Fried Green Tomatoes
Rob C.

There are two kinds of restaurant experiences: the ones where the food saves the service, and the ones where the server is out there fighting for their life while the kitchen is playing dodgeball with expectations. Saw's BBQ in Hoover landed squarely in category two. Chaz was fantastic from the jump. Attentive without hovering, knew the menu cold, steered us in the right direction, and honestly should probably be given partial ownership based on effort alone. Every recommendation he made ended up being the best thing we ate. We started with the fried green tomatoes, and buddy... the breading fled that tomato like the crew abandoning the Titanic. One bite and the whole crispy shell just slid off like it had somewhere else to be. Underneath was a tomato wondering how things got this bad. Not a strong start. The pulled chicken showed up next and somehow managed to achieve the culinary equivalent of elevator music. It wasn't bad. It also wasn't anything. Just sitting there existing on the plate with absolutely zero personality. If beige were a flavor, this would be its flagship product. Then Chaz's recommendations started rolling in and suddenly the kitchen remembered they could cook. The fried pickles were outstanding. Crisp, golden, crunchy, salty in all the right ways. Exactly what you want fried pickles to be. The fried okra though? That was the star of the night. Whole okra pods instead of those sad little slime coins you usually get. Crispy, seasoned well, breading actually staying attached like it understood the assignment. I could've eaten a bucket of those and started negotiating take-home rights. The okra saved the evening. Finished with the banana pudding, which was light and airy and a nice way to wrap things up. I wanted a little more banana flavor punching through, but it still worked as dessert after the rollercoaster happening before it. So here's the deal: Chaz earned every dollar of that tip. Some of the sides absolutely delivered. Some of the main attractions felt like they were clocking in emotionally from home. Would I come back? Yeah, probably. But next time I'm skipping the identity crisis chicken and just ordering every fried thing Chaz points at like he's conducting a very delicious orchestra. An average experience overall.

Adult Chicken Finger Plate

I know this is a BBQ joint but I adore their fried chicken!! This is my favorite chicken tender/ chicken sandwich spot EVER. It has amazing flavor, comes out super hot and juicy and perfectly crispy. It comes with 2 sides - and they're all so delicious. This time I got the Mac and cheese and baked beans. No complaints at all. The service is great and pretty quick despite how busy/popular they are. The decorations inside are cool and give Alabama vibes. A must if you're visiting from out of state!

Brisket BBQ Fries

I have yet to actually eat inside of this restaurant, but I have ordered delivery from this restaurant on several occasions. I love their brisket topped barbecue fries. The other barbecue is good as well. Their desserts are not my favorite. I got peach cobbler one day and it was pretty bland. The banana pudding was also not great. I will stick with their meal options and skip dessert.

Cheese Gritz and Brisket Grilled Cheese with Pepper Jelly & bacon

The Brisket and Grilled Cheese is too die for. Brisket was super tender, bacon cooked perfectly, cheese was melted and jelly was scrumptious. Melts in your mouth. Cheese grits was good and perfect texture. My server wasn't the best, but the others their made up for it.

Pulled pork, Chicken, Brisket

We had a baby shower for 45 people and ordered Saws delivery. The food and service was OUTSTANDING!! They go above and beyond for you!! The food OMG, I mean EVERYONE continues to rave about the food still. My husband is a huge BBQ person and he said that was the BEST brisket he has ever had!! And he eats a lot of BBQ. If you are on the fence of ordering, don't be. You will NOT be disappointed at all. Everything was exceptional!! Our Menu - Brisket, Chicken, Pork, Mac&Cheese, Baked Beans, Bums, and Banana pudding! ALL AMAZING!!! Thank you Jimmy for putting the party over the top!!

Brisket sandwich

The Brunswick stew was good. The brisket sandwich was too much with bread, bacon and jam. The brisket is better on its own, I would not recommend the brisket grilled cheese sandwich.

Brisket bbq fries

For the brisket bbq fries . They were amazing . The bama white is some of the best I've had . Also tried the sausage and it was very good . Our server was very polite and quick , we never went without drinks . The restaurant is clean and very plenty of seating . Would definitely go back again!

She did a really nice job of making sure we had drink refills, sauces, extra napkins, etc. She provided us with great service throughout our visit I was blown away by how swiftly our meals came out! I typically do not default to ordering chicken tenders but I love theirs at JNN! So crispy on the outside and tender. I also had collard greens as my side; they were seasoned and well prepared. I added a little pepper sauce ( I'm southern). Oh and I can't forget about those warm , beautiful cheddar muffins - Whew! My guest had a pork plate with fries and onion rings. They enjoyed their meal as well. JNN is definitely a good go to family friendly restaurant that offers nice food options. The inside was clean but the floor was a little slippery. They also have a nice sized patio with TVs. This was my first time here at this location and the experience exceeded my expectations!

Of course, the meal kicked off with their famous cheese biscuits--warm, cheesy, and impossible to stop eating. I went with the barbecue chicken as my entrée, and it hit the mark--smoky, tender, and paired perfectly with the sauces on the table. My colleague ordered the chicken barbecue salad, which came out fresh, generous in portion, and topped with a good amount of pulled chicken. Both plates left us satisfied without being overdone. The sides were on point too--the baked beans had that deep, slow-cooked flavor, and the cole slaw added a crisp, refreshing crunch to balance the meal. And our server, Paige, was friendly, helpful and made the experience complete. Jim 'N Nick's is consistently solid and remains one of the more dependable barbecue spots in Birmingham.

Smoked 1/4 Chicken with slaw and Hoe cake. We should have both skipped the slaw, waterly thin & sweet. Fried Hoecake ok. Tater salad good as was the brisket and chicken. Service was spotty. The noise was over the top, music too loud for any conversation, inside was worse with a room full of people. All the glass makes the acoustics hard for hearing anything but noise and not so good music. Good BBQ, the Atmosphere good be much better.

Had lunch today at Martin's BBQ Joint located at 3029 Pump House Road in Vestavia Hills, Alabama…read more It's actually in the Cahaba Heights area off of Highway 280. You order at the counter, which can be a little hectic for a first-timer. Luckily for me, I knew what I wanted and quickly found it on the big menu on the wall beside me. I later noticed that people were looking at handheld menus as you entered the restaurant. There was no one in front of me when I entered, so I didn't see those. The lady at the counter was very friendly and helpful in answering my questions. I ordered the pulled pork shoulder tray with two sides. If you have read my reviews, you know I only eat fries, so I doubled up the fries. You are given a number and can sit anywhere in their very big (for a BBQ joint) indoor dining area, or you can sit on a patio or outside. The walls are COVERED with pictures of old movie posters, country music stars, album covers, car tags, signs, and even a picture of the NWO (IYKYK). I didn't see the required Alabama BBQ joint picture of The Bear, Alabama football coach Paul Bryant, but with so many things on the wall, I'm sure it has to be there somewhere. There is a separate 'To-Go' spot for placing orders on the run. This also looked like a bar area as I saw advertising for alcohol. They also offer T-shirts and hats for sale if that is your thing. The menu consists of burgers, tacos, brisket, chicken, catfish, smoked chicken wings, BBQ nachos with just about any kind of side you can ask for, and pie for dessert. My order was brought to me in a timely manner. The BBQ is West Tennessee-style whole hog that Martin's cooks low and slow over hickory wood for up to 24 hours. The pulled pork is melt-in-your-mouth delicious, topped off with their special Jack's Creek BBQ sauce, on the table, which is a sweet vinegar and pepper-based sauce. I did see other sauces behind the counter, so I'm sure you just have to ask. The portions were just right for me. The fries are real cut potatoes that have been peeled. I doubled up, and that was enough to feed a family of four. Next time I will just ask for one side so as not to waste fries. The Jack's Creek sauce was great poured over my fries; it is water-based and not thick, and that is how I like my sauce. The sweet tea wasn't as sweet as some places, but I'm not complaining; it was good, and the day was hot. There seemed to be a lot of staff working. I guess it can be busy on Saturdays for lunch. I visited around 2:30 pm, and it was not crowded when I arrived but picked up as my time went on. The staff didn't have anything to say as several walked past me while doing random things. Not that it's a bad thing; I just always acknowledged customers with a "how ya doing?"--little things. The music was a mix of classic rock, soft 70s to hair metal, set at a decent volume. I don't mind being able to hear the radio, but maw maw and paw paw may complain that it was too loud. The parking lot may fill up with a big dinner crowd as there is a business next door that shares the parking lot. There is handicap parking available. Overall, Martin's offered a cool atmosphere for BBQ and a relaxing meal. They offer live music some nights (check their website), and it seems to be a great place for socializing in a casual setting. 5/5 -Kevin
