First the food: The food here is amazing. I ordered the Chicken Massamun Curry (3 chili spice level) and it knocked my socks off. The spice was just right. Hot enough to remind me what I was eating but not so spicy that I could only taste the spice. A coworker ordered Chicken Pad Thai and I was a bit jealous. It looked and smelled delicious as well. I have read a lot of the slightly negative reviews about Sawatdee and I scratch my head. I wonder what these people were expecting. This restaurant isn't your run of the mill food and people shouldn't expect food like the big chains push out. Next, the service: The staff is friendly, courteous and helpful. What they aren't is fast and this is the reason I am not giving Sawatdee 5 stars. When my coworkers and I arrived for lunch, we were the only table in the restaurant and our lunch still took an hour and twenty minutes. Within that hour and twenty minutes, a few more people arrived but not in great enough numbers to overload the restaurant staff. I would say they need to focus a but more on quick, attentive service in addition to being friendly, courteous and helpful., especially during lunch. Most people do not have the luxury of unlimited time for lunch during the week. Overall: When you smile and are instantly gratified when you take a bite, you know you have found food worthy of the price. I've made this place a regular on my rotation and I have never been disappointed! The food (especially the apps) is great and the service has always been top notch. My entire family is vegetarian and they have SOOOO many great options for us. The pallet in my family varies widely and they are able to make things as weak or as spicey as you would like. The up-and-down spice levels of this place are comparable to the moods of Amy Winehouse. Honestly, I really wanted to give this place five stars. I'm in love with a memory I have of Sawatdee downtown, a Thai restaurant that once swept me off my feet and made me drunk with love over cashew chicken, coconut milk soup, and a few other dishes. But it's just not the same anymore. I always choose medium for spice level, but this last time medium was apparently all jacked up on steroids -- my soup was so full of pepper flakes it burned the edges of my mouth. Sawatdee was good. We got take out, so I didn't experience some of the bad service that it looks like a lot of other Yelpers have received. I ordered the Supenn's Thai Style Pasta. It was good. Not the greatest assortment of vegetables, but it was still good. The menu also has an asterisk, indicating it is a spicy dish. I wouldn't consider it spicy at all. I also had the brown rice and tried some of the shrimp pad thai. Everyone else ordered either the chicken or shrimp pad thai as well as some salmon sushi. They all seemed to be quite pleased with their meals. Overall I would give it 3 stars. Definitely not the best Thai I have ever eaten, but it was still pretty good. read more

The Thai food here is usually always great. Last week, I ordered the massumen curry and a dynamite roll, which were great, but the reason for this review and the stars is for the pho. The pho was terrible and not authentic. I am Vietnamese so I grew up eating pho and know authentic pho. Obviously, I know better than to come to a Thai and Sushi restaurant to get pho, but my friend was craving pho and insisted on getting it after the server gave rave reviews. The server was a great server, however, she clearly has never had a real bowl of pho. The broth seemed to be a very mild beef broth without all the flavors that you usually have in pho, for example, star anise and clove. They didn't even offer all the different herbs that normally come with pho, nor did they have any hoisin. They did have Sriracha, but we had to ask for it. Perhaps it was an off day for the pho, but doubtful. I've had bad pho at other places, but at least it still tastes like pho. The "pho" they have had Sawatdee is just a noodle soup that shouldn't be called pho. Other than that, I will definitely return for the Thai food! read more

Worst excuse for sushi I have ever come across. It's insulting to be served such disgusting rotten fish. If you'd like to get food poisoning by all means eat here. It was my first time at Sawatdee. The Maple Grove location is nice, with the exception of bratty rich teens cruising down the "mainstreet". We sat out on the patio. I ordered Sushi, Pad Thai & a diet coke. 1. The sushi was an app for my friend and I. I can't remember the exact name of the sushi, but it was "eel" & it tasted okay. I would say average sushi. 2/5 for sushi. 2.Mild Chicken Pad Thai was really good. It was nice because they put the peanuts on the side. I definitely cleaned my plate! Would have liked the portion to be a little bigger (I love leftovers)! Pad Thai=4/5. 3.The diet coke was huge & the waitress/hostess did refil it onc. She even gave me a sample of Thai tea, which I am glad I sampled because I didn't like it! I would have liked the waitress to check up on us a little more, just because we were outside doesnt mean that we are not part of the restaurant vistors! 4. No answer..... so I got there at 7:38 to be early just in case! My food was done at 7:20, over 30 minutes early and no phone call or update. Barely acknowledged the problem. I always like coming here! Been here numerous times and always mention how great their chicken fried rice is! Their chicken wings are also thick and juicy. Other dishes I rave about are the Pad See Ew and Pad Thai! Aside food, their staff is friendly and service is good. There's an older man that cleans the table, perhaps the owner? Went last night for dinner. I stood at the doorway for a long time and debated grabbing my own table. Finally someone showed up to seat me. I had the thai fried rice, yellow curry style, with crispy tofu. Pretty good, added some more spice from the condiment tray on the table because my level-3 request was pretty mild. The waitress was fine, didn't stop by as often/quickly as I expected considering there were 2 tables in our section (including us). Then 9pm rolled around and the lights went bright. I love the happy hour here. The combination of Sawatdee and Zushiya is perfect! I can start with some of my favorite Thai apps like Sues egg rolls and the deep fried Sarong Sawatdee special (chicken wrapped in very fine rice noodles and deep fried). The Thai style beef jerky is amazing as well! Followed up by some sushi and Pad See Yew (careful on how much spice you get... I like spice but usually get a step lower than I would expect). The only thing to improve would be the service - in my experience it has been very slow! Order: Pad Thai, California roll, cream cheese wontons, Dynamite sushi, and chilled Thai ice tea. The staff was very polite and attentive. The restaurant floor was filthy. Debris, dirt and a sticky coat was spread throughout the store. The kitchen was un-organized and looked like they where in the middle of rush hour, but you can tell no one was here all day. Pad Thai was ok a best, the California roll was dry and lacked flavor. I refuse to eat the dynamite sushi because it was at room temperature and tasted old (I spit it out). On the bright side the Thai ice tea was awesome and the cream cheese wontons were ok. The waiter was very polite and removed the dynamite sushi from my bill. Initially, there was no host and a seemingly busy, yet annoyed bar tender, near the entrance who could care less about the crowd growing in the entry way. Horrible experience. My husband and I walked into the restaurant and put down our name at around 7.25pm. We waited for 15 min and finally got a seat. The hostess bought us drink 5 minutes after we sat down and said there would be a server for us. More than 5 minutes later the hostess came back and said she would take our order. It was almost 8pm. We then placed the order and waited... and waited... and it was about 20 minutes later that we felt something was wrong. There were empty tables and the servers seem pretty slack that time so we thought it shouldn't take that long for our order. My husband then asked the hostess about our food, she simply told him that she would check with the kitchen. We then waited for another 15 min, then came our food. It was 8.35pm, more than an hour after we got into the restaurant. The tom yum soup wasn't hot at all when it got onto our table. Also for the $13 that we paid, there were countless straw mushrooms but barely any chicken. We were very disappointed. The Pad See Yew that we ordered had only chicken and broccoli, did not worth the $9 they charged. No water added for the whole meal. We also had to walk to front desk to ask for bill. We felt like we were being neglected for the whole night. We did not even know who our server was. In conclusion, Sawatdee/Zushiya restaurant is officially being put into our blacklist. I LOVE sushi (maki sushi). I had their #nine, Spicy Salmon, and Dynamite rolls (shared with a friend). The flavor was great, as well as the structure and overall appeal of the sushi. If I could give zero stars I would. Stood here for 15 mins with no acknowledgement or greeting. Other customers waited for take out and none of us could get the hostess attention. She was in the back behind bar on the phone. Then came out acknowledged only one of us and could only do one thing at a time. Won't be back and don't recommend. We have ordered takeout here for years, generally very pleased. Today, it is absolutely different. Thankfully fresh spring rolls were still good and kids loved their satay but both curry dishes green and panang were unrecognizable to past experiences. Taste of green, not great, watery, more spice than flavor. Panang, terrible. The green beans must be days old, the shrimp was flavorless and the curry itself seemed watered down. We tried, couldn't stick with it, dumped in the trash. Hoping this is not where all dishes are headed. I am sure we will try take out again, but will be wary of curry. read more

My rating is based on the hit/miss of the service. The food is always on point. Servers are nice, however can be quite neglectful. I agree with below reviews, this place has the best happy hour menu with fabulous prices. The parking on the street can be tricky however they have additional spots in the back. Worst service ever had. When we arrive, no one was there to greet us, and standing there looking like there were no servers. After 5 minutes of waiting someone came out to seat us. Food wasn't that great, since there are better options for thai food. The worst part of the experience was when it was time to pay for out meal. What restaurant is understaffed on Valentines day ?? We got Napkins and silverware 10 mins after our appetizers were served. The table next to us and one next to them came in after us ... They had a different server. had their main entrees served before us! 20 min wait on a refil... The tofu coconut curry was ok... The whole experience was bad though... However, my coworkers and I order delivery often from the St. Paul location and 5/5 times they have either A. Mixed up the spice levels on the food (AKA ordered it mild and got volcano), B. Forgot an ordered Item, C. Doesnt listen close enough to take down the correct phone # so when they come they call the wrong # and we dont get our food for 2 hours. The main issue, aside from the food not being that great, is that the restaurant is obviously understaffed. This leads to entrees coming out at vastly different times, water glasses not being refilled, and just really rushed service. The service is definitely slow. I would recommend a professional "How To Be A Great Server" course for the team. The food is inconsistent. What you get depends on who is cooking that day. It could taste right on, salty, or bland. I gave 2 stars for lack of consistency and inadequately staffed servers. I used to work here so this is going to be pretty bias but I guess I just wanted to validate all the other customers' reviews that I've read who've had a terrible experience at Sawatdee (as have I when I was an employee there.) I loved working there because I think that the majority of the staff are really kind and the live music is awesome, however great personalities aren't translated through great service. The space is an obvious problem, the tables are all stacked on top of each other which get's incredibly uncomfortable. I understand big busy restaurants and you need lots of tables because otherwise there's ALWAYS going to be a wait but they could take some time to reorganize the seating situations because it is pretty bad. As for the service, I can completely understand how terrible it is! They are always always ALWAYS under staffed. The reason why you have to wait forever to get waited on is because every waitress has like 10 tablese at a time during the dinner rush and the reason why you have to wait to be sat or can't get some help is because they always have so many to go orders which means that they need one or two more servers on duty on a regular basis and also someone who's always dedicated to doing to go orders (they do that on fridays and saturdays but by the obvious lack of service they need to do it more regularly.) And lastly, there are some pretty terrible people that work at Sawatdee. The management is the worst I've ever had the displeasure of having, when I worked there I went home crying or miserable almost every night I worked. My training was literally nothing, and I'd get written up for ridiculous things like not knowing the difference between white rice and sticky rice (I thought they were the same thing but apparently not!). They don't take the time and the discipline to have a 5 star restaurant - I wouldn't recomment it to anyone to be honest and I sincerely hope that the business tanks; a little bit because of my terrible experience as an employee and also because of the general bad service they give consistently. read more
