me, a lot. I got my food and was intrigued with how the whipped cream didn't melt. I asked a fella who looked like the owner or manager of it was real whipped cream or cool whip. He said it definitely was whipped cream. I've worked with whipping cream all my life. The French toast with folded fruit is NOT made with whipped cream. I've provided a photo. Zero melting. I let it sit at home room temp for 6 hours. Still zero melt. It's cool whip. Just be honest. I'm at a complete and utter loss. The food here is so delicious that its non-sensical. That is the largest portion of French toast I have ever seen. Not to mention the fresh berries folded into an enormous amount of super sweet fresh whipped cream. I couldnt even finish it....the cream, that is. But the toast was ethereal. Even if it were a normal size I'd be saying this, and that's what matters. They fry it with a special coating so the crust of the bread is crispy, and carmelized. It is not just sugary, though. Its FLAVORFUL. Oh and this is literally the best bacon I have ever had in my entire life. Anywhere. BEAT BACON. I'd give this place four stars for only serving two pieces with a plate xD but it was just too good. Go to the capital, have some fun at a market, then go here for breakfast. Well I never got to try the food that everyone raves for. I went in with some friends. Everyone was nice enough. We're out of towners, and looked forward to a good place. We ordered and was told by Joe it'd be 15-20. In 15-20 he came outside and told us that he was sorry and there was a mishap and our ticket never made it to the kitchen, so it's be another period of time before we had our food. He was terribly sorry. I wonder how of all the tickets before us and after us made it to the back kitchen? It's interesting that the only difference between my friends and sassy onion's staff and patrons were that we're black. My boyfriend and I decided to check this place out again for brunch. Last time we came here was several years ago... The service was excellent. The decor inside was ok-ok, along with the food. I ordered their Sassy Blintz Stuffed French Toast, it was good but the bacon left a lot to be desired. My boyfriend ordered the Classic Egg Benedict- he said the only redeeming quality was the sourdough english muffin; the eggs weren't poached enough, the egg whites were quite runny.
