After seeing a positive post on a neighborhood site, I decided to try Ross Goldsmith out. What a positive experience - in the quality of their work and the price. I took my diamond and Ceylon sapphire tennis bracelet to Ross Goldsmith today because a link broke. I met Stephan Gunning who is an award-winning Master Goldsmith - something I learned as we were talking. I appreciated his knowledge, his easy and friendly personality, and that he was not trying to gouge me on the price. Even better, he had just finished another project, had some time, and he was able to fix the link in about 30 minutes! He asked if I had some time and he could fix it right then. He needed about 30 minutes or so, so I walked over to the Mexican Restaurant two doors down, enjoyed a couple of shrimp tacos and a margarita, and returned about 30 minutes later as he was wrapping up my job. I also asked him to inspect the bracelet to let me know if any of the other links were failing. He pointed out at least 4 (the bracelet is over 30 years old) fragile links, and we agreed that if and as they fail, I could bring it back. Fortunately, there is not a risk of losing the bracelet if another link fails. The job cost only cost $50 - reasonable and fair for what needed to be done. I was given an estimate of $150 from a jewelry repair in Mill Valley, which I knew was ridiculous for what needed to be done - and I am not even a jeweler. I would not have gotten one link fixed for that price, so I am relieved Stephan was there to save the day! I appreciated Stephan's honesty and workmanship. He told me that he and his wife bought it from the previous owner who was retiring (he had already worked there for seven years prior) and she was as delightful as Stephan. My fiance and I received two family rings when we got engaged this past year and decided that we wanted to create a special ring that incorporated them both with an updated style that matched my aesthetic. My mom was the one that recommended The Ross Goldsmith since a friend of her's had re-designed her ring and thought I might like his work. Upon entering his shop for the first time, I was blown away. Everything on display was unique, artistic and well made. William was friendly, not pushy at all and allowed me to try on styles right then and there to see if anything caught my eye. I let him know I was interested in doing a full custom ring so we scheduled some time for me to come in and design. I brought my sister in with me and we again tried on styles, he walked me through all the different pros and cons of different styles, geometric, square verse a round base, height, etc. etc. Again, William was so accommodating and made the process so easy. Once I decided on a base style, we sat down and he sketched what we talked about, making tweaks, to height, thickness, tapered verse not, chose the metal and then we worked out a price. He was very straight forward :) William turned around a wax casting in 2 weeks, over the Christmas holiday! I was able to then come in, with my mom this time, try everything on and make final adjustments before we made the final. Words cannot express how excited I was when I saw the final ring. It's so absolutely perfect, feels like me and displays the family diamonds beautifully. William was such a pleasure to work with through the entire process and I so appreciated how much he communicated with me throughout and made me feel comfortable since it had really been my first time around fine jewelry. A wonderful experience and result to report. It may seem odd at age 82, and 62 years of marriage to get a new wedding ring. With my wedding band in three pieces we decided to go to a jeweler that would design a wedding band for a "hard wearing tom boy".
