I've been a huge fan of this is store for years. Needless to say this review is long overdue. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable (in particular Avery & Taylor). The offerings are fresh and often local as well (honey, hot sauces, and crackers to name a few). They have nice rewards (in particular the birthday month reward), as well as offer discounts to folks that work in downtown Boulder. Some of my fave products purchased at this location are Brooklyn Everything Bagel Blend, their Seed Ranch Umami Reserve hot sauce, and Old Mill Pizza Sprinkle. Getting there is quite easy as well as they are just a couple blocks from the bus station and located directly next to a parking garage (free parking Sat & Sun). If visiting isn't on your agenda no worries, you can order your faves directly on their website. It's a great idea to drop in anytime you are downtown. You never know what they'll be demoing or when they will offer their next in person cooking class. Definitely check them out! read more

Covid Crisis update: I occasionally shop here for gifts, for a few specialties like their candied ginger cubes and for some special spices for some holiday recipes they served and shared at a Yelp event last year. I have been back a few times but at this point in my life I had been eating in restaurants a great deal of the time.Though at one time I was a reasonably decent cook. Comes now the stay at home order and I personally need to really isolate, so back to cooking and I don't have supplies enough for what I want. I decided that I am doing quality spices now all the way. Plus online ordering was hard to predict availability and quality at the grocery store and I have LOTS of faith in Savory Spice. I could not go out to even pick up an order and decided they could just ship, not a big expense. And as it turned out they were shipping online from Littleton is seems, not the Boulder Store. It took a few days longer than I thought it would but I wasn't going anywhere and I splurged on my favorite candied ginger which I did not get around to making anything with, I just ate it all up sinfully, savoring every piece over a week or so. This little shop is easily accessible at its location just off of the Pearl Street Mall on Broadway. It's not a big place, but it contains a wide selection of spices, including some that can be difficult to find. Additionally, they sell quite a variety of their own spice blends and some accessories. It's a useful place for any home chef who likes to experiment and either needs unique spices or wants to try out the blends. The staff is friendly and helpful. If you drive, parking can be a pain. However, if you bus, walk, or bike, it's pretty easy to get to, especially if you spend time around the mall. Downtown Boulder parking is not horrid relative to Denver, so it's not a huge deal, either way. If you sign up for their mailing list, you can choose a free packet of spice blend on your birthday (available choices vary), which is a fun perk. Getting Spicy The Savory Spice Shop is a great place to find new and exciting flavors to add to your kitchen. They have all kinds of blends and spices native to various regions around the world. I'm sure they tapped into some quality selections that truly makes this a go-to spot for some unique foodie potions. The service was great considering we were directly chatting with the owner, Dan. He was awesome. Dan greeted us and showed us around a bit. He was even kind enough to share his knowledge on a few ingredients we had questions about. I can't speak for the rest of the staff but we loved the service we received this particular visit. I really wanted to see what this place was all about even though we had out kiddies with us. Knowing they'll be a handful we quickly tried to find a few things we can use for dinner. The verdict? 1oz of Ghost Pepper Salt, 1oz Herbs in Duxelles Seasoning, & 2oz Onyx Cocoa Powder. Just enough to give each a try and last for a good amount of recipes. The Ghost Pepper Salt is spicy with a pleasant chocolate note that highlights the heat. The salt works well. The Herbs in Duxelles Seasoning is simply rich with excellent mushroom flavors. The blend of seasonings and 3 types of mushrooms made this one a winner in my book. I love chocolate and when I saw the cocoas- I was convinced that I'd be walking out with something to bake with. I tried the 5 they had on display and the sweet, potent flavor and aroma of the Black Onyx Cocoa Powder was hard to pass up. I'll have to use it to really tell you folks what I really think. I was sad because I wasn't able to fully experience this shop since our kids were tired and wanted to go home from a long day spent downtown. This place smells AMAZING!!!! They have so many spices, herbs and kits it's mind boggling. Now I've only ever been to one other spice shop so I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure if you need something; they have it. The owners are very nice and very helpful. They know their stuff. This local business imports , grinds and hand bottles a plethora of piquant spices from all over the world. You can sample them all on spot and while a tongue barbed with cloves is a challenge, the various types of cocoa in a bottle is a treat. They also have great mixes for bar-be-ques, steaks, hamburgers, etc. Another curious delight was "lavender sugar" and various types of sea salt which in addition to being tasty, can be a colorful decorator item. I am addicted to the Savory Spice Shop. They offer quality spices that can transform average meals into gourmet meals. My family has loved the transformation in my cooking. I frequently stop in to see what's new. They have fun recipes on hand for some of their spices which I love. This allows me to make extraordinary new meals. This location does not have some of my favorites that I used to get in Oklahoma, so that makes me a little sad. But overall they keep a great variety of spices on hand. We have been coming to this Savory Spice for a long time and appreciate the company's attention to flavors. At this point all of our spices have come from this store. We also historically appreciated the customer service and attention to each customer given by staff. Historically this place was great for learning about flavors and expanding one's pallet. Sadly this seems to not be the case any longer. First the store launched a new pricing system which has been confusing to understand and poorly communicated by staff. We have been told a refill bag is not longer available one visit, then told the refill bags are available but the same price as a full glass jar. Second and most importantly, the customer service has taken a nose dive. We have felt in the way, and inconveniencing the staff while asking questions the last three visits. We try to give places the benefit of the doubt with transitions - this store seems to be going through a lot - so will return but are cautious. read more

Mesquite Coffee Bean rub is my absolute favorite spice I my kitchen. Ever since I made the switch over and stocked my kitchen with the savory spice shops spices my cooking has gotten better. I absolutely love their selection of unsalted spices and feel like they are right in line with other spices at the grocery store pricewise. There's such a large selection that it can be overwhelming but the staff couldn't be more helpful. They are passionate about what they are selling and everyone who works there has great recommendations. I have never left disappointed. read more

My one-time visit to Savory Spice shop may have just convinced me to start cooking again! When I mentioned that I had pretty much retired from cooking, co-owner Dan suggested that I could probably find some spices to throw on my cheerios in the morning. I'm guessing he probably hears that excuse a lot. ;) All the spices are ground on site in small batches and they give you $1 off on refills if you bring in the original bottle. I really like the big chalkboard behind the counter which lists all the restaurants in town that feature their spices - what a great shout out for your fellow neighborhood businesses. At the Unseen Bean across the street, they even featured some sweet sampling spices from the shop that you could add into coffees and teas. I stocked up on some ground coriander, the main ingredient in my dry rub recipe for steaks....yeah, I can make a pretty mean steak when properly motivated. In need of a belated birthday gift for a family member, I spent some time perusing the spice sets, which are cleverly packaged in mountain-esque shaped cardboard boxes. You can choose from a premade set (salts, curries, bloody mary spices, great add-ins for popcorn, baking sets...pretty much anything you can think of) or you can create your own. I settled on a sugar set because...well, who doesn't like sugar? There are also shops in Denver, Littleton and the Springs, and they are franchising. I used to go to Penzey's but found that Savory had a greater variety and more sophisticated blends. I will have to say that I'm jealous. Visiting from CA, I haven't found one of these shops since I was in Seattle so I was super excited to walk into this one. Thus, I'm comparing it to the one in Seattle. Awesome staff, great layout, lots of space and air to breathe and clear my nose before I move on to the next tester. The labels on these jars are great because it gives you info on what to use the spice with which I love. You can buy as little as 1/2 an ounce to as much as a jar +. This is great for someone like me who likes to try it out and if I like it I can order it online. I bought 1/2 ounce portions for myself which included the same label of information and then jars for my friends for Christmas gifts. Excellent variety ranging from BBQ, Asian, Indian, Mexican to cocoa. I've already tried 4 of the spices and miss the store already. read more

I went in here for the first time to buy a bunch of ayurvedic spices and when I walked in the the two women who worked there were engaged in conversation. I walked around and found some of what I was looking for. The woman behind the counter was polite, but it was clear I was intruding on her day. She was helpful in an obligatory way -- I don't know how else to describe it. It was like when someone is bothered, but can't show it. They have a ton of spices and I was a bit overwhelmed/confused. They didn't carry one of the spices I was looking for so the woman behind the counter suggested I go to Rebecca's (which I did -- the staff there is great!) So I'm not impressed with Savory. This is one review where I need at least 10 stars to even come close to portraying how awesome Savory Spice Shop is! I'll also state for the record, I'm not an affiliate or connected in any other way than just being a happy, happy customer - though I'm certainly open to that thought because I love them so much! We all know that happy, happy customers sing praises like birds which is precisely why all businesses should strive to be as good as the folks at this establishment. Their spices are top notch and oh so much better than grocery store offerings - once you try them you'll never be satisfied to settle for old, stale stuff again, although I realize that if you haven't been to Savory Spice Shop yet then you don't even realize the other stuff is just junk. (I mean, who knew paprika was really supposed to have flavor - and good flavor at that?) I highly recommend that you pay them a visit, pick up something that suits your fancy and just try it (you can taste test nearly everything they offer). I chanced upon visiting this store in late Aug because of a curry cooking adventure with Camp Culinary. There were all kinds of curries being made and taught on that day and the spices and spice blends were supplied by the Savory Spice shop. I was doing a demo on making an Indian curry and had brought my own spices and spice blends with me, thinking that I was so not going to use ready made blends labeled as "curry powder". ( Snobbish! I KNOW! ) BUT! Am I glad that I was proven wrong. Savory Spice Shop has very good quality spices from all over the world including India. Not only do they have some custom blends that are simply amazing ( you can smell the aroma of each and every spice in the blends) they also have whole spices, ground spices, salts and sugar and a plethora of chili peppers! Chancing upon this store has been one of the best spicy things to happen to me. I really look forward to going back to the store and buy some of my spices. I usually have to beg ( seriously beg) my sister or friends in India to go shop for spices and ship them to me. NO more!! I will finally be able to shop for my spices right here in Boulder. Went in on Saturday after hitting the farmer's market to grab some spices for our Sunday feast. The lady who helped me was extremely friendly and clearly knew her spices. I appreciated the help in selecting the right cinnamon for my recipe and my friend got some delicious lemongrass curry. I wish they had a few more choices to try of some spices, like the ginger, but what they do carry is very high quality and made some awesome gingerbread! I paid about $15 for 0.25 ounces of ginger, cinnamon, and allspice, 1 ounce cocoa, and a small thing of vanilla extract (Madagascar, which I find more versatile than the more expensive Tahitian). Not bad at all, and just enough to last me about 6 months (most spices fade after about a year, so I like being able to buy just what I will actually use). Try the flavored sugars, they're quite tasty (although I think I'll stick to making my own for now). I guess that's my only complaint about price, that some complicated ingredients like preserved lemons or flavored sugars are expensive compared to making my own, but I understand that many people aren't so inclined and thus appreciate the availability. read more

As an avid home cook and baker, I feel extraordinarily guilty for not having been here sooner. My mom and I finally visited the shop after promising ourselves we would go when she was in town. The first thing that hits you when you enter is the incredibly delicious aroma. The moment you step in, you know you're in a special place. It really was an experience to smell each individual spice and it was so hard to pick favorites. In addition to their 'plain' (not-mixed) things, they also had tons of unique blends for all types of food. It is especially fantastic that you have options for buying the spices whether you need a little or a lot. The employees were very knowledgeable. The guy that helped us was extremely friendly and patient while we tried to decide on certain items (namely vanilla beans and cinnamon). After having been to Savory, I will probably not buy spices at the grocery store again. Knowing that there are outstanding ingredients available at reasonable prices just around the corner is a very comforting thought. From my first purchased spice which was Mt. Elbert (all purpose, I was playing it safe), I vowed to never buy another spice anywhere else. The mixes are so creative, I make up dishes just to use some of them. I buy everything from salt to cocoa powder at Savory Spice Shop. I have not bought anything spice or flavor related anywhere else in over a year (since my last visit). All house warming gifts for friends are now spice mixes! And they love them! Savory Spice Shop is fantastic. It's cute, well stocked, and the staff is top-notch. We originally visited the Denver location and were immediately hooked. There are tons of interesting spice combinations you would be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. We have never made a trip to Savory Spice Shop and left empty-handed or disappointed. The Boulder location is a little smaller, but everything is still organized and presented well. Spices are sectioned so you can quickly find what you need. Staff can also prepare a bottle/bag for you if the size you require is not available in the spice you want. Staff is always around and available to answer your questions. They are truly spice connoisseurs and provide excellent recommendations! Although the spices are on the pricier side, they are high quality. I would much rather support a local business than buy generic spices from a huge corporation. If you love to cook and find yourself using lots of spices, this is the place for you. read more

This is a truly incredible store and I think what makes it particularly special is the amazing owner, Dan, who is here almost all the time. I feel like he might know almost everything about spices and food in general. I always ask his advice on just about everything food-related and he has never failed me. Basically you can find pretty much any spice here that you could think of, and many more that you have probably never heard of in your whole life. They will be fresh and less expensive than you would find elsewhere. This is a great place to take visitors to Boulder - truly memorable. They put it together will all of the trimmings in a nice cardboard box complete with label.
