I got the 3 pc chicken strips entree and it had a beautiful presentation. The hand breading was crispy with a garlic herb flavor. However one of my chicken strips has a visible short blonde hair despite my boyfriend and I both having long brown hair. I was going to ask for a new chicken strip but not a single server came to check on my table until it was time to the pay bill. On top of that I was eating my fries and found a second hair. We were in Salem for a couple days visiting Willamette University Bearcat Days and decided to find a spot for breakfast in town. I found the Sassy Onion on Yelp and it looked good, so we tried it out. I'm so glad we did! The service was great and the food was delicious. Had a few hours before an appointment so my husband and I stopped in. The place is cute and decorated nicely. I had the San Diego skillet and it was dank. My husband said his breakfast tacos sucked. He ended up giving them to the homeless guy out front. We each had only 1 cup of coffee and were charged $6 for the whole pot which was left on our table but I'm a one and done kinda coffee drinker. This is a good size restaurant and has some excellent breakfast items. My friend needs gluten free food- I learned first hand that this gluten intolerance is real by the after effects. She ordered a gluten free banana bread and hash brown plate- didn't look spectacular and she didn't rave about it. Her husband had egg dishes both times. They looked really good, he liked them, but no raves. The first time we went, I wasn't hungry and just had coffee. Ick. Weak. Not sure what's going on with the coffee in Salem, but it's not good. The second time we went I ordered the world famous French toast- primarily because if you're claiming it's famous, then I have to try it; and I needed to see how it compared to word of mouth. It didn't come close to the party in my mouth of WOM. This toast was visually odd: around 6" in diameter and around 1 1/2 inches thick- I'm guessing plain bread that somehow was formed into this big slice. I didn't get a good taste of egg, but that could be because it was coated in what looked and tasted like crushed sugar Frosted Flakes. Food was only meh. I ordered the French toast combo which it is known for and it seemed dry and a bit stale. The crunchies on it were delicious. The eggs seemed soggy with the butter/fat used to cook them. The hashbrowns were flavored differently and I could not tell the herb being used (or if it happened to find it's way into my serving). The location and environment are great. Service was courteous and fast. The food, however, left a bit to be desired. Hash browns were cold as was the toast. The omelette was like warm as if it had been sitting a while. My friends food just looked tired; English muffins overcooked big at least the eggs were cooked right. We went for lunch. The service was very good. My friend ordered a wrap and I got a sandwich. The fries were good. I took half of my sandwich home. My friend wasn't too pleased with her wrap. Delicious food!!! I love their breakfast burritos and their Sassy Blintz. My boyfriend also enjoyed their chicken fried steak which he likes to try in every town he visits! Only reason for 4 stars is I've had multiple times now where I've asked for additional stuff in to-go orders (with an additional charge) and when I open it up at home they've forgotten the add on. I've learned my lesson and will check the box before I leave but I would prefer to no have to open up my burrito to make sure they got all the ingredients especially when they're charging more for the add-on. I've only experienced this with to go orders, everything in person has been lovely and I always take people here when they come visit me while I'm at school. read more

The location itself is unassuming, in the middle of a strip mall off a main street with plenty of parking, but the food is great. My husband and I got in right away during a peak weekend time, were seated at a small booth, and service was generally fast. Love that they give you your own coffee carafe at the table (no waiting for caffeine). I had the veggie hash, and it was more than filling, though relatively greasy. The whole wheat bread was delicious - I don't usually end up eating the bread that comes on the side, but this tasted homemade and was soft with just the right amount of toastiness. My husband ordered a veggie hash and one piece of French toast "on the side", and the French toast was almost comical when it arrived - one piece of French toast is an intimidating portion here. The bread is super thick, toppings are plentiful, and it looks like a sugar party on a plate, but the bread was much softer than it appeared and it wasn't at all heavy. French toast is not usually my thing, but I tried a couple of bites and it was tasty (though ridiculously sweet). What if I had gone to that "other college" in Oregon? What if I had left my family to keep pursuing my gymnastics career? What if I had told my wonderful bf to pound sand as I had wanted to shortly after we met? I hate what ifs. In a college town (Willamette University is less than a block away), as well as the State Capitol of Oregon, I'd expect to find some really good, inexpensive places to eat, what with all the starving students and government workers and all. One of our nieces is a freshman at WU and while visiting, she said she'd been wanting to try the Sassy Onion, so off we went for lunch. Upon entering, the bakery display case is the first thing you see: homemade breads, pastries, cinnamon rolls, and other goodies. We were greeted immediately and only had to wait a couple minutes for a table. The front diningroom was packed with a various assortment of students, athletes, and faculty. The back diningroom was opened up and we were seated away from the crowds, which was nice because we had some catching up to do. Our waitress was busy but friendly and brought our drinks and took our orders quickly. My niece had the famous Belgian waffle with bananas, pecans, and whipped cream that was basically bigger than her head; she is a very small young woman but managed to pack it all away in record time ( I was so proud of her!). I had the BLTA (bacon, lettuce, tomato & avocado sandwich) that came with fries that I actually ate. Husband had a Thai cashew bento bowl that he absolutely loved! Fresh-brewed iced tea and great coffee too. Top notch sandwiches, wraps, burgers, salads, soups, and baked goodies. Breakfast is a specialty with omelets, french toast, pancakes, skillet dishes, and even burritos in a shabby chic but academic atmosphere. They also do catering. Been coming to this place very occasionally for years, ever since my sis moved to Salem. They've always done an amazing job at cranking out huge volumes of delicious food in a very friendly setting. I'll keep coming back here for however long they (and my sis) are in Salem. It's a little mid-century business district that's never been knocked down. You still get that angle-in parking and businesses right up against each other, like 50s main street usa. The dining room here has awesome high ceilings, probably seats about 50 at a time. There's a line on the weekends til 1 or 2 for breakfast. The front of house staff is young, looks like lots of college kids, even in summer. They're motivated and right on top of everything. The menu here is extensive, with lots of participation from the starch group. French toast, pancakes, and so on--big specialties of theirs. I've always opted for eggs and they've always delivered the goods. They bring you a carafe of water, and are happy to leave a carafe of coffee on the table. You can tell they get super busy, huh? They're right around the corner from the capitol and they seem to draw from every demographic in Salem, with multi-generational families and packs of kids and everything in between crowding the tables. They could have been a little quicker to take our order this last time we were in, but we caught them at the end of rush when things were dying down and people were finally getting breaks, I think. The prices here are incredibly reasonable, and the kitchen has some ambition, with nice recipes using interesting ingredients in some dishes. They also deliver generous servings of old favorites.
