This is another great place to have breakfast in Salem, Oregon. It was busy on the Sunday morning. We waited for about 20 to 30 minutes before we got a table. The prices were between $4-16 dollars. Nathan, our server was very helpful in sharing about their breakfast menu. My wife and I split our selections. We had the "The Works" which consisted of several different meats, vegs, and eight eggs. We also had their special....."Peach French Toast." We left the restaurant with our left overs. If you are down in the capital city of Oregon.....stop by this place. read more

Food is ok but honestly overpriced and you have to get here early if you want better service because once it's packed good luck. Only been here three times but I keep trying to give it a chance just to be let down. read more

Love love loved Sassy Onion! I went with a friend for lunch and was really impressed! The food was fabulous and the service was wonderful! Everything was nice and clean and the food was beautiful when it arrived at the table! We ordered a chicken sandwich and a burger and split them so we each try both... they were both really good! I will definitely go here again, in fact, we are already planning another "ladies lunch". The only negative thing I have to say about Sassy Onion is that I wish they were open for dinner too! You can only go for breakfast or lunch... so go early! read more

I drove down to Salem from McMinnville for a doctor's appt and then used Yelp to find a good breakfast place. WOW, DID I SCORE!!! The food was excellent as well as the service (they gave me TWO hot water carafes for my tea). Both breakfast and lunch menus were impressive. You can't go wrong eating here!!! read more

Haven't been here in a while so this was a good opportunity to refresh my perception. I didn't use the bathroom and the country style hash browns were not especially hot. The service was pleasant, engaging, and available! Overall the menu was unique and wonderfully varied. The food was very good but I will address opportunity because this could very well be the best breakfast spot in Salem, but big today. I ordered the promo which comes with a thinly sliced and over cooked prosciutto and mushrooms. Prosciutto has a nice flavor and texture if not turned into fried baloney. I must have misspoken because while I said I really liked the idea of mushrooms the server must have though I said I didn't want them. The potatoes were not over cooked and seasoned just right but not hot. The poached eggs were over cooked and closer to boiled than properly poached. But there is no question that I will come back--hoping that everything will be perfect. This was really a 3.99 star experience and neck and neck with the competition down on 17th. read more

We had travelled to Salem from Denver to check out some campus details for our new freshman. In speaking with a few students we were told that this was the place for breakfast/brunch so in we went. A very short wait on a Saturday morning, but the place had a fantastic atmosphere and was buzzing with happy conversations and laughter. Then, the food. Just amazing. We were a party of four and ordered four plates. The portion sizes were great after a night out, expertly prepared and served with a small and a pot of coffee. If you're around I highly recommend you go. I'll certainly be back. read more

Its the home of the world famous french toast, and I can tell you it deserves the title. Their home made bread with the hot maple syrup is heavenly. We also got the Caprese Bene which was tasty, a couple of egg scrambles that were very well made and a banana and chocolate crepe which was great as well. But the french toast was the star of the show. read more

There was about a twenty minute wait once we got seated we had ordered the hazel nut French toast combo and the avocado bacon eggs Benedict . The wait was worth it the food was delicious and the service was prompt and waitress was pretty attentive . I will definately come back when I am in Salem again . read more

I love how often they have new specials. We had a nice time here and the food was good although we didn't like the banana bread french toast. It was very dry. The omelette was great, I always love their jam and breads, and our flavored lemonades were perfect. Pumpkin pancake was great too I should have just ordered more of those but the banana bread French toast sounded sooo good. read more

Let's start with, don't go here! Go to McDonalds for a better and fresher breakfast Parking, good, name of Resturant awesome, clean and updated, waitress-great, and that where it ends. The owner was yelling into the kitchen that the breakfast burrito was to include eggs. Salem is on water warning and instructed Everyone not to drink the water, they are serving and using the contaminated water to create beverages. Our simple Farmhouse breakfasts were beyond bad. Eggs were perfect, hash browns were worse than Denny's and tasted of oil and beef, not to mention they were barely warm, the bacon was tough and tasted like it was cooked a week ago, barely warm, the toast and the English muffin tasted like they came from the day old store, and not warm, and came with a butter substitute spread that was not requested. Homemade strawberry spread was like water and almost tasteless. And the cost is high, especially near a college. read more

Oh jeez. Upon first look, it seems like their doing great with the plastic between the tables but... the to-go order supplies are right when you walk in. That means if some don't put on their mask till they enter and may have take a breath as they walk in, it's going on the to-go items. After I was sat and ordered, I noticed one of the workers (maroon face mask with two low messy bun pigtails) go over to the side of the counter, pull down her mask, drink something, and adjust her mask back to her mouth, then grab a glass and fill it for a customer. NO HAND WASHING HAPPENED. I then began noticing more staff such as the hosts touching and adjusting their masks then touching other things. The service was good. Our waitress was on top of it. She was super cool. Honesty matters to me, a lot. I got my food and was intrigued with how the whipped cream didn't melt. I asked a fella who looked like the owner or manager of it was real whipped cream or cool whip. He said it definitely was whipped cream. I've worked with whipping cream all my life. The French toast with folded fruit is NOT made with whipped cream. I've provided a photo. Zero melting. I let it sit at home room temp for 6 hours. Still zero melt. It's cool whip. Just be honest. Ps: they have butter so ask for it instead of what their menu says about margarine. read more

Let me just start by saying, I WILL BE BACK.I have never been to a breakfast joint and had such a tough time deciding. Literally everything looked and sounded amazing. I had the corned beef hash which had almost a sweet flavor. My husband had hazelnut french toast. We literally bickered over whose was better. I maintain mine won. Our server was the cutest little thing who offered advice and joked along with us She was very prompt and courteous. Made us feel like her number one priority. So to sum up, with choices like stuffed french toast, cinnamon swirl french toast, Hazelnut, banana nut french toast and so so so much more....how can this be wrong? I'm at a complete and utter loss. The food here is so delicious that its non-sensical. That is the largest portion of French toast I have ever seen. Not to mention the fresh berries folded into an enormous amount of super sweet fresh whipped cream. I couldnt even finish it....the cream, that is. But the toast was ethereal. Even if it were a normal size I'd be saying this, and that's what matters. They fry it with a special coating so the crust of the bread is crispy, and carmelized. It is not just sugary, though. Its FLAVORFUL. Oh and this is literally the best bacon I have ever had in my entire life. Anywhere. BEAT BACON. I'd give this place four stars for only serving two pieces with a plate xD but it was just too good. Go to the capital, have some fun at a market, then go here for breakfast. It was about a 20 minute wait and they will do their best to accommodate you. Go. Go now. read more

Sammy was our server and she took great care of us! Came in for a wonderful breakfast, come early to skip the wait. Food was not that great. My chicken fried steak was very tough and flavorless. Hash browns were cold and looked like they were previously frozen. Sour dough bread did not taste "sour" at all. Disappointed as this was our first visit to the Market Street location. Will stick with Elmers. Elmers never disappoints. read more

I have had breakfast / brunch at the Sassy Onion twice in the last two weeks, and the food and service were great both times. Four of us came in an hour before close, and the food, and our Server, Austin, were super. I have eaten here over a dozen times, and never had a bad experience. I am having a tough time understanding the poor reviews. If I were to mention anything, it would be that the portions were overlarge -- and I never complain about large portions! We do not come more often because I hate to wait for a table (on the weekends, the Sassy Onion is always crowded) and because it is often hard to find a convenient parking space on State Street. read more

Well I never got to try the food that everyone raves for. I went in with some friends. Everyone was nice enough. We're out of towners, and looked forward to a good place. We ordered and was told by Joe it'd be 15-20. In 15-20 he came outside and told us that he was sorry and there was a mishap and our ticket never made it to the kitchen, so it's be another period of time before we had our food. He was terribly sorry. I wonder how of all the tickets before us and after us made it to the back kitchen? It's interesting that the only difference between my friends and sassy onion's staff and patrons were that we're black. I'm not saying the mishap was intentional but it all makes me wonder in a city that is 81% white and 1.5% black. Questionable business practices. read more

I got the 3 pc chicken strips entree and it had a beautiful presentation. The hand breading was crispy with a garlic herb flavor. However one of my chicken strips has a visible short blonde hair despite my boyfriend and I both having long brown hair. I was going to ask for a new chicken strip but not a single server came to check on my table until it was time to the pay bill. On top of that I was eating my fries and found a second hair. Clearly unhygienic practices in the kitchen. Also the stuffed French toast had really stale crust. :/// read more

Food was good, however when I wanted to get back on track (I do very low carb) it was a complete mystery to the server how to substitute anything for the Toast and Potatoes. The result was a really skimpy $11.50 breakfast. Nice place, clean and comfy. I will be back for Breakfast! read more

The wait wasn't long, but it was a good location for a quick jaunt to check out the State Capitol buildings. The breakfast burritos were awesome and the French toast was addictive. A trip to town for medical visit and due to holiday, traffic light. Office just a few blocks away so thought would give it a try. 11:00 am breakfast over, but due to holiday serving all day Had buttermilk pancake with egg, tomato and spinach side. Extremely well done pancake yummy. Homemade strawberry jam to top it off. Service, fast friendly and stopped by to check up on us. This place is a real treat and a definite keeper. read more

My boyfriend and I decided to check this place out again for brunch. Last time we came here was several years ago... The service was excellent. The decor inside was ok-ok, along with the food. I ordered their Sassy Blintz Stuffed French Toast, it was good but the bacon left a lot to be desired. My boyfriend ordered the Classic Egg Benedict- he said the only redeeming quality was the sourdough english muffin; the eggs weren't poached enough, the egg whites were quite runny. I am surprised with the amount of people lining up for this restaurant. The servers here are definitely friendly but that's not going to get us to come back unfortunately. read more

Food was only meh. I ordered the French toast combo which it is known for and it seemed dry and a bit stale. The crunchies on it were delicious. The eggs seemed soggy with the butter/fat used to cook them. The hashbrowns were flavored differently and I could not tell the herb being used (or if it happened to find it's way into my serving). Not my favorite. Service was also meh, as the waitstaff seemed a bit disorganized or distracted. read more

Food was cold, when asked to have it replaced with hot food, the replacement was cold as well. Cold sausage is not good. Also charged extra for a small amount of ranch dressing for the fries without letting us know it would cost extra. The food was not very good, not good service. read more

We sat at the bar so y'all should try their drinks because they looked so good and the bartenders looked like they were having fun making them. The restaurant is a literal house and while charming it is small and packed inside and the parking lot is also really small so you may need to get there early or expect to park somewhere else in the streets. They were what you expect: crunchy French toast bites. Our server never returned after dropping off the food, only at the end to clear plates and give the check. It was a disappointing experience and even more disappointing that we had to tip on that kind of service because we're those kind of people. Clearly he didn't deserve it. The encounter legitimately set a really grim tone for the rest of the day.
