I purchased my fiancé's ring in Pienza, Tuscany in secret after she tried it on and said she loved it. It's an antique: 110-120 years old, Italian red gold, miners' diamonds. When she'd tried it on in the store, it was a perfect fit. Several months later when I proposed, the ring was literally 2.5 sizes too big (she'd clearly had inflammation from the travel, heat, etc. when she tried it on). We also noticed one of the diamonds was ever so slightly loose. We were told by some that it was impossible to size down. I was extremely worried about american jewelers damaging or ruining the ring. The antique gold, the placement of the diamonds, everything was too complicated. Thank goodness we got the recommendation to go to Sausalito jewelers. Their in house jeweler, Paulo, is Italian and holds master jeweler certification from Florence. He did an absolutely perfect restoration. He brought it down over 2 sizes, he gave it a gentle polish, and he was able to adjust the loose ring. He did this work without in any way changing or distorting the original look or shape of the ring. I cannot tell you how happy we are with it. Also, huge shout out to Sam and Aida who work there, did the consultation with us, and who are always willing to give our pup, Pax, a treat. I have had nothing short of an amazing experience working with Sam and Jess at Sausalito Jewelers. I designed my engagement ring and wedding band as well as purchased my fiancé's wedding band through them and I'm so happy I did. They have a super customizable process and work with you to create exactly what you're looking for. I selected a three stone setting on display and they were able to tweak the design to have a lower profile, small side stones with pear shaped diamonds, rose gold instead of the white gold on display, and they were happy to set my own diamond in as the center stone. I also love their color of rose gold - not too pink/brassy. Before the final ring was created, I had several opportunities to view the 3D printed mold of my ring and make adjustments beforehand. And I can't forget about Paulo - who is the one behind the scenes masterfully creating the beautiful jewelry- God bless that man who resized my ring twice to get it to a size 3.25. My fiancé and I recently got engaged and I was referred to Sam by my sister-in-law. She had her engagement ring, and several other special pieces, re-designed/produced by Sausalito Jewelers years ago and I trusted her recommendation. She forewarned me that the process could be long and frustrating at times, but that it would be worth it in the end. Looking back now (3 months later), nothing anyone could have said would have prepared my fiancé and I for the disappointing experience we had with Sam. We thought it was slightly odd that there was no jewelry in the store when we arrived for our initial consultation, but we attributed it to COVID strangeness and low inventory/supply. When I handed over my treasured diamonds in exchange for what was to be a 'unique and special design', it was because I trusted him. When Sam talked at length about all of the expensive equipment he uses to create unique ring designs, but then failed to make a simple sketch for us after 2 1/2 months, we thought it was strange, but given that we were trying to customize a ring leveraging existing stones, I trusted him. When Sam ghosted me for weeks and failed to produce a CAD design as promised, I knew something was wrong. He claimed everything "was out of his control". Ultimately, we made the decision to give up on Sam and all of his unfulfilled promises.
